I tried numerous hair salons on Newbury Street in the past, and finally found the salon that I would go regularly. It is Stilisti. Pamela is amazing. I am an Asian and unlike some Asians, my hair is quite thick. Even many Asian hair stylists (including Japanese hair stylists) hardly ever handling my hair in a way I like. When I visited Pam for the first time, I brought a picture with me and showed it to her. I told her that I understood it wouldn't be easy to handle my hair. The result was great. She gave me the look I wanted. Not only I liked my new hair cut, but also my husband told me that was the best hair cut I've ever had! Another great thing about Pam's hair cut is that it flows nicely when I let it just grow. read more

I only came to Stilisti to see Andrew Light, who is a friend of mine. I had no idea the salon would be as wonderful as Andrew is! It's true that he is a standout there. He loves what he does and has a rare talent for color. I've got wavy and processed hair that's sustained some damage now that I'm in my mid-thirties and have been covering my grey regularly. But Andrew managed to turn my hair around after just a couple of visits. He made my faded highlights look gorgeous after adding some perfectly placed chocolate lowlights-- an idea no stylist has ever suggested to me. He nailed the cut, too, and now I have long layers that hang with precision instead of frizziness. He added a glaze as well, and now I have amazing shine. The clients in the other chairs were staring at me last time I was there and one asked her stylist whether she could make her hair look as shiny as mine! The products there are wonderful, too. I've long been a fan of Davines since I started using using the line after going to Shag. Andrew also suggested Minardii to me last time I was there and I've fallen in love with her line. But I recommend a regular glaze if you want to keep things really healthy and shiny-looking. My last few visits also included pedicures from Bella, who is a whiz. She's cash only and pedicures cost about $45, but my last three have each lasted 3 weeks or more. She's incredible, and her taste is excellent. I recently learned that they're offering brow waxes, too, so just ask if you want to include one with your hair service. One note: they recently started accepting appointments from their website. Call for a login name if you want to start using that service. It's a little clunky but overall it works just fine. read more

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. No, seriously. I am a compulsive colorer, but I'm fairly certain Megan Kelley has converted me to the light side. After meeting Megan for a consultation about a month and a half ago, I left confused and uncertain of what I wanted. Although she listened to my ideas and made suggestions I left uncertain and without booking an appointment because I wasn't in sure about what I wanted. Usually I would've decided on an impulse but Megan actually suggested I take time to consider what I really want and didn't push me to book. Instead she gave me her email and said contact her when I've decided or with questions. Flash forward 6 weeks. I stroll back into Stilisti yesterday with the intent to lighten. Megan's initial suggestions resonated with me and I decided to take the plunge and get a full highlight. Upon walking into the air conditioned bliss on a second story brownstone on Newbury, I was greeted by a cheerful receptionist who kindly informed me I was a half hour early. She offered to see if the manicurist was available to fill the time gap, but I turned her down and instead took her up on her offer for a iced cold glass of tea. Stilisti stocks a little bar area full of beverages and sweet snacks! A perfect way to stave off hunger for long hair hauls such as a full highlight. As soon as Megan finished up with her previous client, she greeted me, remembered our entire conversation from our initial consultation, and got right to mixing up my color. We chatted about everything-school to beauty. Megan is a really interesting person to talk to, making the time fly by. Soon thereafter I was led back to the couches where I waited for my color to set. Then to the sink where an assistant washed my hair and gave me an incredible hair massage. After I was given the option of blow drying myself or having an assistant do it. I chose to do it myself because I wasn't going anywhere later that evening but before being handed the hair dryer, the assistant combed me out and put product in my hair. I then dried my hair and was set to go. The color came out perfect. It truly exceeded my expectations and was worth every penny. read more

Although I didn't go to the salon, I had my hair done for an event by Andrew Light and LOVED the style. I have very straight and boring shoulderish length hair and wanted fun wavy curls, like the celebs and he hit the nail right on the head. Best of all, it stayed all night and into the next day. This has never happened! If you need a good style, he did an excellent job! He also did a great job with another model whose hair was long and straight like mine. He was able to give it body and an awesome do that looked like a perfect bridal style. I should add that I recently asked someone at James Joseph to give me the exact same style and it came out awesome and looking like Shirley temple. James Joseph is a waste of money unless you can afford the most expensive stylist. read more

