To be honest, the first lady that helped us was not the most friendly or helpful and it was very odd that they put away some of the luxury glasses early and she refused to let us view them during business hours (still 1.5hrs before closing). She also provided me with a different closing time than I was provided later and failed to let us know about a sale and insurance coverage details until late in the process when it would have totally shifted my buying mindset instead of wasting my time at the beginning. Later, we were helped by Eric who was super helpful so this 5 star review is for him. He is patient and did a great job juggling multiple clients at the same time. He makes amazing frame recommendations based on our wants and he spent the time to help explain lens options. He also was able to ask for permission to show us some of the luxury frames that were put away early, although I was disappointed to still find out late in the process that they don't accept insurance for some of those frames. I've been coming to this optical for a few years now and I am so happy and satisfied! Dr. Kwok is an amazing doctor, always so knowledgeable and kind! I have never had an issue with his assessments. In regards to the staff, you can rest assured knowing that they got your back and they care about you. Zei is adorable and amazing, wasn't sure if I wanted a new frame, so I let him choose one for me to see what would happen? Honestly, I really wanted to have an optometrist that was close by and convenient plus a place that would take my eye insurance. Parking isn't great because you have to deal with the mall crowd. Ok, Dr. Kwok, who I thought had a great bedside demeanor and patience while administering my "eye exam". He provided me a really bad prescription and I couldn't see clearly after I received my glasses meaning I couldn't read my emails on my phone or on my computer. I went back to see if they readjust my glasses or the prescription so they said they would take care of it. Still had continuing issues after and whenever, I saw Dr. Kwok in the store, he would brush me off saying he was busy. The staff is inconsistent and inconsiderate just trying to upsell you on every feature. He is just trying to sell as much to pay for his pricey rent inside the mall so there he has zero customer service and doesn't care about you after the fact. If you have ok eyesight and don't care about your sight then frequent this place. I would give this place a -5 stars if possible. read more

BEWARE!!!!!! This place is a rip off. I had my first appointment there and was charged waaaay more than I've ever paid at any optical appointment in my life. Be careful buying frames from this company as they mark up the prices triple the cost of the retail price of designer frames. They have a pair of YSL Sunglasses that I liked. On the YSL website they charge $900, however in this establishment they cost $1500. In addition, they nickel and dime you and slide in many hidden cost. They operate like used car salesmen. It was my first and last time ever going back. I should have stayed away when I was told on my first visit that they didn't accept my insurance, and when I returned 6 months later, they claimed that they didn't know who told me that. The only good thing that I can say to be 100% completely honest, Is the doctor seemed very knowledgeable and had great manners. However, the hustler that they have working at the front desk is seasoned in price gauging and fast talking. I don't like the experience that I had with them and I don't recommend anyone go there unless you have a contract attorney with you. It's sad that you can't relax and get an eye exam without feeling like someone is going to rob you during the appointment. How did I end up with a $2000 plus bill when I don't have any eye diseases, nor do I wear bi-focal, or have glaucoma or cataracts. The math isn't mathing. At 5pm EST on January 13th 2020, my husband and I entered the store. Annually we spend $1000, out of pocket, on eyeglasses/lenses & sunglasses. We decided to try Sterling Optical. Although there were two employees during our visit, a female and a male, we were not greeted nor acknowledged whatsoever. A customer walked out as my husband and I entered in which the male employee was obviously available and the female on the computer. Despite walking past by him, he still did not acknowledge my presence. I was eager to try some glasses that appealed to me. But unfortunately I decided to walk out after 10 minutes of not being greeted or acknowledged. Sterling Optical has lost potential consumers. I will gladly spend my money elsewhere. read more

