We came to Step Ahead to look for a foot solution to my problem: heel spurs, achilles tendonitis, and plantar faciitis. I saw some Hoka shoes on sale at Ross in my size but my husband encouraged me to get my feet looked at by someone before just buying shoes, that way I know what my issues are and how to resolve them. My husband had gone to Step Ahead in the past and got fitted for Oofos, realizing he should have been wearing a size down actually. We walked in, and Patti, the owner, was helping another customer but said she'd be with us as right away. As promised, she hurried over and got to work assessing my feet. I told her my problems, and she took a print of my foot to see where my pressure points were and to measure my arches - this is a service I was hoping for and WOULD NOT get at Ross or the Ultimate Foot Store in Pearl Ridge! She was extremely apologetic for not having any shoes in my size and made that very clear more than once - she didn't try to sell me shoes in another size like another Yelper claimed. I never once got the feeling she was trying to scam me into a shoe that didn't fit. I think she's eager to find a solution that works for folks and also passionate about educating people on why they have aches and pains and how proper footwear and arch alignment can help. She fit me with an orthotic that was shaped to my foot. Was it custom tailored exactly to my foot? No, but it was the right size to support my arch, which I appreciated. When I go to other stores, I have to guess what insert might work for me and probably guess wrong. I appreciated her measuring me and recommending the right solution. I ended up getting the harder, more supportive insert for my shoes at home. She told me that Hokas, etc. are great, but they are essentially just padded shoes. You can put all the padding you want in a shoe, but until you get the right arch support, you aren't going to fix the problem. The telling point for me was when she took the sole out of a Hoka and put the insert in there for me to try on! (It was a size too small for me, but I was able to try it on to try on the insert). I appreciated her honesty, and it put my mind at ease about "getting the perfect shoe." The price for the orthotic was $200 - yes, on the pricey side, but honestly, a pair of Hokas is around that and doesn't provide the arch support I need to fix my problems. Also, they have a 2 year guarantee so if they crack you can come back and she will replace them. But she said they could last a lifetime if you take care of them. To me $200 is much more reasonable that custom made inserts that can run in the thousands and just a bit more than pricey padded gym shoes. My husband also got a pair which she gave us 50% off. She measured his arches too and said the inserts will help with his walk, which currently his feet sort of flare out to the sides when he walks. There was another customer in there too who said he's been wearing his for 5 years and even pulled them out of his boot to show us! He says they really work to alleviate pain. She gave us wearing instructions and talked us through everything else like how many hours to wear on a graduated scale, how long it will take to build up our arch muscles, etc. I am only dinging a star because she has a limited inventory of shoes and slippers and keeps beating herself up about it. I'm sure it's tough to stock all the sizes, but people are hungry for good supportive footwear as well as inserts, so I recommend her stocking up on more sizes. Unfortunately folks just won't want to part with $200 bucks for an insert, even though it's more advantageous, and would rather buy a pair of gym shoes. Overall, I'd come back here for my foot needs. Her personalized service and attentiveness is reallllly hard to find nowadays. The fact that she can run this store for so many years amongst the competition and Amazon, etc. should be a testament that her products really work. read more

Patti from Step Ahead was very helpful in assisting my son and I with finding the right support for our individual needs. She took an imprint of our feet to determine the best support options. Each reccomendation is made according to the persons individual need. Just be aware that if your feet need 2 different orthotics, like mine did, you will be charged for each pair separately! My cost would have been $400 for 1 pair since I needed a different orthotic in each shoe. Patti gave us a deal by finding a slightly used orthotic to offer with one of the new ones so she wouldn't have to split up to pair. I paid $200 instead of $400. My son was lucky because he needed the same support in both shoes so his cost was $200 no deals needed. We also had to but inserts for $20 each that are needed to cover the orthotics. Patti runs the store alone and does a good job at it, but of course she is only one person and can only assist 1 person at a time. I feel that she would benefit from hiring at least 1 employee to assist her especially on busier days like the weekend. Plus she is open 7 days a week! The inserts are pricey but good quality. I seen other competitors that offer the same service offer great promotions, another thing Patti may want to consider to stay competitive. One thing I would highly recommend is to give free inserts with orthotic