Long story short, 7 months ago my hair was tragically dyed a terrible color and I had to go to another stylist to bleach it out, and then 2 months later tone it to a more acceptable color. Fast forward to November, and the "fixed" hair was faded, fried, and my roots were honestly horrifying. I've tried a few other Newbury salons and have gotten weird vibes (some rude comments about long hair, one place making me blow dry it myself, etc), but the receptionist here listened to my horror story and recommended Jamie. She was able to schedule me for the next week, and I am so thrilled with what she did. This was the first time in 7 months I have been truly happy with my hair after leaving a salon. I had been going to multiple different stylists so my hair had a lot of different foil styles and colors. Even though Ali really didn't have time she did a full color correction on me. I've always had very long hair and HATED when stylists cut off more than I wanted, but Jamie always always listens to exactly what you want. I've been coming to here for 5 years now, and she does an incredible job making my long thick hair super manageable. Last May, I finally made the leap to get a balayage ... and she was absolutely unreal!! I was concerned about everything growing out naturally, but it's 8 months post-balayage, no touch ups!! He always does a perfect job with my highlights and giving me a haircut so that it still has personality even though it's long and straight. Andrew as a person is charming, friendly, and hilarious. He's supportive of whatever you want to do but also has great ideas and suggestions. He's also very flexible, and can sometimes fit you in even if the online schedule says he's booked. I would probably follow Andrew anywhere (already followed him from Liquid) but Stilisti as a whole is pleasant. I went to see Andrew after reading all of his amazing reviews on Yelp. I have short hair that I have really been working to grow out. I told him that I was growing it out but wanted shape because my hair had not been cut in a while and I had a special occasion to go to this weekend. At first I liked the cut, it looked good from the front, neat because he blow dried it, but when he showed me the back I was really not happy with how it looked: choppy with a ton of layers. Then when I went home and got used to it, I was even more upset with it. He did not give me what I asked for at all. There were extremely short layers all over my hair (I said I was growing it out!) and now I am feeling so set back in terms of growing it long. It is also really high maintenance and does not look good at all when it air dries, which I do often. I really regret getting this cut. I have never paid this much for a haircut and been this upset with it... I will stick with my regular stylist from now on. read more

I hate to update a Review of the Day, but this is serious: you must, and I really do command you to, go to Bella to get your nails done. I was a chronic nail-biter my entire life and this woman has completely changed my life! I went to her because of my general love of Stilisti and she totally exceeded my expectations. I only got a manicure in the first place because I was going on an interview and needed half-way presentable nails. They were too short for Bella to even file down! Instead, she cut my horribly long cuticles and taught me how to care for my nails. She then gave me this amazing nail-strengthening product and told me that if I put this stuff on my nails, I wouldn't bite them. Miraculously, it worked, and I have been bite-free for a proud (and whopping!) 3 and a half months. I don't know exactly what it is about this product (it's not like, one of those garlic-tasting polishes or anything) or what it is about Bella (besides being warm and thoughtful and the best), but my nails have totally transformed. These are the stages of my nails, from the POV of my best friends: (21 years before Bella) "You have E.T. hands" (1 week after Bella) "Oh, you stopped biting your nails!" (1 month after Bella) "Heh heh, you nails are getting longer than mine" (3 months after Bella) "ARE THESE FAKE?! Alright, give me the damn number of that salon." It's also important to mention that although Bella is slightly pricey and I am definitely broke, I can afford her because I only need to get a manicure once every 6 weeks or so because of how well of a job she does. WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL salon. I've been going to see Sally since January. When I first saw her I was dealing with extremely over-processed hair that was a dull color and brittle texture. Over the last few months, she has worked with me to fix both the color and the texture. She is an absolute gem! She listens to all of my nit-picky comments about my hair, remembers what I've said previously, and makes subtle suggestions as far as how to help my hair look better. She also does extra things to enhance my look like using a special lightening cream around my hairline. Whenever she finishes working on me, I gasp because she's done such an amazing job. I literally cannot sing her praises highly enough. The rest of the salon is wonderful. It's a pretty space with fun touches like glass jars of snacks. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they have a wonderful array of products. Having been to several different Newbury salons, I'm used to seeing people who are upset with waits or bad service; I've never seen anyone who isn't pleased with their service at Stilisti. read more