Worst customer service I've encountered in a long time. Scheduled a Saturday morning appointment but when the day arrived I was told I did not have an appointment!! So, I scheduled the next available appointment which happened to be Sunday at 4:30 pm (not ideal). Arrived on time but when 5 o'clock "came and went" with no service or explanation "as to why" I got up and left (did inform the person at the desk of my displeasure before leaving). I got 3 pairs of glasses two years ago and a new one last week. I've been waiting for covid restrictions to be lifted to try on glasses without a mask. Their glasses selection had a great variety, the people give honest feedback to find the right frame for my face and style I'm looking for. Thomas adjusted my new pair and was the first to ever explain why I get headaches if it's too tight at the temple tip (spacing with my Ossicle bone). My family found this place while looking for LensCrafters in the mall. I'm so glad we did. Both my husband and son recently ordered their glasses here. My son was looking for more modern and colorful glasses for teenagers, and was not disappointed with their selection. He chose a pair of Oakley's and was able to get them within a week. My husband has a larger head and was pleased to find that they carried several pairs of frames that come in larger and wider sizes. The customer service was superb and very helpful with helping us find a good fit. I'm not sure what's going on with the other reviews, but our experience was far from what was described by others. Horrible service. Manager is not aware of the promotional mail sent by mail to customer homes. Asked to clarify contact lenses promotion and she just blew me off. She could care less about my business so I guess she's saying "Sorry I can't help you and please go buy from another store." Ok I will. My boyfriend dropped a pair of his fathers old frames so that he could have the lenses replaced. He was told on last Friday (June 24, 2016), that his frames would have new lenses in four hours. It wasn't until yesterday (June 27, 2016) that we decided to pick them up. Upon entering the Tyson Corner mall location in Virginia, we were approached by the store attendant named Antonia. She then proceeded to say "what y'all want??", as we walked up to the counter. We explained our reason for coming to the store, and immediately we felt as though she did not want to be bothered by us. She asked what my boyfriend's name, and continued to be rude to us. At first we thought is was her personality, she wasn't warm and inviting and we thought perhaps it just wasn't the type of customer service experience she provides, to which we understood because everybody has off days. We quickly found out after she retrieved the glasses from the back, that they were not ready after two-three days. My boyfriend asked for a refund. To which we had a sign thrown in our face ... And Antonia rudely reiterated "No refund policy". Getting answers and help from her felt like trying to get blood from a turnip. We asked to speak to a manager, but Antonia was the only person there at the time. She proceeded to hand us the managers card. My boyfriend, didn't waste anytime to call. During this time, there were other customers in the store. They came up to the counter and Antonia's entire demeanor changed. She was polite, courteous and engaging. She allowed them to speak, answered their questions fully and provided information relevant to their inquiries. It was clear to my boyfriend and I that our business and presence were not welcomed. So we walked out of the store feeling upset disappointed by the way we were treated. My boyfriend didn't want anything to do with the young lady, because she was so rude. I myself, felt bad, and told him he should leave the frames so that they could be fixed since he already paid for the services. I returned into the store and calmly said that he would like to leave his frames for them to be serviced. I also told her that we felt as though she wasn't treating us fairly and was extremely rude to us. Not only did she not let me finish my statement. She turned her nose up at me. She began yelling at me and told me that she didn't need to deal me, told me that I was not important. She walked away screaming and yelling at me. As a customer in this store, I further explained that the least she could do is listen to our concerns or apologize. But you couldn't hear me or anything I was saying because she continued to yell at us in the store. She then began to insult us, calling us "raggedy" and "Broke". She threw my boyfriends items in a box, is if they were not fragile. All the while, all I was attempting to do was address an issue I felt could be easily solved through conversation. She then began to berate us, saying that "she runs through customers like us all the time" ... Telling us it doesn't matter what we say because "She'll still be here". Continuously Pointing, finally she told us to "get out weight up". I'm not sure what this means, but it didn't sound friendly to us.. She was very aggressive. In addition she told us to "see her at 9:30pm" and insinuated that if we wait for her after work so that she could become violent with us and wanted to engage in violence. She became so angry, that she wanted to threaten Physical harm to paying customers. At no point did I think addressing the fact that I and my boyfriend felt we were being mistreated and unfairly...that it would lead to a verbal altercation...With what seemed to be based off of our appearance. We were not rude, loud or otherwise at any point inappropriate upon walking into the store. This employee, Antonia, is rude, inconsiderate and was discriminatory or profiled my boyfriend and I. Based off of how we appeared she decided to treat us in a disrespectful and rude manner, insulted us and berated us. This employee has the potential to become dangerous, and violent. read more

Customer service: A+ Wait time: A Sales skill: A Adjustment skill: A+ (thanks Debiana!) Proficient and friendly are just a few words I would use to describe the Sterling Optical staff. Debiana and Ann Marie were so cheerful even at 5:00pm when I came in for a frames repair, it was such a refreshingly pleasant experience. Before arriving, I had called Sterling Optical Tysons to see if I could order a replacement hinge for my prescription frameless glasses. Ann Marie, who answered the phone, was extremely helpful and said that they can help me order a replacement piece but in the meantime, they can fit my frames with a temporary piece while I wait for the replacement to arrive. In the past when my hinge broke, I would be without my glasses for at least a week while waiting for the part to arrive. So I was pleasantly surprised with this temporary solution. This was definitely an "above and beyond" for me. I later found out that they had changed management since December 2017 - so glad! When I got to the store, Ann Marie was helping other customers so Debiana assisted me with my frames. I ended up deciding on a new pair of frames onto which Debiana helped me fit my old lens. She even helped me replace the broken nose bridge on my spare frames by using the nose bridge from my old frames free of cost. Another must-mention is the ease at which Debiana adjusted my glasses. It has been a while since I've found someone this competent in making adjustments. My glasses now fit so comfortably! Debiana was so pleasant and efficient, I was in and out with two pairs of glasses that I am extremely happy with, in less than 30 minutes (15 mins if I don't include wait time since there were multiple customers before me). With such a positive experience, I may even try out their Optometrist for when an eye exam is due! Thank you Debiana and Ann Marie for restoring my faith in eyewear stores! read more

