I went back again for my annual eye exam and contact lens fitting and had a great experience! Dr. Schutte continues to have excellent bedside manner and was able to alleviate my concerns and answer additional questions that I had since my last appointment last year. I ordered new custom glasses (down to the lenses, frames, and colors!) and I'm pleased with how they came out! Even though I have pretty bad vision, the lab was able to make the lenses as thin as possible. When I came in to pick them up, Dr. Bieber assisted me with my fitting and adjustments and made sure that I was comfortable in them. I also ordered another year's worth of contacts and they were shipped right to my home which was super convenient. I made an appointment for my husband for his annual eye exam and he also had a positive experience. He even bought two pairs of glasses which both came within a week! My family and I have been patients at this optometry practice for a few years. The changes they went through isn't good. The "office manager" is unprofessional. I am pretty sure no one cares about your degenerate gambling ex-husband while getting glasses. I digress, internally they information doesn't flow as it did, and bad information given to me the patient. The results are changing our rating here, adding these comments, and removing our entire family from this practice. We will see how they handle the request of our data removal. Do not waste your time coming here. This place treats you like a customer, not a patient. I have been coming here for 3 years without any issues and suddenly this year I was denied an annual eye exam without a single explanation from anyone. I asked if it was my insurance but that was not the issue as they still accept my insurance. The front desk lady, Jessica, could not explain why they abruptly canceled my appointment the day before and kept saying "the doctor will reach you." I still have not received a call back to this day. Instead, I called back twice and Jessica puts me immediately on hold for 10-15 min then hangs up the phone BOTH times. VERY inconvenient and VERY unprofessional to cancel someone's appointment without a single explanation. I am appalled at how I'm told in an email that "we will no longer be seeing you here at our office." So, just because you've been coming here for years or are a newcomer, do not trust this place as they care more about their reputation than a patient's well-being and right to an annual exam. I am a nurse and would never turn a patient away without a valid explanation as to why they are being denied the right to an exam or healthcare service. I loved it here - my very first eye doctor experience and it was amazing. Highly recommend.

I've been wearing glasses since I was 7 years old. Over the course of my life, that's (roughly) around 15-20 eye exams, 12 air puff tests, 9 pairs of glasses, and one failed attempt at trying contacts. Basically, a lot of time spent at the eye doctor's. My experience at Modern Optometry has by far been the best of recent memory. Things are done a little differently here. For example, you sign laminated consent forms that (I assume) are subsequently scanned into the system, rather than a paper document. No paper, no waste. That sort of creative thinking speaks to me! And routine pre-screening tests (e.g., air puff test, auto refractor test) are handled by the attendant/technical assistant before the formal eye exam which helps move things a little quicker. Oh and speaking of the air puff test, this mini torture is done with an air gun that blows "soft air" into the eye, and not that massive machine you attach your face to. It still didn't stop me from throwing a slight tantrum before the trigger went off (we had a good laugh about this) but still, I appreciated the softer air. Dr. Schutte himself is wonderful. Thorough and patient, he takes time to answer questions and educate. Sarah is an expert of all things insurance-related, and she's great at picking the exact frames you wanted but couldn't find among the large selection on display. Lovely staff, great selection, modern technology, environment-friendly. So happy to have found this little place! read more

About a half hour after cancelling my appointment and giving my review I got a call from Katy. Katy, the amazing optician who helped me last year saw my review, explained the situation and graciously invited me to return. Her concerns were so genuine I couldn't help but say yes and reconfirmed my appointment time. This morning I realized that in the interim between cancelling my appointment and rescheduling it I had made a different appointment that conflicted. I called and left a message explaining the dilemma and Katy was friendly and helpful and rescheduled me to this afternoon. Had my appointment, different doctor, still amazing, thorough and friendly. And had a wonderful time browsing frames with Katy helping me just as before, found a really cute pair. It is really nice to have someone who really knows how to balance glasses with the shape of a face and personal style. So the initial problem was a new employee, not experienced with customer service, emoting over the phone and a bit clueless on when it was time to express empathy with frustration or when to ask for help. Basically, he wasn't comfortable yet with the system and was unsure how to react. He is also apparently leaving for Optometry school to become an eye doctor himself. Katy said he felt the criticisms were helpful and he actually apologized himself. I feel truly lucky that not only have I discovered excellent doctors, but ones who maintain a staff that is responsive as well as they themselves being responsive to customers. I have Katy's card now, next time there is something off I'll just give her a call. They convinced me that each patient and their experience really matters to them. They made time during a busy holiday season for an appointment for our niece so she could be fitted for contacts for the first time before school break. I live in fairfax, but for some reason the system defaulted to Yelps default of San Francisco. I shop at the Whole Foods every