Returned here a few days ago and they had a special menu centered around asparagus... it may not sound exciting to many, however, your opinion is bound to change if you try any of their special menu items. For starters, these asparagus are white and huge, they pack a flavor unlike any asparagus I've ever had in my life. They're juicy, slightly sweet and hold their crunchy texture. I ordered the Wienerschnitzel, which was served on top of a few of these special asparagus spears, with a lingonberry jam to accompany the entree. It was delicious and so satisfying. read more

I'm a sucker for Blood Sausage, one of the specialties tonight and it was fantastic as expected. A tremendous variety of Austrian and German beers and wines, but i'll stick with the Elderflower Lemonade. Wifey had the goulasch tonight - it's my usual, and was terrific as always. It's Spargelzeit in Germany from the end of April until June 24th and Katja is the place to celebrate it here in NYC. What is Spargelzeit ? It's the celebration of the white asparagus (Spargel) season that is so beloved in Germany. Katja has several dishes on this tender vegetable that is less grassy tasting than its green cousin. Traditionally, it's eaten with hollandaise sauce and boiled potatoes but I always opt for sliced German ham. A small is good enough for a light meal. It is pricey at 27 dollars but the asparagus are imported from Europe and they are thick. You'd be hard pressed finding good looking ones such as Katja's in Whole Foods, sadly. Cafe Katja makes their spargel perfect. Tender and with just the right amount of butter that is barely noticeable but gives a slight salty creamy taste. The accompanying ham I choose is similar a French style boiled ham so it's not too salty which will take away the flavor of the spargel. For an app I get liptauer. It's a smooth whipped slightly salty cheese that is perfect for smearing onto the toasted rye bread that comes with it. A substantial size plate , it also comes with a variety of radishes and pickled vegetables. I got the wine that is recommended for the spargel. It was good but I'm not a sommelier so I can't tell a good wine from a bad one hahaha. However , if beers your thing i do like their assortment here. Here's where I give a star off. I never cared for the service. They seem aloof. Barely a smile and I had to stare at my empty water glass for far too long. Also , handing the bill without me asking is rude. It wasn't like I was there for long and they had plenty of seating. Also, they sat others down for drinks 10 minutes before closing so I was politely asked to pay and go for no real reason except for maybe bc I was a solo diner. Also, although I was seated outside, the parties both on my left and right lit up cigarettes and the waitress turned a blind eye. Who wants to inhale a mouthful of nasty cigarette smoke when biting into some good food ? read more

I can not get enough of this restaurant!! It's one of my all time favs for not just the cozy ambiance but the food itself. Their entrees come with certain sides but they're so flexible with switching the 2 sides for others on the menu which I can't say for other restaurants similar. I always have to get spatzel and here I can just swap out a side to get my fix! The servers here are always amazing, but the last time when my fiancé and I sat in the cozy booth corner, we had an amazing waitress that was so kind to us and actually chatted with us when we interacted with each other. I really regret not getting her name because she was impeccable!!! We told her this was my fav restaurant in the city and she even let us try some drink (it's like a post dinner digestive alcohol- forgot the name) on the house! Came here for brunch after doing a Tenament Musuem tour. Service was good not amazing. The waiter who served us seemed distracted even though it wasn't partuclaraly busy. Great German ambiance. The beer and the food were also good. Beer was cold, food was hot. Bratwurst was nothing to write home about, the potato cucumber sald was out of ths world though. My fellow diners had the bacon wrapped cheesewurst which was excellent. Very good place but not the most amazing german food I have ever had. Celebrated my husband's 60th birthday here with my daughter and her boyfriend -- what a perfect choice! Delicious food, festive atmosphere, and the service was absolutely chef's kiss. Our favorite dishes were the schnitzel, the eggplant parm schnitzel special, the pretzel with perfect mustard, and the herring/beet salad -- all spectacular -- plus of course all the fun Austrian beers (including the all-important giant boot-shaped stein). Our server Angel was a delight, birthdaying the crap out of my sometimes-sour spouse, who was BEAMING by the end of the night. (The schnapps, which Angel partook in with us, sure helped.) Cafe Katja is a solid restaurant with good and friendly service. I can see this place as a great place to gather with friends who like beer and wine German style. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and there were plenty of places to sit. Some of the tables are in odd positions relative to each other, which may make maneuvering around a little tricky without bumping into other patrons. However, the German ambience is unmistakable and they have a very large u shaped bar that may wrap all around, but I did not see all around the bar area. I arrived when only the brunch menu was available. Wienerschnitzel was on the brunch menu, but not Jaegerschnitzel. So I opted for the beef Goulash with Spaetzle noodles. Accompanying the Gulasch, I ordered their dark beer, Koestritzer, an excellent pairing with the Gulasch. The Gulasch had nice chunks of tender beef in that savory stew or sauce, with the Spaetzle noodles offering a firm al dente, slightly buttery counterpoint. The slight sweetness of the stewed beef allowed the palate to be washed down with that beer, highlighting its slightly sweet malt. The malt and richness of the stewed beef come together nicely and is great comfort food for these colder months. The full menu looks promising and Cafe Katja is a place worth revisiting. Prices are reasonable and will allow you to revisit without fear of overcharging. If you live nearby, this would be a reliable place to be a regular and experience the full menu. A good value and very solid three star experience. read more