This place must have more business than they know what to do with because they certainly don't need mine! I came in after seeing the eye doctor next door- had NO contacts in thus could not read their contract or whatever it was. I needed a pair of trial lenses- the concept of a trial to me is that you can TRY something and if you hate it- which I did- you are not stuck. The trial pair of lenses cost more than my usual lenses, I had to pay the full amount for them and the day after I put them in my eyes began to experience horrible headaches. I was told that I would get money back as these lenses cost more than the regular but nope- i got a store credit and only after I TOLD them that there was a cost differential- good thing I knew that. Okay- this place is rude, has lost my file twice, and I so did not want to go back but n ow that i have a store credit I guess I have to go back which further infuriates me. At least if I can't SEE then tell me verbally what your policies and procedures are because I feel like I was tricked. My advice- go to Costco or there is an eye doctor in Crystal City which lets you have free trials apparently. I am so disgusted with all of these clowns. They don't care about you and they make sure you can't get your money back because they know their service is sub-par at best. read more

I have been a loyal and satisfied customer of Sterling Optical (located in the Tysons Corner Center Mall in McLean, Virginia) for well over a decade. I was first drawn to the particular store by their high quality and wide selection of attractive eyewear frames. Throughout the years, whenever it was time to replace my lenses with a newer prescription, repair a clumsily abused set of eyeglasses or simply change "my look," the staff of Sterling Optical at Tysons always proved attentive to my needs and very helpful in guiding my frame ware selection. Seeking a series of sophisticated high index, progressive lenses that conformed to my unique poor eyesight/high correction requirements (and evolving tastes) never proved a problem. The highly professional and competent optical technicians would patiently and meticulously explain to me all the options available, while carefully pointing out all of the practical pros and cons of each available lens option. Every time my eyewear selection was completed; and my lens' technical options were decided; and all of my critical optical measurements were double checked, the Sterling Optical staff would politely and pleasantly concluded my purchase transaction. In all cases, my eyeglasses would be exactingly manufactured and made available for pick up and final fitting within the promised time frame. SPECIAL NOTE: Most recently during the Covid-19 Pandemic, I had broken one of my eyeglass lenses in an unfortunate slip and fall incident. Leery of entering Tysons Mall during this period of escalating virus infection rates, I weighed my limited options. Bleary eyed, I donned a face mask and marched into Tysons Center, choosing the social distancing security blanket of a lower occupancy, weekday morning opening hour. Arriving early, I cautiously waited at a safe distance from the still locked storefront security gate. I watched as the Senior Optical Technician and Store Manger "Eric" appeared to meticulously inspect the cleanliness of the store's interior and, when finished, opened the security gate precisely at 11:00AM. Greeting me with friendly smiling eyes and a fresh face mask (while standing behind a Plexiglas buffer), Eric once again began the process of addressing all of my eyewear woes. As in the past, Eric handled himself in the most professional and friendly manner. My anxiety drifted away and a sense of relief relaxed my Covid-19 induced tension. Once my new glasses arrived, I reentered Tysons Mall while wearing contact lenses and picked up my eyeglasses in a virtual masked flash. Once home, I removed my contacts and tried on my beautiful shiny new spectacles. Oh my goodness! My ophthalmologist (independent and wholly unrelated to Sterling Optical) wrote me a completely defective, pre-pandemic prescription. I could barely see out of my new eyeglasses. Angry at my doctor's error, I arranged to have the my eye doctor immediately substitute and update last year's correct prescription. A few days later, corrected prescription in hand, I once again approached Eric during Sterling Optical's security gate opening time. Barely concealing a sincere empathetic smile behind his fresh face mask, Eric confirmed that, occasionally, doctors do make mistakes. He explained to me that, under such circumstances, Sterling Optical offers a 60 day eyewear return and remanufacturing policy, free of charge! Now I wait for my truly corrected lenses, with a big smile under my face mask. No mystery on why I remain a loyal and satisfied customer of Sterling Optical. Thanks Eric! Stay healthy. I've been coming to this place for 2 years now and I must say that the staff is very friendly and helpful. I went to pick up my trial contact lenses and they doubled check the prescription on them to make sure they were correct. They also have a good selection of frames. The staff members were patient with me as I tried on almost all their frames. Well, okay, maybe half their frames. =) I do recommend not to come during the holiday season, especially mid December since the mall gets extremely busy. It is harder to find a good parking spot and it gets crowded. read more

