I wish this place was a little closer than the two and a half hour drive from Chicago, but I've been here a half dozen times and it is wotrh the effort. A friend of ours who went to college here told us to try the place and in peticular, to sample the white queso sauce. Her and her friends called the queso "liquid gold" and they were right. The majority of the menu is grilled, so it's a bit healthier. They also use the queso on a number of their dishes, one of my favorites, the Pepe Plato, Grilled Chicken rice and the unbelievable cheese sauce. They also have a Michalotta that is delicious, with the rim lined with shrimp. We recommend that you give this place a try. The staff is sometimes a little grumpy, but the food makes up for it. read more

Exceptional food and good drinks. I'll admit, I'm always skeptical of a Mexican restaurant without a bar, especially skeptical of the margaritas. However this place exceeded my expectations. I ordered the premium margarita and it showed up in less than 1 minute (not a good sign as Margaritas made correctly aren't that fast and usually use a cheap sour mix) but the margarita was actually quite good. I ordered the Fajitas Poblanos and I was blown away by how good the steak was, tender and seasoned perfectly. I have had the pollo con creama twice now. The picture is not representative and there is no description in the menu. The picture shows a glorious pile of grilled chicken, while the meal delivered is good it is vastly different. It is mushrooms, onions and jalapeños stir fried with grill chicken in a brown creamy sauce likely sour cream based. The margarita is still good and a small is only two dollars. read more

I have to address one thing before anything else - this is NOT authentic Mexican food. I saw a lot of reviews saying that it was and i went in with high expectations. As a girl who grew up with authentic Mexican food literally at every street corner food cart in LA (and having enjoyed my fair share of home cooking in Mexican households), I like to think I know what I'm talking about. You will never find ground meats, a salad (lettuce/tomato etc) on top of your burrito/food, or having the dish drowning in any kind of sauce. That being said, the food is more tex/mex and is good. Service was good over all and very fast -although the person who was at the hostess stand when we walked in was on her phone so it took her a minute to realize we were there. Food came out quickly and portion sizes are HUGE. We each had enough food leftover for lunch the next day. The give you chips and salsa once you are seated (salsa could use some spice). The menu is great and has options for everyone/everything from tacos, burritos, salads etc. They do have a white cheese sauce that goes on a lot of their dishes which is gooey and yummy. My go to order is the birria tacos, which is authentically made with goat meat not beef. It is a decent Mexican restaurant, as one of the so many ones in town. I think the decoration and other small things are definitely standing out more than the food itself. The restaurant is bright-colored and well-decorated. The booth seats are okay, not the most comfortable. The menu has quite a few items that look delicious. We went here upon multiple recommendations from friends. It was a major disappointment. Both of us got steak burritos. The quality of the steak was terrible. It was mealy and overcooked. I had a combo plate consisting of a Smothered Chicken Chimichanga & a Steak Burrito, complete with rice and beans and a small salad. It was a tasty a savory meal for under $10! I am truly befuddled by the positive reviews for this place. The interior was dingy, worn out, and dirty in some spots. The food had little flavor and lacked freshness. The salsas were bland and tasted as if made with canned tomatoes. It was as if you were tasting a bowl of diced, canned tomatoes which had onion and cilantro added to them. Teresa's shrimp dish lacked flavor and the frozen texture/flavor of the shrimp really detracted from the dish. The tomatillo salsa was non-existent on my enchiladas and what little it had, again lacked any punch of flavor. read more

I can here based on the reviews, "Best Mexican restaurant in town". We get there on Friday night and it's packed, so I'm thinking this is a good sign. Wrong.my food was so gross, I ordered the combo plate with 2 tacos, there's no option or soft or hard. It's just a soggy hardshell that you will get. It's filled with 70% meat and 29.5% cheese and 0.5% lettuce. The chicken enchilada was indescribable disgusting. Taco Bell has more flavor and Taco Bell actually taste fresher. This place uses very little fresh ingredients, so if you want pico, tomatoes, cilantro or anything fresh you'd expect to find at a Mexican restaurant, you will not find those here. This is my favorite place in Bloomington/Normal to eat Mexican food. I was hooked when I had their tamales tipicos. Most places have thin tamales that are very dry. You get three fairly large tamales covered in cheese with rice and beans. There is lots to choose from on the menu. I like that they have a quite a few dishes made with chorizo (Mexican sausage). The service is always good. There is one waiter that is really comical. For example, I ordered an ice tea. He replied, "Diet Coke." I said, "No, ice tea." He replied again, "Diet Coke" then walked away. It was an ice tea. It took a minute to learn that he was kidding around. It always provides a good laugh. read more

When he gave it back to me he kept moving it away so I couldn't grab it. It was confusing the first time, funny the second, and annoying after the third time. Our food order was taken after drinks were served and was delivered to the table quickly. I had the fajitas bravos and my companion quesadillas. For my part, I wish there was more shrimp in my entree. The chicken and beef portions of the dish were also a little dry for my taste. I thought the salsa was bland and needed a little more cilantro and maybe jalapenos. Still, it wasn't so bad that I complained and would give the place another try. YUM. First, got the chicken tacos with SOFT Shells this time. Exactly what I was looking for the first time. Second, tried the small strawberry margarita and it definitely completed my Mexican dinner. Also tried the 'Margarota', a margarita in a bird bath size glass with a Coronita (sound familiar?) tipped into it. Delicious. Los Potrillos is a very warm and welcoming establishment. Nice and comfortable definitely come to mind. It has a Hometown feeling, I almost wish I were in slippers. All the waitstaff are really nice and the food is hot and flavorful. Most of us ordered fajitas. The portions are large so don't eat or even snack before coming unless you just want left overs. The margaritas kept my sons from speaking. I think one of them choked on a straw he pulled from it so long. I can only imagine the brain freeze. The coronas come with lime and a chilled mug.