week, which is how I found Modern Optometry. It's too late for Modern Optometry to fix the billing issue. The only reason I know they didn't actually even try to bill my insurance is because I was suspicious of the cost of the bill, and I went to another optometrist. In addition, I'm sure I'm not the only one with insurance billing issues as you do not give out detailed receipts. Why would I want to try to reason with a "professional" whose first move is to bill me dishonestly? Why would I believe anything you say after that? I give the service five stars, and the prices one star, for an overall "okay" three star rating. In short, if your insurance coverage will pick up the tab this is a great place, but if not, yikes! It wasn't too difficult to get an appointment, about a week wait since I wasn't looking for a Saturday slot. Modern Optometry is convenient and there is plenty of parking and a rear entrance that opens to the Whole Foods parking lot. Dr. Schutte was professional and the exam very thorough. After the exam I shopped for glasses, and even though I opted for a step down from the custom lenses offered, the total came to over $1,300. Granted, these are for progressive lenses, and single vision would be less expensive, but still quite a sticker shock in comparison to previous glasses at other like (non-chain) optical shops. I did pass on those glasses... To add to the bill was the exam, and based on my mistake of not obtaining a pre-authorization, that was an added $200. So all together, the amount out of pocket for glasses, which last a max 2 years, would have been $1,500. And I suppose that would be okay, IF insurance picked up the tab, but alas, military healthcare is not a cadillac plan. I chose to move my eye care to Modern Optometry, closer to my new home, than continue traveling back to Centreville for average care. Having read many excellent reviews, I expected good things. Unfortunately, I've been let down by my experience so far. I arrived for my 10:00 am appointment and was still waiting outside at 10:01 for someone to unlock the door. I brushed it off - first appointment of the day, we all run behind sometimes. When I got inside, I had to wait for computers to boot up so that I could be checked in. Initial paperwork and insurance was handled by Sarah, who was fantastic. A technician (can't recall her name) then took me back for the pre-exam work. Let's just say it wouldn't hurt for her to have a more pleasant expression on her face when interacting with patients. Her customer service had the air of a late teen working in a clothing store in a mall. My exam was done by Dr. Bieber and was fine. She decided to provide me with a trial pair of contacts that would need to be ordered. She then led me back to the apathetic technician to check out and relayed that the exam fee would be $x and the fee for contact fitting would be $xx plus the percentage off offered by my insurance. Or at least that's what I heard. When the technician told me my total and I asked her to clarify based on what I understood, she told me that $xx was the amount with the percentage off. I still don't quite understand how I was billed as there was no detail on the receipt. Fast forward to two and a half weeks later. I still haven't heard if my trial contacts have arrived, so I stop by the location. When I walk in, apathetic technician is the only individual present at the front. We exchange greetings and I explain that I'm checking on my contacts. During this exchange, she remains 100% interested in inspecting her upper arm except for the brief moment she looks up and mispronounces my last name. Discovering my trial contacts in the back, she brings them over with no explanation or apology for why they have been sitting at the location and no one has contacted me. I really want to like this place as my experience with Dr. Bieber was good, but the demeanor of apathetic technician really brings down the service. ------------ Update 8/3/2019 Dr. Schutte personally reached out and provided me with an itemized receipt and correction for charges. I appreciate his dedication to addressing and resolving concerns - it shows he truly values the reputation of his business. I have amended my review from 2 stars to 3 for the service provided by Dr. Schutte; however, I am still extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism exhibited by the technician during both of my visits. It's been 2 years since I've seen an optometrist for a contact lens appointment. I was in between the two places which was this one and another place. In the end and obviously, I chose Modern Optometry because 1.) their a small business and 2.) they were close to home and they were in my coverage network (which is a plus for a broke young professional lol). Setting up the appointment was easy and they were able to see me right away. Dr. Joshua Schutte was able to explain to me which contacts were best for my eyes and which brands my insurance was willing to pay. I first came in to look at some glasses, and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of fashionable models to choose from. Since I already had an appointment scheduled at My Eye Doctor, my plan was to get my eyes examined there and then come back here to pick my new glasses. Katy was very helpful and helped me find the one pair that i liked. Unfortunately, the prescription given to me by the other optometry place wasn't really working for me, so I had to schedule another appointment, this time here with Dr. Joshua Schutte. He was really nice and did everything as I guess most optometrists to, but towards the end of the appointment, he put some "medical glasses" (i don't know the actual name) on me, so I could test the lenses and see if they were really the right ones. Boy, what a difference. I could really tell if a lens would work or not, thus saving some money and ordering the right lens for me. Normally I just go to one of those run of the mill places but recently I noticed there was an Amazon Local deal for Modern Optometry. I figured I would give them a try. I was pleasantly surprised reading the awesome reviews prior to my appointment. Katy