Stokes Adobe is a historic landmark in Monterey that's rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of James and Josefa Stokes (former owners) and James' victims...just in time for Halloween!
Eight years ago, when I dined at Restaurant 1833, no ghosts to be seen or weird noises to be heard.
Pass forward to 2022, it's now Stokes Adobe [Restaurant]. As I walked through the quiet dining room to the restroom, I was hoping to hear more than the creaking floor I was walking on. Nada.
Then again, if I saw or heard something creepy, I would be the first one running out the door, miss a step, faceplant onto the cement floor with my dress over my head...mooning the entire patio. OOOF.
Stokes Adobe is a one year young restaurant that took over Restaurant 1833. They're a recent add to the Michelin Guide (not Michelin stars) offering dog-friendly outdoor dining which is what sold me. If you plan on dining outside, rezzies are highly recommended on Resy because the patio was poppin'.

* Fortaleza Blanco (Single-$15, Double-$20, shown): https://tinyurl.com/9ysrvzxj
Yay for having Fortaleza Blanco (fav sipping tequila)! If you're a Fortaleza fan, you know this is incredibly hard to find in bars and restos.
* Vesper, Grey Goose ($17): https://tinyurl.com/y9cf3n3c
Solid, stiff and smooth. Not too heavy on the vermouth.
* Fernet Neat ($9): https://tinyurl.com/mvxhp2dp
Surprised they carried fernet but glad they did after overindulging.

* Eggs & Prawns (HH-$8): https://tinyurl.com/ynf29w32
Ok but bland; needed more acid for in the deviled eggs.
* Duck Liver Mousse w/ pickles, whole seed mustard, seeded sourdough crostini (HH-$14)
Smooth and light, not as rich in texture (loose) and distinct in taste.
* Ad Astra Seeded Sourdough w/ salted butter ($8): https://tinyurl.com/3jms5amk
Ad Astra is a Seaside microbakery and they make some bomb bread - deliciously crusty and satisfyingly chewy with a nice tang and nuttiness from the seeds.
* Hiramasa Crudo w/ passion fruit vinaigrette, Urfa chili, smoked Big Sur sea salt, scallions ($18): https://tinyurl.com/bdcvn53f
Fresh slices of hamachi but the accompanying vinaigrette/sauce was oddly bland.
* Braised Pork Belly w/ yellow corn pudding, chanterelles, caramelized onion, bordelaise ($22): https://tinyurl.com/5n84urrz
The cut of pork belly was lean and fork tender paired with earthy+fruity chanterelles and slightly sweet creamy corn pudding.
* Duck Confit w/ apple chestnut puree, warren pears, red Belgian endive, sherry shallot vinaigrette ($36): https://tinyurl.com/n4f2kf79
Underwhelming; the duck confit was tender but the skin could have been crispier. The accompaniment was too sweet, almost dessert-like so it needed more vinaigrette for acid.
* 7 oz. Australian Wagyu Bavette Steak w/ lobster mushroom confit, shaved carrots, pickled cauliflower mushrooms, portobello puree, bordelaise ($48): https://tinyurl.com/yzdnuxy5
*** Medium rare by default
The soft and beefy bavette had a good seared crust and was perfectly medium rare. Nailed it.
* Crispy Potatoes w/ brown butter, chives, lemon truffle crema ($14)
Gotta have potatoes with your steak! Since the potatoes varied in size, only the small pieces were crispy.
* Butterscotch Pot de Crème w/ whipped crème anglaise, English toffee, chocolate pretzel, candied pecan ($10): https://tinyurl.com/ye29ysju
While I appreciate the dessert had a good caramel flavor and not overly sweet, there was no custard layer. It was just butterscotch flavored whipped crème anglaise.

Service is refined yet very approachable. Our server, Nico was awesome and there when we needed him. Drink and food service was prompt and well-paced (we're fast eaters).

Modern and charming with rooms converted into cozy indoor dining areas (two levels). There's even a library. Loved the vibe of the outdoor patio with fire pits. Perfect date night place.

Private lot and street parking.
Overall, I think the food has potential to be 5 stars. Great plating but I found the flavors to be restrained/one-note and some of the textures were lacking. Dishes were missing something to make it really noteworthy. But, Stokes Adobe is bringing something new and creative to the area so I get why they're so popular and highly rated. Loved the service and vibe (plus the great liquor selection) so would def visit again when in the area! read more
