I tried Chicken Kyiv for the first time in my life. Oh my goodness, it was absolutely delicious. The moment I cut it in half, the butter inside started running onto the plate, just like it's supposed to. The mashed potatoes and salted cucumber on the side were also incredibly flavorful and tasty. And the cranberry vodka was the perfect finishing touch! It really elevated the whole experience. I really wanted to try their medovik (honey cake), but I was already too full and didn't have the courage to ask for it to go. But I'll definitely, definitely come back to try more of their food, drinks, and maybe finally that dessert. The atmosphere is amazing: decorated in old-style Russian fashion, full of character and nostalgia. If you're celebrating a birthday, they even play Russian music from the cartoon, which adds such an authentic and cozy touch. Honestly, this might be the best place I've been to so far... maybe because my Russian soul felt right at home.

I have been to Mari Vanna in Moscow many times, to Washington location while it was still open. NYC location did not disappoint! I stopped by for an early dinner: had olivie salad, pirozhki with cabbage and chicken Kiev. All was great. Loved pirozhki the most. Took several to go too.

Recommended to me by my Russian friend, Mari Vanna had great takeout and lots of great, authentic options. I'll go through my order and each item: Po schuch emu veleniu: Pike caviar, served with Smoked Sour Cream, Tangy Pickled Onions and Roasted Bread Slices. Great serving size! I wish the bread would have been a bit more toasted or had butter served with it, but one of my favorites we ordered. Fishy flavor paired nicely with the sour cream. Veal Pelmeni: Traditional handmade dumplings in light herb better. We got them boiled and they were warm and tasty. A lot came in a serving. Soleniya: Assortment of pickled vegetables. Pickled apples I think were included which were unique. I loved the pickled tomatoes but wished it came with more. The pickles themselves in this were super delicious, and normally I'm not a big pickle girl. Meat Pirozhok & Potato Pirozhok: Small pies stuffed with meat and potato respectively. Super delicious with great, even dough crust on the outside. Potato Vareniki: Traditional handmade potato dumpling with caramelized onions. A lot in one serving, tasty but more on the plain side. All in all a great takeout meal for sharing and a wonderful introduction to Russian cuisine for those who are interested in trying!

Fun Russian resturant. Was only here for the shots of vodka at the bar which was quite unique and good

One of our favorite New York spots! Authentic Russian food with a unique atmosphere. We even brought the kids this last time and they loved it. Cake is out of this world!

What a wonderful experience and immersion into traditional Russian culture and food. The dining area felt like a living room, lively but comforting. This was my first experience with Russian cuisine and it left me wanting more. I have already planned on visiting again during my next trip into Manhattan. The service was great, and our waitress explained the dishes that we had questions about. Every so often there would be a birthday celebration with a traditional song. So fun, a must try if you are in the area and are looking for something unique and authentic!

Very surprised on Kamchatka, which is a creamy pasta, it taste super good on creamy sauce. Another MUST ORDER is the Chicken Kiev, Pelmeni and Ajarski Pie Chicken Kiev has stuffed butter, whenever you cut the fried chicken meat, the butter come out and melted into mashed potato. Pelmeni is a lamb dumpling, I like it contained in a little jar. Ajarski Pie also taste good with the dough and melt cheese. The highlight here is the decoration and vibe. Awesome Russian decoration for friends hang out. I'll super recommend you to come if you hangout with friends and looking for fancy places.

Fabulous Russian restaurant. Beautiful inside and waitstaff was excellent ! Food was delicious. Could have just had the two appetizers and not ordered entries, as portions were good. Had the fig infused vodka shots and it was delicious. They have many flavors available. The herring under a fur coat was amazing and with trying, even if you don't like herring, like me! Some of the pricing is a little off putting. Didn't know that bread was extra. And one person orders a scotch with ginger ale and they charged $2.00 extra for the ginger ale. Not terrible, but that has never happened to us before. Having spent a lot of money, they could absorb the cost of the 2 squirts of ginger ale from the fountain! Despite those small things, it was a lovely evening with great and different food and nice environment.

WOW the space is so cool. The longer you look, the more wonderful details you see. Very cosy and fun. Came with a group of friends from work and sampled a lot of the menu. Food was very tasty and we were stuffed!

