I had a fantastic night at Steak 38! First off, don't judge a book by its cover--the outside sits right next to a motel, which isn't exactly glamorous, but once you step inside, it's a whole different story. The interior has this old-school Rat Pack vibe that makes you feel like you should be sipping martinis in a tux. I started with the fried zucchini and marinara sauce--crispy, flavorful, and basically begging to be eaten by the dozen. The house bread with seasoned butter? Dangerous. I could have made a meal out of that alone. For my entrée, I had the ribeye steak, medium rare, cooked perfectly, with mashed potatoes and green beans that were classic and comforting. The flavors were solid, the portions generous, and every bite hit that sweet spot of "just got paid its Friday night." And then there was the Aviation cocktail--phenomenal. Balanced, smooth, and dangerously easy to drink. Service was friendly and attentive, without hovering like a bad date. Overall, Steak 38 is a little hidden gem: ignore the motel, follow the bread crumbs inside, and you'll find yourself having a meal that's old-school classy, delicious, and just the right amount of fun. read more

Finally got to try Steak 38. The entire experience, food, service and ambience lived up to the hype. Bread and garlic butter plus roasted peppers were great. We had an amazing time! Like everyone else says, the exterior betrays this place. The interior is old school steakhouse, with a valet outside. We were celebrating our anniversary and had the Steak 38 special. The amount of table side service was easily some of the best I have had in Jersey (still a little behind Toronto, but different). The steak was honestly perfectly seasoned, I don't think you would need the 'extras' advertised. We had the garlic chips and they were good, but probably not worth it. The creamed spinach though?? Had been given a gift certificate for a celebration so I was looking forward to the evening. My dining partner and I shared a few dishes. Enjoyed the table side bread and roasted green peppers. Lobster bisque was tasty although very thin. Not what I expected. Calamari was good although a bit overdone. I had prime rib, ordered medium. It came out a bit more done than what I expected although to be honest, the restaurant was is very dimly lit. Green beans were delicious, mashed potatoes were ok. We shared NY cheese cake which was fine. Please be aware that the actual price is higher than the online menu. The online menu lists the prime rib as $39 but currently is $49. Parking is sketchy. There is a parking valet available. He waved me through and told me to find parking at the motel. The Tesla behind me got the preferential treatment. read more

I've been driving past this place for years, and last night the plan was to go to Fleming's for Tomahawk Tuesday for a date night. But a last minute change landed us here, and will probably become a regular thing. The complimentary valet was definitely a plus in this cold weather, although I wanted him to come inside. The weather was biting. Upon walking in, we were greeted and sat immediately. It's a dimly lit, intimate space and appeared to be great for family outings or a simple date night. The wine and bourbon selection reeled me in, but the prime rib made me a fan! It was soooo tender and delicious. The table side Caesar salad was definitely an experience. I can't say that I've been somewhere and watched them make authentic Caesar dressing in front of me. That butter cake was the perfect end to a great meal and I can't even remember the last time I actually finished or even ordered a dessert. This was absolutely worth it. If you're looking for quality steak, nice ambiance, and intimate atmosphere for your next night out, I recommend stopping in. Traditional steak place for the fancy date night Came here as a date night option with the girlfriend. She really enjoyed the table side service and everything but the steaks and wanted to share that with me. Parking was...not the greatest. It's a small place that shares its parking with a little motel. If there's no valet, parking is "at your own risk". The service was a little lackluster from our server. She had a lot of backup from the rest of the staff though, who would fix the mistakes right after she would make them. We got the table side Caesar salad, which they make in front of you. A good Caesar dressing made fresh is a rarity now-a-days, and was a treat. We got her favorite dish, the mussels italiano. Lots of meaty mussels in a very rich but not too oily sauce. The only detractor was the table bread was overly dense and not a good broth vessel. We skipped the entree and went for the other table service they offer - bananas foster. They came over with a cart, got the butter nice and bubbly, added brown sugar, then some rum on a nice flambé. It's fun to watch, and who doesn't like burned dark rum bananas with butter over ice cream?! The ice cream was a little icy with little vanilla flavor, but it's all about the topping on that one (the boozy butter bananas). Put that on top of some French toast with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you got a good brunch item. I give it a 4 because although this is a great place for a date night, the price is appropriate for a steak place. It's not cheap, and it's good to try once but there's little to keep one coming back. Once you get the shows, there's very little variance to the menu and not much else to look forward to. That topped with the hiccups in our