We wanted to have dinner at this new American restaurant in Nolita called --- "O" but according to Resy they were fully booked up. We were put on the notify list but weren't notified. I emailed them but there was no reply. I called them for three days at assorted times but no one ever picked up the phone. So we opted for Wallse. Making a reservation via resy was easy. We arrived and the hostess sat us at our table immediately. No needless trip to the bar. The room was empty at 6pm but by 6:30 it was full. The service was excellent. The food was perfect. The wine very good. The chef/owner Kurt came out to say hello. No patron was on their cellphone. No female guest was wearing a see thru nude dress. No male guest was wearing a wife beater tank top with arms and arms of decorative tattoos. No one took photos of themselves in front of the Julian Schnabel painting in the main dining room. On our way out I poked my head into the kitchen and thanked the chef. It was a very pleasurable evening. read more

Wanted to try a Michelin-starred place while friends were in town visiting, and Wallsé had one star when we came, which felt like the right occasion to spend the money. For the prices and the pedigree, though, you'd expect more from the décor and furniture. It genuinely felt like sitting in someone's dining room, just with a bigger bill at the end of the night. Worth knowing the full arc here, because it's a good one: Wallsé is chef Kurt Gutenbrunner's flagship, an Austrian restaurant that's occupied the same corner of the West Village since 2000. Gutenbrunner trained at Michelin-starred Tantris in Munich and spent a decade working under David Bouley before striking out on his own, and Wallsé earned its first Michelin star in 2006, holding it for an impressive 17 consecutive years. That streak ended in 2022, the exact window this visit fell into, so the "1 star" I noted at the time was Wallsé right at the edge of losing recognition it had carried for nearly two decades. The wine list is a genuine point of pride here too, all-Austrian and repeatedly named the best of its kind in New York, which tracks with the impressive collection on display. My friends and I ended up ordering what amounted to a self-assembled tasting menu: foie gras terrine and a hand-cut tartare with soft egg and caviar to start, then Wiener schnitzel with potato and cucumber salad, short rib "goulash" with young carrots and crème fraîche, a chicken breast with stem cauliflower and leek purée, and a Bavarian pretzel on the side. These are the exact dishes the restaurant is known for, the schnitzel especially is the one people consistently point to as the reason to come here. I'll be honest, I was disappointed across the board. I've spent real time in Vienna, multiple visits, and genuinely love the food there and the coffeehouse culture that comes with it. I came in hoping to recreate a piece of that. What I got instead felt like a kitchen trying to be clever for the sake of being clever, without a clear point of view behind any of it. Fine dining, at its best, gives you something unexpected but coherent, dishes with a real idea underneath them that reward the extra attention and the extra cost. This didn't feel like that. It felt like ambition without execution, dressed up and priced accordingly. I'm not a food critic, and I don't pretend to understand how hard professional kitchens actually are to run. But when a place misses the basics and charges a premium for the miss, I'm going to say so. Impressive wine list, impressive room in theory, food that didn't back any of it up on the night I was there. Given they've since lost the star that got me in the door in the first place, I don't think I was alone in that read. read more

Wallse delivers a fantastic and refined Austrian dining experience in a lovely West Village setting. This was my first time dining on fine Austrian cuisine. Very impressive experience and atmosphere. The ambiance, with its high ceilings and stunning artwork by Julian Schnabel, feels special and elegant, yet still approachable. The service was attentive and knowledgeable, with our waiter guiding us through the extensive Austrian wine list with ease. The food is where Wallse truly shines. I am a vegetarian, but my colleague shared that the veal Wiener schnitzel is a must-try. Also try the white asparagus appetizer and the delicate flavors of the cod entree. For dessert, the apple strudel was an incredible, authentic finish to the meal. Overall, Wallse is a top-tier restaurant that offers a unique and memorable culinary journey through modern Austrian cuisine, perfect for a special occasion. read more

I came here by myself for a Restaurant Week dinner (which is quite a good deal (3 courses for $60) given the regular prices). I had the octopus appetizer (the octopus was perfectly done but I felt like its delicate taste was overpowered by the vinaigrette in which it was served), the schnitzel main course (very very good), and the strudel dessert plate (absolutely outstanding). My server was lovely, although I did notice that one of the other fellows was stone-faced as has been noted elsewhere. I'm taking off one star a bit because of the octopus, but mostly because of the music. The volume was fine, but the choice (classic rock) was very odd for a place with an otherwise elegant Austrian vibe. I mean, I wasn't necessarily expecting Strauss waltzes, but I think something more subdued would have set the mood better. read more