purchase. The orthotics cost $200 plus so offering the inserts as a free gift with purchase instead of charging $20 seems like it would be a good deal. She consistently gave me shoes that were the wrong size, tried to get me to buy her insoles instead of using the ones that were custom made for me by my orthopedist, and was dismissive about my concerns with the shoes sliding off my foot when I walked. Husband needs orthotics. The spot we went to in Aina Haina was closed, and we were in the Pearlridge area so we went to see Patty. Patty does a presentation and takes some foot prints to see where the trouble spots are and then makes recommendations. She knows her stuff when it comes to feet! Hubs' other orthotics were softer, but Patty recommended some harder/higher orthotics based on the prints she had him make for her. She recommended easing into wearing them, but hubs is a construction guy and there's no way he's stopping in the middle of a job to take out his foot support. We got a discount on the second pair for his other boots, and let me just say, it's worth every penny to not have to hear about how his feet hurt or his back hurts because of his feet. If you are planning on a quick in and out visit and are a first time customer with Patty, that just doesn't work like that. I'm surprised this place has such a low rating. When I entered this store, I was quickly greeted by Patty, the owner. I was the only person there at the time so I didn't feel rushed or pressured to buy anything. I was impressed with Patty; she's very knowledgeable. Patty explained that my four arches (some only recognize three), had collapsed and that the plantar fascia muscle that normally takes the stress and carries the weight, was inflamed. I'll be honest, I know damn well it's because I gained a lot of weight! I'm happy Patty never said that. After educating me on what the heck was going on with my foot for the last two years, she then had me step on this ink pad. On top of the ink pad is large piece of paper so that you can get a foot print and see where the stress of your weight is being distributed, and that the arches really are screwed up! She then recommended the right arch supports according to the size of my foot and explained how to properly use them without making things worse. I think that may have been the issue for some of the reviews. And yes, they can be a little pricey, but it was worth it to me; I was tired of suffering. I mean, if you can pay for that PS5 or spend all that money on your hair and nails...why not pay that price to invest in your physical health. Just sayin'... Some people have stated that the arch supports made things worse for them, but did you use them accordingly to how Patty, or other employees, directed you to? I am. They're working fine. The pain will not go away in a day. The arch will not be rebuilt in a day. This will probably take a couple years; you can't rush it. How do I know it will work? Because a close friend of mine also came to Step Ahead years ago, and his condition was worse than mine. After a couple of years, no more pain, arch no longer collapsed, and he no longer needs to use the arch inserts. This place is located in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center, across from Pearl Ridge Mall. I forgotten who had assisted me, but they really know their stuff(a wonderful woman who is moving back to the Big island). I work in food service and I am on my feet for 10 hours straight. My feet, knees, and back were in so much pain from the long hours on my feet. They fitted me to the right arch support. It took a while for me to get use to it, once I did I felt much better. I went into the store Jan 26 to get a new shoes and a good pair for my trip to Japan I know I would be walking a lot and have a bad knee I wanted something I heard great things about . Went into the store they was helping me pick mine out and a pair for my dad as well . We got him 2 pairs bought it that day , my style wasn't in stock and I wanted a white/black pair . So they informed me they could order perfect . For custom order you got to pay upfront. They get the next shipment on Saturday so it would be in time for my trip and explained all that to them . Rather support a local store then order it online right .. So called me a week later saying they got the black/black in (not what I ordered ) she said oh ok they will have it on the next shipment . Ok that a week before my trip it be fine it be here .. the following week no call . I called and they said "oh sorry it didn't come in , why don't you just get a different shoe ? No I want the one I special ordered in " also she then tried to just talk me into buying another brand so I could have it for my trip , there no return on my special order so I would just be buying 2 pairs for them . The week of my trip is Herrera and no calls from them . I call them and there answer was "all we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best " So it been a month and they don't bother to call to give me updates on when I'm getting my order beside them just trying to get me to take a black/black (not my order ) . Originally planned on going to Ultimate Foot Store today to have husband try Oofos slippers. He's tried many and finds them all too hard. Called UFS first and they