experience that night a less than 5 star affair. But it's still good, and a nice spot to celebrate with others. I went for the happy hour food and would go back. The goat cheese crostini was my favorite it is almost like a sweet bruschetta with nuts on top. The prime rib egg rolls were juicy and had the best sauce ever. I am a big calamari girl and the calamari was great but just so you can recognize how good the other two foods were, it was not as big as a highlight compared to teh crostini and prime rib egg rolls. On a recommendation of a friend and after reading the reviews, I was really excited to go here. We had driven past here literally 100s of times on our way to and from our kids practice and had overlooked the restaurant on a very busy intersection with no windows attached (sort of) to a motel. Wonderful dining experience from beginning to end. Starting with complimentary valet - that was friendly, professional, and attentive. Upon entry i was greeted right at the door, it was much darker inside then I would have expected, that might be difficult for some to read the menu. But very intimate dining in smaller rooms so you never feel overwhelmed. I had the mussels and a filet. Both beautifully executed both in skill and flavor. Will definitely be back. Not sure what happened here. The experience at this place was a NIGHTMARE! We arrived for our 7pm reservation right on time, however, we were told our table was not ready and were asked to wait at the bar. After 12 minutes of sitting at the bar we were finally served water. Unfortunately, there was food floating in the water. After about 20 minutes at the bar we were finally served, and about 5 minutes later we were seated at our table. We were able to order drinks immediately with our server. Great! Unfortunately this did not mean we would get our drinks in a timely fashion. We ordered one glass of wine and one smoked old fashioned. Since the old fashioned was served table side, the server brought over the cart to make the drink, but did not return for 10 minutes. During this time, the cart was borrowed to serve another drink, which seemed very unprofessional. Our server finally returned and served our drinks which were good. After 50 minutes of arriving, we were finally able to order. Next, we had the soup course. Might have been a communication issue here, but we ordered two soups and were served one. This was quickly corrected. Around 820pm, an hour and 20 minutes after we arrived, we were told our entrees would be served, skipping over the salad course. Turns out they forgot about the salads, even though they offered them complimentary for our initial wait. During the salad course, we were served our side for dinner but not our main entrees. They quickly replaced the side since our salad was so late and entrees were not served, and at this time were offered a free dessert. Okay, appreciated. Once the entrees arrived and we were starving, we bit in to find a burnt crab cake and tasteless steak. Soup was excellent, salad and entrees were subpar. Come to find the bill and it was an extra $30 for the brunt crab cake. The employees were very nice, and did try to make up for it, but unfortunately the experience was just terrible overall. Still the same reaction from my original post... Wow. We came for happy hour and sat at the bar. Dawn and Robbie were amazing bartenders. Happy hour had great drink prices and great apps that you can need at the bar. And the drinks are drinks, not watered down one bit! We then had dinner at the bar as well. And the steaks are still top notch. I had a ribeye marinated and soy with a pineapple salsa on top, basically it was a teriyaki steak. But on another level it was so tender and so good! The crab cakes as always are huge and delicious with barely any filler just all crab. The calamari with hot peppers next level... Make sure you save room for dessert because the butter cake with the salted caramel sauce is unreal. And there's not enough words to describe the interior. Don't be fooled by the exterior and motel attached. Complimentary valet, Excellent food, friendly service, and beautifully decorated for Christmas. My only slight annoyance was having a reservation, showing up 15 minutes early for it and then waiting a half hour after the reservation to get seated. But once we did, everything was great. Drinks were very good and came out quickly. Would recommend the bruschetta, table-side caesar, Chilean sea bass special, mushrooms, and creamed spinach. My friend & I traveled from Maryland to visit Steak 38 for her birthday. I ordered the ribeye 16 oz with a side piece (similar to a side car but strawberry is used in place of orange). My friend ordered the surf & turf with the Lady Elena as her drink. We also got an extra side of creamed spinach. For dessert, we chose the vanilla buttercake a la mode. Came here with a friend for a belated birthday early dinner. I was kind of surprised by the fact that it was attached to a motel. From the outside it looks a little weird. Also, the website had a dress code but when we arrived everyone was dressed super casually. When you enter inside, it has a nice intimate and quaint vibe. The hostess was warm and friendly. When we sat down we were given bread, garlic butter and green peppers. Our servers Pete and Joe were really nice and professional. For my entree, I had 16 oz Ribeye. It was seasoned really well cooked perfectly. The mash potatoes and string beans were great sides. The roasted duck was tender and