The shop is ridiculously cute. The selection of yarn is good and the staff are very nice and ask you all sorts of questions to make sure your needs are met. I mentioned I was going to start knitting again and the clerk offered to help me with my stitches if I just came in with my yarn and and needles over the weekend. Also, I love how they will prepare your yarn for you. When you are someone whose only yarn buying experience is at JoAnns or Michael's (ahem, me), having your yarn set for you from a helpful employee is a total treat! I was enamored with their contraption and watched my skein go from wrapped up to knitting ready. The prices are a bit higher and the selection is smaller too but like I said. It's a small, cute, local store! You can buy Sublime Stitching kits here! You can't buy those kits at a chain store! I really like this place! its tiny, and they don't have a huge selection, but the stuff they do have is pretty great. Surprisingly im able to come here and get everything i am looking for/need. I've personally only come in here to get last-minute knitting supplies, and, on that end, Stitches isn't great. They carry a wide range of needle sizes, but only in bamboo, and they don't have much in the way of yarn. The store is great to stop into if you desperately need a needle size and don't have time to go elsewhere, as I often did when I lived on Capitol Hill. I have taken a look at Stitches' fabric selection, and it's far superior to most fabric stores in my opinion. It's a small store, so they don't carry much, but they have so many fun, cool fabrics, it makes me wish I had more time to sew. If you're looking for something specific, you might want to call ahead to make sure they have it, because, like I said, small stores often equal fewer items in stock. read more

Yes Stitches isn't as cheap as JoAnn's but I'd much rather support an independent sewing store with nice staff. Their Japanese fabric selection is always on point so I'm always looking for a reason to pop in. Routinely I'll pull out a Chinook book coupon since they don't often have a sale. The remnant section by the register always gives me the opportunity to try a new fabric without breaking the bank. The classes are small (max 4 people) and held off site but nearby. It allows the instructor to focus on students and the project at hand. The instructor for the beginning bag class was just ok, but the other instructor for the skirt class rocks. read more

A friend of mine wanted me to teach her how to knit and I love knitting and wanted to get back into it so we went here today and got our supplies. I also wanted to learn how to crochet, so I got stuff for that as well plus a handy booklet on how to crochet. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they have so many beautiful fabrics, it got me all excited to get myself a sewing machine and start making my own stuff again. They have sewing machines you can rent there for a very low hourly price and they also have sewing classes, which I will definitely take! So glad I found them! read more

Oh man, I can't believe I hadn't reviewed this place until now - Stitches is amazing, your perfect local fabric store. The employees are super, super nice and helpful. Daniel and Lisa in particular have given me outstanding advice on a variety of costuming and home decor projects (e.g., Princess Aura armor - use heavy-weight fusible interfacing with gold fabric!; Rei Ayanami schoolgirl outfit - make sure to dart apron straps so they lie flat across my shoulders!; Flame Princess wig - use felting wool and tack it onto a frame!). I am seriously so impressed by the depth and breadth of their knowledge, and their willingness to provide personalized feedback - honestly they could charge for those consultations! It's always nice to shop local, but sometimes it's hard to find exactly what you need in small, independent stores - not so here, it is easy to find just what you need. The fabric selection is lovely and they frequently add new and beautiful prints, such as the Japanese fabric line Kokka - awesome! They also sell a wide selection of yarns, buttons, felt, ribbon, zippers, thread, sewing tools, etc, etc. Can't recommend it highly enough! read more

I LOVE this local little shop. I've been wanting to learn how to sew for a long time, and a friend recommended this place to me for fabrics and sewing classes. I just finished the "Beginning Sewing: Bag" class and I feel completely confident to take on some projects on my own, and am no longer afraid of my new sewing machine. Mark, who taught this class, knows his stuff and keeps things moving at a good pace. I immediately signed up for the "Beginning Sewing: Pants" class and after that, plan on doing the alterations class. Everyone that works there is very friendly and SUPER helpful - they were all quick to help me choose fabrics or recommend one type of tool over another. They have GORGEOUS, super cool fabrics - I want to make a million things just to use all the fabrics I love. (There's one with space invaders that I have to use for my son's room.) read more

