This place has excellent Lao and Thai food. Service was also very friendly, kind, and fairly speedy. Khao ploon was like a more sour version of Thai Khao soi. It had a ton a of flavor in all arenas- sweet, sour, salty, spicy. The fresh veggies and herbs it came with made the flavor that much better. Red curry was delicious as well. Our son had just returned from a month in Thailand the day before so we thought we would have some Thai food. I was at Sachse taking pictures on the Bluebonnet Hill and a friend suggested coming here. Since we were hardly ever in the area, we thought why not! It's definitely my first stab at Laotian food so I wasn't sure what to expect but overall I think I had a very enjoyable experience. The place was very busy when we arrived and our server was helpful on suggesting items and letting us know what flavors are in the dishes we've picked out. We started off with the nam kao and the laotian sausage. The nam kao was delicious!! It had a great combination of flavors and the texture with that crispy but not hard or burnt rice was wonderful. The laotian sausage had a really good flavor to it but the texture was just so odd! It's normal initially then gets mushy (not too crazy about this dish). However, I wasn't discouraged and looked forward to our entrees! We got the tamarind shrimp and the spicy catfish. Our server suggested certain spice levels for these dishes and I was a bit disappointed at how not spicy either one was, not even a hint of it, at least for next time I will know to level up! The tamarind shrimp came in a pretty big portion, each shrimp was lightly battered and they were huge! The flavor was a bit tangy and had a fish sauce taste to it. It also had mixed veggies on there which went very well with the dish as well. The spicy catfish reminded me a lot of this catfish in red curry that we typically get at Thai Places. The portion was very generous with lots of catfish filets and lots of veggies. Both of our entrees were absolutely delicious!! Sharing this much food between two people, you can expect a lot of leftovers and we wanted to try the dessert so we packed away a good bit of our food. We ordered the fried banana with coconut and green tea ice cream. The banana had a good batter on it, it was light and crispy. The coconut ice cream was yummy, it went very well with the banana. The green tea ice cream was alrighttt.. it didn't have a strong green tea flavor. I would give this place a 4.5 but the overall experience was so good I wish I didn't live so far so we can come back and try other dishes! I rarely feel right about 5 stars because there's always room for improvement but I've been exposed to a lot of Laotian food hanging with the Special Friend and this was like eating at home! This is a family owned and family run restaurant. Must be family recipes because the food is authentic and traditional, although the presentation is modern. We watched the Mavs game there and when Dirk hit that 3 before overtime, the restaurant cheered! It's not a sports bar by any means, but it's definitely casual and comfortable. The Special Friend, his bestie and I started with the crab cream cheese rolls because I love anything with crab & cream cheese in a wonton! It could use more crab. I like how it's lightly fried so it's not too soft or too hard. The yum woon sen was something I have not tried before. It has a vinegary, sour and sweetness to it with fresh veggies. Special Friend thought it was refreshing, light and flavorful. Glass noodles are carb free so it's a good choice if you're looking for something healthy. Even with ordering it mild, it still has a tinge of spiciness, which I could accept because it seemed right for this dish. The pad kee mow was flavorful! I love flat noodles because it is simply something I cannot cook myself. Special Friend says it's a mouthful of flavor. He honestly thinks it's the best pad kee mow he's had. I actually wanted the kao poon but this guy ordered the pad kee mow for me!! But it's all good. I didn't pay so whatevs. I really liked the basil and the ground chicken all mixed with eggs. It's better than chunks of chicken. I've had the kao poon chicken at someone's house so I know I like it and I wanted it but the guy ordered it with 4 peppers. He wants me to say it's a very traditional dish served at many Laos house parties and has never seen it on a menu! It's a flavor I can't describe because I'm not really a cook, but i taste coconut, and it's a thick broth. It actually wasn't too spicy so I had a few spoonfuls. He asked for their spice rack but changed his mind and asked for shrimp paste and Thai chilis, and they had it! The bowl was all his after that....too traditional haha We were ready for dessert but ended up ordering nam kho with cured pork (make sure you get the cured pork!). I've also had this before at the house parties he takes me to, but this is my favorite dish here. So glad we decided to pig out!! The rice is crunchy and I guess it's the coconut that makes it sweet? So good!! It's an excellent lettuce wrap. I thought I liked this dish before, but I really love it here. I would definitely like to come back for this and the kao poon but it depends on my taxi aka Special Friend. The fried banana is a large serving! It's actually a plantain banana, not the regular banana, so it's less sweet, which goes well with ice cream. We didn't know it was 2 scoops of ice cream so we had coconut ice cream, but I suggest getting one of each (other flavor is green tea)! The coconut ice cream has chunks of coconut in it. Good stuff. It was a long ride to endure home after stuffing ourselves, but we'd definitely come back. There are just a few Laos restaurants but this menu is different, serving foods made traditionally for family and friends. Love it!! read more

