185 in Poquoson is the Real Deal -- Don't Sleep on This Place! It is always unplanned trips that allow me to explore a bit and glad I did. I was sitting in the parking lot of a large chain breakfast pulled up Yelp to see what I might be missing. Glad wasn't lazy...15 mins later I was in the parking lot for 185! If you haven't been to 185 on Little Florida Road in Poquoson, you are seriously missing out. This charming, family-owned neighborhood gem is everything a great local restaurant should be and then some. The moment I walked through the door, I felt it. You're not just a customer here; you're a guest. The welcome was immediate and genuine and set the tone for the whole experience before I even sat down. I ordered the brisket sandwich with sweet potato fries, and wow, it delivered. I was surprised the blackberry chipotle sauce worked BERY WELL! The brisket was tender, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Paired with perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries, it was the kind of meal that sticks with you long after you leave. This isn't reheated, thrown-together food, you can taste the love and craft in every bite. It was like Woman Power this morning with all ladies from front to back. Their whole vibe was awesome from the front of the house to the back. I have to give a very special shoutout to my waitress, Tiffany... she was absolutely AWESOME. Attentive, personable, and full of good energy, she made the whole experience even better. The kind of server who makes you feel like you're dining with a friend. Looks like 185 was ranked #87 on Yelp's Top 100 Restaurants in 2023, and after my visit, I completely understand why. The owners obviously had a beautiful vision and it is being executed incredibly...to my benefit today! Five stars, without question. We seen the reviews on Yelp and was on our way to Suffolk from Williamsburg. The small size surprised me, the mismatched tables and chairs had a vibe of its own and made it a kind of homey invite. Only 1 table was empty and we were seated quickly. It was clearly a local favourite and there was quickly a lineup with people willing and expecting to wait. The service was quick and friendly. The food was good home cooked meals and came out quickly. I had brisket scramble and it was delicious. It needed the sweet compote to balance the richness. My wife had the biscuits with gravy and eggs were good. There was lots of sausage in the country gravy. The cheese grits were tasty. Overall the food was very good and a solid experience. Since I live with a chef who cooks this quality of food often, I probably wouldn't drive here, however if we were in the area I'd definitely stop here and try other items as well. read more

My very good friend recommended this place for brunch and I'm so happy we did. We got in around noon which was perfect because it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and our waitress Jess came over to take our drink order. There was another waitress came over and asked if we wanted to buy a cookie she had made. It was chocolate chip coconut and smelled amazing. My friend bought one and was pleased that it was still warm from the oven. Then Jess came back to take our orders. I ordered the blackened shrimp salad, my friend had a breakfast bowl and my godkids split another breakfast meal. The chef was so amazing, they even put the kids' breakfast on 2 separate plates and it was alot of food! Delightful place for breakfast, lunch or brunch. Very friendly staff, willing to go the extra mile for you. Doesn't look like much, very small with mismatched tables and chairs, but what there is is charming. Looks like a place you might find in Ghent, but it is very much at home in Poquoson. My boyfriend and I went together on a Saturday morning. They were super busy so we sat at the community table so a table of 6 could sit timely. I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while ever since it came on the Yelp top 100 restaurants list. I even drove 3 hours to get here and try the food. It's a cute little diner style restaurant retrofitted from an old tiny house (as evidenced further by the fact that it's practically on a residential street). The decor also makes it feel like you're still just eating dinner at someone's home which is interesting. We were seated promptly and were greeted by the kindest server, who let us take our time looking over the menu and always made sure we had everything we needed. Now onto the food. My husband ordered the chicken Parmesan sandwich with extra pesto. I had some of it and Let me tell you it tastes just as phenomenal as my photo looks. The bread was fresh, the chicken perfectly crispy, juicy, and tender. The marinara sauce was delicious! It seemed homemade, with real tomatoes and was perfectly tangy. There was plenty of sauce and a perfect mozzarella cheese pull. The pesto was also fresh and had a great flavor. All in all that must be