I had no expectations / we actually came here just for the Salzburger Nockerl but to great surprise the food was really good here! We got a recommendation to try the white asparagus soup. It was very unique, almost milky. The presentation was excellent too. Then for a main I got rack of lamb. It came on a bed of beluga lentils in red wine jus with turnips artfully placed around it. So soo good. The meat was rare and the lentils very flavorful - the combo was divine. Next time I'd skip on the chocolate pie and go straight for the Salzburger Nockerl. It was soft and light and just right on the sweetness. Also great teas here! The only thing.. our waiter had a strange attitude. He was stone cold and maybe it's because we didn't order wine or a bunch of cocktails. Whatever it was, we dreaded when he came to check on us. Also his elbow was about an inch away from my face when we was serving the table next to ours. Manners 0 stars. read more

Ambiance (5/5): The restaurant is very small with minimal/simplistic decor. There's a full bar and several small tables nearby. Might be a little tight on seating but it wasn't busy on the particular early weeknight. Service (5/5): The service is spectacular with constant check-ins throughout our whole dining experience. No complaints. We came for their $60 NYC Restaurant Week 2025 menu. Overall expect small portions but a really great presentation and a blast of different flavors and texture. Watermelon martini - delish! It was made using real watermelon, which we saw being prepared at the bar. Spicy summer corn soup - I really liked the presentation and it was tons of unexpected flavor, tiny bit of spice. Grilled Bavette Steak - The meat was pretty tender although I did not think it had too much taste. The sides of the root and red cabbage were flavored well and complimented the steak. A little underwhelmed by this dish. Salzburger Nockerl - very unique, light, and not overly sweet Perhaps for a place which used to be a Michelin star, I was kinda expecting more. It was operating and felt like a fine dining experience! read more

Slick quaint Village restaurant with good service and Austrian / German comfort food 5 star ambience: the exterior os almost like a movie set specification for "quaint Greenwich Village bistro". Despite being open for a long time , it's only My first time here AND it's during restaurant week ( now month ). While prices are soaring everywhere , I think this place is worth trying . I had the chicken liver mousse ( rich as one would expect and probably better shared ), schnitzel ( perfectly pounded and breaded ), and the soufflé . Glad they have RW wine deals as well . Surprise it's not super busy ( maybe because it's a weekday - Monday ) and summer ( most people are away). Cute cozy restaurant in the west village , great service and ambiance . read more

Went for the interesting restaurant week menu! Great pork schnitzel, perfectly prepared. Interesting "roulade" preparation of the bavette steak-- which was good, not great. Chilled corn soup to start was yummy and both desserts (elderberry panna cotta, and Salzburger nockerl) were excellent. The space could use a refresh, but still it's still nice. read more

We've been coming here for decades, and with good reason The food is always exceptional The service is always spot on The overall experience is great For the most recent visit, we ordered the following and each were WONDERFUL: Salted pretzel with butter (easily in the top three pretzels I've ever had) White asparagus with lobster (a modest portion...I coped) Rainbow beat salad (the rainbow was largely missing...but very pleasant nonetheless) Foie gras terrine, spot on Steak Tatare, I'm not telling the doc Halibut, I assume this is souvied...it has a luxurious texture and the other components were so nice...tiny chanterelles, peas, a carrot concoction Our waiter did an exceptional job Perfect demeanor, great advice, there at the right time We'll return...as we always do read more

First time I walked by this place, the fragrant aroma lingered for a long time, which made me want to come back and try it. Finally made it out to this place tonight, and I have to we are very disappointed. Service: Staff were all pretty friendly and welcoming, however noticed that our waiter was attentive but felt insincere at times. What we ordered: Oyster with tuna and caviar. 1/5 For a $27 appetizer, these have got to be one of the worst oyster we have ever had. The oysters were the size of a $1 coin, and were very dry. It seemed they added the raw tuna to cover up for the lack of the oyster salt water you expect from fresh oysters. Furthermore, the oysters / tuna were a bit fishy/not fresh tasting. Lobster soup: 2/5 Grossly fishy...there is also no lobster inside or it at all. Just tastes like a fishy tomato soup with hints of broccoli? Lobster Ravioli: 3/5 Most of the lobster was over cooked and really tough and chewy. I would say they did an excellent job on the sauce. (Honestly would have to say it's the best part of the entire meal). The ravioli itself however was gross because it was difficult to pick up without the entire thing falling apart. I expected more from a $48 dish. Short rib: 3/5 The beef was a bit tough to chew...and the sauce looked a bit unappetizing. There was no wow factor for the marinade and sauce. They call the side a "potato purée", however it's just some basic mashed potatoes that did not have any wow factor. Disappointing for a main dish with such a high price point. Pretzel w/ Butter ( appetizer) 2/5 Tiny pretzel, nothing special about it. The butter wasn't even that unique. Drinks: 5/5 Delicious cocktails and mock tails. Ordered the gurke which tasted like a dill cucumber refreshing spritzer. Mock tail was a delicious cucumber mint mix. Although we are glad we came back to try this place, don't think we would come back here. The price is not worth it for a meal that's mediocre at best. We were looking for something moderately festive, with a European flair for a pre-Christmas dinner on our last night in NYC, and stumbled upon Wallsé, which seemed like a good choice to continue the theme of that day that started with the Neue Galerie. The food turned out to be alright for the most part, but not particularly memorable, more of a run-of-the-mill menu and execution. I didn't find much of the claimed fine dining, to be honest, other than in the check. Not worth a repeat for me, especially given steeper than justified prices and somewhat pushy and condescending service. All in all, I hate to say it, this place appeared to be long past its prime and overdue for a new and fresh chapter that does not cling to its Michelin-starred past. read more

