My review would really be a 3.5 but eh, wasn't impressed enough for a 4. Came here for lunch on a Tuesday around 2. Not busy but service was still kinda slow. The waiter was really nice though but maybe this wouldn't be a good place if you were in a rush. As for food, I got the ahi tuna fish taco, which other yelpers and the waiter raved about. To be honest, it was only okay. Not enough flavor on the tuna nor the accompanying items such as rice, tomatoes. Just kinda A-OK. Coworker's got the enchiladas which they said was good, huge lunch portions. My dish was not on the lunch special, so also a little more expensive than what tex mex food should be. read more

I would recommend that you go to the Stokes in the Old Market before you patronize this one. The menu is the same but the preparation & cleanliness is not. First, after we were seated we waited forever for a server, the table had food & rice from the previous customers all over it and my beer was brought out warm. I went with one of my old standbys - the Aztec Shrimp Salad. It was prepared the same way as the Old Market but with less attention to detail. This is a very nice place for a good-quality dinner. I came on a Tuesday night, and sat at the bar. Tuesday nights are currently 1/2 price nights on bottles of wine; I wasn't initially interested in a full bottle but the bartender said that they could package the bottle up for me to take out when I left. so I got a bottle of the Mud House (NZ) Sauvignon Blanc, feeling pretty extravagant since I was alone. That was the hard decision. The easy one was made before I entered the restaurant, based on some online customer review. Two words: fish tacos. I LOVE fish tacos. Period. The wine was a typical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, with lots of fruit in it, though maybe more citrus than exotic fruits. It had a tart acidity too, that was good. The first taste seemed a little flinty, which I like, but that faded pretty quickly - maybe it was my expectation for a sauvignon blanc that colored my taste. The food was awesome. I tried the black beans first - very round, earthy flavors, in part because of the queso blanco on top (NOT cheddar or some other meltable cheese). While they weren't spicy hot, they were flavorful and satisfying. The texture was nice too - the beans were broken down and smooth, but the skins still protected enough of the inside to show that these weren't just reconsituted from powder or something. The rice was also good - vibrantly red, with a similar hearty, not-too-hot flavor. Also, it was neither greasy nor dry, which apparently is tough to manage. The fish tacos came on soft white corn tortillas, with sizable chunks of well-browned grilled tilapia crowning the veggies underneath. To be honest, I didn't even notice what veggies were underneath - but it wasn't iceberg lettuce! The tilapia had a good earthy flavor, though it might have been ever so slightly dry for my taste. What I did miss in the fish tacos was cilantro - I love lots and lots of cilantro to give the fish some zing without overpowering the delicate fish (especially tilapia). But as a package it worked well together, and was very satisfying. The service was also excellent. Attentive without being overly solicitous or falsely chatty. Yeah, I got upsold to a bottle of wine from a glass, but hell, the thing was half price. Some of the other glasses were selling for $13 (and that's just whites). I also like the dcor - no boots and cow skulls here, just tasteful earth and red-toned hues on the walls, and more black on the floor and seat areas, with lots of track lighting so you could actually see without feeling like you're in an interrogation room. I'd go here on a date for sure (well, with my wife these days, but it looks like a great place for singles). The one thing I guess I don't get is the combination of Southwest food with a great wine list, especially not reds. Maybe I skipped over the meats too quickly, but I personally would not think to order a good cabernet or zinfandel with Southwest style foods. Well, someone else can handle that combo. I'll just savor the satisfaction of those tacos and sip this here sauvignon blanc. read more

I went for the first time not knowing anything about this place, just had heard of it. They have a regular menu with tacos and enchiladas and the such. They also have a changing menu of steaks and more expensive fare. We started with the mussels as an appetizer. Hmm... Awesome. The sauce was perfect. I had the sampler platter for my main course which I thought was not that great... There was some sauce on my mushroom and steak enchilada that had a whole lot of nutmeg in it. Not tasty. The beans had the same thing. I ate around it and the relleno was kinda gross too. For dessert we had Banana's Fargo? (Not banana's foster) Man this was really good. I'm not a huge fan of bananas but this was good. All in all you can spend about $10-15 on the regular menu or around $30 on the daily menu. read more