Love the decor. It's like visiting a Russian grandmothers place. All the details every table every corner even the bathroom is very well decorated. I love the sing birthday song in Russian. I think the food is amazing. The choice of vodka infusion are a must try. I definitely want to come back n try different things.

The cheese pie is probably my favorite thing here but a little too heavy and greasy for me. The crab/lobster pasta was a little too al dente and something about the flavor was a little off to me. Seemed very busy maybe a lot of date nights but it took awhile for the waiters to get to us but the dessert at the end was really good- not pictured but we got the Neapolitan Dark good for date nights not really good for groups over 4-5

We came here to celebrate friends visiting and one of them is Armenian. She had been here before and said it lived up to the hype. The atmosphere is very cozy and decor inside is stunning and beautifully decorated. The food boasts a lot of Eastern European cuisine with a lot of diverse dishes. As a table we shared the sunflower salad, the cheese pie, soleniya, and as an entree we had the salmon filet, and the chicken kotletki. I was happy to have someone who could order for us and authentically. While certainly on the pricey side we enjoyed all the food and it was delicious. This is most certainly a place you come to celebrate something.

I came here with a friend who said it's one of the best Russian restaurants in the city and it really disappoint. I loved everything that we ate. The restaurant is adorable, quaint and service was great. Highly recommend and make sure you make a reservations.

I read that the tables are timed (2 hour limit) from an older review. Is it still true?

    What is the dress code?

They do not have a dress code but if you are going in on a Fri or Sat night I would not wear beach attire. You will just feel more at home. Use reasonable judgement you will be fine.

Do they enforce the vaccine mandate? I want to bring a (vaccinated) friend who's pregnant so I'd feel more comfortable knowing they enforce.

    Stay home

Is there any vegan options available here?

Not many to be honest as Russian food is cream-heavy. But some dishes are vinegret salad, okroshka soup with kvas, assorted Russian pickled veggies.

    Is it byob?

No they do serve their own list

Has Mari Vanna closed down? I passed by yesterday and the shop was empty

They're reopening 8/16. Closed rn for renovations

Do they have traditional Russian tea from a samovar? If not, where do I find this?

    Yes

I recently ordered from Russian Samovar through Uber Eats Pozharsky cutlet with mashed potatoes,…read moretwo borschts, black bread, and Olivier salad. The main issue I experienced was with the delivery process rather than the food itself. I was carefully tracking my order through the Uber Eats app and stepped away briefly, assuming no driver had yet picked up the order. When I returned, the delivery window was already ending. After calling the restaurant, I learned somewhat confusingly that they do not directly work with Uber Eats drivers and instead use a separate delivery service. Unfortunately, this was not clearly communicated through the Uber Eats platform. I later discovered missed calls and notifications from a third-party delivery service while I was away, which I hadn't seen because all my attention was on the Uber Eats tracking system. As a result, I received the order noticeably later and expected the food to arrive cold. To my surprise the borscht was still hot and absolutely excellent. Rich flavor, very comforting, and clearly made with care. While meat is not included by default (it can be added for an extra $5), the soup itself was outstanding. The black bread was nicely toasted, the mashed potatoes tasted homemade exactly what you hope for with a classic cutlet dish. The Pozharsky cutlet had a great crispy exterior while remaining juicy and well-seasoned inside. The Olivier salad was also excellent. A couple of details were missing: the mushroom gravy mentioned in the description was not included, and utensils requested in the order were forgotten. Kitchen / Food: Delivery experience: (minus one star for missing utensils) Ordering system clarity: Customer communication: Overall, I'm giving this place 4 stars because the food quality truly stands out. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing, and the flavors were authentic and satisfying. There is room for improvement in communication and delivery coordination, but I would absolutely order again. Thank you to the chefs for such delicious food.

