DIOS MIO !!! Who knew I'd travel all the way from Los Angeles, CA to Hillsborough, NC to find my favorite Mexican Restaurant!?! Okay, I can't take credit for finding it - my sister, who really knows how to find the best spots anywhere and everywhere told us this is the one! Muchas gracias, mi hermana ‍‍ Well, let's be real, I do have other favorites for different reasons, but everything here is fresh, authentic, and on-point! I would make a trip to Hillsborough just to eat at Tacos Los Altos. They have a great menu, the place is super charming (both inside and on the patio in front), plus they have really good margaritas served in glasses that add to the party vibe. Mom and I really enjoyed our food, then my niece and nephew found us and they loved theirs as well. My nephew was the only one to finish his meal, however. The portions are huge, so be ready for leftovers. I had the chicken breast enchiladas suizas and was amazed at how flavorful and moist the white meat was. They don't skimp on the cheese, either! Our server was kind and attentive, and none of the staff seemed annoyed that we were there a little late in the afternoon when they probably could have been taking a little break. We parked near the Colonial Inn and walked along the super charming street to this gem of a restaurant. I want to go back there right now. Great tacos and burritos. Authentic "Californian" Mexican food. Expensive, but everything is.

Great tacos, terrible fries and good tamales. I was happy with the food but it was almost double the price of my favorite taco truck on guess rd. I'd have to be in a real pinch for time to ever order again bc of their pricing. Empty parking lot maybe should make you rethink pricing and actually post them! Instead of my original order being $44! For soup, 3 tacos, fries and tamales. Not posting pricing is shady!! I took the soup off bc $44 at a food truck?! No Restaurant prices at a food truck, only in hboro I guess. read more

My fiance and I LOVED this place. We were hanging out in Hillsborough for the first time, really, and got a hankering for Mexican food. So pleased that we stopped by! The chimichangas were humongous and delicious--possibly the best carnitas I've had. Seemed to be family-run, with two teen boys serving our table (except for when a woman, who I'm guessing is the mom, brought our beer). Super great service and sweet people. Pretty good value too. Made me smile! :) We'll definitely be back. read more

$40 for 2 quesadillas, 1 taco, guac and some corn is pretty expensive. The guacamole, while it was very tasty, was almost 9 dollars for a half pint...WOW. The over $25 quesadillas literally had Only cheese and carnitas, that's it. We were told the quesadillas and taco would come with pico, cilantro and lime. None had any of those things. The chips were also very stale. Luckily for us we brought our food home had some non-stale chips, salsa, cilantro and lime on hand. But for $40 you don't expect to have to go home and add to your meal. read more

I'm so addicted to these tacos! If you're headed to Hillsborough, this taco truck is worth a quick stop. It's on the right side of S. Churton St. just before you hit downtown Hillsborough. It's in a gravel lot sandwiched between a small car dealership and storage shed place. My favorite so far has been the tacos al pastor, which were slightly sweet with visible pineapple. The tacos de carnitas looked dry and finely shredded, however they were seasoned nicely, not too oily or salty. I didn't care for the tacos de cabeza since they were a bit gamey. The carne asada tacos were good but very mild in flavor and seemed to be a popular choice among the lunch crowd. I'm happy I don't have to drive to Durham to Super Taqueria or Carrboro to Tacos Ramirez to get my taco fix since this place is nearby. The owners are really nice and are willing to leave off the cilantro and raw onion toppings if you ask. I really liked their salsa verde and they also offered a pretty spicy red salsa, sliced radishes, and lime wedges. I'll be back to work through the rest of their menu! read more

Their carne asada tacos and their breakfast burritos are amazing. We usually call to order or order online in advance and pick up from the king st location. Also, they don't seem to provide salsa automatically, so you'll have to ask for it. The green salsa is good and the red salsa is smoky. read more

We love this place! We get so excited when someone mentions taco truck for dinner. I've only had the steak tacos and guacamole and chips because it's so good I want it every time we have it. The tacos are hand fried there not like a store bought taco shell. 10 out of 10 we highly recommend! read more

Great food truck spot. I have tried all their different kinds of tacos and everything has been really good. I have also tried their horchata which is amazing. Light, spicy and not too sweet. Tacos come with a few different kind of salsas and sauteed onions in addition to fresh ones and cilantro. Great place to grab a quick bite. read more

