Cool spot with outdoor upper deck seating. I don't know how people who can't climb stairs get up here, so be prepared if that's you or someone you love. My only thing was the top part of the deck should all be high tops, so you can actually see over the railing. It was difficult to see the beautiful water and tunnel construction on the upper deck with the low tables. I got the salad, and it was nice portion. The Deadrise is my go to in Hampton for a quick bite of authentic seafood. They have lots of options, great service, and a beautiful view. This past weekend, I visited, and it happened to be Restaurant Week. My go-to meal is their crab cake sandwich and fries, but I ventured out and tried their special: New England Clam Chowder and Seafood Mac and Cheese. The chowder was okay. The clams were a little chewy and it lacked flavor; needed a few more dashes of salt at the least. The seafood Mac and Cheese had potential. The crab meat on top looked enticing. The noodles were cooked to perfection. But the flavor was also lacking. It was not cheesy enough to call a Mac and cheese and again needed more salt and/or other seasonings. There also wasn't much seafood to boast about. Maybe a scallop or 2, a very small quantity of shrimp....the crab meat and roll were the highlight. 3 STARS (for this visit). The service was GREAT! The Deadrise is a laid-back bar and restaurant near Fort Monroe on the water. Food is excellent and service is fun, friendly, and efficient. We started with an order of the She Crab Soup, which was large enough for us to share and was filled with crab and delicious! For entrees, we enjoyed the fish tacos, which were made of grilled mahi mahi today, and the salmon avocado BLT with crispy fries. Both meals were nicely seasoned. The BLT came in a hoagie type of bun, which was a little too much bread for me so I ate it as an open-faced sandwich, consuming only the top layer of the bun, which contained the avocado spread on it. It was not very busy, but to be expected with it being later in the evening. The service was not too bad, but was not phenomenal either. We ordered our food and it did seem we had to wait a while for our food, Once we got it and dug in, the food was delicious! I got the stuffed flounder, one got the fish sandwich, another got the seafood nachos, and the other got the shrimp basket. I was excited to visit Hampton for a conference because I missed all the small seafood restaurants I remembered from my youth in the Norfolk area. Of course those restaurants are long gone, but new ones have taken their place. I found the The Deadrise on Yelp and convinced a couple of friends to go there with me on a Tuesday night. It is not the easiest place to get to, but we thought it was well worth the trip. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but feels cozy and friendly. We sat outside on the deck and had a great view of the water. Drinks were inexpensive but satisfying, and our meals were really good. I love crab cakes and they did a great job on them. Sides were good too. Our server was friendly and attentive. We went back to the hotel very happy with our Deadrise dinner! I told a bunch of friends about The Deadrise, and went back a second time with another friend on Friday evening. We figured it would be busier, and it definitely was. The parking lot was full and we ended up parking a block away, no big deal. There was a long wait for a table so we sat at the bar. The bartender was really fun to talk to, and all was well until our meal came. Mine was fine, but to my embarrassment, my friend's was cold inside. They reheated it, and he enjoyed it, but still... While we were eating, a group of six of our friends who I had recommended The Deadrise to arrived. Probably not the best idea on their part to come with a big group to a small restaurant that doesn't take reservations on a Friday night! They had a very long wait, and were just getting seated when we were leaving. Unfortunately they had a similar experience with cold food, and overall they were disappointed. But I have to tell you, I loved the place. Not pretentious in any way, good drinks, reasonably priced, nice views, and great crab cakes. Wonderful dinner on a Friday evening! Delightful and friendly service with our waitress very willing to make suggestion from the menu and always bringing what we needed with a smile! The clam chowder was great - only complaint is that it came out with bread rather than oyster crackers - yet still tasty! It's a hidden gem. If you are checking out Fort Monroe and want great seafood, give this place a shot. It's on the pier and looks a little run down from the outside. I think it is just a little weathered. But it's well worth it. The place is small, and there is seating outside when the weather is nice. It's right off the water so that it can get windy. The staff is fantastic, and the food is excellent. Go to the fort, explore, take a walk on the beach, and when you are done, get the fried shrimp. She crab soup is fantastic; it's loaded with crab, just a little spicy, and so good! I have a slight problem with the salmon sandwich. The bread is too small. They pile on the fish; with the extras, it's just too much to eat like a sandwich. What they should do is punt the bread and make it a salad. Where do I begin? The Bluff is this: great food, excellent service, and a great environment! The menu's focus is seafood; there are burgers and steaks, and I'm sure they are good, but get the seafood. It's fresh, elegantly prepared and served and old so good! We went off-season for seafood, and it was still fresh. I'm not sure if it's local catch, but I've passed this place many times while working out, and I always see it being brought in daily, leading me to believe it's fresh. Service is the best next to none; servers made menu suggestions, informed us of the specials, and kept the drinks filled. I always recommend the specials because these are not regular menu options; they are seasonal, I guess. The environment is looking over the Elizabeth River toward the naval base. Plenty of outdoor seating so you can enjoy the view. Indoor seating is about 15 tables, so consider sitting outside. There is a full bar and a TV for us sports enthusiasts; it makes a great place to watch a game. The portions are significant for the price, so be prepared to take some with you. I want to start by making it clear that my low rating is entirely related to the rudeness of the restaurant management towards another customer. But first my review. This was my first time to deadrise. The restaurant location is on the second floor of a nondescript Building at Fort monroe. If you're looking for a place with "character", this is it. