I absolutely love this place and have been coming here for years! I've even brought native Russians here and they have all enjoyed the food. There isn't one thing I've tried that I wouldn't recommend; everything truly tastes homemade. I'm honestly drooling, thinking about all the delicious items that are served here. I wanted to explore Eastern European cuisine and Googled to find the best restaurants. This restaurant had great reviews, so I figured I would give it a try. I was pleased to find the reviews were not exaggerated. The duck legs with orange sauce were so tender and delicious, I am not ashamed to admit I sucked the meat off the bone. The mash potatoes were super delish. My companion had the Cornish hens with mash potatoes and also found her food to be very delicious. The restaurant gives very generous portions of food. Food pricing is very reasonable too. Even though my companion and I are not a part of the Georgian culture, eating this food gave us a sense of eating a home-cooked meal. AN ANSWER TO THE PREVIOUS REVIEW ABOUT THE FOOD ON THE FLOOR. I have been coming to this restaurant for the past 5 years, and just had the need to say that the review that was left before about the food being left on the floor is very misleading and has nothing to do with reality. At the very least, the customer did not understand what was going on. I worked at restaurants myself before, and I happened to see the employees doing this before at this restaurant, and observed what was going on. They clean out their fridges and throw out everything that is not good for consumption anymore. They restock the fridges with fresh food and take care of the rest. This is a regular, ordinary practice that helps to make sure that everything is being kept fresh, and clean. The food on the floor went to trash. It is not being put back into the fridges, nor served to customers. Please don't be mislead by someone that doesn't know what is going on, and didn't obviously care to ask. The food here is amazing, so as the hardworking staff. And a reminder, they have an "A", so nothing to worry about. read more

Being my first foray into Slavic cuisine, I was impressed by its versatility and depth in the menu. We had ordered the liver vareniki (dumpling/gyoza), Ukrainian borscht, beef shishkaboob and for drinks compot and tarragon. Hating all things liver, the vareniki was pleasantly good and made reconsider my feelings regarding liver. The Ukrainian borscht was hearty and would be prefect for cold days. The chicken shish kebab was by far the highlight, cooked to perfection! Compot, a red fruit punch, was delicious and preferred it over the green tarragon which had an unusual aftertaste. The staff was great and the outside seat was very comfortable with its deep and large seats. If you can handle the bustle of the street and the screeching on the occasional passing of the subway, I would highly recommend this place if you are visiting Coney Island! read more

as we browsed through the Russian restaurant options in Brighton Beach, we made our decision on this small restaurant on Brighton Beach Avenue. They didn't look flashy, and had no obnoxious "only for tourists" vibe (expensive bad food) to it. We didn't want to go to a tourists spot, but where actual locals (Russians, Ukrainians, etc.) would go and eat. This place looked just right. The price might seem a bit high, if you don't know how much food you are getting. It was rather large portion on a large plate, you can see the size in the photo here. Pretty big, right? But it was so tasty that we finished the dish without effort. It also had pickled veggies as well, which was nice pallet cleanser. I heard they serve really great desserts also, but we were very full after our meal. So, we decided to get coffee and tea without dessert. The cappuccino came in a nice glass mug and sugar stirring stick! The tea came in the traditional tea glass holders, which was amazing!!! I loved the traditional look, and it came with tea bag (I asked for Earl Grey), lemon slices, and preserves. Perfect way to end the meal. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience. I also had the combuca to drink which was very good. The most interesting part of the meal was the guy from Georgia- the country- who asked to join me! Misnomer aside, this place turned out to be the perfect way to cap off a recent afternoon at Coney Island: Anyway, wasn't at all sure what to expect and was bracing myself for the possibility of an empty, glum dining space. Happily, I could not have been more wrong. In fact, there was a steady flow of diners the entire time we were there, on a Sunday evening. Plus, the ambiance exuded an intangible Old World charm that I found enchanting. Service was also pleasant and friendly. As for the food, I found it almost as bewitching as the atmosphere: Greek Salad: I've noticed that Eastern European restaurants often use ripe olives in place of traditional kalamatas, and this spot was no different. It's a travesty if you ask me. It also came with a small, metal tureen full of chopped dried beef, which I didn't expect and wasn't into at all. But this being said, there was still plenty to like about this Salad. It featured gorgeously ripe, red tomatoes and a really interesting salty white cheese that tasted like a cross between Feta and Ricotta Salata. Cold Borscht: Growing up, my Mom used to make a version of this that involved throwing cooked beets into