Really sub-mediocre food, even for a strip mall Chinese take-out place. The quality was very reminiscent of a college cafeteria's Chinese food. Not even quite up to typical shopping mall food court level. There wasn't any sign of wok usage in the food -- it seemed to be mostly deep fryer and maybe a rice pot. The rice was barely better than (or different from) airplane rice (on a nice airline, at least). There was a vague chemical-ish taste to some things -- not in a very bad or dangerous way, just some very subpar unnatural ingredients that are exposed. The food was nice and hot, and I didn't get sick, so that low bar was easily cleared. Also, the person at the counter was friendly in a business-like manner -- the comments about poor/unfriendly service are clearly balderdash. But, the food could really be improved. I can't imagine it's the best Chinese food in Mebane (not counting the handful of Chinese-ish dishes at the non-Chinese Asian Harbor, which is excellent), but maybe it somehow is. If given no other options, sure, I guess I'd eat there again, but it's not ideal. read more

Horrible. Hot and sour soup with no heat. Crab Rangoon flat. Mongolian beef tasted like they poured the soup over it - one big puddle of brown. The beef was so fatty. We got a large soup, appetizer, one entree and it was almost $50. I could go,to a decent restaurant and get a meal. Will never go back. read more

we usually stay put on just a couple things to order from here, one is the coconut shrimp which just seemed off/different. The Qt sized shrimp and noodles with stir fry veggies was alright and the fried veggie and shrimp rolls were of good quality. The prices always seem to go up between our orders, we keep our receipts from prior times. Service was ok, i mean its takeout you know. There really is no ambiance there to speak of. There was a time, probably before the pandemic hit in 2020 when we would always get our Chinese food from Stir King but several times since then we have been disappointed with the quality of the food. Today I ordered the Crab Rangoon and paid over $6.00 for 6 pieces. It was basically fried dough. I used to stop here on my way back in to town and it was always a hole in the wall eatery that had good food. The eggrolls were my favorite and I always got shrimp fried rice. Ok so TODAY, I walk up to the joint and I thought it was closed but the "Open" light was on. I go in and was in shock for how bad this place looks now. It was never nice but really shocked to see the decline in its appearance. I ordered eggrolls and shrimp fried rice as usual. The food is different too. Eggrolls still had the good stuff on the inside but they were so greasy like maybe they had already been fried and set aside and then put back in the hot grease to warm them up??? The shrimp fried rice was good. I love how they put so many vegetables in it. It has onions, peas, carrots, mushrooms, celery, zucchini, egg and shrimp. Unfortunately, the shrimp they are using now are not as good as they used to be. It was missing a char taste that you get from a well seasoned wok. Like how they used to taste. I'm so disappointed. I probably wont go back. Please clean up the place and serve fresh eggrolls again. read more

We used to get Chinese from another spot but decided to try something new. NOPE...we made a mistake. I ordered chicken and broccoli, chicken lomein and won-ton soup, and everything was questionable. There are very few Chinese restaurants in Mebane. Spur of the moment I decided to give Stir King a try. The Coconut Shrimp was just terrible. For $16 I got what tasted like condensed milk and mustard with breaded shrimp and raw un toasted coconut. Awful. read more

Stir King exceeded our expectations for a small Chinese restaurant that does mostly take out business. I had the General Tso's Chicken and it was delicious. Tender and just the right amount of spiciness. The rice was good, the egg roll okay. One of my dinner companions had the Sesame Chicken and said that it was really good. She liked the rice and egg roll even better than I did. Another diner had the Sweet and Sour and she said it was fine, but after trying our companion's Sesame Chicken, she like the Sesame Chicken better. She liked the rice as egg rolls, too. The worst customer service I have ever had at a Chinese takeout joint. That's kind of impressive! Stopped here on the way back from visiting the family during the holidays for a quick bite to eat. While waiting to take my order the cashier decided to walk off to wipe down some tables. After he came back I decided on the shrimp and broccoli before he could walk off and attend to some other chores and went to wait at a table. The food was brought to the table which was nice. But they gave me chicken and broccoli which I went to the cashier guy and pointed out. You would have thought I had told him I was going to kill his first born son or something! He quickly said he'd repeated chicken to me and I'd said yes. While I doubt this I didn't feel like getting in an argument so I said whatever. Please don't treat your customers so poorly here. Stir King is the best Chinese place in Mebane. It's in the strip mall adjacent to Lowes Foods. We tend to place take-out orders but they have several tables as well. Their prices have gone up over the years but there's no place better in town. The food is simply delicious. On weekdays they have a small buffet, my only complaint is that it is available on weekends and is only for a short while during weekdays. I've gone in before hoping for the buffet and it's been closed. If you order a certain amount (35-40?) they give you a free order of those sugar dessert rolls that are so delicious. read more

