Kids tenders (minus one)
Trish K.

cool place that's been around a long time. In a gas station but TASTY. We ordered at the counter and they brought food. Kids menu is a HUGE plus. Lots of seafood- fried or steamed. HUGE fish portion. The sides- the minus to them is they all sound good, so it's too hard to decide! Good for kids, adults, people passing through. Some seating and there were larger tables for groups. Some salad for your vegetarian friends but it's a seafood joint!

Found this place while camping at Kiptopeke state park which is just down the street from here. It's part of a gas station but don't let that fool ya. If you're craving fried seafood , this place slaps. The staff inside were incredibly nice given how busy they were. People tend to come here in big groups. We ended up getting a couple of king platters so we could try a bit of everything. The fried fish was fantastic and our group finished it all pretty quickly. The waitress made sure we were taken care of. I will say that this isn't fast food. Expect to wait a bit because everything is made to order fresh. We were so hungry and devoured everything before I could remember to take a pic. I'll have to remember for next time cuz we'll definitely hit this place up again next time we camp here.

Okay, so a cafe attached to a gas station can be really good! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We had 4 people and arrived around 8 am. An egg sandwich, eggs over medium with cheese grits and corned beef hash and two of the eggs with sausage. Everything was tasty. It was funny that when we arrived, there were two Virginia State Police and by the time we left there were three. I thought it was interesting that they had so much time just to hang out. Anyway, good food, nice staff and good coffee. I'd eat here again for sure.

The breakfast was like how a mother cooks to feed a family. The flavor and portions were great. Everyone was friendly and I liked how it was set up to where you can sit down and eat at your own pace.

Favorite part lace to eat seafood when we are in the area! Consistently fresh seafood every time we stop. The sides change Dailey but we have never been disappointed with the selection. Cooked to perfection! They offer fried or broiled option. Flounder, oysters, scallops all cooked perfectly and seasoned great. Don't let location fool you., it's in the back of a gas station;)

Sting-Ray's hit the spot in an area without a lot of options. It won't let you down nor will it blow you out of the water. 'A-Ok' is the perfect shortened review. Sting-Ray's is more than just a restaurant. It is a bit of everything similar to the Cracker Barrel chain. You'll see a souvenir shop and gas station out front. One you get to the restaurant, you'll be greeted by friendly staff and have plenty of options to select. If you can't decide, they have the choose two (three or four). These combos come with two sides and are priced reasonable. I split the choose 4, trying the fried oysters, catfish, crab cake, and clam strips. I wasn't impressed with the oysters or the catfish, but very happy with the clam and crab. We tried slaw and hush puppies for our sides. The meal fed two easily. I wouldn't make multiple trips in a single stay, however, I would go back should I take another trip down to the area.

The BEST cornbread I've ever had!

While walking along Mason Avenue, I made reservations at The Shanty, and it turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is just a short stroll from the main shopping area, down by the docks. You can park for free along Mason Avenue or drive directly to The Shanty, which has its own parking lot. One of the highlights was enjoying fresh seafood on the open-air porch with beautiful waterfront views. The atmosphere was relaxed, charming, and perfectly summery. They also had plenty of options for the kids, including mac and cheese and chicken fingers, so everyone was happy. I ordered the fish tacos, while my mom enjoyed the seafood chowder and a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for after a day exploring Cape Charles. If you're visiting the area and looking for a casual waterfront meal with great seafood, a family-friendly menu, and a fun coastal vibe, The Shanty is definitely worth a visit.

The Shanty is not a large restaurant, but it has an amazing bar and great views from their deck on the bay. The service was great and our server created a "no rush" just sit back and relax vibe, even though they were busy. The drink menu has a nice selection of cocktails. My wife, an orange crush connoisseur, said the Shanty's crush was very good! They also have a nice beer selection including local area craft beers. The Frogman Lager on the menu has been one of my favorites when I visit VA, so it was nice to see on the menu. We started off with a 1/2 dozen local oyster, which were nice and sweet. The crab dip was amazing and full of crab! We split the shrimp Po-boy. The sandwich was loaded with plump tasty shrimp on an amazing roll. Typically, in beach towns the shrimp Po-boys are skimpy on the shrimp, but not at the Shanty. Overall, a great visit and a place we'd return.

We popped in for a casual beer break, and it quickly turned into one of the highlights of the day. The space itself is gorgeous! It's open, airy and designed with a laid-back coastal vibe that fits Cape Charles perfectly. You order both beer and food inside at the counter, which keeps things easy and low- key. I went with the Pilsner, and it was exactly what I wanted, perfect after a day out exploring. Their beer list has something for everyone, whether you're into lighter options or something with a bit more depth. We didn't order food this time, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked incredible. They've got plenty of options like burgers, nachos, and other brewery favorites that definitely seemed worth trying next time. What really stood out was the atmosphere. There was so much going on in the best way. They had a dog adoption event happening outside while we were there, which added such a fun, community-driven vibe. They also host live music and other events regularly, so it feels like there's always something to check out. The outdoor space is huge and perfect if you're with a group or bringing kids. There's a fire pit, games like cornhole, and plenty of room to spread out and hang for a while. Definitely the kind of place you plan to stop at for one drink and end up staying much longer. I will be adding this to my must visit list anytime I'm on the Eastern Shore.