one of THE BEST Chicken Parmesan sandwiches I've ever had. Especially noting that this is a brunch spot and I wouldn't expect the lunch food to be as good, but boy did they prove me wrong. It came with decently tasting waffle fries as a side. 5/5 for sure! Next we ordered the smoked brisket burrito which had the brisket, scrambled eggs, 'smash browns', and two types of cheese. There was also a blackberry chipotle sauce on the side for dipping. I thought that the breakfast burrito was decent but the meat was most definitely not what I would call a brisket... It was very dry exactly like beef jerky, and lacked much flavor. I would say that anyone who's had decent brisket knows that it's supposed to be fall off the bone tender and be swimming in flavor. For that I was sadly disappointed as that was my main meal and I'd come all the way just for that burrito. The eggs were fresh, but there was way too much cheese, and that's coming from a cheese lover who always adds extra. The blackberry chipotle jam was delicious but putting it on the burrito couldn't save it for me and just made for a weird combination. For this I would say it's a 3/5 for me. I had their smash browns as my side and ordered sour cream to put on as I always do with potatoes, but was pleasantly surprised to say they didn't need anything extra at all. The flavor was phenomenal and the smash browns fluffy and moist. I would come back again just for them alone. 5/5 for me. Best hash browns I've ever had. We ordered one final dish just to try it and that was the French toast. The bread was cooked well and had an ok taste. There was a scoop of real butter mixed with cinnamon placed on top. They seemed ok, but something about the flavor was off and we figured out it had too much salt. So much so there was no helping it by putting on the maple syrup. Someone just added too much salt to the French toast when cooking it and it ruined the whole thing. Would have been great especially with the cinnamon butter if it weren't for that extra salt. The food was pretty good and I would definitely still make the drive for the smash browns and the chicken Parmesan sandwich, however I would want to try some more items on the menu to make up for this time. For this reason I still recommend it, though I would stay away from the burrito and French toast. TLDR: Great service, mostly great dishes including the mouth watering chicken Parmesan sandwich and smash browns, but avoid the French toast and brisket burrito. We decided to go out for breakfast while running errands. I've been to 185 a long time ago and I won't wait so long to go back again. We were greeted and seated quickly. The decor is Beachy and elegant. The seating is somewhat awkward but that's because it is a small place. A few tables for two would make it more intimate. The bathroom was very clean and decorated with the same theme. They had a dish with feminine products if needed. That is always a nice touch. My boyfriend said the coffee was a little weak for his liking. The mimosa was good, I had the OJ. It took a little bit for us to have our order taken but was well worth it. The food was incredible and the portions are large. I had the sausage breakfast burrito. It was nice and cheesy and the tortilla was nice and crisp. The salsa ( if you request it ) tastes very fresh. My boyfriend had the 185 plate and was very happy with it. The bacon was cooked perfectly and had a very distinct and great flavor. I'm looking forward to trying more menu items. I've had 185 on my to try list for far too long and seized an opportunity that found me in Newport News...close enough! If traveling off I64 it's about 15 min drive or so to their front door. They offer parking, but not too many spaces. I'm unsure where overflow would be. The exterior is downright roadside dive feel which I adored! I noticed an outdoor patio on the side available on season. Upon entering for a weekday late last lunch I was asked to sit wherever I liked. The small dining room is more country than dive. 185 offers large tables for group dining. The kitchen is open for customer viewing which I enjoyed. I utilized the restroom which was clean with proper supplies. The Yelp app offers a check-in deal for a FREE drink. My waitress was the owner and she got menus and we discussed options. She was friendly, smiling and even singing along to overhead tunes. The atmosphere was comfortable for a solo experience. Most other tables were occupied by groups. I ordered a sweet vanilla ice coffee and water. My water was immediately placed on the table in a plastic cup. After reviewing the fabulous menu options and accompanying pics on the Yelp app menu site which is very helpful. I had been eyeballing the shrimp & grits which is a dish I love, but often it's underwhelming. When it was time to order my drink had yet to arrive. To my delight the owner was happy that I chose a favorite dish. My ice coffee arrived also in a plastic