Stopped by last evening and as usual things were out of sync. No server at the front, cash register not working only kiosk. Cooks taking food orders, security taking out trash. Waited over an hour for wings and potato skins but you gotta give it to them everyone pitches in. Bouncer checked on my order 3 times and bagged it up for me. One of the few places that has crispy hot wings and not all wet. Potato skins sat too long and got mushy but tasted okay. To my shock I ordered a dry Vodka martini and it was perfect which never happens on the Peninsula. They gave me a lemon twist for the glass rind nice big thick olives on fancy toothpicks and a very nice martini glass not just any Ole glass and it tasted like a martini and not spiked water. Hubby and I came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch before we head back home after a weekend away. The place was empty. The lady was super welcoming and told us to have a seat. I ordered the crabcake sandwich with onion rings and hubby ordered the brisket hash with eggs. My sandwich was delicious. The only things that kind of threw me off was that it was fried instead of broiled. To be honest, I wouldn't have ordered this only because I do not eat fried food. It was still very good. Hubby really enjoyed his brisket hash and eggs. The food was plated very pretty also. Last weekend, Sophia and I headed here for lunch for Newport News Restaurant week. This here is well-known in the area for breakfast and lunch dishes so we decided to check it out for ourselves. When we got settled, we were ready to place our order, but there was a surprise. They didn't have any of ingredients handy for the selected dishes due to a misunderstanding as to when the specials were ending. At first, we were gonna leave since none of the dishes were available. But with us a bit hungry, we decided to stay. We decided to just be simple and order their homestyle cheeseburgers. I ordered it with the usual veggies with provolone cheese and mustard with a side of fries. I gotta admit this was very delicious. The patty was well cooked and veggies were plenty. The slight negative was the fries weren't seasoned but tasted good. You can't go wrong with ketchup by your side. Even though we were bummed by no NNRW meals available, this made up for it big time. This hole in the wall bar and grill is so freaking good the actual midtown eats part up front reminds me of the Chinese take out places very small and just simple But the food is amazing. We chose to sit on the bar side which offers the same menu but a totally different atmosphere Pool tables tvs and bar jokes We tried the nawalins burger which had Cajun shrimp on the burger it's was so so good the Philly cheese here is as close to Philadelphia phillys as can get so delicious And these weird bbq cheddar balls the bar tender recommended. Now these were mind blowing they had pulled pork inside and had a perfect crunch but the best part was the BLUEBERRY yes BLUEBERRY barbecue sauce served with them as a dipping sauce The waitress told us it is house made and her favorite Also to mention she was amazing so funny and kept up conversation with us all night She even gave me a sample of the lucky charms ipa I saw they had on tap. :) read more

Ordered and chose to pay before getting seated. Great hometown atmosphere and really good food! Husband had the cheesiest omelette with sausage, mushrooms and onions and said it was tops! My first time ordering from here. I got the Brisket Platter and the Cheese Curds. The brisket was sliced thin and was very fatty. I've never had this type of brisket before I will say the meat was tender and the bbq sauce has a nice flavor. The coleslaw was a bit bland and the hushpuppies were ok. First time trying this from here and I enjoyed it! I wanted a late dinner, so I searched for restaurants that was in the late evening. This restaurant stays open until 1:10am which is great for late night cravings. My meal was freshly made and the food was nice, hot and plump. The tartare sauce was creamy too. We had lunch today at Midtown Eats and were very disappointed. I ordered the smoked brisket platter and my husband ordered the brisket Reuben. My brisket consisted of 2 fatty slices which were sliced along the grain. Any chef or cook should know to slice against the grain or the meat is a long tough string . The bbq sauce on top did the flavor no favors. And the brisket Reuben had very little brisket. Our bill came to $51.00. The server took off $3 because she misinformed me about the up charge for the side of Mac n cheese, which was the best part of the meal. The chips that came in with it on the side were really good. My husband got Mac and cheese on the side, he was very pleased. Food was amazing so they get a 5 star. It is a bar and has a self order kiosk to order. It doesn't seem like a good neighborhood. A little sketchy like but had no issues. They have a bouncer at the door so no kids or underage allowed unless to pick up food and leave. read more

Great little spot on J Clyde. A little different, really good food, fantastic burgers. Service has always been good, except one evening I stopped by and there was no wait staff and was asked to place my own order at a kiosk they had set up at a table by the door. I do not do self checkout at grocery store and I'm not doing this either. Also there's a bar and pool room attached, on occasion if you sitting in the wrong spot you'll get a small blast of ashtray order when someone comes and goes out the door to that area because it doesn't have it's own entrance from outside. Great place for a fun time with friends. It's a two-sided venue. Entertainment on one side and a nice indoor and outdoor eating area. Smoking allowed on the entertainment side. Staff is friendly. I was so excited to try the Nawlins Burger and onion rings... it was okay... it would have been GREAT if the meat was seasoned. My friend ordered the shrimp and bacon Mac and cheese... Been here twice and the food has been great both times. My first visit I got the tuna bites appetizer, and the rueben with fries. My coworker enjoyed the fish and chips with hush puppies. My second trip I got the shrimp PO boy with collard greens. Everything was great about this sandwich, the fried jumbo shrimp, the remoulade and even the bread was really good. After our original plans for brunch was canceled, my girlfriend and I did a quick google search for places near us. That's when Midtown Eats popped up. After checking out the menu we decided to swing my. Now we needed up kind of disappointed because the menu we saw online was there regular menu and not the brunch, so ultimately a more limited menu. But after debating over mimosas if we wanted to try their food or head up we decided to give it a try. Boyyyyyyy I was not disappointed! My girl orders the N'awlin Burger and I tried the Tex Mex Breakfast Bowl. Both was absolutely delicious and beyond flavorful. Not only that but you get a great portion for your money! I know if the brunch is banging, then the actual menu is to die for. Cannot wait to come back and try the brisket, Mac, and greens! Just wanted to do an update since they switched locations to the building where Sandbar is. It is definitely easier to spot with a bigger sign than its previous location in a quiet shopping center. There are more booths to dine now. I have visited the new location twice now and the restaurant is never crowded with people like before. I will have to agree with other Yelpers who commented it kind of smells like stale cigarette smoke. I believe it is because the bar is closed off in the back. There always seems to be more people visiting Sandbar than actually dining at the restaurant. The food is still amazing though and I enjoy that there is a variety of food listed on the menu. I LOVE that the kids menu is only $4 and comes with a cookie. My son thoroughly enjoys it. All in all, enjoyable food still but I kind of miss the small intimate feel of the last place. It was busier but it gave off a tight knit family vibe. read more
