PRICEY and TERRIBLE SERVICE! I would give them no stars if I could. It was a terrible experience. I saw yarn that I thought I needed for my project, so I bought the yarn which was extremely over priced from them ($23 each). The lady then asked me if I wanted my yarn wound and I said yes, what she never told me was that I could not return the yarn if she wound it for me. Such an evil tactic to look like you are helping customers without telling them the whole truth. When I came home, I realized needed to swap it out for different yarn and she wouldn't let me return the yarn or swap it out, just because she had wound the yarn for me. WORST experience ever! This is a fantastic neighborhood sewing shop. The staff is friendly and always willing to help. I love that they have sewing classes. It isn't a very large store, but the yarn supplies are really nice and they have a wide variety of fabrics and sewing accessories. read more

I really like this place. As far as I know this is the only fabric store like this in Capital Hill. There used to be one,but they closed down so it was nice to discover this lovely place. The staff was really nice letting us have our meeting here and they also offer classes,which I'm looking forward to attending. This is without question my favorite knitting store. They do focus on other crafting needs, too, but I'm almost always there for knitting. the staff is very helpful, everything is well organized, and they have classes there as well, from what I understand. Such an awesome store. Extremely helpful and friendly staff, reasonable prices for the quality of materials, and one of the most hip selections of fabrics and notions in Seattle. Other fabric stores seem to be behind trends in print and color, but Stitches always has something special that doesn't look like it came from your grandmother's sewing basket (as wonderful and nostalgic as that can be sometimes). This is a great little store. Fewer choices in fabrics, but the ones they have are way cuter than most that you find in bigger stores. Basically, less selection but better quality as a whole. Has just about everything you need in terms of supplies. Plus their classes are really fun and informative. I only took one class, and then my next project was a sonic the hedgehog costume which turned out great! You wouldn't know it was my first project on my own. I have made several other items since then. That class helped me get over my fear of creating things. read more

Oh wow how on earth had I not been in this place before?! Its situated right in between some of my fave cap hill stores/restaurants and its not like they don't have plenty of eye candy in their window as temptation. I went in today looking to get about 5 yards of ribbon to lace my new corset and was pleasantly helped by this lovely woman who I can only assume owns the place or has worked there for years. The selection was FABULOUS!!!! Oil cloth galore, buttons a bounty, fabric so fine, trimmings to boot and all the accessories a girl could dream of. Not to mention some yarn and knitting supplies as well as a small work area in the back. Honestly I wish I did more needle crafts just so I could purchase large amounts of fuzzy fabric and printed pieces but I suppose I have enough deniro consuming addictions as is. read more

The only crafting I come in here for and thus the only bit I can comment on is sewing, so this will be a fabric/sewing focused review. Sorry, knitters & class-goers -- I will be of no use to you. The Good: There are a lot of things to love about Stitches, honestly. The location on Capitol Hill is great - a calm section of Pike within spitting distance of all of your sandwich (Honey Hole) and adult store (Babeland) needs! As many other reviewers have mentioned, they have a great selection of unique and really eye-catching fabrics. A lot of stores carry a large amount of "cartoony" fabrics that look, well, dumb. Stitches does a great job of paring down this selection to feature a great lineup of fun and actually usable fabrics. Along with that, I'm a little bit of a lot in love with their button selection. The employees are incredibly friendly, always willing to pipe in or provide assistance when you need it. The layout is user-friendly, too, I'd say. It's a small place, so it's a lot less overwhelming than the larger stores. The good side of this is that you can go in with an idea for a project, walk around and find what you need without feeling totally lost or get sidetracked and buy a ton of crap that you don't need. The Less Than Good: Fabric prices. Phew. I stopped in here and bought my "dream fabric" before I visited on a whim some other larger stores. The price I paid at Stitches was almost if not solidly double the price per yard than it was at the larger store. Here I was thinking that the price of the fabric at Stitches meant it was some unique stock of fabric, but I've seen it repeatedly at other larger stores for significantly less. I would say that in and of itself hurts, but isn't necessarily a deal breaker as I enjoy getting to support a local business. The only other complaint I have is minor and is in direct correlation to the size of the shop - they don't have a great pattern selection. I'd be hard-pressed to say that you wouldn't be able to find something -similar- to a pattern you were looking for at Stithces, it's just their selection, while limited, is to scale and appropriate for the size of their business. To sum up, I'd say the convenience of having a fabric shop on the hill is an all-around win for me. The customer service is great, too, which means a lot to me. I really like this place and will continue shopping here, I may just focus on the on-sale or clearance fabrics to resolve my only minor tiffs with this place. read more

