Never a bad meal! The best spot for Ukrainian and a favorite before the orpheum theatre!

I hadn't been to Veselka in a while, but my wife was craving it last night so we decided to swing by. We were greeted at the door by who I believe was the owner, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. He checked in on us throughout the meal, which really added a personal touch. My wife ordered the potato pancake combo and chose matzo ball soup and beef stroganoff as her sides. I went with the Ukrainian meatballs with mushroom gravy. We also shared a side of four steamed pierogies (short rib and potato), plus an extra side of beets and horseradish, although we later realized both of our entrees already came with that. Everything came out promptly and was absolutely delicious. My meatballs reminded me of an elevated Salisbury steak, in the best way possible, and we even had leftovers to take home. There is a reason this place is an East Village staple: the food is excellent and the hospitality makes you feel like you are eating at grandma's house.

Proud Ukrainian establishment with a hearty menu. Interior has classic New York diner vibes. Pierogis are delicious, both boiled and fried. All of the fillings we tried were good, it's hard to pick favorites. Servers are friendly and food is quick to come out.

Delicious food, fast friendly service. Positive energy and although no reservations accepted, staff attentive to move things along. Tables are a bit tight so the wait staff repeatedly bumped my chair on a busy Sunday night. According to fans, this place is always full - at all hours. Not surprisingly. Blintzes cooked and filled to perfection. Matzah ball soup more stuff than broth so hard to judge flavor yet matzah ball adequately fluffy. Schnitzel almost paper thin - a style and technique that leaves more crisp crunch than taste of chicken. Latkes were also crisp and quite thick - more texture than taste. Looking forward to a return visit to explore further.

How could you go here without having the borscht? It's been a few years but it's just as I remembered- warm, cozy, quick and friendly service. Along with the borscht, we also had some potato pierogies. Make sure your party is all together- the party won't be seated until everyone is there.

I came here last weekend for breakfast. It was my first time. It is a Ukrainian place so they are known for alot of specialities but just to name one they are known for their pierogis. I did not have any but I did have their potato latke. Wow delicious and I had an egg sandwich with cheese and bacon. The Sandwich was ok nothing special at all. I also had an iced cappuccino which was pretty tasty I must say. I would come back here to try more items and for sure get another latke. The ambiance is fine they also have outdoor seating. Service was a bit slow but it was pretty crowded too.

Came here without a reservation on a Friday early evening around 6pm with a party of 4 and didn't have to wait too long. When we left around 7:30pm though, there was a line around the block! We got beef stroganoff x 2, stand with ukraine bowl, and a vegetarian plate. All the food was really good! Might be slightly on the pricier side for what you get but the pierogies were excellent and the beef in the stroganoff was pretty tender. Would recommend!

We ordered both the meat and the deluxe vegetarian combination plates. The meat plate included beef and potato pierogi, a meat stuffed cabbage, and a variety of sides. The deluxe vegetarian plate came with cheese, potato and mushroom pierogi, a vegetarian stuffed cabbage and sides as well. Each combination plate also comes with a cup of soup or salad. My favorites were the pierogi and the borscht soup. They were so delicious! The service was prompt and attentive.

Every dish was good! Very popular busy spot. You wait in line for a table. It moves quick. Food comes out of the kitchen very fast so tables move fast. Loved it!

Walked by this Ukrainian restaurant numerous times and finally took the time to try this spot out. I've always seen a massive line wrapped around their shop on the weekends, so looks like it's a popular spot. The Pierogis are probably the most popular thing to order here. We got the 8 pc plate ($20), which we mixed a matched between Potato, Meat, BEC, and Short Rib. You can just order this and have it be your meal or treat it as an appetizer like we did. We got all of the pierogis fried. To try a variety of dishes, we ordered the Potato Pancake Combo Plate ($23) which we chose the Beef Stroganoff and the Ukrainian Borscht as our choices. Loved the Beef Stroganoff due to its tenderness which they slow cooked. Goes great over the potato pancakes. The Ukrainian Borscht is a classic Ukrainian soup worth trying. We also ordered the Veselka's Reuben ($19), which consisted of Sliced Krakovska ham, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Ukrainian dressing, dijon mustard and pickles on rye bread. This was delicious, even as leftovers after heating it up in a convection oven. Lastly, we tried their signature dessert: Single Cheese Blintz ($10). This is a Ukrainian-style crepes filled with lightly sweetened farmer's cheese. This was something I wasn't too fond of, probably mainly because of the cheese. Maybe adding raspberry sauce would have helped to add more flavor to it, but I feel like this wasn't for me.

The best of the best for a reason! Comforting, homemade feeling food but with the most flavorful high quality ingredients, just knocks it out of the park each time and I miss it the most every time I have to leave NYC. The cabbage roll, Ukrainian borscht and pierogis are MUST haves! I dream of the borscht, seriously. Service is just the nicest, like being at a dear friend's house.

Is there still an outdoor area and is it covered?

Yes, as of the end of July, there is still covered outdoor seating.

Which of the items are vegan if any? I only see some vegetarian options?

    Nothing is vegan

Do you take reservations? If not , how hard is it to get a table for a party of 5 on Friday night around 8pm?

