Stemar has been absolutely awesome. Three days before we were going overseas for three weeks my condo flooded. I was very concerned how how everything would work out without being in town. Gabriel Beas a manager from Stemar was in frequent communication and easily reached which was huge with us being so far away. Then when Zaray Ramos took over as project manager the excellence continued. She communicated frequently , often with photos for project status. She was always easy to reach, her timelines accurate and a pleasure to work with. And their technicians did an awesome job of restoring the condo. Really impressive. DO NOT USE this company! They already have a citation from the CSLB. Unfortunately, I only hired them based on a recommendation. They are only good at small tasks like painting or drywall installation. However, with more complicated work, they used unqualified subcontractors or handyman when it comes to electrical work, plumbing, or framing. Their work was done backwards, short cuts were taken, they billed me for work that wasn't done, do inferior work, charged me when I bought material, charged me for other work in a different area, bought excessive amount of material (use for another job), brought additional cabinets that were not even from my kitchen to paint, charged me a storage fee in my own home, left large debris behind, and created safety hazards. I needed to hire a licensed plumbing, electrician, and a flooring company to correct their work. Gabriel and his crew did a great job on my linen closet last year. At the time I had asked him about doing my kitchen counters and backsplash and he said he would get back to me. Fast forward to this year and after a couple of phone calls, texts and messages over a couple of months he finally got back to me came by again and a week later sent me a quote. When I called him the next day I was told his quartz guy was going to come by to make the template and then we could pick the slab I wanted. That was a month ago. My wife and I recently purchased our first home in La Mesa. We were very frustrated to discover two significant undisclosed issues with the home that were not apparent in our walk throughs or home inspection. Water would seep through the living room concrete slab-on-grade during rains and the living room had a pungent smell of cat urine, which would require considerable effort and cost to remediate. Unfortunately, our home warranties did not cover the issues and our real estate agent was unresponsive. Additional consultation with two lawyers indicated we would likely not be successful taking legal action, so we ended up being stuck footing the bill. Fortunately, we found Stemar! We worked with Gabriel Beas who was very professional, responsive, and helpful. Stemar worked with us and within our budget to develop cost-effective, practical, and efficient solutions to successfully remediate the water intrusion and cat urine issues. The remediation included installing a new French drain along the outside of the house, resetting existing storm drains for proper flow in the backyard, removing roots from existing storm drains, removing and replacing interior dry wall and the exterior door frame for urine odor treatment, leveling the floor, and reusing existing materials where possible to reduce costs, among other improvements. This is the worst company! I had the displeasure of dealing with these unprofessional scammers. They charged a ridiculous amount for what was a fairly simple flooring job. You had to threaten court for them to decide on what would be a fair market value. Then after that they installed the flooring poorly and refuse to fix the problem. All they do is try to appease you on the phone and lie to you about their customer satisfaction. Stay as far away from these people as you can. read more

Stemar Restoration, Inc., owned by Steve Marron, was contracted to replace damaged carpeting in my home and a sample of that carpeting was sent to Itel for analysis. Rebekah Weir, of Rhino Floor Covering, also owned by Mr. Marron, was sent to my house to do what was necessary to get the job done. I was told by Rebekah Weir that carpeting of the same quality was not available locally, that she could find it elsewhere, but it would take longer to get. I found no fault with that and it was my expectation that she would follow through with this plan. Unfortunately, the carpeting installed by Rhino is of inferior quality to the carpeting it replaced. I sent a sample to Itel to be able to accurately compare carpets and the difference in face weight alone is 31.7oz to 23.4oz.. Steve Marron, speaking for both Stemar and Rhino, said I had told his representative that I would accept a carpet of inferior quality if it could be installed faster than carpeting of like quality. That is patently untrue. Not only was I never given that choice to make, I would never, under any circumstances, have chosen speed over quality. That simply would not have been an option for me. When I met with Mr. Marron he said that there had been a problem in communication and he offered me a sum of $565.20 to settle the matter. I refused his offer and told him that I stood by my request to have the inferior carpeting removed and replaced with carpeting of like kind and quality as was originally promised. I have since filed complaints with The Better Business Bureau and The Contractors State License Board. I have also requested that Mr. Marron arrange to have our dispute settled by arbitration, as allowed for in our contract. If you are handed his card by an adjuster from Wawanesa or any other insurance company just hand it back and say 'no thank you'... Binding arbitration found in my favor and the house was re-carpeted to my satisfaction. read more

