We went with friends and family to this restaurant. The duck liver appetizer was very delicious and the bread was good. I ordered roasted chicken for an entree, unfortunately the chicken was a little dry but the Marsala sauce saved it. The main reason I gave this 2 stars was due to the steaks my friends ordered being very small. We had to send one of the steaks back because it was undercooked and the other friend had to send their steak back twice and I think while waiting the second time decided not to eat their entree. It was our first time dining here & we had the most amazing experience thanks to our server Salvador. He is very knowledgeable about the menu, his food & drink recommendations were perfect. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by everyone the host, another server the bartender, everyone we walked by was so welcoming. The food was so delicious, we didn't have room for more or else we probably would've ordered the whole menu. Six of us dined here two days ago on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. We had extremely high expectations because of the reviews and the Michelin guide endorsement. We were not happy with the results. If Stokes Adobe had concentrated on the same quality n their appetizers (Starters) as with their entrees, we would give this restaurant four stars. We had black truffle mushroom tagliatelli (2), scallops with a root hash, duck confit, branzino, and truffle chicken. All were delicious and well-prepared, although the branzino had a tough not crisp skin and the scallops were seared only on one side. [Admittedly, scallops are difficult to sear on both sides but it can be done. My husband does it.] It is the starters which deflated our expectations and disappointed us so terribly. The deviled eggs with crab and caviar (and I make them this way also) were so mayonnaise-y that the miniscule crab must have slipped off the egg white into oblivion (and for $22 for three eggs we expected more texture, crab, and less mayonnaise). The duck liver mousse had so much fat on top that in a dimly lit (but beautiful) room, we couldn't see where the mousse was underneath so ended up eating globules of fat. And the oddest of all the apps was the beet salad: tiny bits of beets on a huge slab of white bread drenched in dressing. We didn't expect a soggy panzanella. We want Stokes to up their game so we'll go back to this historic adobe with so much Monterey history! read more

The ambiance is wonderful on the first floor.....We were on the 2nd floor Waaaamp Waaaamp the 2nd floor is BRIGHT WHITE LIGHTS, and PAINT austere and quite bland, lots of windows so in the daylite it might be better. there was another table of 4 celebrating a birthday upon our seating and they were partying like 1999! LOUD, PROUD & LOTS OF VINO . the entry bar area, & first floor dining rooms are ARTISTICALLY lit, not dark! clearly menu readable lighting, even tho the print on the menus are smaller, we did have someone in our party who needed additional light on the airport runway lit 2nd floor!!! our server was energetic & did check on us frequently however her knowledge of the food menu and bar menu was lacking. she did mention that there was already something off the gnocchi, menu plus added another item not on the menu available for order, short ribs which were ordered and devoured by 2 of our table stating the delishisness of the short ribs with the CREAMY POLENTA was possibly the BEST ever!!! my lasagna was also DEELISHHH featuring a lamb, pork and i think beef tomato sauce and if the noodles were not homemade they sure tasted like it the 4th at our table had the chicken which he had ordered b4 so he knew it would be good!!! i should add the deviled eggs with black caviar we're delightful dessert for our table was 2 orders of the bread pudding with chocolate, cherries and NO RAISINS!!! was a lovely way to end our evening. The only reason I'm giving these guys a 5 is that I can't give them a higher rating than that. Ambiance was ok, but food was next level. Had crispy potatoes and yellowtail crudo for appetizers and they both came with their unique sauces which really made the difference. Had the pork chop, which was top with some breadcrumbs and again had his own unique sauce. Incredible. Finally, had the lemon olive oil cake which, wouldn't you know it, came with its own unique sauce and was one of the better desserts I've had in a long time. We took a table under this gorgeous stately Redwood in a nice patch of sun with heaters available at the ready but not needed on this beautiful Nov day in Monterey. Ordered the tuna tartare, burrata with truffles, and panisse lavash wrap. The tartare was more of a tiny tuna mayo salad and was not up to par. The burrata and lavash were very good. The standouts were the fresh vegetables and greens that were given better than adequate care with flawless dressings. The panisse lavash was crispy, creamy, buttery, and spicy. Our server was very attentive and this place exuded lux yet managed to be warm and unpretentious. Menu changes frequently and at least the vegetables are local. I'd like to see more local seafood and diversity in the menu. We will return for dinner and daily Happy hour!! read more