Actually if there was a "two-and-a-half stars" that is what I would prefer to give Stokes. I hadn't been here in quite some time and I quickly remembered why. My meal - eh - it had its ups and downs. Lets start with the downs. The black bean soup - it was blah and tasteless. Let's get some spice in there please. There was a flavor that I could not put my finger on, but other than a little smokiness, it tasted like it was straight from a can. The highlight was the soft fresh tortillas it was served with. My salmon salad on the other hand - NICE! (YAY!) It was a fun mix of salmon, corn, a spicy zip of fresh pico de gallo, pumpkin seeds, a creamy dressing, and a few other things that I cannot recollect. I would love to tell you what they were, but all of Restaurant Incs websites are "under construction." Overall - I may venture back to Stokes ... perhaps to sit outside some evening with a glass of wine and would definitely order the salmon again. It is disappointing though to menu wander and find Stokes so hit or miss. read more

Visited Stokes for lunch on Wednesday. We had the New Mexico Club Wrap and Fish Tacos. Both were good, as were the strawberry lemonades. Chips and salsa are offered and charged for as was the second bowl of chips, so they were pretty good but I wasn't expecting to be charged as most Tex-Mex joints offer them gratis. Decent atmosphere and good service. Nothing incredible but nothing terrible either. read more

My husband and I were referred to Stokes by a friend who said they had great chicken enchiladas. I ended up getting the Maya fire linguine and my husband got the Johnnie's big plate. We got to taste the chicken enchilada and I agree. It was good. The linguine was good too. My husband is from Michoacan so he knows carnitas and the carnita stuffed poblano pepper impressed him. I didn't like the guacamole because I thought it was sour and spoiled but the chef clarified that he uses vinegar as part of it. I'm just not used to eating it that way and plus I don't like vinegar. Other than that, the place was very delightful and I enjoyed the dinner. I would give it a higher ranking except I'm Mexican so I'm not really into non authentic Mexican food. Update. Noodles are not the same the last 3 times. They're very dense, gummy and dry. Mayan fire linguine was my favorite as it's flavorful with just the right kick. It has a little crisp brightness against a very creamy sauce. I love it's very saucy as well versus dry and sticky! The chicken has a blackened seasoning you will love. This is the place that started me on the Southwestern flavors obsession I currently have. The decor is unique, especially for Omaha, but if you are going somewhere because it looks cool, then fly to New York or Paris or Rome. I'm going to Stokes for the food. The only appetizer I stick with is the chips and guacamole. Outside of South O, it's pretty good guac and the chips are plentiful. I also ALWAYS go with a cup of their roasted corn chowder. It is more like a chowder puree, but it has an incredible adobo and corn flavor to it, plus you dip hot flour tortillas in it (or use them as your spoon). I typically stick with the tacos. I am a huge fan of the fish tacos and the brisket tacos. My wife and father LOVE their enchiladas...it's the only thing they ever get there. I haven't tried the desserts or explored their drink menu, but I am told by my friends and family they are on par with other good restaurants. read more

Had the seared tuna salad. For $15 I would have liked to have more ingredients than romaine lettuce, tuna and pico. The pico de gallo had an overwhelming cilantro taste. Tuna was too tough to cut with the butterknife at the table so I ended up mostly eating around it. Tried my date's good for you salad with salmon, which she enjoyed. Salmon was perfectly done and the pita bread was delicious. Wait staff was excellent, very quick and patient. Might be back to try other items on the menu, but won't try their salads. read more

Stokes is a place I don't immediately think of going but tonight seemed like a perfect place to go for HH. I've been to their HH before with my girlfriends and fiancé. It looks like other reviews are either hits or misses. We had a hit this afternoon. After a mid afternoon meeting next door, we were looking for dinner and said, "let's try Stokes." I walked in and the wood fire grill smell made me even hungrier. It wasn't too busy at that time and we had good service. The waiter was good-natured and my Baja fish tacos were great. Stokes Grill & Bar has the best enchiladas! When my husband and I are wanting good Tex-Mex with fantastic service, we go here - we're never disappointed! Our favorite server is Patrick who always goes above and beyond with his service and gives you great recommendations on the menu. This evening we ordered our normal Sharon's Enchiladas and happened to forget our leftovers Patrick had boxed up for us. Upon realizing it, I called them immediately and asked if they still had our to-go box. Although they had thrown it away, Patrick requested a new enchilada be made for us to pick up and take home. This was much more than we would've ever anticipated and truly went above and beyond. If you're looking for a fun atmosphere, superb drink list, fantastic food and over the top staff, this is the place to go. It's our favorite spot for a reason and we'll definitely be back! read more