    No reservations necessary

    Is there outdoor seating?

    Yes, plenty.

Are they asking for the excelsior pass or other proof of vaccinations? I only want to eat out at places that are doing that.?

We will once the city and state mandate it to do it. The state says they will issue guidelines on what to accept as of August 16th. All staff members are required to show proof or are forced to wear masks if not.

    Is the outdoor area heated?

    No I don't believe so

    Is it closed?

    For the quarantine

Does anyone know if they sell gift cards/Veselka merch inside the restaurant?

I do not know about gift cards, BUT I do know they sell Veselka mugs, t-shirts and an excellent Veselka cookbook inside the restaurant!

Does anyone know if they offer the full Menu 24/7? I'm the weirdo that likes borscht and stew for breakfast!…

I believe you can order anything off the menu any time of the day.

Are reservations required for a Friday evening?

They do not take reservations. My fiancé and I went on the weekend there, and we only had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. Hope this helps!

    Do they have vegan options?

Yes, you can definitely find a few options there that would work. I think meatless stuffed cabbage and potato pancakes should be suitable.

I see that Breakfast is served All Day but what time is the Dinner Menu available? Can I order off the Dinner Menu for breakfast during the week? Thank you.

You can order anything on the menu anytime.

I had a cup of borscht and an order of dumplings, which were both great. The borscht was something I will crave for a while. The broth just had an incredible, balanced flavor. I thought since my food was pretty warm up and serve, that it would be a quick meal, but the service was pretty slow. I sat and waited a while. It was Mother's Day, so I think they were busier than usual with catering orders and moms and grandmas stopping by for desserts for brunch at home. So the pace of service may have been affected/out of ordinary for that reason. For those visiting for the first time: Take a look at the menu upstairs on the sidewalk before going down to the restaurant, because there was only menu downstairs at the counter where you order, so anyone coming for the first time will have to flip through the menu while holding up the line to order unless they know what they want already. When you go downstairs, the restaurant is behind the first door to your left; it's not well-marked. A lot of reviews say it's cash-only, but that may have been under the prior owners/management, because they definitely took credit cards/Apple Pay when I was there last weekend. If you love Ukrainian food, Streecha is well worth a visit. I love its no frills, classic approach to dining. It's a great option for a casual lunch if you're in the area and are craving some Eastern European fare.

Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. Apparently there is more than one location in Manhattan. The inside reminded me of a classic diner. Comfy and with a pretty cool vibe. We all slid into a booth and looked over the seasonal offerings along with their standard menu. I was lured by the chicken Kyiv based on the picture of having two rolled up chicken cutlets stuffed with dill and other yumminess, but was a bit disappointment when it arrived with a single small cutlet on my plate with two heaping mounds of potatoes mash and broccoli. I instantly had regret when I should have gotten the borscht soup with pierogies, but wanted to try something I wouldn't usually. I should've stuck to what was safe. A friend and I each got a soup to start our meal, along with sharing a Potato Pancake. The Matzoh Ball Soup and Potato Pancake were good, but not great. However, I enjoyed the Pork & Cabbage Soup enough to take home a quart. For entree, we shared a Deluxe Meat Plate that was quite delicious. All three pierogi flavors were great, but the short rib was my favorite, followed closely by the mushroom & sauerkraut. I also really enjoyed the grilled kielbasa, but sadly it was served at room temperature. Lastly, the stuffed cabbage is not usually my thing, yet I liked this version. Once again, it was served barely warm. Thankfully, we finished on a high note. My friend really wanted the Challah Bread Pudding, which was moist and tasty. However, the lovely waitress advised us strongly to try the Medovyk. This Ukrainian layered honey cake had a wonderful texture, not too creamy or sweet, with a great walnut flavor. We were extremely happy with her suggestion. We also really liked the diner vibes that felt warm and inviting. This was so close to a five star review. The main reason for the deduction was the temperature of our food being served. Hopefully that problem will be solved on my next visit.

This relative newcomer to the fast-casual scene serves Ukrainian-American fusion items ranging from corndogs and borscht (vegan!) to the namesake blintz wraps and boxes. A blintz is a soft, thin, spongy pancake of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. Blintz Box offers five varieties of blintz wrap, including the pescatarian-friendly Englishman (fried beer-battered cod, french fries, slaw) and the vegetarian-approved portabella wrap. I opted for the Philadelphia, their take on a classic cheesesteak. To better sample the range of the menu, I also ordered the loaded fries with crispy fried chicken on top. The loaded fries are a shareable size. The fries were hot and crispy, absolutely slathered in cheese and sauce, requiring a fork and napkin to stay tidy. The fried chicken filet added taste and crunch, making this feel like a proper meal. It also came with a delightful variety of pickles including pickled sport peppers, cucumbers, and jalapeño peppers. The Philadelphia blintz wrap was juicy and flavorful. The shaved beef, peppers, onions, and cheese combined in a gooey melange, which the tender and pliable blintz held in place for me to nibble. The blintz itself was malleable and well-suited for wrapping. Its mild flavor allowed the filling to steal the show. Hats off to the proprietors, a resilient husband-and-wife team who demonstrate the kind of hustling acumen that New York is known for.