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and though we chose to sit indoors, the outdoor view was spectacular, overlooking the marina. They had a number of specials posted on a chalk board, and though they specialize in seafood, my wife got the deadrise hamburger. I wanted the blackened Cobia, they were out, so I got the blackened Mahi-Mahi. Though it took a bit longer than normal for our meals, both were hot and flavorful when they came out. The Mahi-mahi in particular had lots of black beans and rice on one side and green beans and carrots on the other but I did not taste any blackening seasoning. It just tasted grilled. Even so, it was tasty. My wife thought the hamburger was a bit undercooked - she asked for it to be cooked medium - but she said it was good and juicy. If my review stopped there, I probably give them four stars. However there was more. Sitting at the table next to us was two older gentleman who were enjoying the long leisurely meal the whole time we were there. At some point, while we were eating, we overheard one of the two gentlemen tell the waitress she had failed to give him his credit card back. There in ensued a calm 10 to 15 minute back and forth discussion between them and the waitress, with both looking for the card and not finding it. The gentleman got up and looked all around the table and in his wallet. Both remained calm and polite, but the waitress finally started saying there was nothing else she could do. We watched as the older gentleman got up and asked to speak to a manager. One of the waitresses pointed at a person who was at the drink station which was right on the other side of our table. He walked over to speak with her. She immediately seemed agitated and defensive. I was pretty surprised at her reaction since the customer was so calm about it. I didnt see what happened next, but when we received our bill a few minutes later, I noticed that the holder that they bring your bill in had a slot for your credit card. But the slot in their folder did not have a bottom to it. When I put my card in the slot, it disappeared down inside the holder. It occurred to me that the same thing may have happened to the older gentleman's card. I got up and went over to share that information with the Manager. She was immediately defensive which surprised me. I explained that I was just an onlooker and was trying to help. As we spoke, another waitress walked up and pointedly told me that they had looked through all the holders three times. I explained that I had actually watched them look for it. They just opened and closed each holder. I repeated my observation that the holder's slots did not have bottoms in them, and that the card could be pushed down inside it. Just opening the holder might not be enough. At this point, I told the manager that she seemed a bit rude when she spoke to the older gentleman. She said the man had gotten in her face and she didn't appreciate that. Now the older gentleman and his friend had been sitting at the table on one side of us. The drink station was directly on the other side of us. Both locations were within 5 ft of our table. We could easily see that he had NOT gotten in her face or had been anything but polite to her. I finally told her I was just trying to help by suggesting where the card might be and then we left. Its ironic that our waitress was so nice but her boss was so rude. Though I liked the Deadrise and love the rustic location, unfortunately I will not be back, entirely because of their management. read more

What the heck happened?? This has always been our go to place when out of town guests are here. Haven't been in several months. Went yesterday and it was totally different experience! We should have known it had gone down hill when we arrived and it was so few customers. I have been many times of the day and they are always busy, not anymore. I always get the margarita because it's sooo good. Had a foam on the top and tasted weird. Should have sent it back. Service was not good. Server hardly checked on us. Granddaughter ask for melted butter for her shrimp but never got it. I was picking bones out of my fried flounder. That has never happened! Oh well, I won't be back. Sailed over from Norfolk and had a bite at the Deadrise. OMG! The grilled fish tacos were some of the best I've ever had! Topped it all off with a delicious key lime pie. So good! My husband and I stopped in at The Deadrise for lunch around 1 pm on a Tuesday. We sat outside with our dog. The place had a steady stream of customers going in and out but wasn't busy. The service was quick, friendly, and professional. He ordered a beer and I ordered a white wine, which came out promptly. Both were cold and refreshing. We started with a bowl of she-crab soup to share, and it came out piping hot with plenty of crab. Some fresh green garnish would have taken it to the next level, but we loved it as is. He gave it an 8 out of 10, saying it needed a bit more salt, but I thought it was perfect. It came with warm bread and butter--I even dipped some bread in the soup for a dog treat and she approved! He ordered the catfish jambalaya from the chalkboard menu, and I chose the seafood basket with fried oysters and clam strips, served with fries, hush puppies, and slaw. The food came out quickly and piping hot. The jambalaya, which had plenty of catfish, shrimp and sausage, he said, could