Disrespect staff. Me and my husband went to get a meal and shakes. We always get the same thing. So we know what to expect when we get our meals. Well this time our butterfinger shake barely had butterfinger. We thought that this would be no big deal and that they would replace the drink or add some butterfinger prices but instead they just told us they saw the guy put in a whole butterfinger... but somehow there was none. Okay.. so I asked if that's all they had to say and they just repeated themselves despite the evidence. Great service. Won't be going back to this location. We've had problems with their food before when we dined in and I'm over it. They need new management who cares about their food and their customers. In these times, it is few and far between when I get out to eat. I'm old, immunocompomised. I had to deposit a check.Left my house at 0530 this morning looking like an assassin. All in black, a hoodie jacket, sunglasses, black gloves and my trusty mask. Armed with plastic spray bottle of 70% alcohol and Clorox wipes I snuck through town to my Credit Union's night depository, the Mission Impossible theme accompanying in my mind. Dropped the check, pulled up my trusty Steak and Shake app, ordered and paid for a breakfast skillet. They threw the bag to me as I high-tailed through the drive thru. Home again, I Clorox my car before leaving it's sanctity. I scutter to my apartment door, spray it down with alcohol, opening the door with a Clorox wipes. Dowsing my keys and mask and hands with more alcohol before placing them at the ready near the door. .Then on to disinfect my breakfast. Strip gloves, wash hands, and eat. Settle in and find a double portion AND a complimentary fries! You made my day Steak n Shake! read more

This was probably the filthiest burger place--let alone Steak 'n Shake--I've ever been to. There was trash all over the floor, and every table I tried to move to was covered in food and drink residue. I would sit down at a table, find that it was dirty, and move to another one, only to find that the very next table was just as dirty. It was like I was performing in some absurd, slapstick comedy. Every. Single. Table. I'm mystified as to how the staff had time to gossip with each other (you could clearly hear them yapping), yet couldn't manage to spend a few seconds cleaning off the tables. All you need to do is go get a clean towel with your two precious hands, and wipe the damned tables down. Don't look at me with confusion as I'm moving from one table to the next, fully explaining to you with my words that your tables are dirty. Do something about it! Seriously! You have waitstaff at this place, whom we are expected to pay a tip, yet your tables and floors are filthy! RIDICULOUS. Furthermore, I'm not sure what the appeal is of having a loud, open kitchen that can be heard and viewed from the lobby. Customers are treated to the grating sounds of a cook who yells over the roar of fryers, and the loud buzzing of a shake machine. Neat! I know that Steak 'n Shake desperately wants people to envision an atmosphere that harkens back to the diners of old, but it ain't workin' here. This a fast food joint that's dirty, uncomfortable, and with seating in such disrepair that you will sink down through the cushions of the booths. Not to mention, every window shade on the south side of the building was drawn the morning of my last visit--inadequately blocking out the fierce morning sun. This could be due to poor planning, or maybe it's a practical joke--we came here to eat, but we're the ones getting cooked! I suppose the least of my problems with this place is that my order was incorrectly filled--not the dish, but the quantity. This was the kitchen's fault. But, as I can tell from a cursory scan of the reviews of this place, this seems to be a recurring problem. The food wasn't bad, just sloppy. Kind of thrown together. The kind of presentation that results from a worker who doesn't care. Regardless, despite the piss-poor presentation this food is a major step up from Burger King. This is an obsolete business model. You shouldn't be expected to tip a waitress at what amounts to nothing more than a fast food joint. Culver's offers the same type of burgers (with normal, full-size french fries), a cleaner, cozier, and more inviting restaurant--and they will bring your food to you without expecting a tip! (Hell, even Dairy Queen does this! Hell, Sonic has ALWAYS done this!) I guess the one unique, redeeming value this place has is their assortment of specialty shakes. I recommend going to another location if you want one. This is the worst Steak 'n Shake I've been to, and it's a shame. They should have limited their business to two locations in this to town, to avoid tarnishing their name. read more