Lovely historic setting in downtown Monterey. They have a parking lot in the back so there was no hassle parking. We were greeted upon arrival and shown to our booth upstairs. Our server was great - friendly and attentive, but never intrusive. Both of our meals were delicious, although the chef is a bit heavy-handed with the salt IMO. The starter salad we ordered was enough to share. My husband had the fettuccine which was a perfect portion and delicious. I had the chicken which I enjoyed. The absolute best meal we had not only in Monterey, but so far on this west coast trip. Service was amazing (thank you Rachel), the restaurant is beautiful, and the food,...exquisite. Kudos to the chef! We started with the crispy potatoes. They were incredible, deliciously crispy with an amazing lemon truffle crema. The halibut was a great choice and its accompaniments suited the dish to perfection. The pork chop had a panko crust, was a good size, and had a fantastic medley of flavour with its eggplant puree and tomato and olive salad. We also shared the Cavatelli carbonara. I can't even fully describe how insanely delicious this pasta dish was. Where have you been all my life?? We had to resist the urge to not lick that bowl. That dish alone makes the trek from the east coast worth it. Dessert was also incredible. The chocolate budino was chocolatey but not overly rich or sweet, and the lemon olive oil cake was light and citrusy, definitely a hit. Thank you Stokes Adobe for such an unforgettable meal. The building is beautiful and chic. A renovated old home in Monterey. However it is a bit isolated and the restaurant is huge. Strangely enough it was kind of empty but instead of putting us close to other people, they seemed to want to separate everyone and use up the entire restaurant which didn't make it fun. I would recommend insisting on sitting near the bar. The appetizers were great, the sausage pizza and Brussels salad but the chicken was a bit undercooked. Not many choices either. We were in Monterey, to run a half marathon. The restaurant was highly recommended, so we were very excited. We were taken to our table, out on the patio. Then the waiter came, he was so unfriendly, we were shocked. He took our drink order, which was $100 bottle of sparking rose. He came back with regular champagne, not sparkling rose. There was no color to the bottle, nor the liquid that came out of that bottle. When we questioned if this was sparkling rose, he went on a 10 min lecture about how it was rose, because the bottle had 2 grapes of rose, and the color did NOT matter, even though it looked like not rose, it was in fact rose. WHAT????? After giving us a lecture about it, and tried to convince us that not rose was rose, he left and did NOT come back for at least an hour. Did I mention he plop down the $100 bottle, in the middle of the table, WITHOUT an ice bucket??? Is that a new common practice in restaurants? When he brought our appetizers, he did so without share plates. That made us, huddle over the appetizers, dribble sauce all over the table. He did not come back at least for another hour, abandoned, dismissed, and gas lighted. By the time he came back, we had lost our appetite, and just wanted to leave. What I'm having trouble with is, how does one person work in a service industry without understanding the very basics of service? Why would any waiter ever think that it is appropriate to lecture customers that non-rose is rose, and that we are just ignorant?? How about not bringing basic items to us, and NOT taking order for dinner?? Isn't that what waiters are suppose to do? Take order for dinner? We were appalled, insulted that we were treated in such a disrespectful manner by a wait staff. read more

We've been visiting Monterey for five years in a row now and our number one mistake was not eating at Stokes Adobe until this year. The food was all phenomenal and flavorful. My steak was perfectly cooked. I usually write off Australian Wagyu but I was able to bite through theirs like butter. Their drinks are also amazing. Hands down the best whiskey sour I've had. We go to Monterey several weekends a year to get away and this is our new favorite restaurant by far. I love that they updated this beautiful adobe building but still maintained the integrity and charm of the building. The interior was lovely but we chose to dine in courtyard next to the firepits since we had our small dog with us. Everyone was attentive and friendly. The cocktails were fun and tasty, we had a Hattie's Old Fashioned and a Whiskey Sour. For dinner, we had the Truffle Chicken and Duck Confit and both were amazing. The Butterscotch pot de creme for dessert was delicious too. I am looking forward to returning next time we are in town. read more

The food was very good but a little hit and miss for the price. Desert was a particular disappointment. Our chief complaint with this venue is that the dining room which was at full to capacity, was excruciatingly LOUD! If your expecting an intimate, romantic dining experience, that's probably not going to happen. Although a charming venue, unfortunately, the hardwood flooring and low ceiling amplify noise to an almost unbearable level that totally contradicts the soft, candle, lit photos of a romantic setting on the website. read more

I was so excited to have snagged a reservation here during one of our frequent trips to the Monterey Bay area. I have to say that this visit was not worthy of a five star review like the many five star reviews that blanket Stokes Adobe's page. We arrived for our reservation on time, at 7:15pm. The hostess seemed very confused about how to actually seat us or even acknowledge our reservation. This was definitely not an issue, but it was a good indicator of what was to come. We were eventually seated right around 7:20. A person that I'll assume was a waiter came by our table 20 minutes after we'd been seated and didn't even introduce himself, short of saying (literally) "I'll be right back". Alas, that was the last we saw of him for the evening. Another 20 minutes goes by...at this point we had been seated for 40 minutes without any service. Someone approached our table and asked if we had seen a water, I said no, but we had seen someone 20 minutes before that aaid they'd be right back and promptly disappeared. That person informed us he needed to "get some paper" and he'd be back. 10 minutes later (we had now gone 50 minutes without acknowledgement from a waiter) the person returned with his paper and apologized for our non existent waiter. He advised that he typically didn't take orders but he was making an exception for us. Thanks for the favor buddy, after 50 minutes without any service you'd think that they'd have more empathy. The rando person wrote our drink orders on his paper and disappeared. We sat for another 15 minutes with no interaction with any waiter (we had now been seated for AN HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES and decided we'd better go somewhere with waiters if we wanted to ever eat. At that moment someone actually came to our table with drinks! Unfortunately they weren't our drinks. After an hour and 20 minute's of literally no meaningful interaction with waitstaff and ZERO service (not even the drinks we ordered) we decided to bail and cut our losses. In summary, we sat waiting for over an hour with no service at all. I've never had worse service ever. This place really needs to start focusing on it's customers. If you're short staffed because of Covid, don't fill every seat in the house. It was my birthday dinner and this place let me and my husband down hard. What a bummer. read more
