Stella is cool little restaurant/bar hung off the corner of the Westin Austin. It's a bit see-and-be-seen tragically hipster--but what isn't in CaliAustin these days--so roll with it, baby. I came in yesterday for a libation and to kill a few minutes while waiting for my friend to arrive for an event at Antone's across the street. I found a seat at the corner of the bar next to a whippet service dog with the most soulful eyes perched comfortably on the bar stool next to mine. Yes, Austin, 2019. My personal bartender Jennifer was quick to acknowledge my arrival and provide a menu. I don't normally drink beer, but last night chose a Stella Artois, seeing as I was at Stella about about to see two bands with Cajun-esque roots. My beer was served in a frosted glass with an expert pour. My sojourn at Stella was brief, as my friend arrived sooner-than-expected. Talk about slamming that Stella! But I'd come back in a heartbeat, for drinks or more. Despite the hipster, I liked the overall vibe and the friendliness of the staff. 4.8 STARS! We set brunch reservations from Google / Open Table and showed up 30min early on a Sunday morning and they took us right in. Lucky us! Many more had to wait. I ordered scrambled eggs and they were cooked to perfection with a little juice left in the eggs while being perfectly seasoned with salt. Along with eggs I ordered chicken and waffles. It comes with two pieces of white meat and two of dark, boneless. The chicken is amazing! Not greasy, seasoned very well and tender. The waffle is fresh and soft and super tasteful. We ordered the biscuits because that's what everyone loves. Dipping each in gravy or warm syrup I couldn't decide if I liked the biscuit or the waffle better. Both were awesome. The biscuit is super buttery and the top is salted with kosher salt. This is a cool combo! The inside is super soft. My wife thought the avacado toast was "OK" and she added two poached eggs that were cooked perfectly. The side of bacon needs improving. A brunch spot like this should serve quality thick cut bacon instead of thin, fat filled, flimsy bacon. We had a pair of mixed drinks to start. They were similar to a Paloma Mule served neat that included ginger beer, grapefruit juice, lime juice, nectar and Tequila with salt on the rim. Super perfect upgrade over a typical mimosa. Food was generally tasty but to me there's more to a multi-hundred dollar dining experience than whether my short ribs are delicious. I came here for my niece's graduation. We had a reservation at 6pm on a Saturday but didn't need it. Was empty. Wait staff was friendly but underwhelming. Example: they had a "House Bottle Cabernet" which I asked about. Where's it from? California. Yes, so am I. It's a big state. We decided to try it. Order taken. He returned and said it had been replaced with another Cabernet that was "normally more expensive". Great, I love a good deal but I don't normally judge wine only on price. We said OK. The wine came. It was from Washington. It was fine. But the experience of getting there could have been better. Between us all we had biscuits, a charcuterie platter, short ribs, a pork chop, etc. It was all tasty. Nothing I'd say I needed to write home about. Visited with some co-workers on a work trip for Sunday brunch after we saw rave reviews of their #16 Biscuits. Essentially, we came for the biscuits and stayed for everything else! The food was great, the vibes were there, and the service was friendly. Usually, for me, Sunday brunch is the best excuse to day drink copiously, but on this particular day I was just looking to eat and relax. Seeing their smoothie/juice options on their brunch menu solidified my choice and I did a little happy dance because that was exactly what I was in the mood for instead of mimosas or Bloody Marys. I opted for the Mixed Berry smoothie and it was delicious. It was a little pricey - $7 for a small glass, so I made sure to drink every last drop. For the table, we shared the deviled eggs which were creamy and amazing. I was also feeling an extra bit hungry so I ordered the Avocado Toast along with the chorizo & potato tacos. The Avocado Toast had a little too much greens on top and needed some salt, but that one slice was enough to fill me up - lots of avocado! The tacos were flavorful and had a little kick. After following-up on Yelp (of-course) I made a reservation. First I have to say that their staff is very friendly and very accommodating. I changed my reservation numbers a day before and when we arrived...oops...but they were super friendly and helpful! I had the biscuits and the Stella Burger. The biscuits were warm and flakey! I can still taste them in my mouth. NOTE: do not eat too many before your entree, or you'll be full! In regard to the Stella Burger, it was cooked perfectly and was juicy! Their menu seems to change, so be sure to give them a call~ The overall atmosphere is perfect for a group dinner. Not too fancy and not too casual either. I've been to Stella San Jac several times and the food is always good. Customer service is always good as well. My last visit was on a Sunday around 7pm. The evening food menu is slim pickings. I ordered a burger that came with fries and a side dish of deviled eggs. The fries were nice and crunchy. The burger and the deviled eggs were good. My party of four food came out shortly after we ordered. The restaurant had the lights dimmed, which made the ambiance nice and chill. The restaurant is a nice size, which includes a bar. The food is a little pricey, but to be expected since the restaurant is inside of an hotel. You can valet park, park in a lot or find street parking. read more

