    Borscht

The B train is one of life's greatest pleasures If you're like me, you get on somewhere on the Upper West Side and ride that thang in its entirety until you end up at the southernmost point of Brooklyn. An hour and twenty minutes of pure urban, transit-philic bliss. I usually go to Brighton Beach to get all my Eastern European groceries. The day I discovered Skovorodka however, we were in the middle of the deepest freeze in recent memory, and I NEEDED some borscht and vodka to survive between my sporadic stops at Cyrillic plastered storefronts. Skovorodka could not have scratched this itch in me more perfectly. I ordered the Ukrainian borscht and Siberian Pelmeni - and of course received complementary Borodinsky bread. Between these two hot appetizers, a generous basket of bread, and a few chilled vodka shots, I felt invincible. I'm convinced that I would have frozen to death, right there waiting for the Manhattan bound B to leave the station had it not been for the perfectly executed Russian food and $7 beluga shots.

If you like Russian food, this is definitely a good place to start when in Brighton Beach. This is my second time here. There were 5 of us and had a wonderful meal. We mostly ate appetizers since we wanted to try other places as well. We enjoyed the pelmeni, vareniki, potatoes with mushrooms, blintzes with red caviar, lamb kebabs, smoked mackerel with potatoes, and the pickled fruits and veggies. It was unique and I unexpectedly liked it. With that said, I'm already thinking of going back in 2 weeks. Russian food for me is a great comfort food, especially the dumplings that feel like a warm hug on a cold and rainy day. Why not 5 stars?? I think the dishes were way overpriced with the food ratio.

First off, I would be lying if I didn't say that I wasn't compelled to go to the restaurant because of the giant bear statue that they have out front. I mean where in New York City are you going to find anything like that. That being said, it was overall a good dining experience at an authentic Russian restaurant in Brighton Beach when I had dinner there. The service was very friendly and attentive. I initially was going to order the iced tea, but the gentlemen recommended I get the compote and it was tasty. We ordered the lamb pelmeni, beef kebabs, salmon kebabs, and caviar with crepes. All were very good, especially, the kebabs. I will say that compared to other places in the neighborhood, the bread was a bit underwhelming but other than that it was an enjoyable dinner. Like other reviewers have said, the music can be a bit loud, which is why we opted to sit closer towards the entrance. If you're looking for authentic Central Asian or Eastern European cuisine, I would definitely recommend going to Brighton Beach and I would definitely recommend checking out of Skovorodka.

Really good and reasonably priced Russian restaurant in Brighton beach. The pelmeni were definitely fresh as they were 10x better than the frozen pelmeni I bought and cooked at home from Tashkent next door. We didn't try any soups, but we got lamb shashlik (Russian / Georgian version of kebab) and it was perfectly cooked and the sauce was a nice addition. They had several types of decaf hot tea which was appreciated. Will definitely be back when my babushka comes to visit me in NY :)

Famous Russian friendliness and hospitality, experienced first hand.

Great place to experience famous Russian friendliness, hospitality, and quality of customer service. We didn't get to taste any food but we did learn a few Russian choice words and phrases. So we give them 2 stars.

Great spot to go to if you are in the area. Stopped by for blintzes, pierogi, and crepe with caviar and they did not disappoint. The crepe dough + cheese filling was definitely sweet so keep this in mind when ordering. Traditional restaurant that I am eager to visit again and try more menu offerings next time I am in the area!

The restaurant is nicely decorated. Food was okay, a bit bland (needed some salt and black pepper). I think plating does the food injustice because the plates are huge so the food portion looks little and skimped. If they had smaller plates and had a nicer plating it would help the presentation. People eat with their eyes first, so seeing what I got kind of turned me a little away.

Chicken stroganoff. Would recommend over the steak. Better deal.