I just moved to mebane from Colorado and have a hard time finding good authentic asian cuisine. Very good chinese. I got the Lo mein and it was really good. Not the best ive ever had but tasted very authentic. I also ordered kung pow chiken. They put peanuts on it which i dont really prefer...but no biggy. The chicken wasnt spicy at all but had good flavor. I ordered take out, upon arrival they had our food ready but did not let us know it was ready....except through email which is kind of inefficient.Walking in it was a very small establishment, with some seating options. The Stir King hides a little known fact - that it won an award for being one of the Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in the US! I once noticed a plaque and a picture on the countertop of the chef/owner accepting his award in 2008 (?) in New York City. Their food is made with very fresh ingredients, perfectly flavored spices, and worth mentioning again - fresh ingredients. They're hiding in a strip mall that rests between Mebane Oaks Rd. and Highway 119, and though their exterior/interior may deceptively scream, "Generic Greasy Spoon", their service is so friendly and the food modestly whispers "A Cut Above the Rest". We've had take-out from Stir King about 4 times now after having moved to NC last spring. I usually stay away from Chinese take-out and prefer Thai or Vietnamese. But the pickins are a little slim here in Mebane. Stir King was a pleasant surprise. My wife and I usually refer to Chinese take-out as "sticky brown" since that is what you usually find - dry, sticky, and brown. Absolutely horrible experience! My friends & I came in about 30 minutes before closing & told we could not eat inside after a very long drive. This is after we received our food. The cashier actually said you will stay all night or something to that effect. So, we were stuck eating in the car. I just wanted to get out somewhere & stretch my legs for a few minutes but no. We love this place for a once-a-week stir fry at a moderate price. Take out servings are so generous that I get 2-3 meals out of my modest $8.25 dinner, and I don't even eat the rice! Everything is very fresh and hot. I get the sauce on the side and the leftovers are just like freshly made if they haven't sat in the sauce overnight. Quick friendly service, too. I rated it at five stars, comparing it to other quick American-style Chinese take out restaurants in our rural area. Visited this establishment this evening and purchased $35 worth only to return home and to find half of a fly in the beef fried rice as I was eating my meal. Obviously disturbed and sick to my stomach I spent the next 30 minutes throwing up. My boyfriend try to get our money back only to be told that we were making it up. Even after he brought the food and showed them the pictures we had taken. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!! Excellent food, being a local I have eaten there many times without a single issue. As some people have noted this is Americanized Chinese food, but I don't know why this is some sort of a surprise to people. If you want more authentic Asian cuisine, though not Chinese, there is Sake Japanese Steak house right there. All of the local Chinese places are Americanized, however at here and China King if you ask politely they often have a side menu for more authentic dishes that are not considered palatable to most Americans so they simply leave them off the menu. Not sure if either still do that, but they did, it was basically a side menu written entirely in Chinese and was below the counter. Be aware that if you can't properly order Chinese dishes without them having to explain every word and meaning, that is exactly why the menu isn't public. Back to the review itself, virtually everything here is good and they actually won an award for being one of the top 100 American-Chinese restaurants in the US. Was off work last week on vacation and stopped in for lunch. Buffet was what was offered and it was ok. Might have been 8-10 items on it all together. Egg rolls were good. Chicken dishes were not impressive. The broccoli was limp and without flavor at all rubbery. For 4.95 its better than fast food, but certainly not something to initially drive over for at lunch. When my mom got her second serving she found a hair in her food. When we brought it to one of the workers attention she ran and got the owners, and then they shocked me with their ignorant response... "That isn't Chinese hair. It's ya'll hair." Let me put things into perspective for you readers. I am black and nicaraguan, my hair is naturally curly, is sister is black and mexican, and my mother is black. If they wanted to get technical they would've realized it wasn't even the same texture are my mothers hair, and it was straight. My sister and I had our hair curly today. Now my mother wasn't look for a refund, but she wanted to make sure they were aware and took the proper cautions such as taking the dish up it was in and make a new one for the other buffet eaters. My mom being a business owner was only looking for a I'm sorry you found that in your hair. I had no idea that this would've turned into a situation where we were accused of being a liar and a discussion about hair texture. They were my favorite Chinese place around. Not anymore. This place wasn't terrible but it sure wasn't good. The guy on the phone hung up before I knew if he had even heard my order. When I picked up the food the staff was friendly enough. The food itself was lacking. I ordered the General Tsos chicken combo platter which was supposed to come with fried rice and an egg roll (it did). The chicken itself was ok, the breading on the chicken was a little "soft". I mean it didn't really stay on the chicken and mushed. The flavor of the sauce was ok but not great, it was supposed to be a little spicy and was actually way to sweet. The rice was bad, bland and plain.
