I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with my recent experience at Southern Comfort Restaurant and Lounge in Norfolk, Virginia. I placed a takeout order and experienced an unacceptable wait time of over one hour with very little communication regarding the status of my food. Throughout the wait, I received no meaningful updates from the server, despite being one of the last customers remaining in the restaurant. The server appeared to be the only employee handling customers and moved very slowly, which further contributed to the delay. While waiting, I observed several concerning issues that reflected poorly on the restaurant's professionalism and food service standards. Kitchen staff were openly arguing and using inappropriate language, including profanity, within earshot of customers. This behavior created an uncomfortable environment and was highly unprofessional. Additionally, I observed staff members walking around while wearing gloves and touching various surfaces and items before handling food. This raised concerns regarding proper food safety and sanitation practices. After waiting more than an hour, I finally received my order only to discover that the food was cold and one of the items I paid for was missing entirely. Despite the lengthy delay, poor service, and missing item, no apology was offered by any member of the staff. I ultimately left the restaurant with an $87 bill and a completely unsatisfactory experience. As a paying customer, I expected better communication, professionalism, food quality, and customer service. Unfortunately, none of these expectations were met. I am requesting that management review this incident and provide an appropriate response regarding the concerns outlined above. I would also appreciate consideration of a refund, credit, or other resolution given the significant issues with my order and overall experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter. An okay dining experience. We made a reservation for a large party. It was our group and one other table of 4 occupied in the building. I didn't care for the way the bathroom smelled either. The food took a long time and was only okay tasting. My baked chicken didn't have much taste. The green beans were very salty. The macaroni didn't have a lot of taste either. The menu has a lot of options that all sound good. I couldn't decide between the fried shrimp, fried chicken, fried pork chops, liver, or turkey wings, so I asked the waiter which item was most popular. She recommended the turkey wings, so I went with that. I like my turkey wings well done and nicely browned, and I specifically requested the brownest ones in the batch. She told me they had just come out and were well done. When I got home, only the top wing was browned--the one underneath wasn't--which was frustrating since I made a very specific request. She also seemed to have a slight attitude about the request, which didn't help. The turkey wings themselves were just okay. The cabbage could've used more seasoning, but the white rice and gravy were good. Unfortunately, the cornbread that was supposed to come with the meal was missing. I would try this place again, but I'd likely order one of the other items I was interested in--not the turkey wings. read more

Last time I ate there was a few years ago, and I enjoyed the meals ordered, so I decided to order takeout. Mistake. My order was missing the entree and sides. The house salad came with cheese but I asked for no cheese. Asked for salad dressing, but no dressing. Did receive the cole slaw and cornbread. They were OK. The driver was also frustrated because they were told I was receiving a substitute (there was none) so it was a disappointing order, and it took over an hour to arrive. And that I would be refunded. Our experience in this restaurant was overall poor. The location is dirty, floors are sticky. The server greeted us with a list of at least 10 items they were out of from the menu. They didn't have sweet tea? No alcohol? Insane. We waited at least an hour for two very basic meals. Food was ok but not worth the wait or poor experience. We won't be back. read more

Food presentation is great. The ginger ale was the bomb. Fish was good. Mac and cheese was not good at all. Yams were okay. Potato salad was okay. Cornbread was very dry. Only one server so didn't get many refills on drinks which was not her fault. Prob won't return. read more

