I've been a patron of this traditional Russian eatery for many years, once a super busy and super tasty staple of south Brooklyn's Russian community; unfortunately now a hit or (more often) miss type of mediocre dive. The pelmeni (sebirskie) were awful, tasted like spoiled meat that was sour (before adding sour cream) and bitter. We asked for the traditional potatoes and herring, it arrived looking tired and the potatoes were mashed when they were supposed to be plain boiled. Their once awesome Russian fruit punch (compot) now is glorified canned cherry juice. I ordered the chicken Kiev which arrived before we were finished with our appetizers; was pretty tasty and they got the crunchy exterior and the melted butter interior aspects right on the money and the flavor was good. For appetizers we had the Greek salad that was overloaded with cheap canned black olives and the disappointing herring with potatoes. The waiter service is usually a hit or a miss as well but this time it was a hit because the waiter was fast, attentive, and courteous; he saw that we barely touched the pelmeni and asked what was wrong with them, he kindly apologized and offered a dessert on the house to help resolve the grim situation. Good thing too, because he bought us a generous portion of a sweet Russian sour cream cake (smetanik) which was really delicious. The food is inexpensive and the food comes relatively fast. All and all this place can return to its former glory if they fix and tweak the loose ends and culinary mishaps but for now I won't be in a rush to return here. read more

I've had an awful experience here. I came here with the assumption that service will be quick and diligent hence the name of the restaurant which implies just that. What I got was an hour long wait until our food was ready and by then I had to leave because I was running late to an appointment I had scheduled. However, our appetizers were delivered to us successfully. Within 10 minutes I had my mushroom barley soup and the garden salad. BUT, the soup was over-salted and the salad was soaked in oil. Gross. We must have harassed the waiter about our food 3 times before he disappeared and had us deal with another waiter. Poor guy. So when we informed him that we were waiting for almost an hour and needed our food to GO, he delivered the packaged containers to us in a heartbeat. However, the side to my entree was MISSING which pissed me off even more. At that point I was so disappointed I just wanted to get out of there. Coming from a Russian culture, I must say that I am impressed. The food tastes incredible due to the home-made taste. I was on my way home with my friend and on the way we came across this place. We both insisted on coming inside. I must admit that it was a wise choice. I was in the mood for my favorite soup, frikadelki. It's soup that comes with meatballs and potatoes. Not only was it fresh, but their portions of the soup do make you full. After digesting for a little, I gave my one of my other favorite dishes a try, mante. It is this white thing that comes with meat inside and sour cream on top. All was beyond perfection taste wise. The employees were nice but definitely can improve their timing on cooking the food. She's a old lady with glasses and I went up to her to say I need a table for 3 and she said ok and left. She seated two people at a 4 people table when there were two people tables available. But the service was mediocre and the waitress only came to us when we called for her, so our table was full of empty dirty plates half the time. My boyfriend and I recently went there twice and while the food is good the service is lacking. Both time my meal came out on average 15-20 mins after his. I had a delicious soup and Kiev chicken the first time. While he had olive salad and vareniki. Ok so i figured the second time let me order something easier. I ordered home fries (easy and it wouldn't take too long) he got a cheburek and chicken cutlets. Let me just say he ate both before I even got my home fries. I had a great cappuccino while I waited....and watched him eat his food .... and watched other tables get theirs..when I asked my waitress what's going on with my fries she told me that they always take a while and that patience is a virtue. I got them after 40 mins of waiting. There is no reason why it should ever take that long. I am not coming back annnyyyyy time soon!!!! I can't believe this is how they serve their clients. Either bring out both plates together or just apologize for the delay and I would have let it go. Mine was an appetizer his an entree. No reason for the insane wait. i LOVED this place!! but you have to come here with specific expectations, and a good grasp of the russian language/culture. i stopped in, by myself, on a recent visit to brooklyn, because i was craving traditional dishes and was honestly curious how they would be at a restaurant as compared to homemade. ordered the borsh, salad olivye, cabbage vareniki and a mug of kvas. the borsh was awesome! great flavor, good seasoning, perfectly comforting with just enough fattiness. it comes with black bread (albeit not ukrainian bread) and sour cream on the side. the salad was a large portion for one person, especially someone looking to try multiple dishes, so at $5 its a great deal. also very tasty, even though i prefer mine with a little more pickles. perfect as a shareable starter if in a group of people, as its meant to be. the vareniki were also an incredible value, at $5 for 25 pieces. i would have liked to be able to try different fillings, but the server told me they don't do mixed plates like that, and you kind of have to accept that this is the style of service, being a cafeteria (literally translated). flavor of vareniki was good, although some fell apart and kind of stuck to each other (slightly overcooked?). another good option for sharing. the kvas hit the spot! the atmosphere is definitely casual, with russian MTV playing silently on the tv when i was there (either that or softcore of some kind...all i know is there were bikini-clad women moving seductively on the screen). this was not a bad thing, just amusing and unexpected. most of the clientele were groups of men having lunch, or what seemed like a ritual gathering of old friends, accompanied by drinking. there is a vibe of a social club in here, with old soviet memorabilia/propaganda/posters on the walls. i would definitely come back again, with friends, and try as much of their other offerings as i can. the hot dishes all look promising. read more

Yes, the food is good but the service is not always great. If the place is packed, you would wait for your order to come for a long time. Best part of almost any Russian restaurant - it's BYOB - they have beer but for anything else, bring your own :-) no cork charge either! They have really good salads - there is a salad we always have with cucumbers, radish in sour cream sprinkled with hard boiled eggs. The smoked eel salad is amazing although they don't always have it. I always have the calamari and skirt steak which is as good as any Cuban will make it! Also try the fried St. Petersburg fish. For this money they charge (like 5-12 dollars a meal) this is a complete steal. Amazing quality food for this money - those guys really make authentic russian food. Whatever I've tasted there - really great. The place itself is tiny and can be pretty crowded on weekends, however, it's the whole point of it - if that would become bigger, something would be really lost. As far as I'm in NY (about 10 years) I still remember this place, it's been there for ages. Places open up and close down, but those guys still stay, and stay strong. That tells something. read more

The food here is delicious, everytime I come to Brooklyn this is my go to spot. I always get the pelmeni, because it is the best that I ever tried. I also get either chicken kebab or pork kebab which is also very good. During my last visit I tried their capitan kebab which was fish, and I really liked it.