Came here for dinner last night without reservations and we were promptly seated - first 80s degree day of the year so everyone was out and also the first time Cafe Katja has outdoor seating this year. First of, I want to give a shout out to our amazing waiter, Felipe. We can tell he was extremely busy since it was so beautiful out and everyone wants to eat out. Felipe has an incredible attitude, overly apologetic for the delay when it's not his fault and had great food recommendations. The goulash soup wasn't available so he recommended the Frittaten soup. We had the pretzel (the butter spreads were so yummy) and Frittaten soup to start - light and refreshing. We shared the Emmentaler sausage and Fall Spätzel. Sausage was cooked well and tasted great with mustard. I love the fall spätzel - broth was creamy and not too sweet. We also shared the Topfenpalatschinken for dessert. I personally thought the plum compote was a tad too sour for me but my German boyfriend said it was perfect. I will definitely come back here. Service was quick and attentive even while waiting for food. This was a great experience for my first time trying Austrian food even though it is definitely more on the pricier side of restaurants. The liverwurst main taste profile for me was allspice. Personally, I was not the biggest fan, but the pickled vegetables that came with it was good. The emmentaler sausage was chewy yet tender - we heard that they make all their sausages in-house - and the dumplings that came with it were very soft. The jagerschnitzel was a little dry, but the spatzle was perfectly cooked and so conducive to eating. For dessert, we got the topfentorte, which resembled a cheesecake but lighter and with a more sour cream taste to it. The fermented cherries cut through the heavy of it. The apfel (apple) strudel was warm and the apples were not too mushy yet not crunchy. It paired well with the whipped cream on top. Overall, I would recommend the emmentaler sausage, spatzle, and the apfel strudel. The portion are large and will most definitely fill you up! read more

We attempted a meal of schnitzel at this restaurant due to above average reviews and reputation. Using the steep narrow stairs near the kitchen at the back of the inner building after we ordered was challenging, and I don't have any mobility issues or high heels. I could hear the cook pounding away preparing food, and yes, lower quality cuts do need tenderization on one way or another. I don't know if the owners/managers are the only Central Europeans who were involved in its actual product, but the schnitzel was as tough as shoe leather, impossible to cut, and inedible. My guest and I tried to fill up on the small boiled potatoes and tiny green salad alongside it, but the experience was so low level that we declined the waiters offer to take any of the food to go. He seemed nice enough and shared a joke about the whiskey bar across the street that we may want to fill in with. We visited early evening on a a weeknight, sat at an outside table, as the only other guests were a large group finishing up inside. I've eaten different types of schnitzels all over the US and Europe, and never had to give up on any until now. The Wren Pub was easily far superior. read more

Cafe Katja is an Austrian restaurant and bar that opened in Manhattan, New York in 2007. It was founded by business partners Erwin Schröttner and Andrew Chase. The two met when they both worked in the kitchen at Monkey Bar. Schröttner was raised in Austria and always complained that no one knew the correct technique for pouring the perfect draft beer. Eventually the duo decided to open their own Austrian restaurant. Schröttner named it Katja after one of his daughters. The menu features several staples that are often found in Austrian and German cuisine, such as Bavarian-style pretzels, liverwurst, beef gulasch, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and "Katja's Ruben" (made with pork belly, gruyere cheese, kraut and pickles). My wife and I had dinner plans at another restaurant with her parents. We arrived about an hour early, so we decided to walk around the area to see if we could get a pre-dinner cocktail at a wine bar or someplace similar. There are several restaurants and bars near the intersection of Broome and Orchard Streets. We saw Cafe Katja and decided to grab a table. Since this was the first official weekend of Oktoberfest, I decided to order a full stein of Hofbräu Dunkel and my father-in-law ordered a half liter of Radeberger Pilsner. My wife and mother-in-law both ordered Frozen Watermelon Margaritas. Everyone was really happy with their drink choices; they really hit the spot. We sat right away since we got there in the afternoon just to have some beverage. The servers were accommodating and it looked like there were three of them asking us what we needed. Now let's talk food. The charcuterie board were all meat based. My family enjoyed all of it .I had my share of toast and the cheese mousse and the pickled onions. The sampler platter was really good for four people if you just want to munch as opposed to the suggested two people. We had the espresso martini which was very light. Be ready to pay $$.