Stitches has been my go-to fabric store since the pandemic. I've been making masks like a mad woman, and their fabrics are luscious, beautiful and bring smiles and joy during this difficult time (I've become a fat quarters addict ; ). The notions selection is wonderful. I've also bought fabrics (especially love the linen and chambray) for personal clothing and it's all high quality. My online orders are fulfilled promptly. Stitches is a cute little fabric store. They sell alot of unique fabrics and accessories. Although, the prices for fabric are steep, the quality is really good and the selection is way better than most run of the mill fabric stores. I like going here to get odds and ends for projects..they sell alot of cool ribbons, buttons, clasps, etc. that you cant really find anywhere else but online. And the staff are always nice and helpful. I would have given them 5 stars. I gave them 4 because the prices of fabric is kinda ridiculous. Seems small from the outside, but the fabric selection is awesome, yarn selection (though that's not what I was there for) looked great, and there were just enough notions and accessories to keep me from having to go to a bigger craft store, unless I were to embark on a huge project. I LOVE STITCHES! I leap out of bed on the days I know I'm going to this store. Kelly and Janie are always so wonderful and Amy is the coolest lady ever! I went to Joann's today to look and the cashier was so rude I couldn't belive it. So I left and went to stitches and kelly was there! I called ahead and she put my item on hold and was so warm and welcoming when I walked in. Not only do I prefer spending my money at local businesses I prefer spending my money places where people take pride in what they do and make me feel valued no matter what my annoying questions as a customer may be. What a neat store! They sell a fair bit of everything for needlecrafters: sewing patterns, fabric (and stuff you can't often find at the big box stores), notions, yarn, embroidery supplies, and even some books. And the coolest part is that they let you use workspace in the back at no charge (bring your own supplies please, except the sewing machines) as long as there is no class in session. I definitely plan to come to this store more often for the space AND for supplies for my projects worked on in said space, since the prices are decent and I definitely want to support this business. read more

I love this store. I love it for the great fabrics, the helpful staff and the awesome selection of notions. Oh and they have a fabulous rainbow of felt. I just finished an excellent class with Danial learning how to sew knits. I've sewn for years but have never been able to conquer knits. Danial is a great instructor. He is very thorough, great at explaining and very patient. Stitches has some beautiful, fun fabrics, and their prices are on par with what you'd pay at other stores and on the internet. However, they are such a small store that their selection is limited...just a few fabrics from each line. So if you want something really specific, this might not be the place to find it. Their yarn selection is extremely limited -- mostly just cascade as I recall. And they don't have Addi Turbos! I always buy Addi Turbos and think they're very popular with other knitters, so I was surprised and disappointed not to find them at Stitches. I have always found the service to be pretty lacking...the employees do a lot of ignoring customers, and when I've tried to ask questions about the fabric and get some input on what's suitable for specific patterns, I found the staff to be useless. I enjoyed having this store in the neighborhood for last minute things like thread and buttons, but I never bought much in the way of fabric there, and no yarn or knitting supplies at all. It's too bad...it would have been great to have a real knitting store nearby! read more

After a disappointing first sewing lesson at a less established West Seattle sewing haunt I decided to have another go and check out the newbie pajama pant class at Stitches. After all, I had this brand new machine staring at me every day and it wasn't going to magically start popping out swanky duds without a little effort on my part. For the same $40-ish bucks as I spent for my first sewing misadventure I got twice the class hours, a teacher with an actual lesson plan, and I walked out with a real pair of pj pants...made by me, really, by me, and they even look and act like real pajamas. The teacher, Jamie, was outstanding and had been teaching the class long enough to time the bits just so. I never once felt rushed and the class had perfect cadence. She was very hands on but never jumped in and did the work FOR you. Even when you made a mess of your waistband. Unfortunately for you, Jamie had decided to go to fashion school in Chicago and my pj class was to be her last at Stitches. So while she most certainly deserves this fab review with the changing of the guard I can't say for sure what experience you'd have now. I'll surely be going back for the skirt class though, so look for an update on the new teacher. read more

I love local businesses. I love independently-owned businesses. I go out of my way to support them. I took a 30 minute bus ride + a 2 mile walk so that I could go to Stitches. I'm so sad to report that it was a huge waste of time. I asked about a book that they carried. I was told they had sold out and had none. I asked if I could order a copy. They said the book I requested didn't exist. I politely asked if they could just check on it. It does exist. They said they weren't going to be ordering again until Monday (5 days away -- I would not have minded waiting). I again asked if I could order a copy. They said, "They have this sort of thing at Barnes & Noble. Try there." I got such a negative attitude from the woman working there, I felt like I should have apologized for bothering her. The fabrics at Stitches are so so pretty, but it's not worth being treated like crap. read more

They carry some items you can find nearly everywhere, but I always find something unusual and funky that I can't do without. Their selection of notions is pretty thorough for a shop this size. This is a great little knitting and fabric store on Capitol Hill that has really set me up for success in my first knitting project. The woman I spoke to even gave me a business card with a link to online videos to refer to when I got home. She made sure I had the correct yarn, right needles and another customer even came up and joined the conversation. I like Stitches because it is adorable. I'm more of a knitter than a sewer, and while they have a great selection of Cascade Wools especially, I don't buy much yarn here. i have very mixed feelings about this place. first of all, they have really LOVELY fabric and yarns. very pretty not-so-average things. which actually says a lot. it's a little pricey. the reason for the low stars is based on my experience of the staff. i was appalled at the horrible service i received. in fact, i haven't been back to this store in over a year because of the man that "helped" me in the shop last. he literally lectured me in front of my friend about HE knew how to make pompoms without a fancy plastic thing and how silly and stupid i was for wanting one. it was ridiculous. neither of us have returned since that. i'm sure there are other employees who are wonderful, and maybe i should give it another chance, but based on my last experience, i don't necessarily recommend it. read more