This past experience at Stilisti has been the best yet. The receptionists are friendly and helpful. Andrew is a skilled stylist. Not only did he give me an amazing haircut, but he took the time to talk with me twice during the haircut. Before the cut, he listened to me when I told him how I wanted it cut and why. Then, later, he asked me the specifics of my daily hair routine and gave me tips on how to improve it. He was totally understanding when I told him that I couldn't take his recommendation not to wash my hair daily for the health of my hair. Instead, he worked with me to find the best products to work for my decision to continue to wash my hair daily. When I explained the issues I was having with the products I use no longer working, and he helped me concoct a product cocktail that works better than the old product used to! I have received so many compliments on my new haircut, and it is incredibly easy to style. I also love the jane iredale mascara and eye primer I purchased under the guidance of Kayleigh, who is very sweet and helpful. They are very welcoming when you first come through the door. You fill out some quick paperwork and then are given a tour of the salon. Coffee and Tea. Yes please! I saw Ali and I cannot recommend her enough. She talked through what I wanted and then gave me her opinion on what would be best for my hair. Throughout the process she was very clear that if something sounded too frightening for me we wouldn't do it. I am fairly casual with my hair and was happy to let her do her thing (based on my earlier discussion!). I left the salon feeling great. Very impressed with the receptionist when I told her how weary I was, she asked what kind of style I was thinking of, then told me Stephanie was probably best for me. I just had my first haircut with Ali R and she was really great! She listened to what I wanted and checked in during the haircut to make sure I was satisfied. Also when I asked for product recommendations she recommended products in different price ranges because she said she wanted to find something within my budget. The haircut was great and what was really impressive was her curling job - my hair remained curled all day while still staying soft - I'm so used to hairsprays and gels that make my hair crunchy and wear off quickly. I absolutely LOVE this place! My stylist Elle has seen me go through the extreme awkwardness of my prepubescent and teenage years into someone attempting to be a put together adult. She has really aided me in the process. I started to color my hair about a year and a half ago. I did my first few attempts on my own, from a box, and needless to say the results were absolutely disastrous. I came in for my bimonthly haircut in late May of last year, and Elle took one look at me and asked if I would consider getting my hair colored. I didn't want to pay so much for it, so I declined at that point. Two weeks later, as I was drying my hair, all I could notice was the large chunk of dark brown hair at the top of my head and the EXTREMELY stark line between the brown and "blonde"--aka now orangey blonde-- sections. I called right then and there and made an appointment for a partial foil. I have been extremely happy with the results I've received over the years from both cuts, blowouts, and color. Yes, it is expensive (believe me, at $160 a pop for a partial foil WITHOUT getting it blow dried, I nearly cried when I swiped my card that first time), but I really do think it's worth it. EVERYONE is so sweet and friendly, and not stuck up at all! This is huge for Newbury Street. Elle is fabulous, professional, and very very nice. I highly, highly recommend Stilisti -- and really any stylist there -- to all of my friends looking for a new salon. My manicure was great & shows no signs of chipping! They don't have a huge selection of colors but I don't think most people go here for nails, it's definitely more of a hair salon. I was assigned to Sally for my hair. Love her! She gave me the most ah-mazing scalp massage, and a killer blowout that still looks awesome 3 days later (I know, I'm washing it tonight). Victoria was amazing. I went in for a color and it ended up not being exactly what I had in mind. This was a miscommunication on my behalf. The color was well done, she was great while working and was just really pleasant to be around for 2 hours trapped in a chair. I did not explain what I wanted well enough to her. 100% my fault. When I mentioned that I was expecting something different, she listened and immediately wanted to fix it. I had to leave but we booked time the next day. She was just as fantastic the next day. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this Newbury Street salon is high-end and has all of the amenities of a luxury salon, but without the pretentious attitude. With the pandemic, it's been a long time since I received a cut/color. Upon entering the salon, I was greeted by my stylist with a brief health screening - questions, temperature check and hand sanitizer. Stilisti was spotless as always, and everyone wore a mask at all times. Allison was my stylist, whom I saw for the first time. We briefly discussed color and cut. I mentioned that I wanted to keep the length of my hair, since I was trying to grow it out. Allison did a great job! She took care of my roots and cut. When she was mostly complete, she noticed one strand of hair which did not completely take to the color. No one would have noticed this, but she did and took the time to reapply it. Sally has literally changed my hair life. I have always hated my thin hair and yearned for big beautiful volume and she has really helped me learn how to style and blow dry my thin locks to BIGNESS. She also recommends excellent products. I know people are always skeptical of hairdressers pushing products but I swear, everything she has recommended is the real deal, I use them at home and get the same results as in the salon which is seriously unheard of. Also, the prices are comparable to what you can find online. I so appreciate the time she takes to show me how to style my hair. It really makes all the difference. I have been going to Alexandra at Stilisti for about 7 years now and I honestly cannot imagine having anyone else touch my hair! I love everything about this salon- the customer service is fantastic, everyone is very friendly, they have little snacks (almonds, candy, etc.), coffee, tea, water, and they always greet me with a smile (even if it's been months since I've come in). The cut and color always come out amazing (and they never push for you to buy their products)! I am even able to get a custom touch up kit made for my roots when I don't have time to come in- the color matches perfectly! The prices are a bit steep, but comparable to other places on Newbury (and most places are not as nice as this salon). Two years ago, I hired Alexandra and another girl from Stilisti to do the hair styling for my wedding and I could not be happier. When google gave me a million hair salons from my basic search I went to Instagram and came across @hair.air , aka Ali Reynhart (follow ASAP bc her work is ) Following Ali was one of my better decisions, she is everything you want & more in a hair stylist! As soon as I saw she had a last minute opening in her schedule, I took it! My time at Stilisti with Ali was AMAZING. I've never felt more beautiful on the outside & the inside. Ali asked me what I was interested, talked me through everything she had in mind and asked about my thoughts about what she came up with. Obviously loved everything. This salon is amazing! I typically see a stylist, but he was out sick so the owner, Marisa, took his appt. to avoid me having to reschedule. Her cut, color and attention to detail is unparalleled. Not only is Marisa an amazing stylist, she's a bad ass woman entrepreneur! And to boot, she only charged me my regular stylists pricing (she gets a lot more for her own cut and color)!