This past weekend, I visited, and it happened to be Restaurant Week. My go-to meal is their crab cake sandwich and fries, but I ventured out and tried their special: New England Clam Chowder and Seafood Mac and Cheese. The chowder was okay. The clams were a little chewy and it lacked flavor; needed a few more dashes of salt at the least. The seafood Mac and Cheese had potential. The crab meat on top looked enticing. The noodles were cooked to perfection. But the flavor was also lacking. It was not cheesy enough to call a Mac and cheese and again needed more salt and/or other seasonings. There also wasn't much seafood to boast about. Maybe a scallop or 2, a very small quantity of shrimp....the crab meat and roll were the highlight. 3 STARS (for this visit). The service was GREAT! Attentive, fast, and friendly. But I was disappointed with this dish. I'll be back. I'll get my crab cake!

She recommended the turkey wings, so I went with that. I like my turkey wings well done and nicely browned, and I specifically requested the brownest ones in the batch. She told me they had just come out and were well done. When I got home, only the top wing was browned--the one underneath wasn't--which was frustrating since I made a very specific request. She also seemed to have a slight attitude about the request, which didn't help. The turkey wings themselves were just okay. The cabbage could've used more seasoning, but the white rice and gravy were good. Unfortunately, the cornbread that was supposed to come with the meal was missing. I would try this place again, but I'd likely order one of the other items I was interested in--not the turkey wings.

I placed a takeout order and experienced an unacceptable wait time of over one hour with very little communication regarding the status of my food. Throughout the wait, I received no meaningful updates from the server, despite being one of the last customers remaining in the restaurant. The server appeared to be the only employee handling customers and moved very slowly, which further contributed to the delay. While waiting, I observed several concerning issues that reflected poorly on the restaurant's professionalism and food service standards. Kitchen staff were openly arguing and using inappropriate language, including profanity, within earshot of customers. This behavior created an uncomfortable environment and was highly unprofessional. Additionally, I observed staff members walking around while wearing gloves and touching various surfaces and items before handling food. This raised concerns regarding proper food safety and sanitation practices. After waiting more than an hour, I finally received my order only to discover that the food was cold and one of the items I paid for was missing entirely. Despite the lengthy delay, poor service, and missing item, no apology was offered by any member of the staff. I ultimately left the restaurant with an $87 bill and a completely unsatisfactory experience. As a paying customer, I expected better communication, professionalism, food quality, and customer service. Unfortunately, none of these expectations were met. I am requesting that management review this incident and provide an appropriate response regarding the concerns outlined above. I would also appreciate consideration of a refund, credit, or other resolution given the significant issues with my order and overall experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you regarding how this complaint will be addressed.

A staff told us that wait time came reach to 50 mins due to walk ins and online orders and all food is cooked to order with 2 chefs. I chose to stay because I already knew what I wanted and didn't want to spent time trying to find another restaurant in the area, especially with 2 kids. There is a small seating area. When we got to host stand to order, I was told that Grits and waffle cut off at 4pm daily... this upset me because I had looked at menu prior to coming and that's what I really wanted. Im visiting from out of state, so it's not easy to come back. I ordered at 4:17pm. We were seated after ordering. The process is interesting. Around 4:23pm, I saw another table get chicken and waffles and it just irritated me because that's what I wanted. Plus, I was very VERY hungry at this time. The menu really should indicate time cut off for food. Also, pasta doesn't get sold until 2pm. Kids shrimp came at 4:56 and kids chicken came a couple minutes later. Kids meal come with caprisun. The black building threw me off a bit and I drove past it at first. No parking lot and street parking is hit or miss; something to keep in mind if you or someone in your party has mobility issues. Once inside, I was expecting a carry out place, but they have a nicely set up dining area and even a bar. Ordering and pick up were efficient. I love the names of the entrees that rep Norfolk, like Ballentine, Berkly, Park Place, and Shoop Place. I tried the Salmon & Shrimp Cheesesteak and the Berkley Big Boy - a fish filet, 4 jumbo shrimp, 3 crab balls, lettuce, tomato, Sho'Tyme special sauce on a hoagie roll. The Berkley Big Boy is where the seafood preparation shined. The shrimp were indeed jumbo, needing multiple bites to take them down, the whiting was also fried nicely, and I was pleasantly surprised that the crab balls were delicious. I'm not a huge fan of the Sho'tyme sauce, but I can see why people like it. A little sweet for my taste. I expected more cheese in the cheesesteak. The shrimp were the best part, seasoned and cooked well, not over or under cooked. The bread on both sandwiches was disappointing and the most tasteless part, not soft or warm, dare I say, stale? The fries were just barely passable, frozen fries with a coating, and they weren't particularly hot or crispy. So this is a place where you just get seafood, no fries, no bread, or maybe the other sides are good. So yeah, Berkley Big Boy was the star. Next time I would try a platter or maybe the Crab cake, shrimp, and lobster BLT, because it's on a brioche bun and the fries are parmesan truffle. I hope they stay in business and keep improving.