flavorful. When I booked the reservation, I put the occasion as birthday. I didn't even have to tell Pete about bringing a dessert. He already brought one out with a candle after Joe took our plates. We are new to the Philly/Cherry Hill area, so we asked around for anniversary dinner recommendations...Steak 38 did not disappoint! From the moment we sat down with Dawn at the bar, we realized what a special place, Steak 38 is. It would remind you of a throwback, speakeasy type of spot, as it's dark and lively inside. Dawn was so pleasant and welcoming and had great cocktail and wine suggestions. Of course, we had to have our obligatory pre-dinner martinis, which were large and made perfectly. We looked over the wine menu while sitting at the bar. It's not a large list, as you'd expect with a steakhouse, however, it has every varietal you could want, including some big California names. The prices are VERY reasonable, and if you have a question, Dawn can assist. The bottle we picked was excellent, and when we asked to have it decanted, they were happy to do it. Speaking of our table, we we sat in the Sinatra room, which cracked us up, as it's so Jersey, which we LOVED. Pictures of Frank and the gang on all the TVs, with dark curtains and lights hanging all around. It was romantic, as the tables are not on top of one another, so you feel relaxed. Samantha was our server, and she was fantastic! She was very efficient, yet not pushy and well-versed on the menu and dishes, making suggestions, which we appreciated as this was our first time here. We started with the table side Cesar salad, where you have a say in what goes into the salad, (for us it's yes to anchovies, and not too much parmesan). Miguel was quite the 'mixologist' and prepared it beautifully! It's massive though, so keep that in mind when ordering, as you must order it for two. The lettuce was pre-cut and extremely fresh, and the salad made with the best ingredients. This was well worth the price, trust me, and it is necessary if you're a Cesar salad fan! We then ordered the dry-aged ribeye, bone-in, which we shared as well as creamed spinach. The meal came with mashed potatoes and haricot verts (green beans for those not familiar with the name), which we didn't even realize we were getting. Not a huge fan of the creamed spinach as it had too much parmesan cheese for our liking. The food quality and presentation are exceptional and very well-priced for the level of service. Everything was honestly so well-prepared, and the service staff is on top of every course! They work like a well-oiled machine, coming and going yet not overwhelming you. Samantha brought us a small bottle of champagne, which was on the house, for our anniversary. Such a nice gesture, and we enjoyed it immensely! My husband insisted on the carrot cake for dessert, which we had no room for, but still managed to eat almost half of, lol. It was moist and the cream cheese frosting was not too sweet. My wife and I visited Steak 38 for the first time this year (June) for our anniversary. The food we had was excellent and we were both very satisfied. My wife waited for a very long time for her drink but other than that the service was wonderful. Our waiter was very entertaining, a very likable guy who sang a song for one of the tables. Now here we go , we were seated next to a table of about 16 people who were there because someone was retiring, it was extremely loud and very busy. I'm a person that has attended a group just like it and they get a little rowdy. Not really a group I wanted to sit near for an intimate anniversary dinner and the restaurant was told why we were there. We probably won't be back. read more

I learned about Steak 38 a while back but every time I drove by it just didn't look like my style. However, I saw great reviews recently and decided it might be a good spot to go with family. We finally tried it on a Saturday evening. Valet parking is free ( don't forget to tip) and super convenient. Upon entering the restaurant you can tell it's been around for a while. My mom, who is in her late 60s, kept remarking about how she was transported back to the 70s. We were seated in a room covered in white Christmas lights with oldies music pouring from speakers. Warm bread and herb butter was waiting for us on the table. We opted to order specialty cocktails and start with fried zucchini. The fried zucchini was perfectly crispy and well seasoned, served with a sweet marinara dipping sauce. Next up, we did the table-side caesar salad. A server prepares the salad, explaining the ingredients being added as she expertly makes everything before your eyes. I have had a few tableside Caesar salads in my life, and this one can best be described as authentic. Everyone loved it. For entrees, we all opted for steak, although the menu has a ton of options such as chicken dishes, seafood, and pasta. I did the steak Diane and everyone else ordered various versions of Ribeye. All entrees came with mashed red skin potatoes and perfectly cooked green beans. Now, my husband and I dine out at fine dining establishments all the time. We particularly like to frequently upscale steak restaurants. While I wouldn't describe Steak 38 as upscale, it was the first time I ate every single bite of my steak. Cooked perfectly medium, the steak was tender and the Diane sauce was full of flavor. While the bananas foster is prepared table-side and looks great, my family isn't as into banana desserts as I am, so we shared the butter cake, and my husband