Staying at the Westin for a weekend getaway, one of my elite perks is a choice of points or complimentary breakfast. I'm a point whore, but this time I chose to go with complimentary breakfast at Stella San Jac, the hotel restaurant. After having breakfast there today, I was impressed with my decision. The interior is quite nice and comfortable. Our server was great and didn't shy away from offering her favorites when asked. I had the Chicken & Waffle and a taste of my wife's Lemon Buttermilk Pancake, both were delicious. The Chicken & Waffle was my preference, tender chicken and fluffy waffle. The Bourbon Maple syrup accompanying them was fantastic! Both dishes were beautifully presented, definitely beyond their typical diner equivalents. I believe Stella San Jack earned an almost perfect score based on ambience and great food. If you're staying at the Westin you're in luck- it's inside located on the ground floor. Creative food and it's so good! I asked for recs from our lady and she was on point! The Lemon Buttermilk Pancakes was amazing. Fresh Blueberries on top but it is speckled with blueberries inside too so when you slice it just just a hint in there. I think the Lemon Syrup I think is the key. Any other syrup I deem it too sweet. Four good size ones! Company had the Chicken and Waffle with Bourbon Maple syrup, country gravy and fried herbs. Equally yummy! We had their Energize and Inspire. Both are fresh pressed juice. The former is carrot, orange and ginger. The latter beet, pomegranate and coconut. Get both! We were able to be seated at 9:50am without a reservation on this foggy Sunday morning, so that's the first positive for Stella San Jac. The decor is modern and the dress is casual. People drift in from the Westin and the touristy downtown area. It's across from Antone's could be a casual stop before a show. The service was 3 stars, which is unfortunate because the food is fantastic. It could have been just our server, but we didn't get water and the cappuccino I ordered was forgotten about until we asked a second time. The other servers who stopped by to ask if we needed more coffee and brought our food were much friendlier than our server. The food: yum! The biscuits are "famous" for a reason. They are really good biscuits. If you read any of my reviews, I love biscuits and judge them harshly. These pass the test! My wife enjoyed the avocado toast, but it's just one slice so if you're hungry get something else (the biscuits) too. The grapefruit curd parfait was really good. Hearty enough to eat as a meal after starting with the biscuits. Everything about it was good, but the curd was like no other and very tasty. I would recommend it. I've been to Stella probably 8-10 times over the years. To be honest it always leaves me a little bit disappointed. It's one of those places that has so much potential but then always falls short. The best thing Stella has going for it is the interior. The dining room is really pretty and a great backdrop for a weekend brunch with friends. Unfortunately that's where the perfection stops. If you're coming here for breakfast or brunch you have to get the biscuits. It's one of their best sellers and there's a reason for it. Unfortunately, on more than one occasion I've ordered the biscuits and they've never arrived. Luck of the draw I guess... My most recent visit was perhaps the most disappointing. Our appetizer never arrived, the coffee I ordered came out cold... not lukewarm, but cold. The burger my partner ordered was dry/tough and came with cheese when he ordered it without. The waiter seemed to be covering the whole restaurant himself so I do not entirely fault him as he was working his tail off. My tacos on the other hand were quite good and I would order these again. I was sad to learn they no longer carry the short rib grilled cheese which was definitely the best of their brunch options. I keep coming back hoping for more... but overall I would say Stella San Jac is a run of the mill hotel restaurant. read more

Too early to hit the bar scene so escorted to a table to enjoy brunch. The place was quiet with a few people eating. Ordered a Mimosa and deciding what to eat. This place is very elegant and pet friendly. I decided to order a plate with a tiny egg on top of pork ribs with a nice sauce and lettuce greens. My wife ordered a braised short rib with mashed sweet potato. The place is nice and bright for those who wish to open up their laptops to work. I just spend some time enjoying my Mimosa and studying my itinerary for the day on my phone. Our waiter was very nice and chatted with us learning why we were in town. Soon our food arrived and very nicely presented. The tiny egg was very tasty and figured may have been a small bird like quail. The pork ribs were also small but the taste was amazing. My plate was considered a light meal. I pretty much cleaned my plate where I was impressed with the chef's preparation. We were staying at the Westin for a weekend getaway and used our elite benefit for breakfast - and so glad we did! Began with coffee; they also have a variety of fresh pressed juice concoctions which is a nice add. They have a nice selection of smaller dishes such as avocado toast or donut holes as well as larger dishes that lend to breakfast or more of a lunch Kids went with Pecan French toast which was huge and more than enough for two. I enjoyed the Salmon Eggs Benedict which was good, a generous portion, but