Our waitress kept complaining about her coworkers to every table she had. We eat out a lot, so we understand the staffing issues. They appeared to be staffed, just bad service. Food was edible. How could a place with "shake" in the name make such a bad milkshake? I was on the road and felt like trying something new, so pulled into the drive through to survey the options. As one of the "premium" shakes at a restaurant known for this specific product, I thought I had this one in the bag. But no... Probably one of the worst milkshakes I've ever had. Before I even put my lips around the straw, I noticed the styrofoam cup (I didn't even know these were legal any more and yes, apparently this place is so cheap they won't even invest in biodegradable containers) was coated in grease from the employee's hand who made it. Nasty. The shake itself was terrible. The ice cream was completely freezer burned, and tasted completely awful. There was no creaminess whatsoever-- instead, it was grainy, hard and unappetizing. I've almost always hit this place up late at night with my friend. She and I will come here for a nice burger or a taco salad after a night of partying. It's a great spot for those late night cravings and for bar-hopping and cravings. The staff here have always been nice, and usually very personable. They also keep the place really clean. The crowd, on the other hand, can be a little mixed since you'll get people dropping in from I-44 highway while they're commuting, but it never really gets too crowded. If you're wanting a good steak burger and shake, then you should stop by here. Or, if you're looking for a semi-quiet late night dining experience, this is definitely the place to go. Compared: to the one on St. Louis, this one has fewer "freaks" as the Springfieldians would call them; on S. National, this one does not have "yuppies"; on S. Glenstone, this one is cleaner; on E. Dropped in just to order a shake. How hard is that? It's part of your name! 20 mins later still waiting for it. People that have come in afterwards and ordered have gotten their food and left. It's just a shake! When a couple, who'd come in quite a bit after I did got their shake and left I lost it. No responsibility at the counter. Take your order and money and leave you hanging. When I finally said "I want my money back I'm done." they brought up a shake made 10 minutes earlier. Whipped Cream sunk into the chocolate, cherry long sunk to the bottom. I read the name "Steak n' Shake" thinking they would have STEAKS but they don't. It's burgers, fries, soda, and shakes. I was thinking of writing a very precise analytical review as I usually do, but I'm just going to be as cheap & thoughtless (as much as I can) as Steak n' Shake's food is. So here we go: Burgers & fried = tasted slightly better than cheap fast food. Lack flavor, even when I poured salt and hot sauce on it. Shake = sucks! They serve you in a tall but skinny glass so that it appears that you are getting a lot because it's tall. Then half of the glass is filled with whipped cream NOT the actual shake! My husband and I usually stop here on our way to Oklahoma. We had a great experience 2 years ago. We went through the drive thru this time. The food was disgusting my husband took one bite and couldn't finish. I should have taken this as a indicator. But I really wanted it to taste good. This was my second trip to this Steak 'N Shake. My first time for breakfast. I ordered the California Skillet with sausage, my husband ordered the same but with chicken, and our daughter ordered the Country Skillet. My only complaint is the California skillet was a little dry. It needed salsa or taco sauce. It comes with pico de gallo, but it was not enough to make it moist. I would get it again but with the chicken instead of the sausage and with a side of salsa! The service was fantastic as always and the food came lightning fast! read more

I love eating at Steak and Shake but this time I was not as thrilled with the experience. The food was good and was what I ordered, so that was a good start. However, while I was waiting at the drive-thru window, I watched a cook pick up a fry carton without a glove on...her thumb was in the carton of fries and some spilled onto her hand as she put them in the bag...and then I watched her skim her hand across the table right after! There is a pandemic going on....and even if there weren't...gloves in a food establishment is a must! I also found no less than 3 hairs on the outsides of my shake cups. At least they were on the outside, but I really hope that there weren't any in the cup. Again, food was great but DEFINITE lacking in hygiene and cleanliness at this establishment. My