did the carrot cake. The carrot cake was bigger than my husband's head ( which is saying something). While his was very impressive, the butter cake was incredible. Warm and gooey, served with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. It was the perfect ending to a delicious dinner. Everyone loved their dinner and one of our family members is VERY hard to please. I read somewhere the dress code was "dressy" but I can assure you that was not the case. The vibe was much more laid back than expected. We really, really enjoyed our dinner here. The peach margarita cocktail was super delicious, as was the table side-made Caesar salad. The steak (we shared a ribeye) was also delicious, as were the accompanying mashed potato and green beans. We also got the au poivre sauce on the side, and it was amazing. The restaurant itself is located somewhat oddly in a motel, and we weren't sure if we were at the right place when we first arrived. But the atmosphere inside is beautiful, and could not be more at odds with its exterior. This restaurant is usually one of our favorites . Food is excellent , however tonight they suggested we try the crab cakes for a starter. These crab cakes were exceptional however it was sticker shock when we found out they were $31.00 each. I think we should have been told they were introducing a new crab cake starter and included the prince. These were not on the menu so "new starter" should have included the price. What a hidden gem this place is! I live in Philadelphia (moved here a year-and-a-half ago) and I go to the AMC Cherry Hill to see movies sometimes, so I pass by this place often. Most people probably wouldn't even consider going to a roadside steakhouse and raw bar next to a motel, but I thought it'd be fun to give it a try. The inside is not what I expected at all. It's a nice fancy restaurant and I suddenly felt underdressed in my casual clothes. On top of the atmosphere, the food and service are very good as well. The south jersey folks have been raving about Steak 38, so it was about time we give it a go. Many compare it to Capital Grille, which we couldn't really wrap our heads around. Read on for how we compare the two! First off the overall atmosphere: the restaurant is attached to a Days Inn and valet is offered on the weekends. When you walk in it seems like a tiny establishment but it definitely opens up into many dining areas. Looks wise, it certainly isn't Capital Grille. The room we dined in was spacious, which I liked. To start, J got the smoked cocktail, which he didn't really enjoy too much, but the table side service was classy. As for appetizers, I got the French onion soup and J got the Caesar salad. The soup was decent and J loved the Caesar. There is also an option to get the table side Caesar if you are ordering 2 or more. For entrees we both got filets, mine with bearnaise sauce and J got the truffle butter. Both were served with mashed potatoes and green beans. We also ordered a side of the creamed spinach. The filets were decent but not our favorites. The mashed and green beans were solid, but I wasn't very fond of the creamed spinach. We couldn't leave without dessert. I went with the chocolate mousse cake and J got the peanut butter pie. Both were pretty good! Overall, the meal and service were fine, but with comparable prices to Capital Grille, it's a no brainer which restaurant we'd prefer (CG). This place is unassuming and also attached to a roadside motel. This is the sole reason we have passed it by so many times. We decided to make a Friday date night here. They offer reservations on an app service . Peeve number one we sat at the bar for 15 minutes prior to table being ready. The bar itself has plenty of options and a nice selection of bourbon from small batch to house barreled option. The bar seemed vibrant but all the patrons seemed to know one another. Drinks were heavy pours strong drinks... I'm not complaining. We sat down in a back room with a fireplace. The overall mood is dim and lacks any light. It's hard to read a menu and see what you're eating. We made the best out of it . We browsed the menu and opted to start with the crispy spicy calamari. This dish was over breaded and had a few hot peppers scattered on the app. Was a let down to say the least. We ordered two steak items ... one was the filet royale and the other a ribeye. We added on the peppercorn creamy sauce add on which was good not necessary but good complement Both steaks were prepared perfectly Each comes with potato choice and green beans . Went here for a birthday. Got a call at like 4 from the restaurant to explain we needed to be there at our exact time of 8:00 pm (with a 15 minute grace window) or we lose our table. Out of fear we got there at 7:40. It appears to be valet only? I drove around the back and parked in the parking lot of the attached rent by the week or month motel. Checked in and than waited...waited until 8:25 pm. (Really not a fan of being called and told be there on time and than not taken until even after our window). As for the meal, I ordered the side of Blue Cheese chips as an appetizer (most appetizers were seafood). These were just like the ones they use to have at Fred and Ethel's (and like the ones my wife makes for me at home..her's are good!). We ordered steaks and roasted duck. For dessert my son got the HUGE carrot cake, I got the butter cake and the others got table side made bananas foster. The meal itself was good, and the waiter, Sam, was very nice. He actually