    Varenyky

We stumbled upon Ocean View Cafe while spending the day at Coney Island, and I'm so glad we found it. They serve excellent Ukrainian food that feels authentic and full of flavor. I ordered the chicken shish kebab, and the meat was perfectly cooked, incredibly juicy and packed with flavor. We also tried the varenyky with meat, which were absolutely incredible and some of the best dumplings I've ever had. Every bite was bursting with flavor and easily became the highlight of the meal. The service was pretty good, and I liked that the restaurant felt clean while still maintaining a local neighborhood charm. I'll definitely be returning the next time I'm in the area.

At the end of a long beach day, all you want is a satisfying meal at a chill restaurant and that's exactly what Oceanview Cafe gives you. Me and my friends spend the whole day in the area with no plan for dinner. We considered heading back to Williamsburg for dinner but found this place instead. It said "cash only" on the door though I think they said that only applies for brunch. We were there around 5/6pm and they took credit cards. Worst case scenario, there's an ATM a few blocks away. I got the seafood pasta not knowing exactly what to expect but assuming it would be high quality and fresh seafood. I was VERY happy with my choice and ate almost the entire large plate. My friends both got the scalloped pork chops with mashed potatoes which was also very tasty. We also got Verenikis to share (they're like a russian pierogi) which were awesome but not necessary since the portion sizes for our entrees were almost too much to finish. We sat outside (which I think is essential to the whole experience) and had a leisurely dinner. The staff was friendly and very patient with our poor Russian pronunciation. Every menu item was also presented in Russian and English which was very helpful for us. I would highly recommend this place and I'll definitely be back on my next beach day!

A friend asked me to meet her at Brighton Beach; she wanted company while she gets tan. It was the perfect excuse to try out a Russian restaurant. I am rarely in this area. The chicken soup was a surprise. I finally understood why the waiter asked me to clarify if I wanted chicken soup or chicken noodle soup. The one I ordered was just the soup with dill sprinkled in it. I like that it came with two piroges. Pelmeni (ravioli) reminded me of wontons with doughy exterior. It came with a side of sour cream. Now, I can say I tried Russian cuisine. I would come back again and order their stuffed cabbage.

Thank You! I am your regular visitor because the furnishings of the interior and your menu really appeal to me and I am a big fan of your kitchen. Many thanks to the Chef and all his assistants!

I read the reviews here prior to visiting, and the reviews speak for themselves. It's a small eatery, and they were busy. I tried the stuffed cabbage, and omg, this was incredible; the dill and sour cream added freshness to the dish, and I couldn't stop eating it. It was so addicting. I had the smoked fish with potatoes and Olivier salad, both of which were good as well. The service was good and prompt. The prices were better than other Russian restaurants in the area. I'm definitely coming back to try more food, but the stuffed cabbage was the best I've ever had.

Delicious lunch! I'm not too familiar with Russian or Ukrainian food but this exceeded my expectations. The fried liver was the clear winner (assuming you like liver) - on its own a touch salty but with the buckwheat side it was perfect. The pelmeni (a meat filled dumpling) was very tasty. I didn't try the borscht but my cousin said it was very good with intense beet flavor. All was clearly home made. The service was excellent, he answered all our questions about the menu and there's a video screen at each table showing the dishes. No one else there on a rainy Monday so had the place to ourselves. Not fancy but perfectly fine inside and very near the boardwalk at Brighton Beach. If you go to explore off-the-beaten-path parts of NYC, I recommend stopping here for lunch

Understaffed, under the train, and overwhelmingly good. Light green walls and basic interior, some outside tables. Harried waiters, and you may have to wait for the table (though the food came quickly). Authentic noodle offerings, delicious sauces (including the mushroom), good borsht (red, and try the green!)