food was pretty good, but I'm here to say that we entered the restaurant during a storm, and some people in our party were injured by a swinging door (no ones fault, just nature). Our server and the restaurant manager took very good care of us, bringing us bags of ice, multiple piles of napkins (someone was bleeding), and whatever the could pull out of their first aid kit. The menu is underwhelming for those trying to eat healthy. Service and cleanliness is fine. Bring back more salads including a chef salad and have at least one sandwich with whole wheat or rye option. The taco salad and grilled chicken salad had very little meat. Oh Steak N Shake you let me down. You let me down in a big way. When I moved here I heard how great the food was and how the staff was attentive. I must say after my first and only foray into this well known burger joint I will not be back. There is an old saying that states "We eat first with our eyes", now that being said I ordered a BBQ bacon cheese burger with fries and a shake. The shake was very tasty and reminded me of hot summer days chasing the Ice Cream man down the street for just one more creamsicle. When I got the burger and fries that is where the happiness ended. The burger looked like it had been thrown together by an over eager professional wrestler. It was smashed, with an over abundance of chopped onions coming out the sides. The BBQ sauce was a little dollop in the center of the bun and was so thick that is where it stayed. It didn't move once. The fries were shoestring thin which should have made for crisp tasty goodness, this however was not to be. Instead what I got was limp soggy noodles for fries. I went through the drive through and the service was average. I have eaten a few burgers in Springfield and were impressed by almost all of them. This was not one of them. We like this restaurant and eat here often. We finally went for our first Steak & Shake breakfast, and it was also our last. We sat down at a booth - there were 4 empty and they all hadn't been cleared (really?). They weren't even busy. Donna, the Service Manager finally came to clear our table. I greeted her with a warm "good morning!" And she just barely grunted at me, making no eye contact or acknowledging that we were even there. She left with the dishes then came back and said "Hi, I'm Donna, I'll be serving you today (like she'd never seen us before). I ordered the Homestyle Breakfast - eggs sunny side up, shredded hash browns, wheat toast and bacon. I asked her if the bacon is served crispy, she said "oh, yes". I said "good, cuz I like my bacon crispy". So our order comes out - my eggs were raw, literally slimy, the bacon was limp as over cooked pasta, and the hash browns were barely tan. They were more liked steamed potatoes. So I barely ate the hash browns, and the toast was just warm bread - not even toasted. Worst excuse for a breakfast anywhere. So if you're going to wear the title of Service Manager, provide some service and be friendly to your customers. Seriously, we probably won't be back. read more

We were seated promptly and our server, Jamie M., was very attentive and personable. The issue was the food quality. Three of the individuals at our table ordered chili and it tasted very "off". We've had enough Steak n Shake chili to tell. It was also warm and had a bizarre spice to it. My son had grilled cheese and fries. Ordered two burgers with fries, told them what we wanted on them (same for both), specifically said mustard and no ketchup. Got ketchup on one of them. The burgers and the paper wrap on them were literally dripping with grease and the meat along with lettuce and tomato were sliding all over the place (like swimming), they did not provide any napkins at all, the fries were cool and needed salt which also was not provided. steak and shake north glenstone...... so the guy who said he was not the "take out order guy" but was bored so he helped me, got me the utensils and "salt and pepper" well just "pepper" that i asked for . My steak burger came as order.. a little cold and my shooters the same. I order two shakes and an ice cream sandwich. the ice cream sandwich was perfect (of course made elsewhere) the shakes. one shake... the lid was NOT put on properly. when we pulled it from the cup holder of course it POPPED. went everywhere in my hotel room. yeah i should have been more carefule and anticipated that the lid would not be properly attached to the cup, but some times i hope that things will be perfect. But i digress..... no BBQ sauce with my chicken strips and no chesse with my CHEESE FRIES that i was upchardged $1.49 for .... makes me feel that it is NOT the place to order online..... if you do not understand let me clarify.....