was on Who Wants to be a Millionaire and WON (I wanted to ask why he was working, I know Uncle Sam takes 50%). He was a good waiter and an even better singer! The steaks were good and came with mashed potatoes and green beans. The steaks were "blackened" and cooked perfect. The green beans were crisp, and potatoes were good. I am taking this opportunity to reflect on my dinner with 8 friends last evening at Steak38, Cherry Hill, NJ. Overall, this was one of the finest dinners that I have had a pleasure to have as member of the Chaines des Rotisseurs, the esteemed and well-known gastronomy society. I have never dined at Steak38 despite my living in Cherry Hill since 1993 although I have passed it numerous times. We finally made a dinner reservation with our friends last night. IT was a spectacular evening of refined service from Peter and his colleague, who prepared likely the best table side Caesar salad in my memory. The salad was crisp and flavorful with infusion of the anchovy well disseminated through the salad. The bourbon Millionaire drink was absolutely the finest bourbon-based drink that I have had and was the glowing perspective of the four of us who had the same drink The fresh clams, the clams prepared Italiano were superb as were the other appetizers. The prime rib was humongous, well more than a human could eat with a flavorful salt and pepper crust and was just delicious. It was an evening of cordiality with Peter and the other servers and we discussed the absence of a wine locker which is what I have at the CG in Cherry Hill. Dining room was classic and dark with amazing historical pictures of Sinatra and the rat pack Please allow me the direct suggestion that you consider such an option. One of my friends is a well-known contractor and builder of multiple Steven Starr restaurants and would be very happy to discuss the potential if desired. As a wine collector myself, I would be thrilled to move my collection from CG to your restaurant. I wish to close that I felt a true affinity for Peter, who shared his own personal tragedy of his wife. As a physician and a human, I cried. I really felt much emotion last evening. I've driven past Steak 38 countless times - finally I made it there with my husband to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. A few notes; - Parking - Valet Only (free) - Staff - Very welcoming & attentive. - Food - delicious! Make sure to get some of the table side prepared dishes (Cesar Salad & Banana Foster) The restaurant is connect to a motel, but once you're inside you have no clue. This was quite an experience. Steak 38 is attached to a generic motel, the space has no windows, but I guess that's ok because the view wouldn't be great. We had a drink at the bar, most were on the sweet side. Then we sat for dinner. Our waiter, Sam, was the best! We picked the PEI oysters and they were delicious. The table side Caesar salad was perfect. My friend said the crab cakes were the best she's ever had, and she knows her crab cakes. The aged t-bone had a great char and fantastic flavor. Filet was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The table side bananas foster was a superb grand finale to a great meal. We never thought we'd find such good food attached to an Express Inn. read more

Food arrived exactly how it was ordered; service was excellent and on time; ambience was a nice nostalgic experience for me and seating was nicely planned for the crowd. The music made it extra special. Table side prep for bananas foster made me smile. The greeting at the door and leaving makes that 5 th star. read more

It was fine overall, the food was definitely the highlight, drinks okay-nothing special. We were seated in the back room (the black curtain room), table for two. It was a Wednesday evening, very busy and although the server was super kind and was working as hard as he possibly could, sadly I have to say that service was lacking. In our opinion, this lies heavily on management. We placed our orders, were served our first drink then soon after our dinner arrived via a runner. It was prepared correctly, hot & delicious (filet/crab cake/salmon special/mashed potatoes/green beans). Then, this is where it kinda went off the rails (for us). From this point on, we were on our own, no check in from service to confirm that our meal was received to our ordering preference (filet temperature), no follow up to our (now empty) drinks...almost 2 hours into our sitting and still no check in, our dinner plates and glasses had been cleared. On numerous occasions, management was seen stepping in at the room entrance panning the space quickly then exiting. Perhaps, she could have "jumped in" or even approached & "inquired" to the quests as to how their experience was going??? This is known to be a very nice establishment with a huge following, so we simply expected more. Finally, we were approached by our server and we placed a 2nd drink order only to sit and wait so long that my husband got up and walked over to the bar himself, was told that my drink had already been delivered to me....WHAT??? No, not true! It became awkward at this point. The management knew we were not pleased. She approached and was apologetic. We ordered a dessert which was ultimately comped along with our 2nd drink, which was not expected, yet appreciated. We stressed the point to management that we did NOT blame the server for the lack of attention, as he was clearly working as hard as he possibly could. Bottom line, delicious food, no doubt!!!