I love going to Stitches. I've been going for so many years, and I always find about twice as much as I was looking for (especially when I wasn't looking for anything, and the fabric of the week in the window beckoned me in, you need to quit that!). They are small, but the selection is really good for the size, and they always seem to have that little notion, or just something I need to finish a project. I also love all the imported Japanese fabrics that I can't find anywhere else. I learned to knit taking a class here, and one of the things that stood out for me was that the instructor was really invested in the idea that we learn, not just teaching a class. He even offered us a meeting time outside of class, when he'd just be knitting someplace, and we could come and just knit with him. The only negative I can think of is that staff has been a little uneven through the years, but that's been minor. I too, thought it would be more unique in terms of fabric than it was, especially since the window makes it look so promising. Now, it isn't terrible at all and I do really appreciate the totally affordable beginning sewing classes they have - I'm going to learn to make pajama pants! They do have some unique fabrics but the selections isn't as good as the bigger stores. What makes the place great is the emphasis on the PEOPLE who actually buy their products. They offer tables and chairs to work at in their store and get-toethers for sewers and a couch and you can even use their sewing machines. It's way more customer-centric than the big chain stores and that is its unique selling approach. I liked the place. read more

Fantastic shop! It's little, but packed to the gills with great stuff: everything from funky quilting cottons to high quality wool for coats/jackets. Fab selection of notions, too. The staff is attentive without being in your face. Their book selection makes up for the limited number of patterns. I was expecting more boutique patterns, not just Kwik Sew, but that's OK. (Most of us own way too many patterns anyway!) Don't go in expecting JoAnn quality and prices. It's not a cheap shop, but their prices are more than fair for what you get. read more

It's fantastic to have a small fabric store in my neighborhood, very convenient for last minute costumes or spur of the moment craft projects. Fabric prices are very high (though seemingly high quality), I generally try to stick to purchasing ribbon, notions, embroidery floss, and other small items. Help is somewhat hit-or-miss, there are a few ladies who are very friendly, and a few that hardly say a word to you. Still overall probably friendlier than the ladies at Joann's. All things considered, I'm thankful not to have to drive all the way to SODO or Ballard to pick up sewing essentials! read more

I really liked walking into Stiches. I came there to find embroidery thread and found a tall spinning rack of of hundreds of colors. I had a project I want to finish that I found at a garage sale and the embroidery thread colors didn't exactly match what they had so I'll try Britex in San Fran next time I'm there but I really liked this cute little shop. read more

I love this place! The ladies working here are super nice and helpful. I do embroidery and crochet and found almost everything I need for my projects. They have an impressive button selection, embroidery floss in every imaginable color along with all other embroidery supplies I could want (even my favorite indie pattern designer Sublime Stitching). About the yarn selection: I've never seen the yarn brands they carry here before, but they are all very high quality and therefore pricier than your average craft store. The baby alpaca and peruvian merino wools will definitely cost you a pretty penny. I love the Cascade brand they have that is a nylon/acrylic blend; it is SO soft (runs about $5.98/skein). They don't always have the colors I need nor the larger size crochet hooks, but they do roll the yarns for you on their super cool wood winder, which is fun. Overall it is totally worth it to me to pay a bit more for supplies because 1)support local business 2) have better quality materials 3)get better service and 4) to not have to drive further away to chain craft store. When I have a little more time I plan to try one of their sewing classes to learn how to use a machine! Check them out for your next project. read more