For a solo diner, they seated me right next to the piano, where the pianist and guitarist were playing lively music. Food was brought out quickly. The Borscht was hot and tasty! Perfect for a snowy night in New York. I loved this. Between the Pelmeni or Vareniki, I chose pelmeni because it has meat. I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity of the dumplings. Russian Black Bread was simple, nothing remarkable. For dessert, I chose the Medovik, the Ukrainian layered honey cake. This was soft and sweet, and a far better medovik than my first time trying it at another Russian restaurant nearby. Maybe I because came during a dinner rush (I came in around 6pm), but it was hard to get service's attention when I needed water or when I was done eating. When I did catch one of the waiters' attention, he acted like he was kind of annoyed. And while my waitress was nice, there were several times I tried to get her attention, and she kept walking past me. It was really awkward, especially when I wanted to pay and was ready to hurry out of there.

The waiter claimed that the reason our orders were coming out slow, even the caviar for one of our drinks, was that the only service station that wasn't overrun was the dessert station. The second floor has a tree with lit colored glass eggs and a spinning bear aquarium reminiscent of a Russian dancing bear. I only ordered the honey cake because we had already eaten and were visiting friends. It was moist and delicious, but certainly not enough to make me return. Others in my group spent $33 for a handful of Pelmeni dumpling in a sauce. Although they were deemed delicious, seems overly expensive for beef, for sour cream, mushrooms, and peas. The espresso martini was also deemed one of the best they've had. The French onion soup was vinegary and not good - I can after to the vinegary nature because I could smell it several seats away.

After walking out of a very bad experience at imereti Georgian cafe down the street (see separate review) I found this place. Boy, am I glad I did. I was seated in the front. The restaurant was gorgeous. ! I could hear a beautiful voice singing, Eastern European songs in the back of the restaurant and at one point,, he switched to Elvis's "I can't help falling in love with you" in English. That made me a little emotional, because that was my late partner's and my song... Anyway, I decided to go for the crêpes with red caviar (salmon roe), and the Ukrainian borscht. Bread and butter is brought to my table. The white bread was OK, but the brown bread had a deep rich flavor. The crêpes come first, and they were amazing. The crêpes were very warm, soft and delicious. I loved the "red caviar". A little bit salty, more briny than fishy, and a wonderful explosion of flavor when the eggs "pop." in the mouth. I was very happy. Next came the borscht. It had cabbage, beets, potatoes, and either beef or pork. I'm not sure which one. The meat , beets and potatoes was very tender, and the soup was delicious and not too rich. A very satisfying flavor., the beets gave it a little bit of an earthy flavor. The sour cream that came with it, just added a creamy richness to it without overtaking the flavor of the borscht. 1000% a home run. Dinner wasn't cheap. Two dishes, two iced teas (I found out they charge for refills), and tax, and it came out to about $48 before tip, .I didn't care. I don't mind paying extra if the food is that good, and this food was absolutely beyond awesome. I would be glad to come back and try other items on the menu. Thank you!

The service was quick, food came out quick and dishes were cleared quick too! We tried a variety of kebabs and a mushroom cheburechki. The mushroom cheburechki was my favorite thing this evening but everything else was pretty good too! Portions were big and prices were reasonable. My takes on each dish: 1) cheburechnaya salad - light but flavorful, good to pick on with your meal. I like the avocado on top. Small portion is good enough for 2. 2) thin cut fries - like shoestring, really unique. Half portion is good enough for 2. 3) mushroom cheburechki - crispy but juicy, delicious with sauce. Definitely try this! 4) veal liver kebab: good when hot but I think one or two bite is enough because liver taste is strong.. if you like liver definitely get it, otherwise can skip. 5) lamb kebab: good, juicy. Definitely eat while hot, can be tough while cooler. A nice basic taste, nothing too weird. 6) sweetbread kebab: not my favorite it tastes a bit too fatty without justifying the fat. 7) lulya kebab: one of my favorites. It's a ground meat kebab and it's very juicy. Definitely get it! 8) beef skirt kebab: maybe my favorite one. It tastes like a juicy steak bite. 9) no fat lamb ribs: second favorite. The seasoning is good. A bit gamier than the basic lamb kebab. Overall we enjoyed the meal and will be back to try some other items! The only gripe is that the meat is a bit rare and I would not like to eat organ meat with some blood in it. My stomach was not used to it even the next day. Not sick but not feeling my normal self. I suggest them cook the organ meats more well-done next time for food safety.