Short review: Highly recommend the dumplings and the chicken stroganoff of all things. I decided to upload a modern menu as well it hasn't been updated on yelp for years. Otherwise, this review is from back back in April (sorry for taking so long.) We had a mix of food from this Russian/ Ukrainian spot. Our waiter was nice. For drinks they had Baltika (which I had) along with Georgian wine and some other wines along with liqueurs. As we ordered a lot, I'll be listing them below by section. Appetizers/salads: Herring with potatoes: Nice garlicky potatoes. Vareniki with potatoes & sautéed onions: Very good version. Nice dumpling texture. Siberian Pelmeni- Traditional boiled dumplings with meat: I preferred this over the other dumplings even though both were excellent. Meaty and delicious: Avocado salad: Nice fresh avocado. Had some tomato as well. Salad "Kavkaz- Pickles, veggies, feta cheese, and cured beef (basturma.) Very uhh Russian/Eastern European salad. Tasty though a ton of pickles. Mains (most came with a side which I am listing after with brackets.) Beef stroganoff (mashed potatoes:) There wasn't that much beef but it was tender. Very rich but I preferred the chicken version. The chicken version was a lot cheaper (I believe $9) and the sauce made the dish more than the actual meat. Pan-fried calf liver w/caramelized onions (home fries:) Very tasty not overly cooked liver with not so much breading. Home fries were fine. Wiener schnitzel (pan-fried veggies:) Also quite good. Nice light fry again. The veggies consisted of roasted pepper and cauliflower which was unexpected and quite good also. Grilled salmon w/spinach sauce (pan-fried veggies:) We got this as a lighter dish but I'm not that big of a fan of salmon usually. The spinach sauce was light. Alright. Desserts: Crepes with fresh apple filling: They weren't that big but the filling was tasty. There was also a bit of chocolate sauce. Apple strudel with ice cream: Massive strudel. The apples could have used a bit more flavor but it was fine especially for the price. Vareniki w/cherries: Disappointing. Needed more sour cherry and these unlike the other dumplings were gummy. Outside of the desserts being just alright (gives a reasoning to go to Tashkent instead which isn't a bad thing,) the rest of the food was quite tasty. Nice staff as well. No real complaints. It's just generic tasty Russian food.

We enjoyed our lunch at this place! The pan fried potatoes and the Kharcho soup were delicious, the chicken borscht was okay, nothing special. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly. We were helped with our choice and served well. Ambiance was calm and cozy. Nice place to have lunch/dinner imo.

I'm on the fence about this place. The service was ok. The music was ok, good enough for older crowd . Good was not bad but portions were small and prices were way too high for those portions.

I really wanted to try Russian and Ukrainian cuisine while visiting Brighton Beach during a recent stay in New York City, and Skovorodka definitely fit the bill. It is a short walk from the Brighton Beach Avenue Q train stop. Just look for the brown bear statue positioned in front of the cafe. Skovorodka is one of the few places in the NYC metropolitan area where one can try Russian beer like Baltika or Russian vodka. Got a chance to try the borscht, which was delicious. My first experience with Russian cuisine many years ago was with pelmeni served at a dinner party. I had my heart set on trying pelmeni again, but after seeing photos of the delicious red caviar and crepes, I ordered that with a plate of mashed potatoes. Loved the decor at Skovorodka, and enjoyed sipping from a glass of Baltika. P.S. the borscht at Skovorodka, heavy emphasis on beets and cabbage, is more on the savory side and is quite good.

Incredible food and ambience like walking into a local place in Moscow. Everything we had was fresh & homemade.

Once stepping into the store, you are met with large freezers and fridges stuffed to the brim with all things Ukrainian. Many of their dumpling items are in large packages (2-3lbs a pack) and range from $8-$15 per lb depending on the filling. $15 a pound for their lamb and short rib Pierogis. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. The only thing I wouldn't get again is their soup dumplings, as it was a bit difficult to cook and was a little too doughy near the top of the dumpling. Flavor wise, it was delicious and had a nice broth (assuming you didn't pop them. Only 1 didn't pop). But it was a difficult item to cook right in boiling water, like the instructions mention. Perhaps, user error. Every item is sold by weight and labeled after selecting your items. But they're happy to check the weight/explain price before purchasing.

I had a cup of borscht and an order of dumplings, which were both great. The borscht was something I will crave for a while. The broth just had an incredible, balanced flavor. I thought since my food was pretty warm up and serve, that it would be a quick meal, but the service was pretty slow. I sat and waited a while. It was Mother's Day, so I think they were busier than usual with catering orders and moms and grandmas stopping by for desserts for brunch at home. So the pace of service may have been affected/out of ordinary for that reason. For those visiting for the first time: Take a look at the menu upstairs on the sidewalk before going down to the restaurant, because there was only menu downstairs at the counter where you order, so anyone coming for the first time will have to flip through the menu while holding up the line to order unless they know what they want already. When you go downstairs, the restaurant is behind the first door to your left; it's not well-marked. A lot of reviews say it's cash-only, but that may have been under the prior owners/management, because they definitely took credit cards/Apple Pay when I was there last weekend. If you love Ukrainian food, Streecha is well worth a visit. I love its no frills, classic approach to dining. The fear in his voice when he asked if we were in the right place was already a great sign. Tucked in a room to the left were several long tables and a lady in the front taking orders. We wanted to try a little bit of everything so we settled for half a dozen of meat verenyky, a half dozen of potato and cheese verenyky, borscht, and stuffed cabbage. Our favorites of the bunch were the stuffed cabbage and the half dozen potato and cheese verenyky. We only wished everything was hotter because it seemed only the potato verenyky was hot. But as a self-service kitchen that relies on the help of volunteers, it wasn't surprising. So if you're looking for Ukrainian food without spending a fortune at Veselka, Streecha is a great alternative. I also think they do affordable lunch specials so that's something else I need to try.