the blender with some stock, chilling, and then swirling lots of sour cream into the mixture. This was was not that. Instead, it featured shredded cooked beets in a cold broth. Refreshing, but no match for Mom's. Vareniki aka Stuffed Dumplings: Out of the three different fillings that we tried, Meat was the winner, if only 'cause I'd like to order these again when I return. Cherry came in second 'cause duh... Cherry. These were filled with Sour Cherries and topped with a Cherry Sauce. Got 'em for dessert and while interesting, would probably go with something else next time. Compared to these two, Potato, while good, tasted very standard. Plus I was pining for the more enticing sounding Salty Cheese Vareniki that hubby talked me out of choosing. Lamb Kabab: I didn't see an option on the menu to order Kabobs a la carte, so we went with an entree, mostly for the kid. He insisted on getting Fries as his side, but had it been up to Mama, we'd've gotten Kasha. Luckily, as it turns out, those Fries hit just the right crispy, salty notes. The Lamb was tender and just as fellow Yelper, Stefany V. describes, "more beefy than gamey." With one of the bites I tried, though, I encountered some gristle. Kompot: Essentially sweet 'n tangy Cherry Juice with Sour Cherries at the bottom. Lovely. Vodka: If you want to do a shot, there are various labels to choose from, including Smirnoff, Absolut and a rather sketchy sounding 'Russian,' which intriguingly is the priciest at $5. I opted for the latter and gotta say, it went down smoothly, with no harsh aftertaste. Ultimately, I think what I loved most about this spot is that it made me feel transported. Do not be put off by the coffee shop level decor, the food is worthy of finer environs. Next to the side tables, digital picture frames display shots of the food, and the plates actually looks that good on arrival. We began with an excellent special - a bean salad with tomatoes, peppers, parsley and dill. There were some crushed nuts in there - not the walnuts I associate with Georgian food. The white beans, similar to Gigandes but a bit smaller, were perfectly cooked, the dressing nice and light. The pelmeni were tasty too, in a little butter with sour cream on the side. I suppose I would have liked a bit more seasoning, and they could have been drained better. For main courses, we both had lamb. My partner had the lamb shish kebab with grilled vegetables. The lamb was tasty and tender, but still was outshone by the masterfully executed vegetables. Leg of lamb tuned out to be a large braised shank. Very meaty and tender, presented in a creole style sauce of braised celery, peppers and tomatoes. It could have used a bit of heat or spice. On the plate, some nicely cooked cabbage and a mound of delicious kasha. Service was quite good. The only dissonant note was my Heineken, which was barely chilled. Usually on the weekend, I am escorting my non-Asian friends through Chinatown. Even though I can't read a lick of Chinese, I have that x-factor in my DNA that simply enables me to find my way around that part of the city. Today, the tables have turned. My Russian roomie had his parents visit, so of course we head to Brighton beach. Right off the Q, his eyes light up. "This is my Chinatown!" he cries. He points out that everyone has small, cheap apartments, yet manages to drive either a Beamer or a Benz. He then smells his way to the beach. And when we were hungry, he led us to freedom. Scratch that. His out of town parents lead us. After some walking we see the ocean view cafe. The Ruskies admit that it's a simple looking place, but assure us it's a good one. Knowing that the best places are usually the hole-in-the-wall type, I confidently follow them inside. As we enter, the soviets take charge. They tell was what we should order, without even opening the menu. Before I even get to decide, the waiter brings us some traditional drinks - some sort of punch with grapes. Super sweet, and super delish. We take a peak into the kitchen and an old lady with a blue apron is holding it down, working the grill and carrying buckets of pelmenies. So B.A. We got some beef stroganoff action, some Cornish hen, some pelmenies and other pirogi-type dishes (uploaded some pics). Btw, my friend couldn't open up the packet of butter for his bread, so he stabbed it with his knife. His dad promptly commented: "This Russian way to open." +1 delish +1 authenticity +2 for grandma working the kitchen 0 because I'd like a bit more meat on my plate. Glad I went here. A good part of my excitement that we chose Brighton Beach to go hit up the beach on a 90+ degree day was the prospect of Ukrainian borscht (yes...even on a hot day), so even before hitting the sand, I was busy searching on Yelp for somewhere good. Oceanview Cafe looks pretty unassuming in a calm white and blue toned color palatte (I couldn't help but cringe a little at the use of Comic Sans on the menu, but hey! at least the whole menu wasn't in Comic Sans). The food is so so tasty! What we got: green borscht (kind of like egg drop soup), cold borscht, and Ukrainian borscht, meat/potato&mushroom vareniki (aka pierogis), & beef stroganoff. Not entirely sure what Yelper S. is referring to, but I only saw 2 TVs that were pretty small and not very intrusive. We did have some trouble trying to get our check earlier since we were in a bit of a rush but they didn't seem to comprehend why we would want to do that :) read more