have used a little more seasoning, some okra would have thickened the broth more to his liking, and the celery pieces were cut a bit large, but overall, it was tasty with some added salt and hot sauce. He used the bread from the she-crab soup to soak up the broth. He ended up taking half of it home. The fried clams were tender, juicy, perfectly cooked and plentiful. Our dog enjoyed a few of those as well. The oysters were briny, well-seasoned, and perfectly executed--honestly, the best fried oysters I've had for lunch in Tidewater! And there were at least 10 oysters, maybe more. I couldn't tell because he kept eating my oysters! The fries were crispy and just needed a touch of salt and pepper. The slaw and hush puppies were good, and the basket came with both tartar and cocktail sauce. This was more food than I could eat even after sharing with the husband and the dog. Sitting outside was a little breezy on a 72°F afternoon, but the delicious food kept us warm, and we enjoyed the view. We'll definitely be back on a warmer day to sit outside again. We ordered both the calamari and the clam strip appetizers. Both came with a mayo like dip that went surprisingly well with both. The calamari was good and we enjoyed them but the clams were FANTASTIC. The waitress said they were locally sourced. I believe it. They rivaled the best clam strips I've ever had and those were in Maine. My husband ordered a burger and fries. It was cooked a perfect medium well per his request and the fries were good. He wolfed it all down. I ordered the fried shrimp basket that came with several jumbo shrimp, fries, two huge hush puppies and a small side of cole slaw. All were DELICIOUS. My preference is for slightly less breading on my shrimp but i'm just picky like that and they were perfectly cooked and yummy. The cole slaw was also very good which surprised me as I'm also very picky about cole slaw. But the star of that platter was the hush puppies. They were OMG delicious. Not dense, a bit oniony, cooked pecfectly and just scrumptious. My cocktail was their Pian Killer which was very nice. Our server didn't mention dessert. We didn't have room for any but I saw Key Lime Cheesecake on a specials board as I was leaving the bathroom. If I'd known they had that prior to paying our check, I'd have gotten a slice to go. The only downside, and why we won't be back soon, is that my husband has mobility issues and the many steps up to the dining area were very difficult for him. It would be an absolute no for anyone wheelchair bound as their elevator has apparently been broken for 2 years! (Is that even legal?) Our server said they hope to get it repaired this summer. I'm not sure I believe that. We could see it on the outside of the building in the back and it looked pretty rough. I'd bet it needs to be replaced, not repaired, and if the owner hasn't been able to save the money to do that in 2 years, my guess is they won't which is sad. I love the Deadrise...the casual nautical atmosphere, the view, the food... all above average. I normally go for lunch but this trip was early on a Monday evening; we beat the crowd, there was plenty parking and our pick of tables. At the top of the stairs there is an outdoor dining area with a great view of the river and the marina. You enter the restaurant thru the deck area, be advised that the stairs are steep and there seems to be a couple more than usual. We ordered a crab dip appetizer. You can choose between chips or crackers - the crackers were far better with the dip. It was delicious and pretty filling on its own. My entree was a crab cake sandwich. It was "market priced" and was an even $20 on this night in March 2024. Soooo, I do believe it was the best darn crab cake sandwich I've ever had and I've had quite a few over the years! Very little if no filler, crispy on the outside, filled the bun and very flavorful. I would go back just to have another one but there's loads of good choices on the menu, I've also ordered the grilled tuna steak sandwich and the fish tacos on past visits - both outstanding. Lastly, I did not reflect this in my rating and even hesitate to mention it because it can literally happen anywhere but I discovered a few days later that I was overcharged. I paid with credit card and my debit was more than the receipt I signed. Almost doubled. It's not going to break me, nothing I can do about it at this stage but consequently I'll either be paying with cash and counting my change before I walk out or taking a picture of my signed credit receipt so I can document the correct charge everywhere I go from here forward. The food was good. I ordered the salmon, bacon and avocado sandwich. My husband ordered the chicken sandwich which was also tasty. Bring your walking shoes for the stairs. You'll need them to get to the restaurant. There's a flight which looked difficult for a few elderly guests. The service was a 3 out of 5. It was just OK. The waitress seemed hurried, not friendly and didn't communicate with us. We also had to ask for silverware after our food was delivered. The ambiance outdoors was nice as it overlooks the water. Inside is a bit small, however it's comfortable. The drinks are weak with way too much ice and too expensive for what you get. I ordered the deadrise lemonade with vodka. I'm not a heavy drinker but this drink was lemonade and ice. I'm still not certain if they added the vodka. My husband and I went to this restaurant this evening because he used to live here and it was great before. It was he, I and our trained service dog. It was 41 degree outside and we were told we had to sit outside because we had a dog with us. This was after the hostess seeing his vest and us telling her it was a service dog. We refused to sit outside and asked to speak to the manager once we were seated. The manager tried to tell us it was because the person was young. No ma'am that is lack of training on managements part. We started to leave but decided since this was so good before we would stay. Paid $86 for overcooked tasteless food.