it could have stood to be a tad warmer and the arugula side salad was way too salty . My husband had the chorizo tacos - again very generous portion that could easily feed two and he enjoyed the dish. Lovely setting and great central downtown location. Overrated and disappointing. We came in on Sunday for brunch based on the Yelp reviews, and were excited that it wasn't too crowded. Sadly we found out why...service was super slow and food really wasn't that great. Ambiance: nice and clean seeing with plenty of seating Food: My wife got the oatmeal and avocado toast while I tried the chicken fried steak. = Oatmeal was just whatevs. = Avocado toast was also just whatevs. Small portion. - Chicken fried steak was disappointing. It came out over cooked and beef was very chewy and fried part was too hard. The potatoes that came with it were also quite hard (not crispy). Flavor itself was also not memorable. I had to load it up with pepper to help give it some flavor. Service: The waitress was nice when we saw her. Maybe it was just the timing, but our order took forever. For the food above, we waited a good 30-40 minutes which seems ridiculous since they're so simple. Probably the best service I've had in Austin all year! My waitress Laurel was absolutely amazing as she was prompt, attentive, friendly & offered great suggestions in everything. I started with the deviled eggs which were so good I didn't even Easter time taking a picture. As for entrees go beef definitely dominates here as you wouldn't go wrong with the short rib that literally melts in your mouth or the wagyu beef burger which offers highly quality ingredients but with classic flavors. As for drinks the Stella spritzer is a must as it's light, refreshing and goes great on a hot summer day. The only downfall here is the parking as the restaurant is in the Westin hotel downtown so pretty much your only options are valet or fighting for street parking which can be a bit challenging on the weekends so I might recommend taking an Uber if you can. read more

We are Marriott Platinum members, which entitles us to free breakfast when staying in many Marriott properties including Westin. It usually includes continental breakfast, but at this property you can choose a beverage and one entree item from breakfast/brunch menu - amazing Every single item that we ordered (classic breakfast, grapefruit parfait, chicken and waffles, Stella burger) was not only delicious, but also beautifully presented! The hashbrowns in the American breakfast - the best I've ever tasted! And just look at this beautiful yogurt parfait (see the pics). The service was impeccable at all times. Crispy Brussels sprouts with candied jalapeños - note to self: Brussels sprouts and candied jalapeños are both awesome but they do NOT go together. Big, big no. BLT salad - nothing of major note but they did add a TON of bacon, so thanks for that. Fried avocado salad - fantastic fried avocado, fresh salad, nice dressing. Beef short rib, green apple slaw, sub potato gratin - short rib was well seasoned, tender, and savory, green apple slaw was a truly lovely delicious surprise, but the potato gratin needed salt (salt... seriously) and much more. So bland. Berkshire pork chop, crispy brussels sprouts, chorizo cream - pork chop and Brussels sprouts were fine, but nothing I couldn't make at home. The chorizo cream was interesting though. I could see trying to do something like this with my homemade chorizo for fun. Diver scallops with orange, fennel, and white balsamic vinaigrette - the scallops were perfectly cooked, yet only seared on one side?? Huh. Hm. Service was super friendly and accommodating, though it was a bit weird that we had servers switched halfway through our meal, and this was at the prime time of the evening. Prices are understandable for some things, high for others. Overall not bad. Grateful for the meal with no wait after trying a much much more overrun place in downtown Austin and not being able to get a table. Conventions are hard on nearby restuarants but despite the food sounding and looking good it was way over priced for the main lunch dishes. 4 shrimp on the fried avocado salad was sad and the overall flavor unmemorable. We were more than 6ft from the next table. Our server was extremely delightful, provided great service and wonderful recommendations. As stubborn as we are we ordered the american breakfast. The american breakfast has eggs, that come scrambled unless asked otherwise, a beautiful large hash brown stuffed with cheese, your choice of bacon or sausage and a small arugula salad with sundried tomatoes. Everything on that plate was great. I really loved those hash browns and the bacon was very crispy!! The sausage was juicy and went well with the eggs. We were coming here hoping to get chicken fried steak but was disappointed that they only serve that on the weekend brunch menu. The regular breakfast menu was very limited. we ended up getting the salmon and egg taco, an order of crispy hash brown and with a yelp check in, a free order of biscuits. Salmon and egg tacos: came in 2's and also a side of arugula salad. Kind of bland, the avocadoes in it was very fresh and pronounced, otherwise, nothing really special ($14). Crispy hashbrown: very small in size, not very crispy but a different texture. Not the usual hashbrown but still has good flavor. Still, very small in size ($5) Biscuits: Probably my favorite - decent size biscuits with buttery flavors and flaky texture. The whipped butter that comes along with it is very good as well.