no longer sell Oofos as they have their own brand now. Called Step Ahead and they said they have only 2 in the basic flip flop style in Men's, Size 9, Black. She was so nice to offer holding one since I told her we'll be there asap. When I got there, it was exactly the one we had in mind. She was going to ring up the purchase and I told her can husband try it on first? He's in the car and can't come in the store cuz the slippers he has on, the straps are broken. Talk about the desperate need for the right slippers. He reparked our car right in front the store and the gal came out to have him try it on. Bingo-he loved it! I stepped into the Step Ahead foot store hoping to get help with alleviating the pain in my ankle. Susan, the sales person, was very kind and willing to help. I ended up purchasing several items including a slip on shoes which was comfortable, though I must admit I was only able to take several steps around the store to get a feel for it (small store). I need to note here that Susan did not verbally mention that "all sales are final", nor did I notice any signs that said such. After wearing the shoe for less than an hour, (wore it from the store to my car, then from the car to the front door at home) the shoe started digging into the back of my heel which was very uncomfortable. As I got out of the car, the shoes continued to dig into the back of my heal. Took it off as soon as I walked in the door then put the shoes back in it's bag. I called Step Ahead first thing the next day, spoke to Patty, inquiring about a refund or to exchange the shoes for something else. Patty told me that I could bring the shoes in so that she could take a look to see what's wrong with it. (There was nothing wrong with the shoes, it just did not work for me.) Patty then she told me, "we don't give refunds and how could you expect to get a refund when you already stretched out the shoe." I spent over $300.00 at Step Ahead yesterday. I purchased a slip on rubber slipper from Patty at Step Ahead awhile ago. I left it in the sun and it shrank almost two full sizes. I took it back and Patty said that I shouldn't have left it in the sun and to throw it away. I told Patty that I should have been told not to leave it in the sun when I purchased it. She said that she was probably busy with other customers and that's why she didn't warn me. All Patty was willing to do was to let the manufacturer know that it shrank (which she already knew). She became very defensive and irritated with me. I asked if she could give me a discount if I bought another one. Patty was willing to give me a $5 discount, then raised it to $10 for a $50 slipper. Patty went on to say that she cannot give away her products. I was not willing to pay $40 for a slipper from an owner who treated me badly. Long over-due review. Patti helped my mom and I with the consultation for orthotics. After over an hour of tests, trying on different pairs of orthotics, and being pressured by Patti, my mom and I purchased two pairs of orthotics for our plantar fasciitis. My mom and I decided to use the orthotics later that day and it pretty much made our plantar worse. Excruciating pain. You ever felt so much in pain, you started getting goosebumps?! Yes...That bad. I called Step-Ahead, spoke to Patti and she said to come bring it in and she'll help us out. We went there the following day, and by then, my mom and I were convinced these orthotics that cost us over $300 were not for us, especially if it's going to be THAT painful. So after seeing what Patti had to offer us, (different size orthotics, etc), I just wanted our money back. I looked all around the register, the walls, the receipt I had for the pairs, the entire store. NO REFUND POLICY DISPLAYED ANYWHERE. She refused to give us our money back, and then started to raise her voice in anger in front of all her customers. I was very frustrated but I had to put my foot down. No orthotics, especially after spending almost $300+ should be making my feet hurt more than it already is! I called American Express immediately at the scene and told the representative the situation. Luckily, the transaction was still pending so it wasn't finalized. Patti and I went back and forth, she didn't budge for a long time, yelling at me that it was my decision to get them. But all in all, it was her that persuaded me on and on that it was the perfect fit of orthotics for my feet. She eventually ignored me altogether and gave me my refund & receipt. Do not go to this place! They do not care about the customer, and they don't stand by their product. I got my daughter fitted for inserts for her running shoes, they felt fine for her in the store however when she ran with them they caused her extreme pain. I took them back to the store within 7days of purchasing them and guess what?! NO REFUNDS. The thing that angers me about that policy is that there is no sign in the store and it Doesn't say it on the receipt either!! Is that legal? It's definitely unethical! Whenever I see their TV ads, I want to throw something at the TV. Luckily, only lost $130. Some lost way more. Went there because they claim they have arch supports for women's sandals and open-toed shoes. Did not think walking across an ink pad would be a true assessment of my arches' conditions. Then