cup with lid & straw. It was super and perfectly sweet as ordered. I can't hide my disappointment that drinks are in plastic cups. So for me this is a deduction on their score without tasting a bite. My pretty white bowl of piping hot shrimp & grits hit the table within 15 minutes and looked amazing! It's picky, but there was cheese on the side of the bowl stuck to the side. The utensils were sturdy and packaged in a paper bag. The grits come with a large spoon. Let's get to the taste of the gorgeous contents of the bowl. The dish visually could have been elevated when wiped down. The top and interior side had residue. Picky I know, but presentation maters. First bite I knew it was a grand slam. The flavors popped with some heat, but did not distract from the taste. There is sauce on the table for those that want more heat. The shrimp was prepped exquisitely, I think a bit of cayenne pepper, but unsure. The grits had a unique flavor that had me smile ear to ear on every bite. It's the best shrimp & grits dish I've had in COCA and holds its own among those I've had in NOLA. It was an honor that Chef Rosario came out to check on me. We chatted a bit and I learned he came from Missouri. The business has been open four years, but he came in more recently. The original chef is still involved and smokes meats. The overall experience deserves high praise, however a 4.5 rounding down seems to fit best. I understands the challenges of small businesses, but would like to see them not use plastic cups for dine in. We are no longer in the pandemic era and they are not a fast food restaurant. The gist is that the food is good; the organization is not. We were welcomed by smiley staffers but it went downhill from there. Our ask to sit outside was turned down and stating we're happy to wait didn't help. A blunt "no" was the answer. I have been waiting to return here since my first visit earlier this year during a Yelp Elite event. It is such a cute restaurant that can easily be missed because it blends in well within the neighborhood. I parked across the street without difficulty. I ordered the sweet tea and brisket sandwich. They were out of fries so I had smash-browns. The brisket sandwich was as good as I remembered. The blackberry chipotle sauce wasn't spicy and a great pairing for this tender, slow cooked, smoky meat. The smash-browns were also really good. It reminded me of fried potatoes I grew up eating. The sweet tea could have been a little sweeter, but honestly, that was the only thing that wasn't perfect. 5 STARS! So glad I made it back and can't wait to come again! read more

We got takeout from 185; Put in an order on their website and drove down to pick it up. Location (4/5): located in a residential area, it's a cute house restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating options. Parking lot is on the smaller side but it's relatively decent parking. Service (3/5): it was hard to know where to pickup the food when I walked in. There is a counter in the back by the kitchen where you pay, but there was a group of people milling around the front door, and nobody to direct us or greet us. When I finally walked up the counter, nobody even glanced my way. When someone finally glanced my way and asked me what I needed, it was with the sourest expression. Everyone has bad days, but overall I did not get the warm and fuzzies from any of the staff as I watched and waited for half an hour by the door. Ambiance (5/5): the vibe is cute, with assorted dining tables and chairs for the inside, and a cute spacious patio on the outside. It's not huge, but it isn't cramped either. Did not use the bathroom but I did notice a small hallway with that looked like a womens and mens. They have a couple of highchairs for little patrons. Food (5/5): we got the brisket breakfast burrito with jam, and it was on point. More eggs than brisket, but everything was cooked and seasoned well. French toast was great. The flavor totally lives up to the reputation! We drove almost an hour to check this spot out after patiently waiting months to find time to make it. Once I saw them featured on the Yelp Top 100, I knew it was going to be great so added it to my must-try list. We came on a Saturday around 11am, which we were a bit nervous about. Luckily, it wasn't insanely busy and we were sat immediately. Ambiance is quaint and homey. When you walk in, you feel like you are at a friends house, which is perfect for the food. I checked in on Yelp and ordered the free iced coffee, which was a nice bonus. I got the French Vanilla, which was very sweet, but yummy. We were a table of 3 and ordered right away. I got the Chicken Skin BLT with grits, my husband got the Brisket Burrito with fries and our friend got the Greek Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. Not sure exactly what happened, but our food didn't come out for an hour. We were deep into conversation for the first 40 minutes or