I'll start with the good.. Dr Nguyen is very kind and patient. She gives very personalized service as it is just her and you in the office with no other staff. We originally selected Dr Nguyen because of her selection of Asian fit eyeglasses. Her calm demeanor is especially noticeable when dealing with teens who are trying contacts for the first time. She was very encouraging and very patient when they were struggling with learning to put them in and take them out. The not so good.. Dr Nguyen suggested hard contacts for our teen who has a very strong prescription due to myopia. She told us several times to store the hard contacts dry in their case. We thought that seemed odd but trusted her knowledge after asking several different times. Our teen had a very difficult time with the contacts at first but finally got the hang of putting them in and taking them out. Months into this adventure our daughter was still complaining about the contacts. We asked a few friends who also wear hard contacts about their experiences and were told to store them in solution for a more comfortable fit. Our teen started to store the contacts in solution and within a few days the contacts were much more comfortable. We have started going to new eye doctor due to the bad contact advice and one that is closer to home. The new eye doctor has much newer and more sophisticated equipment. When our teen had the eye exam with the hard contacts in the new doctor was shocked at the amount of movement there was each time the eye blinked. We had asked Dr Nguyen about this as our teen seemed to think it was moving more than it should. Dr Nguyen assured us this was normal. The new doctor said this amount of movement was not normal and that our teen was essentially looking through the very upper edge of the contacts. We have now had to order a new set of hard contacts (which are not cheap) to try to get a better fit for our teen. The new doctor also suggested a special eye drop to help to slow down our teen's myopia which Dr Nguyen never offered. I guess my best advice would be if you have no big issues with your eyesight then Dr Nguyen is an ok eye doctor. If your child has myopia I would STRONGLY suggest finding a different eye doctor who has more knowledge on the condition. read more

We went to NOVA Premier Eyecare 3 years and and went to another place the last 2 years. My glasses did go bad and I needed new ones. The other one like all the rest that I called, have an extremely poor selection of rimless glasses or none at all. I am tough on glasses and need strong frames, especially rimless. Dr. Nguyen checked out my eyes and was able to reuse my Wonderfull Silhouette frames and save me the cost of new frames. She is excellent like her glasses. I even have the sun glasses that hook onto the regular glasses with tiny magnets, that are very convenient. You will love them also, I'll bet. She takes her time with you and doesn't shuffle you through giving you something you really did not want. My wife and I are very satisfied with her and her many choices of frames. STAY AWAY FROM THIS UNETHICAL DOCTOR!!! There are some doctors who will make obtaining contacts from another source difficult so that you will order only from them - Dr Nguyen is a prime example of this. I've gotten glasses and exam from her last year and it went smoothly, so I decided to come back this year for contacts. Maybe it's because I've worn contacts before, but the contact lens 'exam' was not thorough at all. She basically just did the normal glasses exam on me, and then gave me some trial lenses for the powers she thinks fit. I don't remember my last contacts exam but don't expect a super long detailed exam from here. I asked to try on a couple of colored contacts as well. Fast forward to the end of my eye appointment, she did not offer to give me my glasses or contacts prescription. I had to ask for my prescription so I can order contacts online. She reluctantly gave it to me, but I thought nothing of it and went on my way. (I later researched that eye doctors are *required* to give you your prescription whether you ask for it or not. Sounds like she needs a refresher on the Contact Lens Rule that's enforced by the FTC.) A few weeks later. I decided to get some contacts online from a reputable source as the prices were cheaper. I took a picture of my prescription and sent it to the online store for verification. A few days later, I got a rejection email from the company saying that my prescription is invalid and expired. It turns out that the prescription I got had the wrong years on it. Remember to inspect your prescription before stepping out the office to avoid future inconveniences! I resubmitted my prescription online again. I had ordered a box of colored contacts and was rejected because my prescription was only for clear contacts, this was my fault. I should've asked that from the doctor. So naturally, my order was rejected. However, I talked with the customer representative and it turned out they personally called Dr Nguyen to verify my order. It turned out that she had told them I was not fit for colored contacts......even though I tried them on in her office and she had deemed them ok for me. Because of what she told the online-store customer rep, I was rejected from my order....again. I called Dr Nguyen to ask for a reason why she rejected the my order request, and she provided zero explanation. She only told me she didn't remember saying that, and later changing her story to "i don't remember speaking to them". I don't see a reason why the online company would be making up stories since they want my business, so I'm inclined to believe that Dr Nguyen did not give her approval when called upon. I told her I just want to get my prescription and be on my way. Know your rights as a patient!! Eye doctors are required by law to give you the prescription that you paid for. I'm sure you will be fine as long as you come here for an exam and buy your glasses/contacts from her. I will no longer return to Dr Vivian Nguyen because of her shady practices. read more

Maybe she was good but I didn't get that good of a experience out of here. She will give you an unhappy face once you say you don't want to buy contact lenses from her. Also, she never offers to give you the prescription, which is mandatory by law, unless you explicitly ask for it. I mean there are tons of other good ones out there. Why torture yourself? read more

