Country Fried Steak & Eggs
Ryan W.

Laura's Rise and Shine is the kind of place you almost don't want to tell people about--because it's such a hidden gem that you want to keep it all to yourself. Tucked into the Buckroe Shopping Center, this little diner is pure comfort from the moment you walk through the door. The space is tiny, cozy, and full of character. The walls are covered in fun little signs that give it that lived-in, hometown feel. The vibe is ultra-casual, and the staff couldn't be more welcoming. The waitresses greet you like family and bring that unmistakable Southern charm that makes you feel like you belong--even if it's your first visit. They only serve breakfast and lunch, and they do it right. My go-to is the country fried steak breakfast--seriously, it's soooooo good. Crispy, savory, smothered in gravy, and served up with all the fixins. You won't leave hungry. Just a heads-up: this is a cash-only spot, and you won't find alcohol on the menu--just strong coffee and good company. It's a classic greasy spoon diner in the best way possible, and every town needs a place like this. When I'm in the mood for a hearty breakfast, this is where I'm headed, no question. If you're local--or even just passing through--you owe it to yourself to stop by and see what makes this place such a beloved staple.

Outstanding food and service. Meals arrived quickly and hot. Reasonably priced. Quaint little hole in the wall diner. We will definitely be back. Good place to know about, close to the VA Medical Center. I'm

The environment was a bit older than I expected but cute for the price of the food. Some of the food was frozen or canned you can taste the high blood pressure but it was great! Especially if you want something simple/basic/tasteful all in one. The waitress was awesome very nice.

Pancake Combo #2 I think?

Super quick service yet the food was pretty yummy and the waitress was super nice ! Would definitely recommend if you like diner style breakfast

Downing Hampton has a hole in the wall, found in a strip mall. But don't let that deceive you! This place has a really dynamic breakfast going for it. My companion had his regular eggs, a pancake or French toast but this time he had a pancake, grits, and bacon or sausage. Me, I have to try Virginia ham wherever I go because, well, I'm visiting Virginia. Got a try ham everywhere I mean for heaven sake I'm in the Smithfield backyard! Hands-down this restaurant had the best grits in Virginia that I tried and I tried grits everywhere I went for breakfast over the past two weeks. Let me qualify that and say this restaurant had the best grits in a privately owned restaurant as opposed to a hotel; there was one other place competing for my top notch grits cookery but it was a hotel chain. I did stop the waitress and ask her what the secret was or how they did it, and she said that she didn't know, it was the cook who did it and it was surprising because everybody comments how great the grits are, and he doesn't even really eat them. Whatever he's doing, he's doing it fantastically! The biscuit was light and fluffy they brought me honey And butter, the eggs were perfect, and I had Virginia ham. Need I say more? It was just a good awesome delicious feeling breakfast. No wonder I gained 6 pounds in two weeks. Thank you Virginia!

Great little gem in Buckroe. Food has great flavor and portions are generous. Definitely recommend if you love the home cooked vibe. Great atmosphere and service. Definitely will order from here again.

Our favorite breakfast place in the area. Everything that we've eaten here in our three years in the area has been excellent. The coffee is good too. Friendly and attentive staff.

I was craving standard breakfast fare and, seeing the positive reviews, we decided to come here. Upon entering we noticed the lovely decor and quaintness of an old school diner. I ordered the 2 eggs with sausage, grits and toast, and also ordered home fries. My goodness the food hit the spot and oh boy did I love those grits. Our waitress did seem robotic but it was very busy and she did a good job getting us our food quickly and without any issues. For me it was those grits that stood out and had quite the impact on my Yankee palate. In summary, tasty food that hit the spot and fully satisfied my hunger, very good and efficient service by our waitress in spite of being busy, and an establishment with charming decor to boot...that's 5 stars for me

This plays is a find, good food served hot and fresh. This is not your over the top corporate breakfast diner, but that good a ole southern diner you would pice for a fairly priced breakfast any day of the week, less than any fast food breakfast in town. Did I mention everything was great hot and filled with southern flavor.

