Does not live up to the hype. Went there a couple weeks ago while on vacation. There were a few reviews in the guestbook at our rental house recommending the place. It was by far the worst meal we had on the trip. We didn't care (that much) that it was at a gas station/convenience store/ gift shop, or that it was a go uo to the counter to order type place. The food was just not impressive. i had fried shrimp, which was just OK. Not too much taste, but not overly coated in breading either. Other group members got the flounder, which had about a pound of butter on it and just looked unappetizing. The side of mac and cheese was bland. Cornbread was good, but not good enough to make it worth the trip. There was a steady stream of people coming and going the whole time. Not sure if they were first-timers or regulars. One of the locals told us the next night that there was a recent management change and that the food started going downhill after that. read more

Also did not like to place the order at the counter like a fast food place ( especially after paying $ 16 for fish sandwich, soda and a piece of corn bread). It was very good and has the atmosphere of a hometown diner. They had a ton of options on their menu you can find food for anyone. They've got burgers (veggie and turkey included), ribs, sandwiches, an array of seafood and kid friendly meals. The wait staff was excellent and very friendly and were able to handle our party of 13. What' happened! This use to be a Great place to eat. Today, the portions were small, 1 tiny soft shell on a $12 sandwich! My husband had the flounder dinner... 1 small piece of fish, but lots of fries. Thank goodness there are other choices for eating. This place looked run down and weird but I thought what the heck, places surprise you. Everything I tried here was pretty disgusting. Clam strips were rubbery. The Crabcake was over cooked and very fishy. Mac n Cheese pasta was overcooked. The coleslaw was flavorless. The sweet potato fries weren't even good. Gross. read more

I wasn't impressed. I love little local spots. When we first went in I was not turned off at all by the gas station and order at the counter service. I definitely had hopes that we had discovered a great local's spot. Our server and the woman behind the counter were EXTREMELY friendly. This place definitely gets 5 stars for some southern hospitality. Unfortunately everything else about our experience was just so-so. My mashed potatoes tasted like cafeteria food from when I was a camp counselor. The corn tasted old like it was cooked a few days ago then just reheated. Th mac & cheese was okay. There wasn't anything special about my dish. My husband got the marinated shrimp, which was the best thing at our table, but still nothing we will go out of our way to get again. The sweet tea was pretty good. If the menu items were $5-8 cheaper maybe I wouldn't have had such high expectations for this place. Overall it was a really big let down. read more

So let's see...stopped in with my sons and although a local, I had never been. I had the crab cake sandwich it was ok but not for the price. The fries were cold and the whole feel was very hill billy "red neckish". Therefore, I doubt I will be returning anytime soon. The family and I were staying at Cherrystone Campground in Cape Charles Virginia and decided to try out the award winning sting-rays restaurant. After much inquiring none of the employees knew when was the last time their food won an award. It's not to say that it was not good food. Actually the so called award winning chili was flavorful and quite good. The award winning ribs were good but i have had better at Tiffanys in Union New Jersey. My daughter's friend had the crabcake sandwich and said it's the best she's had. Overall for the location and the limited restaurants in the area. Sting-rays hits the spot after a lazy day in the pool or pier. PS: hospitality was nice. read more

I think the food is very good. My husband has had the crab imperial and he thought it was excellent. I love to go to Kiptopeake to camp just because the restaurant is close (must still drive though). I think of eating here often. If we make it this summer, I'll post an update. BTW, some people may be put off by ordering through a cafeteria type line and then seating themselves while they wait for their food order to be delivered. Mediocre food and mediocre staff will welcome you to this gas station restaurant. My husband had a drumfish sandwich. It was so gross he couldn't even eat it ( he normally loves all fish too). I had to share half of my sandwich with him so he had something to eat. The tables were dirty and the staff were not pleasant. Thought maybe we caught them on a bad day, so we tried them again a year later and nothing was any better. Keep driving south and hit Southland in NC if you are looking for some good eats. read more

The service was bad! I mean really bad! Our silverware was thrown to the table. When the food was brought out the lady argued with us about what we had ordered. We had to have our ticket reprinted to show her we did not order the extra item and that she needed to take it back. So this used to be my go to spot when driving on the Eastern Shore. The prices are a little steep (especially when you enter the restaurant through the gas station entrance and walk through the cheesy gift shop) but the food was great which made the whole experience really neat. WELL, I stopped there a few weeks ago on my way north with a hankering for a burger. It was so-so and the sweet potato fries were bland (even with brown sugar on them). I am by no means a snob with my burgers and if you look at my other reviews I am fairly reasonable when reviewing restaurants. Unfortunately this time I was disappointed. Maybe it is because I got a burger at a seafood joint but for me the experience was not what it used to be and with other truly amazing seafood joints it looks like if I stop there again it will only be for gas. read more

This was once an iconic restaurant which appears to be under new ownership. I recently paid over $40 for two take-out orders of shredded barbecue, macaroni and cheese and cooked apples (they no longer offered greens). The macaroni and cheese was good-everything else was awful: over spiced barbecue, apples that tasted like they just came out of a Sysco can and worst of all, the legendary sweet potato pie tasted like it came from the local grocery store bakery section. Don't waste your time or money. You would be better off buying fried chicken from any of the Eastern Shore's Royal Farms Stores-they always use fresh instead of frozen chicken. It saddens me that this restaurant once recommended in Southern Living Magazine has become a place to avoid-not even a shadow of its former self. read more

Stopped on way down 13 from PA. heading home, had seen the signs many times and thought I'd try it for lunch today. Had the BBQ sandwich with fries. Wife had the fried chicken. Best I can say is they have good sweet tea. BBQ was less than average chicken had no seasoning in batter. Next time I will just keep driving. read more

Cafeteria style with full service prices. After going past this place for eight years we finally were there at a time we could eat. We both ordered the oyster sandwich ($11.99 each) which came with 4 oysters on a dry hamburg bun with fries which we could not switch for coleslaw. Not very accommodating. Got more breading in each bit then oyster. Apple pie was $4.99, more then at a full service restaurant. Our bill was over $30.00. Could have better at Hardee's for a lot less. The bathrooms were a mess and smelly. Sorry, won't go there again. read more

Ordered lunch for 4 was a little pricey for the quality of food received. Two people in our party ordered the grilled cheese and chicken chili, humm... was red chicken chili with the taste of canned ravioli sauce, yikes! We ordered the fried oyster sammy which had 3 small oysters for a $12.95 cost and the $12.95 crab cake sammy which was full of filler & lacked the crab meat. The fries were cold on both of our orders. It Is convenient to Kiptopeke Campground. We have had decent fairly priced breakfast here previously but would likely skip ordering a pricey lunch here next time. read more

I placed a to go order over the phone and then picked up 30 minutes. We had the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms. They were great! Properly cooked and delicious! Also had the potato salad and a slice of pecan pie,which was good also. I will go back again and have the crab/mushrooms again. read more

My family ate at STINGRAYS on July 14, 2015. The food is warmed up frozen food at best. The Crab cake platter was the worst that I have ever had, all filler very little crab meat. The dining room was warm and had an abundance of friendly flies. I cannot recommend you eat there. read more