when Patti came right out of the back of the store with my "custom" supports, should have left on da spot. But I bit, bought them, and took them home, willing to give it a try. She offered me a second pair at a discount, but I resisted. FIRST TIME I wore them, my knees started hurting, big time. Could barely walk. Soon as I took the supports out, my knees felt fine. Never used them again. And it's not because I'm unaccustomed to arch supports. Been buying arch supports for closed shoes, Birkenstocks, and slippers with arch support for years with no problems. Just wanted something that could be worn in a woman's dress sandal without showing. Should have stuck with the advice a podiatrist gave me years ago, just buy Spenco arch supports for about $30, sometimes less on-line. Been using them since 1996 and had no problems with heel spurs ever since. No longer care if their green covering shows in my dressy sandals. A wide selection of Spenco arch supports can be found at Go Bananas on Kapahulu and in Aiea. A limited supply has been available at The Ultimate Foot Store, though I have issues with the less than helpful staff and no longer shop there. And there's always Amazon. Not wild about Amazon, but out in the middle of the Pacific, sometimes it's the only option to find what you want or need. There must be other on-line sales options, as well. read more

Came here looking for knowledge and that is what we got! Jeff, Abira, and I caught the bus here so we did not have to worry about the awful parking in Pearl Kai Center (half of the reason for having 4 stars) Jeff's feet hurt almost all the time now since he started working. He saw the place and thought it'd be a great idea to ask them about why his feet are hurting and what could be done to help them. We were greeted by Ty, this really tall bald guy. He was soo friendly. He must've just gotten through helping another customer because his area was filled with slippers and shoes on the ground lol. He took a footprint of Jeffs feet and explained to him in detail what was going on with his foot. He had Jeff try on some slippers at first, but since Jeff was worried about his feet hurting at work, we moved onto the shoes. The shoes themselves are awesome. Then Ty put in some of those foot things to help realign the feet (did you know there are actually 4 arches instead of just 1 to your feet?) I took the bait and got my footprint and was shocked at how my weight is distributed. I learned I still have pretty good arches (=D) The other half of the problem - the price. For everything Jeff tried on, it would've come out to 500 bucks. He and I would come out to 1k. If we did not buy the shoes (140 each), it'd still be pricey. We really are considering going back because Jeff really really liked how his feet felt in the shoes. What I loved was that Ty did not try to sell us the shoe. He told us if we have shoes, there's no reason to buy theirs. His job is to sell the things that'll help correct our feet, and that's the foot things (LOL I forgot what they're called!) I have diabetes and have problems with feeling and circulation. I could feel the foot* (ohh goodness, i had it as 'food' LOL) thing kinda massaging my feet while I walk, so that was amazing. If you can put down a lot of money, this is a good place to have good shoes. read more

Buyer beware! Saleswoman talked me into the firm arch supports for my running shoes, insole to replace the one in my runners and the flexible arch supports for sandals. Tested the flexible ones in sandals and sling backs at home. Saleswoman said they wouldn't be noticeable...NOT TRUE...actually it's pretty ugly. However they are fine for my running shoes. That leaves me with the unneeded insole ($25) and firm supports that have never been used. And a receipt that says no returns. YUCK. read more

Be very careful they make promises they do not keep about their return policy, they do not keep their word and it seems will say anything to close a sale. Saleman kept claiming they are "medical grade" orthtic inserts not so. Some of the products may help some people some of the time its hard to say. I told the sales person I must get my MD to approve any orthotic inserts and he said I could return them if not approved. Then switched his story to exchange or store credit only the next day. I can not use their over priced misrepresented products. Note to self always look up reviews before purchasing!!! Yikes. They also have a number od BBB complaints. I was so excited to check out this store. It quickly turned. It was approximately 215-230p on a Monday. We (son and me) walked in lady was on the phone. She did not greet us in any way. No hi, hello or even a head nod or a wave of the hand. She continued on the phone. We were the only ones in the store. My son and I browsed around looking and checking out the shoes. She still stayed on the phone. I walked towards the desk and still no response or any communication from her. My son finally sat on the sofa to wait while I stood there shocked. Still no response. The owner definitely has a colorful personality, she is passionate about what she does. I didn't feel bullied into buying her products. But I get why people may have felt that way. I have been a customer of Red Wing, and The Ultimate shoe store, their