On Thursday, 21May, night around 8:30 PM when I stopped in with a friend. I had the double cheeseburger basket with a Coke. The burgers were good, although not quite as juicy as I remember, and I really liked the new beef tallow fries. The biggest issue was the cleanliness of the restaurant. The soda and condiment counter was sticky and dirty, the floors were greasy, and the whole restaurant had a rotten garbage/old food smell. We dined in, and honestly, between the filth and the odor, it made it difficult to enjoy the meal. I kept thinking, "I hope we don't get food poisoning." There appeared to be someone in the back dressed professionally who I assume was a manager, which made it even more confusing why nobody was cleaning or maintaining the dining area. It saddens me that a lot of Steak 'n Shakes have closed by me and it felt like a special treat when I visited Normal, Illinois to see that they were still open. Yes we all know they take forever to make your order. I feel this is standard across all Steak 'n Shakes, but our waiter was still kind and attentive. We dined in right around lunchtime, so they were PACKED. We ordered their awesome $5 dollar deal, where you get fries, a double cheeseburger and a chocolate, strawberry and vanilla shake. They brought out our shakes and they were even better than I remembered. These guys know how to make shakes!! The chocolate was awesome, so smooth, creamy and rich. The small was the perfect size to satisfy my sweet craving. As for the rest of the meal, I really enjoyed it as well. The fries were crispy, seasoned well and shoe-string thin. What can't you love about these fries? The burger was super smashed, with melted cheese and a toasted bun. I love smash burgers and these guys know how to create a good one. I definitely enjoyed every bit of this meal and would stop in again anytime! Make sure to stop by and enjoy a delicious meal for $5. So we were driving from Chicago to Central Illinois and we stopped here for lunch. I ordered a double cheeseburger and a nutella shake, I received one meat burguer only, they forgot the 2nd that I did paid for! All the food had a weird after taste! Like disgusting I couldn't eat the rest of the burguer or shake. Hubby had a Frisco melt, that also was a little more greasy than expected. He also asked for a Dr Pepper but he got a coke instead... Lol! Just messed up all the order. Fries are very thin which is nice but again a horrible after taste. They don't accept customers in to use the bathroom, is only drive thru. Wow! This place has really gone downhill! I realized it was closed for Covid and that had to have beenDifficult. They switch to ordering from the counter And no waitresses. OK, I get that. It surprises me how fast food can give you burgers that taste so good for what you pay! I went through Drive-Thru the Royale Burger and I was impressed. The burger has bacon, egg, and all the other normal good stuff. It was fulfilling with its size and flavors. It reminded me of a very good burger that I had in Chicago. Stopped in here on a recent road trip to Saint Louis. I ordered the Gaucamole Burger with Fries and a Mocha / Chocolate Side by Side Shake! This Place puts all other fast food chains to shame. Best burger I've ever had. The Fries were crispy and golden on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. My Shake came straight out of my dreams! Cold, rich, creamy, chocolatey, mocha-ie (not a word...i know). Just wonderful!!!! They are wheelchair accessible. The staff was extremely friendly and the Mensroom was Spotless. read more

