Wow. This place is AMAZING! The food is authentic as it comes! Wonderful service and for a small restaurant it was very quiet. I'll definitely be back! It's worth driving to if you want authentic Honduran food!

Pupusas!!!

Hidden gem! Samantha's Pupusas was affordable and absolutely delicious. Of the six pupusas we tried, my favorites were the garlic and chicharrón, and I was especially excited to try the loroco flower filling for the first time. They also offer huitlacoche options for a lot of their other food offerings, I can't wait to return to try. Service was friendly and efficient. It's a small, simple spot with only a few tables, but everything you need for enjoying a great bite of freshly made Salvadoran food!

3 Papusas

I thought it was good but maybe not as phenomenal as some of the reviews. I had a combination of three papusas and all of them were nice but maybe not the best ever. In particular, I like a little more char/burnt cheese on them. The fillings again were nice and they had a great variety.

This place is amazing! The food is incredible, with delicious flavors and a cozy, homemade feel. The service is fantastic, and the tacos are fresh and easy to eat. The homemade fries are top-notch, Salvadoran style, and the corn on the cob is a great addition. Was able to eat here for breakfast. Fresh avocado made this meal a treat. Service was exceptional.

Such a happy find on our journey out to the country today! We stumbled upon Samantha's Pupusas while getting gas nearby. Inside is small but there is some seating for 3 groups of 4 plus two larger tables for 8 plus a lot of outdoor seating, in nicer weather. The workers were kind and the location clean; it has a recent sanitation rating of 100! We ordered several things to get the full experience: empanadas Salvadoreñas de leche o de Frijoles, Tacos (2 chicken and 1 asada), chicken tamale, and Papusas (1-spinach, 1-chicken, chorizo, and cheese, 1-cheese) and it came with salvadorian cole slaw! We had so much food and EVERY BITE was as good as the last. If dessert is what you want they also have a bakery full of some delicious looking items and even do special orders per the menu!

Excellent food. The pupusas are delicious although they are on the small side. I felt that $4 each for their size was a little steep. However I will always support a small business. They have a huge variety of desserts! So much to choose from. I tried the oatmeal chocolate chip peanut butter cookie and it was so good! I wasn't crazy about the regular chocolate chip -!; the brown sugar cookie was delicious but they sprinkle (or pour) white sugar over each cookie and it isn't necessary. We tried a blueberry scone and it was soft and had great blueberry distribution Very clean and the rating shows it! Come check them out!

Delicious food! While visiting Hillsborough we stopped by for lunch. We ordered inside and they brought our food outside for us. They have a number of tables outside with umbrellas. It's next to a busy road so beware it's very loud. Lots of trucks and motorcycles drove by while we were there. The food was great and very affordable. I had a veggie burrito. I liked how it came with pico and two sauces. The red was was very hot but I really liked it! My husband had Pupusas. He had 3 and was able to pick different ones - Camaron, chorizo chicken and cheese, and Loroco. His favorites were the Camaron and Chorizo ones. Masks are not required and I did not see any staff with masks on. Definitely try this spot if you are in the area!!

I'm always a bit skeptical when I arrive at a place based solely on the reviews, because the internet told me it was good, knowing nothing about it. This little Salvadoran hole in the wall is next to a gas station in middle of nowhere, NC was one I wasn't sure would truly be worth a stop. Even though I ate my pupusas later, reheated, I must say I couldn't have asked for more flavor. The menu has a variety of options including beans and loroco (a little flower bud). The pupusas do all come with cheese, so perhaps not the best place for the dairy free crowd. Other menu options had items like squash flower and huitlachoche (look it up). In addition, a mouthwatering cake display was there for the wait. But I was there for pupusas, and they offered a grilled corn edge, along with salty cheese and some impressive condiments, including a sweet and sour curtido (pickled cabbage) and a venomous habanero hot sauce. Satisfying stuff. I have no trouble imagining their other menu items being just as delicious.

Delicious!!! Worth the short drive off the main road. The chicken soup!! The chicken tamales. Wow. And the pupusas.

Worth the drive. Off the main road. All made to order. The caldo de pollo and the pupusa were spot on. The dessert display is also tempting. The flan was delicious.