This has been one of my favorite places to eat since I moved to Omaha ten years ago. In fact, after I came back from a European trip for the first time, a major craving of mine was their Sharon's Famous Chicken Enchiladas. Now, don't think high class Mexican, or even Tex-Mex. This place definitely has a Southwestern theme, but it's a little up-class. However, the great thing about it, other than the always consistently amazing food and drink/wine selection, is how friendly and casual the atmosphere. (The prices aren't pretentious, either.) The waitstaff treats you like a friend (without being creepy and sitting down next to you or something) and is prompt and courteous. But the FOOD. Stokes serves up amazing varieties of tacos, steaks, and funky but tasty southwestern varieties of typical "American contemporary"-style food. Yeah, it's more expensive than bar food. It's not a hole-in-the-wall bar. It's a fancy restaurant. Though, I hate to use the word "fancy." It's not that pretentious. But it is a "nice" restaurant, a place to take a date, a business contact, or just go yourself if you crazily crave the Sharon's Enchiladas, can't get enough of the enchiladas, must have the enchiladas, get them to-go for $10 and split it into two or three meals because you can't live without the enchiladas!.... Never really understood why some folks rave about this place. I've been here several times and the one downtown. I've never really had bad service but the food is not that great. Last time in I had the steak burritos or enchiladas and the gravy tasted like chocolate syrup mixed with hamburger and beans. Disgusting. It was recommended by the waiter whom by the way was quite the character-- he was good but his comedy didn't not make up for the awful food. Went to stokes to eat on a sleepy Sunday afternoon at 215. Figured a nice sit down meal and possibly a beer would tie up the afternoon nicely. Sat down after the hostess found 4 of us at a table. Several other tables and booths had diners enjoying the afternoon. Several servers around and walked by us a dozen times. After 15minutes of chatting we soon realized we didn't even have waters or met a waiter. Benefit of the doubt we waited 5 more minutes before walking out. Mentioned to the hostess that no one served us for 20 minutes. She stood there without saying a word and we soon realized that we are out of luck. Left for greener pastures and found an alternate afternoon restaurant. Sad, abysmal service may deter me from returning. read more

Had a very poor experience here. Two different tasteless pasta dishes, steak salad which consisted of wilted kale salad, a little pile of chopped red onion, about 3 oz of steak with a tablespoon of sauce, overcharged for an Old Fashioned cocktail. A total waste of a $100 bill. read more

Got the twisted garlic shrimp pasta, which I thought was fine. It was a bit too saucy, which masked any other flavors the dish might have had. There was a pretty generous portion of shrimp, but the plate was still a little pricey. Stokes is one of the better chain Mexican restaurants that I have tried. It has all of the staples of a cheap local Mexican place, with a few added luxury items. For example, my husband got enchiladas, which you can get anywhere.....and they were amazing! They would completely compete with any local or home cooked enchilada recipe in my opinion. Where as I got the ahi tuna fish tacos, I don't know about you, but I don't think I have ever seen ahi tuna on Mexican restaurant's menu before. They were also delicious. When we do go back however, I will definitely be getting the enchilada plate! They also had some wonderful margaritas, they were a little pricey, but strong enough to be worth it. read more

We used to be huge Stokes fans. This is my very first post. Very disappointing dinner this evening. Ordered the steak special and it was grizzly and fatty. When I received the bill they tried to charge me for the dinner. After they took the steak off the bill they still charged me for the side salad. My wife's dinner was a disappointment too. My cocktail party was marred by poorly catered food from Stokes (through their catering section called Restaurants Inc Catering). We paid almost $600 to have appetizers for 20 people delivered to our home. (including tax, delivery fee, driver tip). The food was NOT piping hot. The food was NOT fresh. The food seemed to have been sitting in a holding pattern for quite some time while waiting to be delivered. The wrapped asparagus was a huge rip-off. The scrawny, wrinkled, pencil size asparagus barely filled 1/4th of a 1/2 pan yet it cost $70!!! The chicken satay was soooo dry, it sucked the moisture out of ones mouth. The DRY chicken sliders (about 3 ounces of meat) were served on generic buns. The buns were not toasted, not buttered, without lettuce or tomato. It was a 3 oz piece of DRY chicken meat on a cold white bun. Blah. So much for my attempt to host a fancy cocktail party! When I complained to the catering manager, she apologized for my bad experience saying they rarely get complaints. She was downtown at other events and did not see my order go out. I realize my tiny $600 cocktail party is not worth the catering managers supervision...but did anybody at Stokes care??? My party was important to me!! The catering manager offered me $70 off of a future catered event. But, why should I risk another party to Stokes/ Restaurants Inc. Catering? Next time, I will order Jimmy Johns party platter and cater from Wheatfield's. Even HyVee catering is better than Restaurants Inc Catering. Restaurants Inc Catering stole my money from me. Great Food, even better staff. I had the baha fish tacos! YUMMO! the radishes in it made the flavor really pop. I ordered the Sharon enchilada to take home to my hubby. So when the bill came I accidentally had them do two checks. I was trying to put the tip on one and decided to just give her cash for the tip, scratched through it and wrote the bill amount on it. It was very busy! When the debit hit my checking account it charged a 28 dollar tip! I wish I could have given her such a great tip! I called and explained everything to John. The menu had a lot of amazing sounding entrees. They sounded like they had tons of flavor and spice. Ordered a dish that was $18, when it arrived to the table. It was basically a dish with cold oil in a warm cup, with 6 to 7 small pieces of shrimp, for the side it had 3 pieces of bread, and that was my meal for the night. It was just very disappointing bc on the menu, my dish was called fiery shrimp with chipotle oil. And it just didn't come close to the title. it wasn't even SPICY... my bf ordered a chicken and pasta dish. That was suppose to have habanero and other good spicies in it. But It was just very bland... idk I was just very disappointed bc the menu made everything sound amazing. But it was just a very basic place. read more