Their crew was very considerate as I had just gotten out of the hospital. They completed their work as quickly and as discreetly as possible so as not to disturb me too much. If I could give a lower score i would. DO NOT USE THIS CONTRACTOR! A 3+ week flood repair job turned into a 3 month pain. Little communication, inconsistent work, and lies. I called up Steve to let him know that I smelled pot in the house after his workers left. He finally came over 2 days later after they painted, so the smell was gone. I was told that there was going to be a lockbox for the key to my house, instead they put the key under a plant. I must have had to have them come back a dozen times to touch the repairs. When they put in the new sink they threw out the ice maker water supply line, then said it was never there. I was supposed to get carpet in the hallway and hard floor in one room. But they did the hall in hard floor leaving no material for the room, so they carpeted it. When i called Steve out on it he lied about it till i showed him the contract. I'm sure there is alot more, but you get my point. read more

The job took over 7 months (originally projected 2 months) and even then the job was not completed. I had to hire multiple people to complete the job at considerable extra cost. We had a house fire on October 15, 2008. Stemar came out with the Travelers insurance adjuster as the recommended fire remediation company as well as gave a bid to rebuild the home. Since our insurance company brought them along, we figured they knew what they were doing. They also bid on the rebuild of the home that they estimated at $236,000 (the final cost and settlement was nearly $600,000). After the fire, my family and I were so traumatized, we hired them to take are of the contents portion of the recovery process. They were supposed to separate all items between "salvageable" and "non-salvageable", document each item no matter how small and no matter which category the item fell in both in writing and photographic documentation on-site. They would throw away non-salvageable items and salvageable items would be returned to us after being "de-smoked" and cleaned when we were ready to receive them. We lost everything in the fire and just tried to keep our heads above water the months afterward. It wasn't until December 2008 that we started to realize something was very wrong. It became clear that they had no idea where our things were that were "salvageable". They told us that the project manager was on a "fishing trip" and couldn't be contacted who knew the whereabouts of our belongings. It wasn't until many weeks later that they located our things in a storage container. We also learned that they threw away our things without any kind of documentation. Being totally outraged with how they handled our project, we fired them and hired another restoration company that did a great job. Steve Marron, owner of Stemar, made the handover of our things to the new company very difficult. We soon found out why. When we opened up the container, our few things that survived were covered in soot and smelled terribly of smoke. They hadn't "de-smoked" or cleaned anything. So the things that did survive the fire had to be thrown away after spending many months in this container all the while being marinated in smoke and ash. After the new company took over, we were shocked to receive a bill of $24,000. The new company only charged $5,000. The invoice included fraudulent items such as charging us for THREE containers and storage when it was only in fact 1/2 a container that we eventually found. They charged us for implausible man hours (that we can verify because we found the project manager who wasn't on a fishing trip, but actually had left the company and worked for the new company), they charged for cleaning that never happened, "de-smoking" that never happened. We met with Steve Marron from Stemar to confront him with the fraudulent items, and I have his confession on audio tape that he had "dropped the ball". We asked him to adjust his invoice to work actually performed, and he agreed and said he would. We never heard from him again, we assumed because he didn't want to get in trouble with the law. It was a year later that we received a letter from the Tax Assessor's office that Stemar placed a mechanic's lien on our house for nearly $20,000 after not hearing from him after the February meeting. It didn't matter since you can't place a mechanic's lien on a home more than six months after the job had finished. All I can say is that Stemar turned our tragedy into an even bigger nightmare. I also found out that the only reason Travelers brought him to us was because Steve Marron used to be an adjuster at Travelers so he had obviously contacts there. If you have had fire or floor damage, I hope you get to read this before you make the same mistake. I have all the evidence to corroborate everything I have written here. I had even worse experiences with all the other vendors Travelers brought to me after the fire. All I can say is no matter how traumatized you are after a fire or flood, do your homework and don't sign anything until you know who you're signing with! read more