For $20 it's not a bad deal but... The flavor of the wings I got was Honey lemon pepper, I couldn't taste any "Honey". The mac and cheese was lacking cheese and honestly the homemade taste. We are back for Mom's 85th Birthday and this place did not disappoint the ambience of smooth R&B jazz laid back influence e filled the air with the sweet aroma of southern cusine filling the air. The Bar area was occupied by locals who patronize the Su day brunch and midday adult beverage vide couples with delicious appetizers. We ordered a broad array of southern cuisines from shrimp crab cakes to wings, pork chops and much much more. The sides were traditional and consistent from Collard greens to Mac and Cheese shuttling over to candied yams not a buffet but a array of good Ole cooking. Served with a smile and desire to please the only draw back was the side order of lamb chops which was lamb chop was only 1 lamb chop for 10.00 each it was thin and and small not worth the uncharted other than that the meal was satisfying. I never write on apps but I'll frank, this place was awful. When I went there they were out of like half their menu, I get it stuff happens. The waitress said she would get me a water and instead decided to talk for 15min, Never got the water. Plus there wasn't very many people there. This is your typical just above hole in the wall restaurant. I mean this in a positive way! I picked this place from a soul food restaurant near me. -I got service from the bartender which was average. She had drink orders to fill. I gave my phone number for her to call me in 30 minutes when my food was ready. Well that never happened. I went inside and my food was waiting. This was take out and I ordered the half chicken fried with collard greens and Mac n cheese. The food was actually good. I'm not used to white cheese for the Mac but nevertheless it was tasty. The greens were mid. Not cooked with any smoked meat as I could tell but seasoned enough. The corn bread was slapping! The piece was fair for the portion. There was no AC or ventilation... no way I could eat inside. I would love to go there again for another menu item and mixed drink. The drinks I saw looked amazing. I'd go there again for sure. We were visiting family and family recommended this place for their chicken wings. So decided to check it out and specifically get the chicken wings. The chicken wings were huge! The collard greens were seasoned well and went real good with the cornbread. The best part was the crab dip! I definitely go back just to order the crab dip. Customer service was great and ambiance was chill. 4 stars because the potato salad wasn't too great. It was a little too mustardy for me that it was overbearing. If you love liver and onions this is the place for you! I go for the chicken club sandwich with the best sweet potato fries ever! Waitress didn't miss a beat anticipating our needs! I called to. place an order and I was told I had to pay by card over the phone. My response was I am paying by cash when I get there. So, I get there at 9:42 and was told the kitchen was closed at 9:30. That should have been said over the phone I was told they were out of alot of sides, but turkey wings were still available. The website says you close at 10:00 and I had just spoke to you all. I was on my way back to Richmond. Black businesses are so unprofessional and rude. Mane... I'm from Memphis and have been living in New England and New York for 12+ years. I've eaten at restaurants that have boasted of serving southern style food and absolutely NONE of them have even remotely come close until today when I ate at Southern Comfort. The soul rolls, honey buttered biscuits and cornbread, fried chicken, collard greens and candied yams were absolutely FYE! Lawd... my compliments to the chef because they absolutely put their whole foot in the food (For the unaware, it means they cooked the food perfectly). And to Jecca, the lovely waitress who is a woman of many hats that does it all, was superb in serving us. The Strawberry Henny Drop drink was HITTING! I had 2 lol. The ambiance was nice. The restaurant interior is outdated/ old looking. They either been in business for years or inquired the location from a prior establishment and didn't renovate anything. But the food was good. I got the wing dinner and i really enjoyed the Thai chili sauce. Wish the cornbread was bigger and the waitresses were nice and gave genuine feedback on the food when i asked. I honestly didn't know this place existed until a co-worker wanted to try this place. So I was with a party of 3 and we were seated at a high table. The place is nicely colored teal and black. It took a while for the server to come over (they weren't busy). She was very pleasant and took our orders. I will tell you they are NOT fast! The drinks came which were mediocre (2 of us tried the southern comfort punch). Now the food on the other hand was good! If you like your food seasoned this is where it's at! They have a lunch menu, happy hour food & drink menu, plus brunch, taco Tuesdays, and they have daily specials. I will most likely be back to try other food items. read more

Dropped off the menu and you have to go to the register to ask someone to take your order 30 mins later.. I want to be fair. The one server in the whole restaurant was nice and the food was good. One server on Juneteenth is insane. Also heads up, no alcohol which was disappointing. So if you want a drink with your food, opt out. It took 50 minutes for our food to come out and it was only one other table when we got there. I sought this place out because i wanted to support a black owned restaurant on Juneteenth but im remorseful; i want better for us truly. Seems unorganized, poor / under staffing and again for it to be Juneteenth; why no specials or acknowledgment. You don't see this energy from other cultures on cinco de mayo or st Patrick's day so its very disappointing but i blame myself because if thats what i wanted i should have sought out a restaurant honoring the holiday but regardless it was just sad. In town for the Jazz Legacy jazz festival this weekend & stopped in for lunch. Let me tell you that our server Jaelynne was so amazing! Very attentive & provided great customer service. She made our drinks to perfection! The chicken wings were piping hot! My friends ate them so quick and the table was filled with bones!...our main courses were all delicious! We had fried catfish, bbq ribs, fried shrimp, shrimp po boys, honey lemon pepper wings and I had the turkey wings featured in this review. Perfect visit from beginning to the end! As if I even need to say this, I located this place on Yelp! Once we arrived, I realized I've been here before but I believe they were crowded and we couldn't get in, or something similar. Well, we're back! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the bartender Mike. Mike was super laid back and cool! We got right to it with our questions about drinks and food items and Mike was prepared to give it his all! He even provided my husband with a sample or 2 of questionable items. Hubby loved everything! Collectively we ordered roasted turkey wings with veggies and potato salad, baked catfish with broccoli and yams, chicken wings off of the happy hour menu and some good good drinks (Bahama Mama and Hurricane)! The only downfall with this place is everything took quite a bit of time. Mike did apologize a few times for the delay. Let me tell you the wait was well worth it! Those chicken wings came out so crispy and tender! I was mad that they cooked them because they were too hot for me to eat! Yes! I said it!! Lol The wings were a great size and seasoned perfectly! Hubby genuinely loved his turkey wings and sides. He kept stating he's not going to be able to finish this meal because it was so much! He almost finished that meal! Haha My catfish was the perfect portion sized entrée. It was so good that I was taking small bites to devour longer! Yes small bites! I rarely get grilled or blackened catfish while out because it never comes out right but today, it came out rightttt! Father's Day June 16, 2025, 1030 AM My wife waited at the front of the line for approximately 20 minutes, only to be informed that it would take an additional 45 minutes to be seated. This was despite the fact that nearly 40% of the tables were visibly unoccupied. We were told the delay was due to a backlog in the kitchen, so we continued to wait. While I consider myself a patient person, my patience wore thin when I saw two individuals--identified by staff as regulars--walk past the line and be seated immediately. It became evident that the staff was overwhelmed, and the restaurant's service process was in need of serious improvement. Customers choose restaurants not only for the food but also for the service--both are equally important. While I won't comment on the food, as this was our first visit, I can say that the service left much to be desired. Frustrated, my wife and I decided to leave. As we exited, we passed a line of more than 30 people still waiting. Interestingly, another couple followed us out. We went to a different restaurant, where we were seated and served within 30 minutes. The service was excellent--and so was the food. read more