We tried stokes for the first time today and I was very impressed. This exceeded my expectations! It was the early dinner hour so not too busy. The atmosphere in the restaurant was pleasant. Not overly noisy which was great so we could talk at our table. My husband was happy the husker game was on. The server was very attentive, our glasses were never empty. Great service! I ordered the chicken enchiladas, they were great! Very cheesy. The rice was very good and had a lot of flavor and even though I am not a big fan of beans they weren't too bad. dinner was last minute tonight, I decided to check out Stokes I've been to the downtown location but strangely not the one by my place. I've wanted to try the Bananas fargo for awhile.. I had a delicious bacon cheeseburger on a brioche bun, and the bananas fargo ( caramel sauce chocolate sauce and bananas over ice cream with a fried tortilla. both was delicious even though I was a single diner wanting a table during rush hour on a busy Saturday night, they were more than kind and I very much enjoyed my meal. Last night was my first time eating here. I really had no idea what to expect, but my friends whom I dined with assured me it was going to be good....and, as we had been working in the yard all day with no opportunity to change clothes beforehand, dress code was not a problem. We were seated immediately, and drink orders were placed soon after that. The menu is extensive with a Southwest slant featuring a good selection of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. The four of us shared the nachos with cowboy beans. Chips were multicolored corn, with melted cheese, beans, tomatoes, and two salsas on the side, chipotle and verde, both very good. I wasn't feeling like a big meal so I went with a soup and salad, ordering Koko's Harvest Salad and a bowl of tortilla soup. The Caesar-inspired romaine salad has several toppings including grilled chicken breast, two dressings-sweet pepper and jalapeno ranch, along with chopped red onion, bacon bits, croutons, guacamole, and monterey jack cheese. The dressing was already on the salad, and was a little heavy-handed for me. Fresh avocado in the midwest is a little hard to pull off, quite often being overly ripe and heavily oxidized, giving it a dark greenish-brown color. I would order without it next time. All in all, a tasty and filling salad. Then there was the tortilla soup. It was like the lid of the salt shaker fell off in the kitchen. Three of us had ordered this soup, and all three of us had to send it back. The server was very apologetic, explaining that the soup was made from scratch...so I hope the soup chef will hopefully taste the soup before declaring it edible. Corn chowder was ordered up as a substitute, but I found it to be too thick and sweet, almost like batter for cornbread. Too bad. I will not go out of my way to eat here, but I would suggest it to friends looking for a decent place to eat in the suburbs on a Sunday night. read more

Stokes has always been a class act! We called on short notice for a reservation for 8 on a Saturday night, and they were able to accomodate us! The new location is very cozy, and nice. I've always been a fan of their terrific wine selection, Raspberry margaritas and Cabo Chicken Salad. My husband LOVES the steak and mushroom enchilada. It has a fun unique mole-like sauce with a touch of cinnamon that really sets it off! On our last visit, his dish had changed a bit. They are now using brisket instead of chunks of steak. We were not impressed, and asked that the waitress pass along our feedback to Chef John. Aside from that, eat at Stokes for a fun and classy southwestern experience! read more

This food is unlike any other I've tried. Very unique tastes! We ordered a bean dip and deviled eggs for appetizers; Both were mouth watering. For the main dish we had a variety of tacos and enchiladas. My kids are choosy at restaurants but ate their enchiladas right up (despite upset stomachs earlier in the day). The tortilla soup was very good and spiced just right. Ate at the bar and the service was great.