greeted me warmly and we looked at frames right away while I was waiting to be seen by Dr. Joshua Shutte. I found it cool that they had frames especially made for asian faces as I do not have a bridge on my nose. I already had my frames picked out by the time the Dr. called me in for my appointment. I have never had such a thorough eye exam before. An added bonus was that there was no part of the exam where you get air puffed into your eyes. Dr.Shutte was professional and friendly. Honestly - Mixed feelings about Modern Optometry, but overall, I'm very satisfied. The good: The lady on-site was extremely helpful with helping me pick out my glasses. She was blatantly honest (and as a guy with little fashion sense, is much appreciated) about frames that she thought worked well and did not work well with me. Ultimately, I did end up with frames that I truly do like. The eh: I did honestly get some "used car dealership sales pitch" vibes from the lady helping me out. While I think that she likely did have my best interests in mind, it did seem more like a sales pitch, especially since her initial quote was with the most high end options on everything. Could use improvement: I honestly found their frame selection to be somewhat lacking, and seemed to be skewed more towards the higher end. A greater selection, especially more on the lower end, would be great. Ultimately, I ended up with a nice pair of Prada frames and decent lenses and went maybe $300 out of pocket after insurance. A bit more than I anticipated spending out of pocket, but honestly, I'm very happy with the service and the end product I received. When it comes to updating my lenses, I would definitely consider Modern Optometry (although they are quite a bit outside the beltway) read more

I have been going to Modern Optometry for several years now and have always been very pleased with the professionalism and friendliness of the doctors and the staff. I had a serious issue with my eyes a few years ago and Dr. Schutte diagnosed the problem immediately and gave me the right prescriptions to resolve it. Although I had never been there before, they made an appointment for me right away. My former doctor never even called back. I've been seeing Dr. Schutte with Modern Optometry for probably four or five years now and highly recommend him if you're looking for an Optometrist! PROS: - Great location, over by Whole Foods & Kohl's in Fair Lakes. Lots of parking both behind and in front of their shop. - Many appointment times to help with busy schedules! I never have a problem getting in after work or on a Saturday. - Easy online scheduling option - Helpful staff! There were a few bumps in the road with inexperienced staff last year, but Erika and Sarah who he has on board now are great! Erika got me checked in very quickly and took care of my pre exam. Sarah picked out the perfect frames for me (seriously, I love them!) and also helped with all of my questions about the insurance and pricing. - Dr. Schutte always runs on time, yet never makes me feel rushed during an appointment. He remembers details from the year past and always has great recommendations to help with me eye health. I also appreciate that he encourages his patients to be good healthcare consumers. Eyedrops make for expensive prescriptions and he has told me on a couple occasions to shop around via Good Rx and to take advantage of any coupons on the site. He'll also provide samples of new products (contact solution or drops) so that I can try them before I commit. -They also have a great selection of frames and a clean and inviting store front. I took my father in to see Dr. Schutte today. The entire staff and his wife were super nice and accommodating. Dr. Schutte was very patient and knowledgeable in answering our questions. I had a pleasant experience at the eye doctor office. I did not have to wait long, but as I did, the receptionists, Katy and Rose helped me choose new glasses. They even helped me select the glasses that fit my face and highly arched eyebrows best. When it came time to ring up the bill, they even found ways to bring down the out-of-pocket price. Dr. Schutte did a comprehensive eye exam and prescribed what was best for my eye comfort and health. The doctor discovered that I had astigmatism, and allowed me to test the the lens that would correct it. When the new lens made me dizzy, he was able to adjust and get a lens that worked best for me. I want people to give this place a chance, because it does seem that I went in on an off day. Not sure if I went on an off day, but I'm put off from returning. Went in for contact and eyeglass exam, and that was fast, thorough, and great. Ordered contacts through them over the phone, and that too, was a pleasant experience. Went to pick up said contacts and that was fine. (5 stars) Where it got a little weird for me was when I asked for a copy of my prescription, and only got the one for contacts. I checked my bag and noticed my other rx wasn't included so I went in to ask for it. The ladies were pleasant until I said I might get my glasses elsewhere. They grumpily handed over my glasses rx with the wrong dr.'s name stamped on it. ("I accidentally stamped the wrong dr.'s name." "Oh, it's fine"). I had also explicitly asked for my pupilary distance to be measured during my initial exam and I noticed there was was no entry on that as well. I had initially planned to get my glasses through them, but I'm not sure if I'll go back. It's a shame that the customer service fell off right at the eleventh-hour. (1 star) read more