Oceanview Café seems like a small restaraunt but it did a great job handling a party of 15 people. The waiters were always available to help and were quick to assist us when we needed something. Since we had a big party, we purchased a banquet of about $55 per person. The food was very well prepared and wasn't too salty. The appetizers were usual Russian appetizers (olevei, herring with potatoes, etc.) The second course was dumplings with meat and potatoes with mushrooms. The third course were kebabs with chicken, lamb and pork. For $55 per person this was a banquet of great value. There are many restaurants that are much more expensive and have worse quality food. Also, I want to note you are allowed to bring your own alcohol here. Overall, I had a great experience here and recommend this cafe!

we came from California to get some cultural experiences, including visiting Brighton Beach. My wife is Russian and I am American. And this was the best place. The food felt like straight out of the kitchen a home cooked meal. The service was excellent. Very friendly. And it just felt very comfortable atmosphere. prices very reasonable too.

TL;DR: An unassuming, authentic Russian restaurant that is borscht & pierogies/vareniki first, easily in my top 3 Eastern European dining arsenal. Highly recommend. While this place is brass tacks--a very casual food spot w less focus on service/ambiance--the chefs pour all that surplus effort into the food. It has the appeal of grandma cooking w/o the occasional pretentiousness of the NYC food scene. We went there for the first time on Saturday for lunch & had: Borchst: A light soup that somehow still holds a bunch of FLAVOR. Tastes very healthy, but has good depth and a nice "vegetable" taste. Handily the best borscht I have EVER had. Meat Ravioli: Smaller than pierogis, but equally flavorful, almost soup dumpling-like with some liquid and meat inside. Stroganoff: This was the middling dish. Not particularly flavorful, but a good option if you want a lot of protein. The meat is well-cooked meat, but dunked in a typical rich cream sauce that doesn't have much seasoning. Overall, this place was AMAZING & I would definitely go back.

This was my first time trying Ukrainian Borscht, so I was not sure what to expect, especially as I have never tried soup with sour cream before, but this was one of the best foods I had in NY and I had tried a huge variety of different NY foods during my vacation here. The soup was very flavorful with a variety of veggies and beets and was not too heavy or salty. The sour cream also compliments the soup's flavor nicely as well. I also had the meat ravioli/pelmeni, which also came with sour cream. These had a heavier meat flavor and the flour was soft and not too thick. Overall tasted pretty good but it's definitely the borscht which is the star of the show. Meal also comes with complementary bread and butter. Service was great as well, the waiters were very respectful.

How could I have not written a review for Oceanview Cafe? I love Oceanview Cafe! It's consistent and they have a lot of my comfort food favorites. The service is not unbelievable, but it is consistent, and the staff is very polite. The food is always fresh, the borscht is my favorite, with sour cream of course! I also recommend the cheese or meat blintzes, they are very tasty as well. The cafe has a great selection of beverages as well, including my favorite Georgian pear flavored soda. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely a solid place to grab a hot and tasty meal if you are in the area.

Once stepping into the store, you are met with large freezers and fridges stuffed to the brim with all things Ukrainian. Many of their dumpling items are in large packages (2-3lbs a pack) and range from $8-$15 per lb depending on the filling. $15 a pound for their lamb and short rib Pierogis. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. The only thing I wouldn't get again is their soup dumplings, as it was a bit difficult to cook and was a little too doughy near the top of the dumpling. Flavor wise, it was delicious and had a nice broth (assuming you didn't pop them. Only 1 didn't pop). But it was a difficult item to cook right in boiling water, like the instructions mention. Perhaps, user error. Every item is sold by weight and labeled after selecting your items. But they're happy to check the weight/explain price before purchasing.

