4 of the $1.50 mini steak tacos
    Pete R.

Been a while since my last visit and the prospects of $1.50 steak tacos for National Taco Day was the bait I needed. Late in the lunch hour the place was pretty crowded (predictably including several hungry college guys) but I noticed pretty quick the change to the place from a traditional table service model to counter service. It was spacious enough with 12+ mixed sized tables where diners can park for the two big screens of pretty authentic Mexican fare. This was not a day to branch out with one of my old fave hurraches, this day was all about the asada! As pictured although smaller than usual, these 3-4 bite beauties were crisped and flavorful with not too much onion and cilantro. This becomes more important here now that a salsa/toppings 'buffet' has been set up along the back wall. Three or 4 salsas, pico, pickled/no -pickled veggies like cactus radish and jalapeños. Given the size of the tacos I must admit to loading up a bit and really enjoyed the mix of textures and spicy flavors. I was also happy to find a selection of (mostly) Mexican beers (or glass bottle Coke) behind that counter, available to wash it all down. So while it seems like we already make or eat tacos twice a week, we need to make sure to squeeze this place back into the rotation! 4.2-stars

    Birria tacos, enchiladas, and tamales!

Wow! If you've not been to Tony's Tacos, you're missing out! It's the perfect place for authentic Mexican food prepared with care! Not pretentious, but a great place to gather for a fun time and awesome food. You have to try the Birria tacos if you've never had them. The tamales and enchiladas are outstanding. Have the chips and salsa with some guacamole and added sauce options from the sauce bar. Oh, and I have to recommend the margaritas! Top notch! Top it off with a piece of Norma's Tres Leches cake, and your mouth will be in heaven! Thank you to the staff for the excellent service, as well. Can't wait to go back!

    Awesome tacos!

As a celiac, my options were limited to the Grilled Chicken Salad and the Chicken Wings. I went with the healthier option and enjoyed my salad! Service was friendly and informative and everything you expect from small-ish town in the Midwest! I also am not able to enjoy beer any longer, so I was grateful that they offered some cider options. Delish! Would I go back? This place would be a dream if I did not have a restricted diet. So yes, if this is where my group wanted to go, I would... and I would try the wings and get another salad. A beautiful wood bar greets you when you walk in, with some booth seating off to the side. We sat outside for dinner and enjoyed the space. Waitress was attentive with our beers and our dinners were great. We had to order the pork tenderloin, which was incredible. Moist pork within a beautiful fried coating. This kitchen knows how to fry their food. My chicken was a deep golden brown with a moist chicken breast within. YUM! I will definitely stop back in when in Bloomington. Thanks Schooners!

The potatoes were also pretty solid. The flavored tea was nice, it just needed a bit of sugar. Our waitress was super friendly and made the experience even better. She was enthusiastic and enjoyed sharing her favorite menu items, which I appreciated. The ambiance was very welcoming, and I liked how open the space felt. The only downside was that the host who seated us seemed a little short when asking if we had reservations, especially when I asked if they were required.

Got a flight- moon jumper (smoky), black angel (a little on the burnt side), blackberry gose, pumpkin porter (spicy but not fake pumpkin flavor spicy). Beer battered asparagus for the appetizer- delicious! Crunchy which was great! Husband and I split a bacon pickle pizza (omg!!) and spicy chicken sandwich with wedges (huge, thick potato slices). Definitely recommend the pizza, so flavorful! Spicy chicken was both hot and spicy from the jalapeños and sweet from the sauce. Madysen was our server and was amazing and attentive! If it wasn't 2.5 hours away we'd be regulars! Lots of parking available.

Review Visit: June 11th, 2018…read more That Burger Joint is... disjointed? Recently, Oberweis Dairy (an ice cream store, a la Cold Stone Creamery) has expanded to offer a restaurant attached to their store. While driving through Bloomington, the gimmicky name instantly caught my eye. You would think if you visit a restaurant with burger in it's name, you would order a burger. But I didn't. I ordered 'That Spicy Chicken'. My friend ordered 'That Burger'. We sat down and were anxious to dig in to the food. The sandwiches were massive and heavy. Almost too big to eat. But where it was big in size, it lacked in flavor. I got jalapenos on my chicken and it definitely added a kick, but the chicken itself tasted... off. It wasn't bad, but it didn't give me anything to write home about. Just this blog post. I tried my friend's burger and she tried my sandwich. Her burger was full of flavor due to the toppings and grease, but the actual meat had no more flavor than a $4 pound of unseasoned beef that you'd get at the local grocer. She agreed that the food was mediocre overall. The lay out of the inside reminds me of a hybrid between Steak N Shake and Five Guys Burger & Fries. You walk up to the counter, place your order and you either take it to go or they can bring it out to your table. It's that cross between fast food and restaurant. The decor was sparse and lacking. There is an attempt to give it a rustic look, but the large swathes of black leave much to be desired. The customer service was good while ordering, but once we were sitting down, the staff was complaining among themselves about how short staffed they were. I hate to score That Burger Joint so low, but I can't in good conscious give it a glowing review. It's best to avoid it, even if you are there getting ice cream. There are way better places in Bloomington/Normal to get food.