Great service! I was late to my appointment because I had to bring my 14 month old. Everyone was really sweet with my son while I filled out paperwork etc. Dr. Schutte did a quick and thorough exam and contacts fitting despite my child being crazy. I left with the most comfortable pair of contacts I have ever worn (been wearing contacts over 10 years). I love their approach of having the customer test out the new contacts for a day or two before deciding if you want to stick with them. I have never had an eye exam before by an optometrist, and like most people on yelp, I was seeking a place with good reviews. I decided to come to this business. I had a good experience with my eye exam itself, and if I was rating on that then I would give it a 4 maybe 5 stars. Dr. Schutte is very professional, and informative with my eye exam. I decided to have both eyeglasses and contact lenses. In regards to my contact lenses, I did not get any information on the different contact lenses they offer. I decided to get monthy contacts, however, I was later informed by a coworker of the difference between monthy and daily contacts. I was so surprised that my coworker who never has worked at an optometrist office was so informative, when I was not given that information to begin with. Yes, I could have asked, but coming from a person who knows nothing about eye glasses or contacts other than they help with vision, I would hope an office with provide with that information effortlessly. I was not impressed with that overall. After my eye exam, I was shown their options for eyeglass frames. The options were not intriguing to me, and the prices were 300+, so knowing my vision insurance coverage I did not buy frames at that location. I will be honest and say that there were many of the same and similar style of frames I found online that were 50-70% of the price at that location. I finally decided to go elsewhere for my frames. I was given my Rx for my lenses, and that was not a problem. As to why I'm giving this location a low rating, it in regards to my contact lenses. I was told by Dr. Schutte that they would take 1 week to arrive and I would have an additional appointment for a fitting with the contacts. No one called me, so I decided to call myself 10 days after my initial appointment. I spoke with a worker, and it was confirmed that my contacts arrived that same day. I wanted to make an appointment as soon as possible, because I'm currently having vision complications/headaches. I work at a private practice myself and therefore I usually cannot be seen till after 5PM. I was given dates for the following week. I asked if there was any way I could come in sooner due to my symptoms. I was placed on hold, and then was told that Dr. Schutte has to see me for my next appointment, and they were "accommodating" me by giving me an explanation as to why I cannot be seen sooner. I would prefer not to disclose the reason itself, but the fact that I was told this was confusing and the way it was communicated was very unprofessional. As I explained to the worker over the phone, I did not want an explanation as to why I cannot be seen sooner. I work at a private practice and there is always a way to explain things in a professional manner. I was more irritated of how things were communicated. It made it seem that they purposely did not notify me of my contacts, because I would not have been able to be seen that same week. I asked why no one was able to advise me in advance of Dr. Schutte's work schedule, and I was not given an explanation other than I would be able to be seen as soon as "x" date. Therefore, due to the above reasons, I will be picking up my first and last pair of contacts from this office. I am not planning on returning. read more

I'm pretty sure many of these reviews are 100% FAKE! This is the WORST experience at an optometry office I've ever had. I went in for an annual complete exam in February and was not informed of the limitations on the type of contacts that I can get. I asked for a new RX for the same contacts I've been wearing for years and no fitting needed since I've been wearing these same contacts for a long time. Once the visit was over, I was told that this contact lens does not fall within the "typical contact lenses" and that I owed money because it will not be covered. I was shocked because I've never had that happen and flabbergasted because they charged me for a fitting even though I was not fitted into them. I tried asking them to waive the fee but they refused. Also, the doctor was running behind and said that he couldn't dilate me that day but to come back in a few months to get the dilation done. So fast forward, I'm back for the dilation alone and instead of picking up where it was left off they insisted on billing my insurance even though I've used up my annual visit earlier at their office. I inform them that this should just be a continuation of my initial visit. The receptionist insists that it will be covered even though I let them know that they shouldn't bill for it again if they billed for a complete exam the first time I was there. It's basically fraud! I receive a bill today for 87 dollars because my insurance of course didn't pay for it. This is the first time this has happened to me. It was not my fault the doctor was running behind, why am I paying for his tight schedule?! This office is money hungry, they don't care about patients and will try to charge for any and every thing possible even if they know your insurance won't cover it. Be careful! They even tried to get retinal pics before I even saw the doc, fully knowing my insurance doesn't cover it, however I've worked in eye care previously and was able to spot what they were doing and stop them. There are a million optometrists out there, why not pick one that is transparent and cares about patients and is not trying to scam them at every turn. read more

This is a great shop. My wife went before I did and had the same positive reaction. Dr. Schutte knows his stuff. I have complex vision correction issues that require regular evaluation and tweaking in an unusual prescription strengths. No problem. Staff is helpful and friendly. I have dealt with several, Brooke most recently, who is customer service focused, knowledgeable, and friendly. The selection of frames and lenses is outstanding. As the name implies, the styles are modern and so is Dr. Schutte's optical equipment. If you want the best of modern technology and styles combined with old fashioned customer service and patient focused attention to your eyes, this is the place to go. It's also conveniently located next to a whole foods market and many other shops. So, that's a bonus. read more
