The Pepe Plato, Grilled Chicken rice and the unbelievable cheese sauce
    Nate L.

I wish this place was a little closer than the two and a half hour drive from Chicago, but I've been here a half dozen times and it is wotrh the effort. A friend of ours who went to college here told us to try the place and in peticular, to sample the white queso sauce. Her and her friends called the queso "liquid gold" and they were right. The majority of the menu is grilled, so it's a bit healthier. They also use the queso on a number of their dishes, one of my favorites, the Pepe Plato, Grilled Chicken rice and the unbelievable cheese sauce. They also have a Michalotta that is delicious, with the rim lined with shrimp. We recommend that you give this place a try. The staff is sometimes a little grumpy, but the food makes up for it.

Everything was delicious! Had to take some of it home because the portions were big but yay for leftovers! Service was excellent. Very attentive! Will be back

    Fajitas Poblanos with Premium Margarita
    Matthew D.

Exceptional food and good drinks. I'll admit, I'm always skeptical of a Mexican restaurant without a bar, especially skeptical of the margaritas. However this place exceeded my expectations. I ordered the premium margarita and it showed up in less than 1 minute (not a good sign as Margaritas made correctly aren't that fast and usually use a cheap sour mix) but the margarita was actually quite good. I ordered the Fajitas Poblanos and I was blown away by how good the steak was, tender and seasoned perfectly. These are not your typical run-of-the-mill fajitas that you find at most small town Mexican joints, these are Fajitas to remember. Stop in here and make some Fajita memories.

    Quesabirria con consomé

Very delicious food, as a Mexican & new to the area I was looking for a more authentic comfort Mexican food that wasn't all "queso" and "Americanized" I must say this is my favorite Mexican restaurant. My go to order is the birria tacos, which is authentically made with goat meat not beef. You can also order them with cheese making it a quesabirria.. the consomé (broth) that comes on the side to dip the tacos is delicious! Margaritas are good as well. Jose S. Was our waiter and he's awesome! Thank you for Jose for making me feel at home.

I have to address one thing before anything else - this is NOT authentic Mexican food. I saw a lot of reviews saying that it was and i went in with high expectations. As a girl who grew up with authentic Mexican food literally at every street corner food cart in LA (and having enjoyed my fair share of home cooking in Mexican households), I like to think I know what I'm talking about. You will never find ground meats, a salad (lettuce/tomato etc) on top of your burrito/food, or having the dish drowning in any kind of sauce. That being said, the food is more tex/mex and is good. Service was good over all and very fast -although the person who was at the hostess stand when we walked in was on her phone so it took her a minute to realize we were there. Food came out quickly and portion sizes are HUGE. We each had enough food leftover for lunch the next day. The give you chips and salsa once you are seated (salsa could use some spice). The menu is great and has options for everyone/everything from tacos, burritos, salads etc. They do have a white cheese sauce that goes on a lot of their dishes which is gooey and yummy. Definitely a place I look forward to trying again.

Great menu, friendly staff. The ambiance is nice though the Tv's aren't necessary. Better be hungry when you go!

Look, I've been patronizing Mexican joints in Bloomington-Normal since antes de que fuera cool, and…read moreI need to talk about what's happening at Herradura. THE GOOD: The service here operates at quantum speeds. I'm talking food-to-table in approximately 5 minutes. Did they have a DeLorean in the kitchen? Did they start cooking when I pulled into the parking lot? I don't know, but physics was definitely involved. The presentation looked solid--everything arrived hot and reasonably photogenic. THE "WAIT, WHAT?": Friends, we need to discuss the Great Portion Shrinkage of 2026. Herradura has apparently discovered the restaurant industry's worst-kept secret: instead of raising prices a reasonable amount, just slash 10% off the menu and reduce portions by 35%. It's like getting a "discount" on a car, but they removed the back seats and the radio. The chimichangas arrived looking like they'd been on a strict juice cleanse--smaller than expected and committing the cardinal sin of sogginess. These weren't the crispy flavor bombs I remember. They were more like... flavor water balloons? Still edible, but not exactly chimichanga hall-of-fame material. THE CHEESE TAX: Here's where things got personal. I've been a loyal "little extra cheese on the rice" guy for years. Today? Nearly FIVE DOLLARS for what amounts to 4 tablespoons of queso. That's approximately $127 per pound if my mental math is correct (it's not, but you get the point). I've seen cheaper cheese at artisanal farmer's markets run by bearded hipsters in suspenders. The beef tacos were... fine. That's the review. Fine. They existed. They were tacos. Moving on. THE VERDICT: On the Bloomington-Normal Nickel-and-Dime Scale™, Herradura ranks on the lower end, which is actually saying something in this town where inflation is hitting Mexican restaurants like they personally offended the economy. Will I be back? Yes. Will it be soon? No. Next time I'm trying the cheesesteak because apparently I'm a glutton for punishment and also curious if it comes in "fun size" now too. Pro tip: Bring your own cheese. Save $5. Live your best life. Also i turned macro mode on for my camera. Objects look bigger than they appear in person. Atmosphere: 4/5 | Service: 5/5 | Food Quality: 3/5 | Value: 2/5 | Portion Size: 1.5/5

We like this place just as much as the more upscale East side joints...and ya know what...it's a bit cheaper and seems to stay pretty busy despite its 'back of the strip mall/behind a tire shop' location. Pretty fast efficient service too all things considered.