BAD (!) experience at Wallse, waiter kept knocking into my chair and body but never apologized. Service was extremely underwhelming and pushy -- I've never in my life felt so guilt-tripped into ordering more food. Waiter's manner was scolding and surly, maybe because the restaurant was virtually empty. We ordered the Beef Tartare ($27), which was all right, followed by the Scallops ($46) and Beef Goulash ($45). Side was Cucumber & Potato Salad ($13), which was actually two discrete piles (small) of cucumber and then potato. Best part of dinner was the side. Drinks were okay, we got the GURKE (Dill Aquavit, Lime Juice, Cucumber Juice, Green Chartreuse, $21) and NITRO ESPRESSO MARTINI (Austrian Truman Vodka, Coffee, Nitro Infused, $21). Ambience was nice, some vaguely de Kooning-looking art on the walls, other paintings were giving dark and Austrian. Art program here is great. Tipped customary 18% though it was a miserable experience. NOT RECOMMENDED. read more

Fantastic Austrian food in the West Village with impeccable service. The vibe was old New York sophistication paired with global influences. The clientele seemed European and Asian but more mature than the typical "scene-y" crowd that permeates the neighborhood. We ordered the beets, beef tartare, foie gras and a few pretzels as appetizers. This place served the best pretzel I've ever had in my life. The truffle spatzle tasted like risotto and was very good. The glazed duck breast was full of flavor. The portions were reasonable. For dessert, we got the black forest cake and the salzburger nockerl. The nockerl was the showstopper - it was a fluffy soufflé that was baked to perfection. read more

Very good modern Central European restaurant. I suspect a lot of diners will find it to be just okay even compared to second tier neighborhood Italian joints. Food was good but I was really disappointed with the service and how rude the staff was to my aunt who had suggested we go there because she loved it the first time she went. When we were the only ones in the restaurant and she asked if it was possible to turn the music down the host came to our table to tell her no this is the level it's always at and never changes and when she said "it sounds like it just got louder though" he said "it didn't not get louder I've done this with you too many times and I'm not getting into it again" she'd only ever been there once before and was shocked and confused by that response. read more

Transported me back to Mitteleuropa where I grew up. Even the tiles in the restroom feel like Kärntner. The food is authentic and legitimate, well executed. Stumbled across this yelp page while looking at other places in the area and recalled our rather strange experianced at this restaurant. The waiter was so over attentive that it was almost like he should have just taken a seat and dined with us. I recall writing directly to the restaurant the next day to share this experianced as I don't find joy in publicly embarrassing anyone in a public way. They never replied, even after sending a follow up a week later. Fast forward to today, it irked me to see so many positive reviews without mention of the strange service we experianced, and that just doesn't ring believable. The food was good, but the service made it too uncomfortable to enjoy. The contempt shown by the restaurant not writing back to my feedback with even a simple reply made it so we never returned again. read more

Solid 2 star for food, 4 service. 4 star for ambiance. Came here for a date night and we were not impressed by the food. We ordered: - Oysters / tuna tartare and caviar - pretzel - lobster tomato soup - beef goulash? - lobster ravioli - sides of the Mac and cheese and mashed potato The tuna/caviar was very fishy. It didn't taste fresh. Pretzel was alright. Bread and butter basically Lobster tomato soup was fishy at the top. The mixture was parting because the base was creamier than the top. Definitely a pass. The beef was very generic. Nothing different or amazing about it. Definitely something that should be passed on. I liked the lobster ravioli but it literally came with 2 raviolis that were so delicate that it fell apart when you picked it up. The lobster tail was tiny and over cooked. The Mac and cheese was the most mushy macaroni pasta I have ever had. The mashed potatoes were good but that really should not be the highlight. Overall, food was eh. A bit basic. As some others noted; the menu does not change although it looks as if it does. Not worth the price and probably not a place I would return to deliberately. read more