customer service was pretty terrible, and they didn't have my size. In the past, I have received great service, and "yes" when I'm dropping $200+ on shoes, and purchasing additional inserts - I expect to be treated like a valued customer. I spent $403 at Step Ahead, got what I wanted (a shoe that fit), plus the inserts. The hard inserts (orthotics $200) felt noticeably different, like I was somehow putting less weight on my feet while walking. The jury is still out, on the inserts, as I bought these yesterday, lol. I bought for my daughter the ' orthotics' in lieu of real orthotics. The step ahead orthotics caused more pain and discomfort after wearing them a day. In the store they seemed to work. The SILLY keep your balance test is a gimmick. We could not return the orthotics and was issued a store credit. What a waste. Came here because I needed to get shoe inserts. From the minute we walked in we were being pressured to get a product. I tried it out and liked it but the girl kept trying to get us to buy more stuff. She wanted us to purchase shoes, slippers, etc. Very pricey product. These people over charge for these orthotic inserts and make you buy two pairs as well as insoles that you will never use unless you wear running shoes all day everyday. They don't pair well with sling backs or any other dress shoe that covers your toes. Oh! But they say they do! Lies!! No return policy is posted AND not even mentioned! Poor salesmanship and rude behavior after finding out I can't return these overpriced inserts, especially when I only need one pair. I don't recommend this place, what so ever. While shopping for arch support shoes for my girlfriend, one of the salesmen while talking with another customer came off as rude and basically told the customer that if she was only looking for a shoe that was recommended by her doctor(which the salesman wasn't selling) that she shouldn't waste his time. I have never heard someone speak to a customer in that way. I guarantee I'm not going back to that store. We just walked out after hearing that. RUN AWAY! Or if your feet hurt as bad as mine then walk, limp, or have someone carry you elsewhere! Please read through these reviews, the only good ones are from 2014 or older. I'm going to just give it to you straight. I am going to attempt to keep my opinion out of this review as I think the 1 star shows enough, and it's 1 only because 0 is not an option. I am not just a disgruntled customer looking to make waves or drama or get any response from the store. The visit to the store started off fine, the lady was a bit frazzled having just gotten to work. She 'measured' my arch by having me walk across an inkpad and came out with 2 sizes of inserts to try on.... I tried them both and decided one size worked better than the other. Decided that I need something like this to help my feet we went ahead with the transaction but suffered from a bit of sticker shock. After deliberating with my husband we decided on which 1 to get and if it does well to come back for the other (each size has 2 different inserts for different activity styles) So the price came down to a reasonable amount, which for the purposes of this we will say X amount. Which was still WAY more than I had ever anticipated paying but I tell you I have suffered for almost a year so I am willing to give it a try. Lady was not very happy with us and was quite rude since I guess she probably works on commission. The next morning we checked our bank account and X amount had been charged then a 2nd charge we will call Y. We promptly call to find out what had happened. In a very rude way we were told that she had made a mistake and undercharged us and so she used the machine to charge us Y amount to make up for her mistake. UUMMM excuse me?! I understand you made a mistake but you can not just charge an account without authorization. We spoke with another person at the store who suggested we call the owner. The owner was not very friendly either and after getting all of the information said she would call us back. Well here we are almost a week later and not a single phone call. This was an excellent store. I bought two pairs of Hoka shoes. They feels great on my feet. My spouse is loving in. With her feet conditions I know this shoes will help her walk or run with no pain. It should be 0 Star Owner was rude and did not keep her word after she made the sale. Promised 50% of 2nd pair that cost $200 & 30% of the 3rd pair that was $180; but she didn't honor her word. She also rang me incorrectly for the cushions; should have cost $60 but rang it at $180. I didn't catch this till after I left the store & had to return. Rudeness didn't stop - I finally said just refund me...she replied... "you wasted my time!" The story is longer than this but will end the complaining here. I like to support local companies BUT from hereon I will be buying this product on-line. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THAT STORE. There is good that came out of this! I found the product on-line at My Healthy Foot. in California - the price is $200 for 3 PAIRS..... she sells it $200 for 1... So in the end thank you rude owner as I will be saving and spending my money elsewhere...and btw...The owner of My Healthy Foot appreciates it and thanks you! read more