I had a cup of borscht and an order of dumplings, which were both great. The borscht was something I will crave for a while. The broth just had an incredible, balanced flavor. I thought since my food was pretty warm up and serve, that it would be a quick meal, but the service was pretty slow. I sat and waited a while. It was Mother's Day, so I think they were busier than usual with catering orders and moms and grandmas stopping by for desserts for brunch at home. So the pace of service may have been affected/out of ordinary for that reason. For those visiting for the first time: Take a look at the menu upstairs on the sidewalk before going down to the restaurant, because there was only menu downstairs at the counter where you order, so anyone coming for the first time will have to flip through the menu while holding up the line to order unless they know what they want already. When you go downstairs, the restaurant is behind the first door to your left; it's not well-marked. A lot of reviews say it's cash-only, but that may have been under the prior owners/management, because they definitely took credit cards/Apple Pay when I was there last weekend. If you love Ukrainian food, Streecha is well worth a visit. I love its no frills, classic approach to dining. Our favorites of the bunch were the stuffed cabbage and the half dozen potato and cheese verenyky. We only wished everything was hotter because it seemed only the potato verenyky was hot. The restaurant space is tiny--so during weekends and Fridays, you will not get a table without reservation. Menu prices have compounded over the past months. Inflation--understandable. However, the portion size and quality of food has needlessly suffered. As if the owners stopped paying cooks or told them to cut expenses on absolutely everything, including food. Used to really like eating here, but the past four times we visited, our meals were very scant and overpriced. Banquets are a whole different story--a complete rip off. The larger the group, the worse the rip off. We were celebrating a birthday (30 people) and half the guests were left hungry, because the food has been cut so drastically, that for insane prices of $150 per person, people could not even get one serving of each dish. Banquets are a major rip off at every Russian speaking restaurant, so there is no surprise there. However, Rondel has set a new record for poor customer treatment. To add insult to injury, the staff stole our leftover custom-made cake, which we purchased for the occasion. Only one tier of a huge, multiple layer cake was consumed by guests, so we were expecting to take the remaining cake home. Imagine our shock when we were told that there was no more cake left! We were not drunk, to not notice how much cake was consumed! Extremely rude and unprofessional. Our guests already left the table half hungry, because the restaurant decided to save on food and still charge astronomical banquet prices, AND the cake that we brought in was also taken! Unacceptable. Another great example: our party of 8 came for dinner on Saturday night, for a 6pm reservation. At 8pm, we were told that the cooks have left the kitchen and there is no more food! We were celebrating a birthday, so imagine how great that went! Only had the time to order and eat appetizers, and had to go home and cook a birthday meal there. What a shame! What kind of kitchen lets their cooks just up and leave on a busy Saturday night, at 8pm? The funny part: I saw two elderly Russian women in dirty kitchen clothes rush out of the restaurant with their bags a few minutes before we were told that the kitchen was closed for the night. Guess I saw the two cooks responsible for Rondel's kitchen abandon ship in the middle of the busiest business night of the week. Unacceptable. Take your business else where. There are plenty of worthwhile Eastern European restaurants deserving of your money.

After walking out of a very bad experience at imereti Georgian cafe down the street (see separate review) I found this place. Boy, am I glad I did. I was seated in the front. The restaurant was gorgeous. ! I could hear a beautiful voice singing, Eastern European songs in the back of the restaurant and at one point,, he switched to Elvis's "I can't help falling in love with you" in English. That made me a little emotional, because that was my late partner's and my song... Anyway, I decided to go for the crêpes with red caviar (salmon roe), and the Ukrainian borscht. Bread and butter is brought to my table. The white bread was OK, but the brown bread had a deep rich flavor. The crêpes come first, and they were amazing. The crêpes were very warm, soft and delicious. I loved the "red caviar". A little bit salty, more briny than fishy, and a wonderful explosion of flavor when the eggs "pop." in the mouth. I was very happy. Next came the borscht. It had cabbage, beets, potatoes, and either beef or pork. I'm not sure which one. The meat , beets and potatoes was very tender, and the soup was delicious and not too rich. A very satisfying flavor., the beets gave it a little bit of an earthy flavor. The sour cream that came with it, just added a creamy richness to it without overtaking the flavor of the borscht. 1000% a home run. Dinner wasn't cheap. Two dishes, two iced teas (I found out they charge for refills), and tax, and it came out to about $48 before tip, .I didn't care. I don't mind paying extra if the food is that good, and this food was absolutely beyond awesome. I would be glad to come back and try other items on the menu. Thank you!