First off, I'd love to address the staff because for me, customer service is very important. Sweetest family and any questions you might have about a dish or anything on the menu, they do not mind taking the time to answer. If you ask for a suggestion, chances are you won't be disappointed. The food is delicious.. Since they've opened, I've been here at least once a week. If you're really big on papaya salad, Sticky Rice (SR) serves THE BEST I've had. Almost as good as when my family makes it. It's packed with authentic flavors that I haven't found anywhere else. Most places just use fish sauce and lime juice to mix the papaya but I know SR uses way more ingredients. Their fried quail is an appetizer I recently discovered with my mom and I will have to say if you pair that up with the papaya salad, you've got yourself a delicious entree right there. If I can make some suggestions for the newbies reading this review or even guests who have already been here but just curious to see what other people have to say, here are some of my favorite dishes that will most likely become yours too :) Papaya salad and fried quail for appetizers. Sticky rice has very little to no flavor to me but it's like crack to all my non-Lao friends. That being said, I can't be fully satisfied with a Lao meal if I don't have sticky rice. It's like eating Italian without bread, it's just plain silly. The wife and I came here on a Sunday afternoon, a little bit after Noon. I was fully expecting a packed dining room but was pleasantly surprised when the place was half empty. The food was not as good as I was hoping, especially for the price. There's other places around DFW that is more reasonably priced if you're willing to make the trek. For example, they charge $3 for a little basket of sticky rice. That's nuts! Just for comparison purposes, Nalinh (Irving) charges you $1 for all you can eat sticky rice. The dish I really wanted to try was the Beef Larb (side note: I hate when Lao restaurants call this dish Larb. When we pronounce it, there is no R sound at all. A more accurate spelling would be Laab, but I digress...) but it was priced at 9.99, now add the basket of sticky rice to eat with it (there is no other way to eat it) and you're looking at a $13 meal that would normally cost about $8 anywhere else. Ok, I get it, it's apples and oranges. Beautiful outer suburb Murphy vs dirty, inner suburb Irving but still... I ordered the Kao Poon, which is a vermicelli noodle soup. The broth was good but not what I was expecting. I grew up eating this dish and the way mom makes it is heartier. This broth was ok but left something to be desired. My wife had Nam Kao. Most Lao people would have this as a main course but here, they have it on the appetizer menu. It's basically a rice mixed with herbs and spices. You can add cured pork for an extra charge. Lao people wouldn't eat it without the pork so it's a shame that they make you pay extra for it. The worst part was the service. Our server was Richard, or at least that's what our receipt said. He seemed to always be in a rush. Even when he talked, it was hard to understand him because he was talking so fast. He said twice that he would refill my water, never did. I had to ask the hostess, who was helping him bus his tables, for a refill. My wife ordered a Thai tea and wanted a little bit more milk for it, again, he repeated what she asked for and never came back with it. The kitchen staff had to help him with serving the food because I think he got overwhelmed. Nice guy but I think he needed to slow down and take a breath and compose himself. read more

Don't miss the egg drop soup!! It was like nothing I had ever tasted and it was wonderful!! I tried the beef jerky, fried pork dumplings, pork rolls, Thai rice and edamame. Every bit of it was yummy! The appetizers are around $5! We actually called it in for pick-up the very next day. 4 was a great level of spice. I will try the 5 next time. The service was great! Lao Sausage : good, but the beef jerky and sticky rice stole the show as far as apps Entrees: Pad Kee Mow: really good and really fresh. A lot of fresh veggies came with this dish. I've typically had this served with chunks of chicken, but this came with minced chicken. Went well with the dish. Would order again Pan Nang curry: also really good. Very rich sauce and had perfect amount of spice(ordered 3 stars of spice, which was perfect). Would order again. Pepper steak: great dish with good flavor. Also came with a ton of veggies. Beef was very tender- definitely felt like they used high quality beef. Wasn't tough or chewy at all. Very tender. This place has phenomenal service and absolutely yummy food. The location is convenient, and the restaurant itself was nice and clean. Definitely a family friendly environment. They have this beautiful hand painted mural on the wall, and it was just so lovely to look at. The wait staff was so incredibly kind, and they were so accommodating