Shady employee tried to rip me off on a glasses cleaner today when I came in around 5pm. She was in the middle of some personal call and I asked her about the cost of the small solution that was no more than 4 ounces. She told me it was $7!!! Really? The average cost is between $2 to $3 for that size. Maybe it doubles as a face mask or hair spray for you to double charge? I left- no wonder you hardly see anyone in this store. She probably wanted to brush me off with the sticker shock price so that she could continue on with her phone call. read more

If you're considering going to Sterling Optical at Tyson's Corner Mall you need to have your head examined -- not your eyes. I learned the hard way. One of the temples came off of my Silhouette glasses. They charged me $140. I called my regular optician and they would have charged $75. The amazon woman who waited on me was rude and had a pathetic attitude. Every time I go to the Mall I'll probably make it a point to tell one, or more, customers of my experience -- and try to keep them from getting ripped off. read more

I just read in a previous review that the doctor was replaced, as well as the whole staff, so this might be a little outdated. I can only attest to Patty who was the optician assisting me at the store a few months ago and she was amazing. While she was really no nonsense, she was also extremely helpful. My insurance wasn't accepted here, but she offered me a discount on my frames that made it worthwhile to purchase anyway. And then when there was an issue with the fit of my glasses, she knew exactly how to fix it and they've been fitting great ever since. Really glad I browsed all the other eyewear shops in the mall and knew this was the best place to go. I really hope Patty is still there and if she is, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

I rarely do online reviews but feel I need to do it this time---so that the other people might be able to benefit from my experience and stay away from this store. The customer services at this store deserves a "Zero star". I put down one star because the eye doctor was nice. I got a pair of prescription eye glasses with a Maui Jim frame from the store last year. Seven month later, the outside paint from both legs pilled off. I went back to the store, hoping to fix the problem. The woman, who seemed to be in charge at the store was rude and impatience. Below were what she did: 1. First she told me this was " normal wear and tear" and was not covered under the warranty. 2. After I convinced her that this was not "Normal" for a seven month old frame, She told me that I "can only use the warranty once" and asked me if I wanted to use the warranty on this "minor thing" considering the fact that I would not be able to file a warranty request again for possible " more serious problems" in the future. 3. After I told her Yes I want to use the "only once warranty ", she told me that I need to contact Maui Jim by myself and Sterling optical would be able to help me! It turned out that all she mentioned were not true. I contacted Maui Jim and was told this type of problem was 'defiantly under warranty". MJ wouldn't deal with purchaser directly for glasses with prescription lens and all I need to do was to visit one of their authorized dealers and they would handle it for me. I went to Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry the other day, a nice lady name Pam helped me out by contacting Maui Jim and ordering new parts. The whole problem was resolved within less than 10 minutes. Although I did not purchase the frame from them, Pam handled everything professionally and efficiently with no questions asked. I am not so sure what is wrong with the Sterling optical staff but I am pretty sure treating custom dishonestly and rudely is not the correct way of doing business. Had only one pair of glasses and the lenses got scratched. Got a new prescription from the attached optometrist - Richard Davidson - who was quite helpful. Then spent an hour picking out and buying new glasses and prescription sunglasses for a total price tag (with "insurance") of more than $700. Had a long discussion about the need to ensure the sunglasses were dark enough and was told by the salesperson that they would be at least 90% (block 90% of the light). I need that as I have light induced migraines. Was also told "they'll both be ready Friday". Not ready Friday. Did get a call that they "should be in" Saturday but no idea of a time. Got a call Sat they had come in. The glasses were fine. The sunglasses were far from dark enough. Then I got the "we have to send them back to the lab" "not sure what they will do" from the same sales person - then a lab person from the back showed up to explain that they "can't make them too dark since it invalidates the warranty" - and of course, I'd already paid for the warranty. Asked for my money back at that point and was told "we don't give refunds"... they say sometime next week they might have my sunglasses.... Summary - Just don't spend your money here. We went in this afternoon to find a new pair of glasses for my wife. We had no experience with Sterling optical as a company up to this point but the customer service was terrible. I had purchased a Groupon a couple of weeks ago, I told the lady and she had no idea what to do. She tried to point me to a special they were running in the store for $100 off. When I pointed I already had $100 off plus it was for two pairs of glasses she started acting irritated. For the second pair she insisted it was only for their discontinued frames and started pulling frames from the back of a drawer which were not even on display. Terrible customer service and I feel like I was miss led and ripped off by their Groupon ad. I still need glasses but I'll take my money else where. read more

In June 2013 I purchased a pair of Silhouette eyeglasses (for about $800) and a pair of custom clip ons (sun shades) for an additional $150. Just over a year later the clip ons have broken completely in two, despite modest use and certainly no abuse. I contacted Silhouette and they refuse to provide any sort of reduced-price replacement. Sterling offered a very modest discount on a new clip on; why not a full refund for this obviously defective product? Beware of purchasing Silhouette eye wear from Sterling Optical. read more