Apparently there is more than one location in Manhattan. The inside reminded me of a classic diner. Comfy and with a pretty cool vibe. We all slid into a booth and looked over the seasonal offerings along with their standard menu. I was lured by the chicken Kyiv based on the picture of having two rolled up chicken cutlets stuffed with dill and other yumminess, but was a bit disappointment when it arrived with a single small cutlet on my plate with two heaping mounds of potatoes mash and broccoli. I instantly had regret when I should have gotten the borscht soup with pierogies, but wanted to try something I wouldn't usually. I should've stuck to what was safe. My work mom got the stuffed cabbage and that was a clear homerun- really loved the mushroom gravy that it came with. My other colleague got the potato pancake and wasn't too thrilled with it, while my boss got the two Swedish meatballs that he described to be Ikea worthy. Although this was my first time here, I can't say that anyone really loved the food nor would come out of their way to come back. I really was hoping this would have wow-ed me in some way, but I guess I'll stick to what's familiar.

Feels very home-y Loved the Borscht, will always get this every time we come back Tried their Ukrainian combo and it was delicious, stuffed cabbage, pierogis (1 meat, 1 potato, 1 mushroom, 1 spinach), sausage and sauerkraut. The east village combo was good too! The potato is really good. The portion size is decent! We were stuffed and didn't finish everything since it's a little on the heavier side. Pierogi ranking top fav to least favorite: Meat Mushroom Cheese Spinach Potato Also, tried the cheese Blintzes, which reminds me of a bit of a crème haha so it's more of a dessert Next time, we want to try the wiener schnitzel and the stuffed cabbage with cream mushroom sauce?

I got the East Village combo that came with 4 different kinds of pierogis, a cheese blintz and a massive potato pancake for $18. The blintz might be the next I'be ever had. Perfectly sweet and crisp. The potato pierogi was my favorite but it's nice to be able to sample the different flavors with the combo. Our server was so sweet and made us feel right at home. It's hard not to feel good when you're in here. Try the horseradish infused vodka, it's surprisingly smooth.

This place ruined by mothers 70th bday party. I made a reservation with the manager Roman for the birthday party about 3 weeks in advance;and left a deposit to secure the date/time. They told us we would have half of the main dining room. One day before the event Roman calls and asks that another party that booked the other side has had an increase in their party size and would it be ok to move my party further away to the bar area... He said it would be more quieter there. I didn't want to cause trouble so I agreed. The day of the event, Roman is MIA. Our table is set up, and there's a concert going on in the main dining room. These people had a MC, dj, karaoke, games ... BLASTING music in the microphone. When we asked what's happening, the man in charge didn't even flinch or seem to care much. We started complaining and said we booked with you guys and you promised a chill quiet atmosphere... we asked for the other party to lower their music... we almost got into a physical FIGHT with the other party. Why is my mother birthday being dismissed in such a rude way. We could not even make a toast, we couldn't even hear our own thoughts over the loud music. It was ridiculous. The waiter apologized a million times, but why did the owner/manager not handle things??? Even worse; let it escalate? We were basically treated like guests at the "primary event". Shame on you guys as a business . After all that, they didn't even credit my full deposit to the bill.

The experience was a complete disaster from start to finish. The staff was shockingly rude, dismissive, and clearly uninterested in providing even the most basic level of hospitality. On top of that, an outrageously loud party was allowed to take over the space, completely destroying the atmosphere. The noise level was so extreme that our table couldn't hear one another speak -- not conversation, not toasts, nothing. I made multiple attempts to speak with the manager, hoping for some basic professionalism or intervention. Instead, we were flat-out ignored. No apology. No effort. No concern whatsoever. It was as if management simply didn't care that they were ruining a family milestone. This place fails spectacularly in every category that matters: service, management, and overall dining experience. If you're looking for a restaurant that values its guests, respects special occasions, or understands basic customer service, look elsewhere. This restaurant is incompetent, poorly run, and absolutely not worth your time or money. Avoid at all costs.
