I'd give it a five if it weren't for two things: flies in the diner and broken soap dispenser in the women's bathroom. The flies definitely were a turnoff. But the food? YES. The fried chicken portion was huge - half a chicken basically. It was seasoned well (maybe a bit too salty but went well with turnip greens which weren't seasoned as well). I love the Exmore Diner. This is a REAL diner - I think at least 70 years old. Not fancy, basically the kind of dive locals love. but the food is great. Their crab cakes are superb. Lots of fresh seafood. I've never had a bad meal here. Prices are very reasonable. Don't forget to check out their desserts. Smith Island cake is often available and in many different flavors. My husband stumbled on the Exmore Diner. We can not pass up a diner. When entering there is maybe 18 stools at a bar top, and maybe 6 booths. Small, but quaint. They offer take out, and eat in. This is very much a local place where many are regulars. I absolutely love that! It is a little on the dirty side. But, I can look past things like that in certain things. It's an old diner, mostly original. The menu is not too large. Which is perfect. It is not overwhelming. They have birch beer! Our waitress was fantastic. We had 1-2 come up and assist us. Team work makes the dream work. The food. I was told the specials for the day were popular. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich with Lima beans, Mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes. My husband classic cheeseburger with crinkle fries and a club sandwich. My children, game and cheese sandwich, and a BLT. Everything was amazing! Just what we were hoping for. My hot roast beef sandwich was fabulous! The gravy was delicious. Take not they add sugar to the macaroni and cheese, so it is in the sweeter side. It was pretty good, just different. I finished my meal with a chocolate milk shake and a Key Lime Smith Island Cake. What... it's not Jan 1, diet hasn't started. Ha! Joking. Both the cake and milkshake were just the sweetness needed. Exmore Diner has an authentic classic diner feel. Retro colors and decor, stools and booths like from the 1950s, friendly waiters, families with children - friends of the staff - playing, etc. I just wish the food had been better. Plenty of standard diner standards on the menu. For some reason I got the crab cakes - definitely NOT standard. But I thought: it's on the Virginia Eastern Shore, Chesapeake Bay, famous for crabs, so why not. They had very little seafood flavor, probably because they had more fillers and less crab. Too much other flavors from excessive seasoning. And a weird gummy texture from whatever they used for a binder, and in spite of said binder they fell apart easily. The fries were dry, but helped by the cocktail sauce, oddly served as an accompaniment to the crab cakes, along with the more traditional remoulade. The coleslaw was too wet and too mayonnaisey. I wasn't planning on having dessert but I heard that they were out of the two items they offered that day - chocolate cake and key lime pie. Seems odd to be completely out but it was close to closing time. The rest rooms were clean. But the men's room was out of soap so I had to use the women's (door open and unoccupied) to wash my hands. I'm not saying don't go here - close by options are limited - but manage your expectations, enjoy the ambience, and don't get the crab cakes. read more

Cruising on Route 13 and looking for breakfast, this is your stop. A true diner. Small and friendly with a menu from local seafood to breakfast favorites. Service was nice and fast. Food was good, nothing fancy but just what we needed to fuel our morning. We had the creamed beef special and a crab cake sandwiches. Hash browns are homemade and come with or without onion. Tucked away off the main drive, rt13, this diner is just the same as it was back in the day. Great local food and fresh vegetables. The employees are friendly. There are only about 10 tables and a counter area wheee you can sit and dine. I had the steamed shrimp, served piping hot. Be sure you have plenty of napkins. I am on a road trip and have been using Yelp Reviews heavily. The Exmore ratings made them seem a good bet for a quick bite. I Went for dinner, the food was not fresh- I had the bay scallops which were listed as a special. They came fried and I would guess previously frozen because they were not tasty. The sides- String beans were canned or frozen and inedible. The mashed potatoes were good. The garden salad was straight out of a bag, nothing trimmed or cut and a Ken's dressing packet. It was a terrible and expensive experience. I can't recommend it based on the experience I had. Hopefully it was an off night. read more