I hosted a Wine Wednesday event here because Wallse supposedly has the largest Austrian wine menu in the country. I'm all about them superlatives. Plus, my trip to Vienna is one of my favorite trips I've ever taken. We got off to a shaky start and the rest of the night continued to be eh. The hostess was annoyed that I asked if our table of four could be next to our friend's table for two. They didn't have to be the same table--just next to each other. Mind you, this was right at opening (6pm) and the entire restaurant was empty. Eventually, after some huffing, she managed to secure a large table for 6 for all of us. Food, food, food. My Halibut was fine but not too remarkable, and I'd avoid getting the side of Braised Red Cabbage, as it tasted too similar to sauerkraut (unless you like that). The Quark Spatzle was probably the most interesting dish on the menu. Starchy and creamy--just like I like my carbs. The classic Wiener Schnitzel was decent, but I remember having better in Austria. Desserts are where Wallse shines best. The Salzburger Nockerl are unique clouds of creamy joy that you will want to inhale. The Topfen Schnitten was tasty without being too sweet (the highest compliment an Asian can bestow on a dessert). And as for the wine? Well, they promised big, and they delivered. We got a binder full of Austrian wine choices. Glasses ranged from ~$15-$30, and bottles ran as low as ~$50 and as high as you-cann't-afford-this. We imbibed a lot of Gruner Veltliner, of course (a must), and then a bunch of other funky German-sounding names I can't remember. Our sommelier was great and didn't make us feel like doofuses for asking questions. Other things to note: They did nothing for my birthday, despite the fact that it was indicated on our reservation (the hostess remarked on it). And I know they do birthday celebrations because another table got a dessert with a lit candle on it. Whomp, whomp. Also, int rue Austrian fashion, they don't rush you from your table when you're done eating. You can linger as long as you want. Which is great except in NYC, where everyone is trying to outrun time to their next destination. read more

Came here on Saturday with my boyfriend for an early Valentine's Day dinner, and we were pleasantly surprised. The ambience, first off, is very romantic and cozy. We had a candle-lit table decorated with real tulips, and the walls are really nicely decorated with art. Our waiter was extremely attentive, checking in on us every so often to clear our plates or refill our waters. THE RABBIT SPATZLE HERE IS TO DIE FOR. So creamy, meat was tender, & lots of veggies. I would come back here just to eat this again. We had to also try the classic Wiener Schnitzel, and my boyfriend had the Halibut. The combo of flavors in the Wiener Schnitzel is so lovely - fruity, citrusy, savory, and creamy all in one dish. We ended our meal with the apple strudel. Overall great place to try Austrian food! I know there's a lot of mixed reviews on this place, but we both thought it was well-deserving of its Michelin star. read more

Wallse is criminally underrated and woefully under-patronized, and don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise. I have wanted to try Wallse for ages. Somehow, since it's been on my radar, I've made it to Austria twice and Wallse 0 times. So when they reopened this fall, I immediately booked a reservation. My friend + I did two 3 course menus; we got: FOIE GRAS TORCHON: I don't care for foie gras so my friend pretty much kept this one to herself, but picture attached for those interested. LOBSTER ROSTI: Impressed with both the quality + size of this dish. Huge chunks of buttery lobster garnished with mushrooms and leeks served over potato. I didn't expect to love this dish, and yet it's the one I can't stop thinking about weeks later. SPATZLE: With rabbit and mushrooms. Exceeded expectations. HALIBUT: This was the one dish I wasn't totally wild about. Served with cucumber, dill, and chanterelle mushrooms. The fish was fresh and well cooked but didn't have the 'wow' factor that the other plates had. VENISON: Did NOT expect to love this as much as we did. Served with cabbage and elderberry sauce. Really, really interesting; our favorite entree. SALZBURGER NOCKERL: Interesting dessert - served with huckleberries underneath. I've been to Salzburg myself and had never heard of it; a sweet and light way to end the meal. SACHERTORTE: I had asked our server about sachertorte and kaiserschmarrn which are my two favorite Austrian desserts. Unfortunately, they had neither that day, but he did come out with a small amuse bouche size serving of sachertorte out of nowhere!! Made my day. WINE/DRINKS: Our sommelier was really, really lovely - Gruner Veltliner is my favorite wine but I don't pretend to be an expert. She was really patient with us and explained the differences between the different wine regions; we ended up with a Gruner that we both enjoyed. All in all, we were impressed. My only disappointment was that their schnitzel was veal instead of pork. I LOVE schnitzel but I don't eat veal, so that was off the table for me. Otherwise, totally happy with the food, service, & atmosphere, and would be thrilled to go back. read more