I used to go to an eye doctor in Loudoun County when I worked in that area and I by chance was introduced to Dr. Nguyen by a former colleague; ever since I've been seeing her and have been very happy. Dr. Nguyen has your best interest in mind. She is highly professional, she makes certain you are comfortable during the examination and her office has a huge selection of frames that are competitively priced. She makes her recommendation on the type of glasses that would suit your needs, helps you choose the style and never pushes the sale; and, the glasses are delivered when promised. I had the worst second experience at this eye care. I first made an appointment with Dr.Nguyen for contact prescription over email, and I clearly mentioned that I needed contacts. The first time I went to the office I thought she was nice, which made me visit another time. But because she does most of the work herself, it is not organized and done perfect. After I went in for a check up, all that I was told to do was to roll my eyes to left, up, and right and she charged me $165 (a regular eye exam and prescription) If I was to go to a different eye care, the whole check up and prescription would be around $75, but for just rolling of the eyes for $165 I believe is outrageous. I also work at an office as a medical billing manager, and she charged me for a procedure that I did not believe was a regular eye exam, the procedure was not explained or consented by me, which is not right in healthcare. I could have fought for not paying the whole $165, but I knew that it would be a waste of my time because I am not going back there. I hope that she does not do the same thing to a different customer and that procedures are better explained. If she is not able to handle the whole thing by herself then why not have a good receptionist up front to help and not create mishap in the office. Yes, every one may know that hospitals and other medical offices are also run as businesses, but she should not be selling her products to her patients as a salesperson. read more

Unlike many other places, you don't have to deal with junior staff who don't know what they are doing. The doctor herself handles each patient herself. She has a calm and very charming personality. I found this office after reaching out to a few in the Fairfax area. I was having trouble with finding out exactly how much coverage I had. The receptionist stayed on the phone for quite some time but found the information I needed in order to be seen. Dr. Nguyen has a great chair side manner. I was convinced something was wrong with my sight but she took my history, did the exam and explained in plain English how age and cornea shape was causing my concerns. There were very nice frames and shades to chose from and she spent a lot of time with me as I tried to find the most flattering pair. I got prescription shades also. Dr. Nguyen has been my eye doctor since I moved to the NOVA region a year ago. Dr. Nguyen helped my wife with a scary eye situation. It was a week before our wedding and my wife was having substantial, redness and pain in her left eye. Dr. Nguyen was able to see my wife that same day, identify the problem, prescribe appropriate medication, and make a contact recommendation that would prevent the problem from reoccurring. Omg. Love Dr Nguyen!!! I've had a bunch of eye doctors, and I feel like she's the only one who's been straight with me. I've had a bunch of issues with my eyes: - dry eyes from contact lenses; after years of wearing contacts my eyes finally rebelled and rejected every brand. It made me have red eyes, and I always looked like I was high as a kite. - I ended up getting LASIK, and my vision was originally 20-15 or something like that right after the surgery. But for some reason my left eye became 20-25, and it was annoying me. My original doctor swore up and down that it was still 20-20; the Lasik follow up doctors said the same. I knew my left eye wasn't 20-20 anymore because the damned letters were blurry and they weren't initially after the surgery. I was wondering if I was going crazy, but dr Nguyen was straight with me and said - 'Nope. It's 20-25 on the left but that's okay because it's pretty normal. I have gotten LASIK too and the same thing happened to me.' I believe the other doctors just lied. - One day, my right eye became red. Overnight. I thought I had way too much fun one weekend and didn't do anything. Yup I got made fun of at work - everyone asked me what I did over the weekend... blah blah blah ...Well, for some reason, the eye stayed red. For weeks. I ended up seeing my original doctor who prescribed a powerful steroid, which didn't do anything. I saw him again, and I don't remember what he did, but it didn't help. He didn't know what was the cause of the inflammation. I saw another doctor, a normal doctor - because my friends were wondering if I had jaundice or maybe got hepatitis from eating street food abroad. I saw another eye doctor. Finally, I saw Dr Nguyen. And she knew what it was right away. It's basically a sun burn in my eye. The precursor to surfer's eye. I spend a lot of time on the water sailing, windsurfing, wake boarding, and I never wore sun glasses because I always lost them in the water. So to summarize - Dr Nguyen is awesome. I am Chinese and have trouble finding glasses that fit my face because the bridge of my nose is low. This place had a nice selection of frames that fit my face. It was a bonus that the glasses were very reasonably priced, even if you don't have insurance. My eyes are in fairly good condition and previous opthomologists (from other states) have told me not to buy prescription glasses and just get readers from walmart. Dr Nguyen wrote a very similar script this time. Thus, I was surprised when she suggested i purchase a pair of progressive glasses (about $300) and a second pair of sunglasses (also about $300) for outdoor use. I usually don't write reviews, but I HAD TO give her one star (even one star is a waste, I would give her none if I could) because I wanted to inform people that she's not the optometrist people should visit. She is very, very mean with indifferent attitude towards a patient. When I went to her office couple weeks ago because of some issues I had with my eyes, I sensed that she is totally unrespectful and even selfish. My experience at her office was terrible and I would absolutely not recommend anyone to visit her office. Find other nicer and warm-hearted optometrists!