Tiny diner with authentic, old time atmosphere. Servers were friendly and helpful. We were a large family and took up 2 booths. The seafood platter was huge, came out on 2 platters. Highlights were 2 large pieces of fish( cod and catfish, I think. Butterflied shrimp and popcorn shrimp were prepared with a light batter, chunks of crab in large crab cake. Didn't care for the clam fritter (looks like a pancake, acrid flavor) and the clam strips are the usual tough customers. This could be shared by 3 people!. Fries are delicious. Mac and cheese kinda weird as it is sweetened. Beautiful large salad with many shrimp was enjoyed. Very reasonable prices. Western Omelet was full of veggies. I'm not sure what I was expecting. I guess I was hoping for the little country diner with super nice people and a comfy little place. It appears they know the locals AND they know if you're not local. They were polite but made no effort to engage in conversation like they did with the others. No worries. I sat at the bar which had been freshly wiped and was still wet with a heavy smell of bleach or chlorine or some sort of disinfectant. It was certainly a clean place. (I had plenty of time to stare at the appliances while I waited for my food). The food for breakfast is mostly built to order. There are a few platters and specials. The specials are on the white board above the soda machine area. Since I stay away from lots of carbs I only ordered potatoes, eggs, and bacon. My order showed up with those three AND a side of toast. At their amazingly cheap prices, I didn't see it worth the effort to complain. My whole bill for all four items came it 6 bucks. They weren't skimpy either. At least a full potato worth of home fries and four pieces of bacon. The potatoes weren't salty which I appreciated. My eggs were cooked perfectly at over medium just like I asked. I want to give it a three because it wasn't an amazing experience, because it was just ok, but it really does have a great deal to offer, it's speedy, and it's worth a try. So four stars. read more

I have to say that my favorite thing about this place is the atmosphere. When I walked past this diner that looks like a mobile unit or even, dare I say, a stereotypical country diner from a TV show or movie, I had to go there. When I got inside, it was a little tight, but not too tight to be uncomfortable, for it went with the low, small, mobile-looking diner feel. Compared to another restaurant in Exmore, when looking for a place to eat on a budget, I was informed by a local at the festival to go here not the cafe and, when getting here, she was right. I went simple and got a burger and fries, and it was pretty good, and it came fairly fast. My only minor complaints were the parking, as it's not simple to tell where you can park with no parking "spaces," and the customer service which was just average (not super friendly but far from rude). Best "customer service" moment though was, as I was a tiny pressed for time, it was nice to get the receipt as soon as the server noticed I was finished with a smile on her face. While staying in nearby Eastville we struggled with the dining situation in this area. It's very rural and there's not many choices plus it's void of any chain restaurants. Cape Charles' dining establishments seemed a little too fancy and out of budget for us. At the suggestion of someone local they sent us to Exmore dinner, raving about the food, little did we know that it would take us 40 minutes to get there. With only about 45 minutes till closing time we grabbed the only available booth. The place was packed with locals and us Yankees stood out like a sore thumb. While the exterior has that vintage diner look and the flower boxes were a nice touch, the inside just felt old and tired. I tried not to look around too much because it's the kind of place you KNOW is dirty but we didn't have any other options. The menu was basic diner fare, but very reasonably priced. A few things were foreign to us and must be local staples. Country fried steak is one of them and is exactly what the name implies, although it tasted more like a pork chop. While it was cooked well and not greasy it wasn't something I would order again. The string beans were not what I expected and probably from a can but I liked them. A side of fried apples is basically just a can of pie filling heated up. Didn't really care for that either. The meal was edible, overly salted, and nothing special, certainly not worth going back for. I doubt if anything is really homemade as it seemed like everything was frozen or came from a can. Hubby had a lackluster burger but raved about the onion rings which were a tad greasy. Dinner for two was around $16 As it got closer to their 8 pm closing time customers continued to come in till it was standing room only. I'm sure the capacity that night exceeded the number of customers allowed per fire code. Despite the crowd our food came out fast. The place is so small and the locals so loud you could hear everyone's conversations. Our waitress was very back alley country but pleasant and efficient. When I asked her what there is to do in this area she suggested the "Walmart another 50 minutes up the road." You know you're in the sticks when Walmart is the only form of entertainment! We used the bathroom before the long ride back to our airbnb. It was there that it felt like the entire back half of the building was sinking or about to fall off. Now that we've spent some time in the area we know that nothing on this side of the bay is going to be better so as a tourist suck it up and deal. Locals think it's the cat's meow, but we wouldn't recommend or return. SIDENOTE: the food scene was sooo depressing overall in this area that for 4 days we only ate 2 meals a day (one being provided by our airbnb hostess) because it was such a struggle to find decent meals. Where do I begin, I have been to this place 3 times in the past month and each time I have been disappointed. First of all, don't order the chicken and dumplings, they taste like they came out of a can right along with those "candied yams". Also, just because you put a massive amount of butter in box mash potatoes, does not take the taste away. The poor clam fritter sandwich was served on two pieces of wet, smashed, white bread...no buns I guess‍. The person that answered the phone has the worst customer service skills ever. Lastly,when you order a brownie sundae in a half filled cup, you'd expect there to be a brownie, hence the title, but no you get a cup of crap with no brownie. I am so done.