The restaurant space is tiny--so during weekends and Fridays, you will not get a table without reservation. Menu prices have compounded over the past months. Inflation--understandable. However, the portion size and quality of food has needlessly suffered. As if the owners stopped paying cooks or told them to cut expenses on absolutely everything, including food. Used to really like eating here, but the past four times we visited, our meals were very scant and overpriced. Banquets are a whole different story--a complete rip off. The larger the group, the worse the rip off. We were celebrating a birthday (30 people) and half the guests were left hungry, because the food has been cut so drastically, that for insane prices of $150 per person, people could not even get one serving of each dish. Banquets are a major rip off at every Russian speaking restaurant, so there is no surprise there. However, Rondel has set a new record for poor customer treatment. To add insult to injury, the staff stole our leftover custom-made cake, which we purchased for the occasion. Only one tier of a huge, multiple layer cake was consumed by guests, so we were expecting to take the remaining cake home. Imagine our shock when we were told that there was no more cake left! We were not drunk, to not notice how much cake was consumed! Extremely rude and unprofessional. Our guests already left the table half hungry, because the restaurant decided to save on food and still charge astronomical banquet prices, AND the cake that we brought in was also taken! Unacceptable. Another great example: our party of 8 came for dinner on Saturday night, for a 6pm reservation. At 8pm, we were told that the cooks have left the kitchen and there is no more food! We were celebrating a birthday, so imagine how great that went! Only had the time to order and eat appetizers, and had to go home and cook a birthday meal there. What a shame! What kind of kitchen lets their cooks just up and leave on a busy Saturday night, at 8pm? The funny part: I saw two elderly Russian women in dirty kitchen clothes rush out of the restaurant with their bags a few minutes before we were told that the kitchen was closed for the night. Guess I saw the two cooks responsible for Rondel's kitchen abandon ship in the middle of the busiest business night of the week. Unacceptable. Take your business else where. There are plenty of worthwhile Eastern European restaurants deserving of your money.

This place ruined by mothers 70th bday party. I made a reservation with the manager Roman for the birthday party about 3 weeks in advance;and left a deposit to secure the date/time. They told us we would have half of the main dining room. One day before the event Roman calls and asks that another party that booked the other side has had an increase in their party size and would it be ok to move my party further away to the bar area... He said it would be more quieter there. I didn't want to cause trouble so I agreed. The day of the event, Roman is MIA. Our table is set up, and there's a concert going on in the main dining room. These people had a MC, dj, karaoke, games ... BLASTING music in the microphone. When we asked what's happening, the man in charge didn't even flinch or seem to care much. We started complaining and said we booked with you guys and you promised a chill quiet atmosphere... we asked for the other party to lower their music... we almost got into a physical FIGHT with the other party. Why is my mother birthday being dismissed in such a rude way. We could not even make a toast, we couldn't even hear our own thoughts over the loud music. It was ridiculous. The waiter apologized a million times, but why did the owner/manager not handle things??? Even worse; let it escalate? We were basically treated like guests at the "primary event". Shame on you guys as a business . After all that, they didn't even credit my full deposit to the bill.

This restaurant single-handedly ruined what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime celebration for…read moremy mother's 70th birthday. The experience was a complete disaster from start to finish. The staff was shockingly rude, dismissive, and clearly uninterested in providing even the most basic level of hospitality. On top of that, an outrageously loud party was allowed to take over the space, completely destroying the atmosphere. The noise level was so extreme that our table couldn't hear one another speak -- not conversation, not toasts, nothing. I made multiple attempts to speak with the manager, hoping for some basic professionalism or intervention. Instead, we were flat-out ignored. No apology. No effort. No concern whatsoever. It was as if management simply didn't care that they were ruining a family milestone. This place fails spectacularly in every category that matters: service, management, and overall dining experience. If you're looking for a restaurant that values its guests, respects special occasions, or understands basic customer service, look elsewhere. This restaurant is incompetent, poorly run, and absolutely not worth your time or money. Avoid at all costs.