Hands down the best Mexican food anywhere ! I can't wait for their brick and mortar restaurant to open on King St in town. I usually get a chicken burrito bowl with extra chicken and I add avocado. When we heard Los Altos was opening up a restaurant in Hillsborough we we're absolutely stoked! Great atmosphere and hospitality. Tacos Los Altos is our go-to for really good authentic tacos in Hillsborough (we used to live in Southern California). The folks running this and their other location that opened on King Street are really genuine and caring with it coming across in their food and interaction with customers. We have been customers since day 1 and they are as consistent as they are good. Not to mention, prices are really fair. Definitely give it a try if you have not before. Favorites: Tacos pollo or carnitas with the rice and beans alongside a Mexican Coke. (Add salsa and radishes). read more

There is much to love about the offerings at Tacos Los Altos, just opened today, May 4, 2019. This is a successful food truck business with a devoted following (they still have the truck) that has gone brick and mortar, always a delicate process. It is in the location of the former Kelsey's Diner in Historic Downtown Hillsborough and so right in the middle of this thriving small town's heart. The chicken and chorizo tacos we had were fresh and tasty. The atmosphere was clean, cool and competent, despite the obvious opening day jitters of the owner who was also racing around serving and cleaning up. The guacamole, while very tasty, came in a serving that was perhaps a bit small we thought; the accompanying totopos were okay, though a little too salty and did not taste homemade (like at Ixtapa, just down the street). Happily, they also serve American and Mexican breakfast and this was something much-needed in our town. Pancakes, eggs to order, bacon, the whole nine yards. Hours are still limited -- 8 am to 3 pm. But this place has charm and location, a friendly, accommodating staff, and we can see it developing nicely with a few necessary changes: seating. Unfortunately, they have chosen to put big tables and big chairs in this petite dining room, and we really hope they reconsider. The chairs, while comfortable, are a struggle to get in and out of and two people end up occupying a space that could house four or five. Ideas: shrink the kitchen a bit and install an eat-in counter against a window in the "kitchen" and more petite cafe tables and chairs in the dining room to accommodate single eaters and doubles. Today it was packed and waits were long-ish. Perhaps two tables outdoors on the sidewalk? I wish them all the luck in the world and will upgrade this review if they work a little more with the set up in the dining room. We will try breakfast next! read more

Great restaurant run by a local family that definitely knows how to make Mexican food the way my Mexican grandma made it. I had pork carnitas tacos and my wife had a pork dish with Colorado sauce. If you like spicy ask for their salsa picante. Only downside is that their liquor license has not been issued yet. I hope Hilsborough authorities put a little more of a rush on this. read more

Really impressed with this taco truck. Sometimes tacos can all start to taste the same but not with these guys. Simple yet delicious. My daughters have become taco snobs will pick to get these tacos over going to some of the more popular taco places. And for 2 bucks a taco I can feed all 3 of them for $12. As for me. This has become my go to spot. Im eating here almost once a week. The food is great: no exaggeration or hyperbole! The meats are seasoned perfectly and are tender and the food always tastes fresh. I've had the burritos (chicken and steak). The burritos at Chipotle and Nana Taco in Durham are no way as good as the burritos here. The tacos are also excellent. If you have not tried Los Altos you are depriving yourself! I'm about to dive into a tortas as soon as finish this post. read more

I eat here at least once a week, and I'm pretty obsessed at this point. I haven't strayed from the tacos menu (yet), but everything I've had has been delicious. I recommend the campechano and the cachete tacos, but they're all great! The sauces and pickled onions (I think that's what they are) are perfect additions, as are the aguas frescas. Stopped here for lunch because my sister in law said it's "so good", she was right! I prefer no meat so I ordered a veggie burrito with cactus. It wasn't on the menu but they were more than happy to make it for me. I had never had cactus before but I'm so glad I tried it, it was great! The whole burrito was perfect, huge too! VEGETARIANS BEWARE! Beans have bacon grease in them. No signs to alert. I am not going to mess with their five-star rating cuz we did not eat here... I asked for options, almost got cactus, asked for beans and the person taking my order was perceptive. Very grateful for that. One of the best burritos I've ever had, and that's from a serious burrito eater who lived in San Francisco and Brooklyn. The rice was incredibly moist and flavorful, and the green salsa was fantastic. I asked for extra avocado in mine, which was delicious. Strongly recommended. read more

The food is outstanding. The service is fast and friendly. I tried it for the first time today. I had the pastor and asada tacos. It came with Salsa verde and salsa rojo, limes, and grilled onions. All delicious. For the record, I lived in California where taco trucks are king, and I am a former chef of 17 years. If you like authentic Mexican food, give it a shot!! The food tasted good but on the drive home I had my husband pull over because I had to puke. Felt fine all day and I'm not pregnant. Ok I figured it might have just been me because my husband and 2 year old daughter are fine. The next morning both of them have explosive diarrhea... all day!! Needless to say will never go back.