for my vegan grandma. You can customize all of the dishes with varying spice levels if you wished. The portion size is huge though, but I don't mind that since the price is very reasonable and affordable. My family and I tried a lot of dishes (i.e., appetizers, entrees, desserts), and every single one was delicious. I personally had the curry fried rice with tofu, and I really enjoyed the flavors. It's located in the back of the parking lot behind all the restaurant strips on the side of 544. I ordered to-go only. Fairly quick service on a slow Wednesday night. They didn't skip a beat in my order, and the spice level is pretty true to their word. (They added three different types of chili spices on the side: chili oil, chili paste, and dry chili flakes). I enjoy a good heat, so I think I'll order Thai level spice next time. Pad woon sen was delicious and the vegetables were fresh and not overcooked. Papaya salad was cool and spicy. It's rare that a good Thai place would give you so much food you want to explode, and the prices were reasonable too. We had the chicken fried rice which was different bc the chicken was fried individually and placed on top of the fried rice. The waiter recommended that dish and also the beef pad kee mao. I sure enjoyed them both. Level 3-spicy has a good kick to it. I think their level of spicy was more realistic than most Thai places (other places weren't spicy to me). We enjoyed family dinner here tonight. Decor: simple but tasteful. The restaurant was clean and inviting. I especially loved the mural. Service: it was outstanding. We were seated and greeted immediately. The waiter brought out our drink order and asked if we wanted an appetizer. He didn't rush us as we were talking and let us know that when we were ready to order he'd be happy to help. He filled our water and we didn't even have to ask. Great Service-thank you. Flavor was not normal for the average Thai restaurant in North Texas - it had more of a tomato and herb flavor. Meat was tough, potatoes piping hot, peanuts very soft, and green bell peppers had two strong of a flavor. Rice was cooked well. The crab fried rice had no flavor; the crab tasted like it came from a low quality crab meat can. The pad woo sen was mushy and tasted like the chef just throw in a bunch of stuff on the wok and add soy sauce. The beef on the pad woo sen did not tasted fresh (freezer burnt) and very chewy. Our favorite Thai restaurant in DFW. Great service, awesome flavored foods, and they got Laos style papaya. Most restaurants only service Thai papaya salad which is more lime/citrus flavored with fish sauce vs the Laos style that uses shrimp paste. It's stinky goodness my wife loves. Their larb is excellent as well using fresh mints and other veggies. We typically order enough food for 2 meals and have a little variety of everything and take it home for the next meal. Although everything we have tried has been good, our favorites are Lao papaya salad, Thai pork larb, Seafood laad na, crab fried rice with extra crab. I can keep listing other things, but those are our go to defaults. I can't comment on their desserts because we never make it that far. read more

I had a terrible experience here when I came here with my family. We were all excited to try this restaurant after reading the raving reviews on yelp about it. When we entered we were immediately seated, and when I looked around this place looked fairly busy. The waitress came and took our order and she seemed friendly at first. I had high hopes for the food by seeing how delicious other people's food looked. My family and I were talking and patiently waiting. About 45 minutes passed by and my mom wanted to ask the waitress how much longer would the food take. We kept trying to get her attention and the waitress kept walking by us. We then tried to get the attention of the other 2 waiters working and they flat out ignored us. Eventually 10 minutes later, my mom went up to the counter to ask about our order. The waitress finally came to our table and she told us that apparently she wasn't able to put in our order in the computer because it was acting up. When it finally started working she forgot to try to put it in again. She said she was going to put in the order again and it would take sometime between 30-40 minutes. After waiting nearly an hour, we did not want to wait even longer. My family and I were furious at their lack of competency and customer service. She wouldn't have even noticed if we did not call her attention to it. I understand that technical issues happen and people make mistakes, but the way that they handled the situation was pathetic. Honestly if I owned a restaurant and a situation like this arose I would have offered my guests a free appetizer as an apology. The waitress here did not even apologize for the wait. My family ended up just paying for our drinks and left. On our way out the waitress was like "thank you please come again!". As if we would ever step foot into that horrid restaurant ever again! read more

This is a pretty good Thai place around the area. Food is average and nothing was too outstanding. Pretty good flavors however, everything was a little salty. I love how you can customize the spice on every dish to your liking. The level 4 Thai spice was spicy, but it was much more of a lingering spice. The more you ate it, the spicier it gets.