so, so it didn't bother us much, but when it crept closer to that hour mark, we definitely started to feel a bit irritated. Our server never came over to give us an update or let us know what was going on. Luckily, we had a bit of leeway before our next commitment, but did have to rush through our meals a bit more than we would have liked due to the wait. On the bright side, the meals were delicious. Our favorite was the brisket burrito, followed closely by the Chicken Skin BLT. The burrito didn't look like much when it hit the table, but it was packed with flavor. That blackberry sauce was incredible. I really enjoyed the crispy chicken skin, which was such a unique, but great addition to a traditional BLT. Grits were flavorful, as well. The side salad was pretty odd, but we didn't know exactly what to expect since it didn't describe a side salad on the menu. Overall, delicious meal. I am soooo glad I found this spot! it is in Poquoson, however, very close to Hampton. It's a very small building, however, it also has a small patio around the side. The parking lot isn't that big, but there is also street parking. We ended up sitting outside, which today was a perfect day to do so. There was no wait, however, I may have had to wait if I wanted to sit inside. it's very cozy inside and outside and has a family/home feel. The food, service, and atmosphere was everything that I needed it to be. I got the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit which was good! When I return, I may ask for a little less butter, as it was a little messy to eat. The "Smashfries" were very good as well! My friend had a sampler of many items to include the chicken, brisket, eggs, potatoes, and grits. She really enjoyed her food as well. It has been on my Yelp radar for quite a while and most recently landed on the Top 25 list of best restaurants in Coastal Virginia at #5. Reviews have been fairly positive. The question remains: does 185 live up to the hype? Once we entered, we were quickly seated. It's a small place rested in a residential neighborhood. Not a whole lot of tables so be aware of bringing groups at certain times. Along with having fresh hot coffee, I ordered the Country Sausage scramble, which consists of sausage, peppers, onions and cheese along with their homemade hash browns, otherwise known as smash-browns. Truly delicious. Fresh out the kitchen and all homemade....there's nothing more to add here. We got there early as this place fills up quickly. The dining room is small but the service is quick and friendly. Their home fries are a work of art, warm and loaded with flavor. Portions are huge so bring your appetite or a doggy bag. Almost every breakfast item includes eggs which can be a barrier for those who are sensitive but they are willing to make adjustments and accommodations. I had the biscuits and gravy and had two sausage Pattie's substitutes for the eggs. The gravy is a winner featuring both sausage and bacon. And the dish is topped with lots of crumbled bacon and shredded cheese. Everyone at the table was pleased. Read another post that mentioned reservations...they don't take them but they serve food pretty quickly so it moves fast. When I see a place average 5 stars and most of the reviews are amazing, it makes me want to try it out, and I'm so glad we did as this place is worth the 5 star review! First off service was excellent. It's not a large place and even though they do offer outdoor seating it was still a little bit chilly for us to sit outside to eat bit we did wait outside for just about 5 minutes in the adorable patio area. It would be nice to sit outside when it gets a bit warmer. The hostess was sweet and came and got us as soon as our table was ready, and the nice sweet service continued with our server. The coffee was good, nice and strong but not too strong where it has that bitter taste, so that is always good bc I love my coffee. The food was delicious! I had the shrimp and grits and it was just as good as shrimp and grits I had in New Orleans! If I could just drink the delicious sauce I would! The hangover breakfast plate included one of the best sausage gravy over biscuits I have tried and I am picky about sausage gravy with your choice of eggs and smash browns. The only thing I would have wanted differently was I like my smash browns cooked a little longer to make them more crispy but that is just a personal preference! We showed up around 830am, we're seated around 845am. It took some time for our food to arrive but worth the wait. Coffee was pretty good! I added creamer and sugar and made it just the way I liked. The buiscut was PHENOMENAL. I told my husband I could eat 30 of those things lol the bacon was crispy, and the has browns just right. Very small space, but they worked well together as a team to get people seated quickly. The other patrons were so friendly, I overheard that a table had paid for two officers meals. I love that!