Every time I go here, the staff is always nice and cheerful! They always have amazing ideas and tips and are genuinely excited about my projects! They have a great selection and will order more if you need it! They also have quite a few options for those trying to save money. This store is really great, my only request is that they look into carrying cheaper old fabric or a bucket of old cheap buttons. Something for the super bargain hunters! read more

I came in here today to look at some yarn and get some information on what would be best to loom with, I met Kelly and was SO impressed with her knowledge and friendliness, she gave me a ton of helpful information and advice and even made some suggestions that inspired me to get creative. I didn't purchase anything but I will absolutely be back! There is also a great selection of buttons, fabrics, trim, and so on, more of a selection than I had expected. I was also given a tip to shop on the the 31st of this month for 20% off in celebration of their 10 year anniversary. Went in to pick up some yarn for an impromptu desire to knit a scarf one misty weekend. Left without the yarn and no desire to return. The store is more geared towards sewing and not so much for knitting or crocheting. The prices seemed a bit high compared to other yarn stores I have been to. Really disappointing. I am used to a very nice european fabric stores. This store has small selection of fabrics. It has 2 rayons, 20 kinds of wool, probably 8-10 linen and cotton selection, few stretch fabrics, some synthetics, 5 kinds of Japanese silks. And a lot of cotton. There is really nothing to choose from. Yes, it is better than Joann. Well, still, what do you choose fro here? The knitting selection is much better than the fabrics. I was in the store alone, 2 sales people talk to each other, didn't even say hi. 10 minutes later the man shout if i need help ask him. I would not go again, no would I recommend this place. read more

My review is based on knitting only. (I don't sew/quilt, so I have no opinion about that part of the store.) The yarn selection was pretty limited with only Cascade brand yarns. Some are really nice, though. Fair prices. I liked that they had a bunch if swatches, but you don't always know which yarn they used...you have to search or out rather than it being labelled or near the same yarn. read more

There are a lot of interesting fabrics here, and the classes are very fun. The notions section is a bit limited, as is the yarn, but it's a quaint place. I would rather go to JoAnn's because I have an employee discount and the wider selection, but if I have to go find something right away and don't want a half hour bus ride, I'll walk over to Stitches to get it. I have had an experience with a rather rude employee while I was talking to a friend to get advice on a fabric to purchase, and that sort of put me off, but I will shop here again if I find something I really want or need. read more

I'm really disappointed with my shopping experience today. We found this little store on a family outing and as I was looking at some yarns, I guess by the sounds of the shop person's reaction, my son had made a mess. I immediately stopped what I was doing and saw that he had grabbed 2 of the cross stitch rings and placed them on the floor. She had made such a big deal about how she had to clean his mess up, I assumed he knocked down all the buttons. My son has autism and doesn't always have proper store etiquette so I am always quick to apologize and clean up if he has done something... but to my confusion, it was just a few hoops and took us no longer than 2 seconds to pick it back up. She rudely replied thank you and I kindly turned around to tell her we were sorry for the inconvenience and that my son had autism and didn't mean to what he did. She did apologize but we will not be back....UGH I really wanted that yarn too... read more

Stitches is great, it's the only fabric store in the broadway area, because of this their prices are a little high, but they are super close to me. Selection isn't huge, this isn't Joann's but it's a great little store with friendly knowledgeable staff. They have a good selection of cutesy cotton plainweaves and some nice organic fabrics spread throughout the store as well as a decent selection of Cascade yarns. Also if you're in the Seattle Central School of Apparel Design and Development you get a 10% discount. read more

I like Stitches for a few reasons. The staff has always been really friendly every time I've gone in - almost to the point of eager to help me (but not annoyingly so). The sewing class I took there was great; I got a lot of personal instruction and the price was perfect for someone who wasn't sure whether sewing would be their thing. I'm not crazy about their yarn selection, but for such a small space they do have a pretty good variety of fabrics. read more