The staff weee awesome and even brought us the homemade hot sauce (delicious by the way). Their chips for the chips and salsa are obviously homemade. Had to resist not gorging on those. I got a pork chop with rice and beans and fried plantains. The pork chop was fine but it was completely overshadowed by the rice and beans which were overstuffed by the plantains. This was just a delicious meal. The place has a wide variety of seating options for almost any size group. We also noticed they seem to do a brisk takeout business as well. If you're around or even passing through this is a must try.

I love places that let one channel their inner Anthony Bourdain right here close to home. The cuisine is primarily Salvadoran with some Mexican-influenced dishes as well. No disputing the authenticity of the food; this is not a chain. The service was fast and friendly, although it did take a short while for the meal to be delivered. El Carbonero is quite casual, this is not a fancy spot. There were families and workers enjoying their freshly made pupusas. They only take cash, so be prepared. Get outside your comfort zone (perhaps) and definitely give this spot a try. Estarás gratamente sorprendido :)

I don't mind because they were playing some of my favorites! Hahaha, but I highly recommend take out. It did take a bit to get my food, but employees were really nice and food came out perfect! If you've never had pupusas, you must come here! They were so warm and cheesy, it was so good. And the tacos with handmade tortillas! They are a must! Wow, little place, big punch…read more I came here on a Saturday for a late lunch, somewhere between 1:30 or 2:00, and the tables were mostly full. Thankfully, I was getting takeout. When you park, you'll see two doors. The one on the left is for the market, and the one on the right is for the restaurant. I ordered at the cashier's counter next to the door and then sat at an empty table to wait. She estimated 20 minutes on the order, but I think it was more like 15. I ordered the camarones al ajillo, and the shrimp came with white rice, black beans, some fresh veggies (shredded lettuce and a few slices of tomato, cucumber, and radish), and a few thick, soft corn tortillas. The shrimp was flavorful but not spicy. The rice was unseasoned, and it soaked up the sauce from the shrimp easily. I devoured my lunch and barely came up for air. This restaurant is modest and unassuming, and if your usual jam is either chain eateries or upscale dining or both, then you probably won't give it a glance. But if you like Latin food and want to try something a little different from standard chips-and-salsa fare, then I would recommend moving out of your usual groove to give ilobasco a shot.

"Excellent Salvadorean pupuseria and more in Braggtown area of Durham!"…read more We came to try this at around 6pm on a Friday evening. The restaurant is unassuming and sits near the end of a long strip mall. A few other families were eating. One goes to the counter to order (dine-in or carry-out), and the food is then brought to you. The menu is not long-- pupusas (similar to "small but fat quesadillas", if you haven't had one), a few appetizers, and a couple of dishes. They also had three kinds of drinks-- horchata, a tasty mango drink, and a third I don't recall. My wife and I split 4 dishes: a pair of chicken tamales, an order of 3 pupusas with cheese and "loroco" (edible buds from a flower), chicken & potato empanadas, and plantain empanadas. We also got the horchata and the mango drink. Food came out maybe 10 minutes after we ordered, and it was HOT-- clearly just out of the frier for some of them. The masa in the chicken tamales was smooth and SUPER yummy-- I think there could have been a bit more filling, but the taste was still excellent. The chicken and potato empanadas were also really good. I liked the pupusas, but they were a bit mild in taste for me-- I might go for chicken next time, but it was good with the cabbage slaw (see below). And the plantain empanadas were VERY good and super sweet. It's almost like a fried stuffed plantain (also coated with some sugar)-- we couldn't quite tell what the white stuff in the middle was-- my wife thought maybe actual banana, but I wondered if it was some sort of sweet cream filling. Both the savory empanadas and the pupusas came with a side of the cabbage slaw that was quite good-- definitely had some heat to it but not overwhelming. And the drinks were delicious, though the horchata seemed to have an almost chocolate-milk like flavor which was unexpected. The price was SUPER cheap-- pupusas were under $3 each, tamales under $2, etc. We spent $36 including tax and tip and still brought a good bit of food home with us. Service was fine. Neither of us was fluent in Spanish, and the host's English was moderate, so we had a bit of difficulty asking questions (e.g., whether the drinks had dairy/ milk), but it worked out, and he was friendly enough. Overall, we VERY much enjoyed the quality and value of the food we got. High probability we'll return.

The mango agua fresca tasted more like water than mango, but the orchata was very good.