The service is quick, and the food is good for the price it's offered at. Be sure to bring cash, as it's a cash-only establishment.

She recommended the turkey wings, so I went with that. I like my turkey wings well done and nicely browned, and I specifically requested the brownest ones in the batch. She told me they had just come out and were well done. When I got home, only the top wing was browned--the one underneath wasn't--which was frustrating since I made a very specific request. She also seemed to have a slight attitude about the request, which didn't help. The turkey wings themselves were just okay. The cabbage could've used more seasoning, but the white rice and gravy were good. Unfortunately, the cornbread that was supposed to come with the meal was missing. I would try this place again, but I'd likely order one of the other items I was interested in--not the turkey wings.

The house salad came with cheese but I asked for no cheese. Asked for salad dressing, but no dressing. Did receive the cole slaw and cornbread. They were OK. The driver was also frustrated because they were told I was receiving a substitute (there was none) so it was a disappointing order, and it took over an hour to arrive. And that I would be refunded. I had been monitoring the app because the driver said they tried to contact me but I didn't receive any communication. Please, Southern Comfort, do better.

They were hired to cater our wedding that was originally scheduled in November, but we had to postpone the wedding due to the world's recent COVID pandemic. We had already paid $1000 deposit, and we didn't want to lose that. They offered to allow us up to 1 year, to use the deposit. So, we decided that we would use them for my bridal shower, which was for 20 guest. Keep in mind that they were perfectly fine with the date change; but all of a sudden, I was told, via phone conversation, that there was a $250 tasting fee since we cancelled the wedding and changed to a different date. No where in the contract did it state there would be a $250 fee for tasting if there is a cancellation or date change. Let's keep in mind contract was NOT cancelled, as they did provide a service, on 10/17/2020. So, again why were we charged a tasting fee? Didn't want to make a big fuss about it, so I asked for an itemized receipt for the items listed below, however, I was provided with a new, and modified contract that showed these items: 20 servings of Bang Bang Shrimp 1 pan of Meatballs 40 assorted pieces of fried chicken 1 pan of Sweet Potato Soufflé 1 pan of Mac and Cheese 20 servings of pasta salad Fruit Tray Veggie Tray Fee Schedule Service Full Package Service ...... $750.00 Tax 13.5%........................................ 101.25 Gratuity 15 % ............................. Total........................................ $850.25 Now, the food...the chicken was not fresh, it had obviously be reheated, dry, no seasoning, looked as if it was fried in old grease with black specks, it was so bad that we threw away 30 pieces. The mac and cheese was dry, cheese only at the top, and not throughout. I say, if you can't successfully make these staples, then there is no need to be a soul food business. Ok, then there was the Bang Bang shrimp, mushy and was garnished with red cabbage and lemons...hmmm. Anyway, the fruit and veggie tray was ok. We did put the fruit tray on a nicer plater. Actually, we put everything on a nice platter, as I will not serve out of tin pans like they do a BBQ's. Meatballs, were just ok. The pasta salad was dry, and had to add to it to make it taste like something. I say all of this to say, we threw $1000 in the trash. It amazes me how people portray to run a successful business with excellent customer service once they get your money. All the other vendors worked with my fiance and I, and I really thought Ms. Mary's would have too. Well, I guess they thought they did by allowing us to use our deposit for my bridal shower, and I do appreciate that, but to provide us with a product that wasn't of quality or freshness was unacceptable.

I know the menu like the back of my hand--and there are certain things I always look forward to. Let me tell you... the baked chicken? So soft, juicy, and tender. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, just how I like it. When the roast beef is sliced nice and thin? Baby, it melts in your mouth. That crab-stuffed fish? Moist, tender, and packed with flavor. I love it! My mama and my sister always go for the beef liver--they say it hits every time. The spoon bread is so good and soft, and don't get me started on the dinner rolls--I could eat a tray of those by themselves. I also love the carrot soufflé (just sweet and smooth), and the broccoli casserole is something I'll always grab if I see it. I'll take mashed potatoes or rice with just about any meat, and the cabbage is good too--but I like to add a little butter to mine.