We went in to this location around 6:30pm Tuesday evening on November 26. We were seated within a few minutes- and no one after that looked at us let alone asked to take our order. We waited 10 minutes while watching two other sets of customers come in and get seated. After another long period- someone asked another table (seated 10 minutes after us) if they had been helped. After being there for 20 minutes- we stood up and I walked over to the server and said we're leaving - and briefly said why. She acted surprised- and maybe remorseful. This Steak and Shake is frequently crowded and you can run into 30 minute waits or so to be seated. We hit it around 5:30 pm and dodged the crowd. The server was very friendly and willing to offer suggestions or opinions on what to order. I went with the Jalapeno Burger (our server's favorite) and a Smores shake. The burger was the typical tasty Steak and Shake burger and the peppers added a nice pop, but I was a bit disappointed that the Pepper Jack cheese was sparse and barely noticeable flavor-wise. The Smores shake was... umm.. interesting. Pretty good, but still not sure how I feel about drinking graham crackers in my shake. Also the chocolate syrup was fairly thick and pooled at the bottom, and even with several stirring attempts, I had a hard time avoiding it plugging up the straw fairly often. The worst possible service you could ever be offered. We stood there for 10 min after every single employee included the manager made eye contact with us before we were seated. There wasn't a single even remotely good server working. You could over hear them just complaining about their job and how they wanted to be off. One server kept walking around just flipping her little card for the computer and hit me with it because she wasn't paying attention. If there wasn't people sitting at the tables they were dirty. The floors were filthy. The food wasn't even that good. The look on every customers face was the same as mine. Just totally unsatisfied and irritated. If it was up to me I would fire EVERY single employee working in that establishment including the big shot managers and start over. No one could even smile. No one was friendly. One of the absolute worst experiences. I was a fairly regular at this place. Tonight we walked in and though seated quickly we did not have a server come to our table for quite some time. The place was fairly busy and well staffed. Others seated after us received drinks and food and still no server. Well I pulled a first. I called SnS at our location from my phone. A manager type answered and I could see him on the phone from behind the cashier area and I waved at him. He came to the table apologizing and took our order. Left. Brought drinks. And we didn't see him for quite some time. Longer then we ever have waited. Finally food. He said he'd check on us soon. He didn't. I took my glass up to the server station and asked for more tea. Why didn't management assign us a server? Needless to say I cashed out up front and left no tip. Don't. Don't even criticize me for no tip. I know the routine and have read all the reasons why you leave a tip regardless of the service. Problem. We had no server. I got my own tea. I am not from Illinois. Where I am from, there are none of these. I drove by this a few times on the way to my conference and was intrigued. I stopped in for lunch, and the place was packed. It was a diner feel, however you are waited on. I was not ready for that. The waitress was patient, and when I explained that I had never been there, she went over in detail what she believed to be the best options and item menus per my taste. I had the Cajun burger with fries and a banana shake. All of it was great. Much higher quality fast food then what I deal with in CA typically. Steak n Shake is one if those few burger joints that still offers value for your money. Unlike mcdonalds and burger king they still serve food that looks and tastes like food. The burgers are fresh made. The prices are competitive. For less than a Big mac meal you can have a double steak burger meal and as an added bonus this burger won't send you on a porcelain truck ride. A 10 to 15 minute wait at the drive thru seems a small price to pay for. It. Servants are very polite, burgers are great. I usually go for the double steak burger with everything on it except mustard. I had the garlic steak burger this time and i was not disapointed. Why this place is not number 1 in the area i just dont know. They are in the same league as culvers and 5 guys but way more affortable. Avoid peak hours if youre very hungry. Im not sure if you can get a full size triple burger and fries anywhere else for $4. Parking here is usually fine, and food gets to your table quickly. If only bacon cheese fries were part of the $4 deal. They are kind of needed though as the regular fries can get cold quickly due to there small size. The cheese adds a sort of a blanket layer of insulation, and the bacon adds extra deliciousness. Pretty much always satisfied with my trips to this Steak n Shake. read more

I've eaten at this Steak 'n Shake several dozen times in the last 15 years. Just down the road to the west is Darnall's GunWorks & Shooting Range, and I've attended a half dozen classes there over the years. I also go down this way on vacation to South Carolina in August, and I ALWAYS stop here on the way down and on the way back. I most often get the 5 way chili. I think I might like the Steak 'n' Shake version better than the traditional Skyline Chili version. The seasoned fries are good too. On my last visit I had a garlic double steakburger and the Cajun spiced fries. They have a lot of varieties of spiced fries that seem interesting that I will have to test fire on future trips. (Too bad they don't sell beer to go with the seasoned fries . . . ) And Steak 'n Shake is a place that understands a good glass of milk. Large size glass and it's always cold. I most often buy official Steak 'n Shake seasoned salt to take home. It tastes similar to Lawry's Salt, but my niece and nephew think that it's the neatest stuff in the world. I'm not sure why, except that they have also often eaten at this particular Steak 'n Shake so getting seasoned salt here is a big deal. read more

Stopped twice this weekend. Food was great and the service was equally as good. It was very busy even at 3 PM and that's because of the $3.99 menu.
