Like many others, I really WANT this place to be better. The prime real estate overlooking the water, right off the busy road, close to the cute downtown...but it falls quite short. My husband and I had driven by multiple times and finally stopped in with a family member on a Saturday for lunch.
There's not too much parking in their small lot, but it was not hard to find free street parking right down the block. No biggie.
As soon as we walked in though, I was a little worried. Any time a restaurant has carpet everywhere, I'm a little worried. Ewwww. Come on, carpet? I worked at a restaurant and mopped floors nightly. I know how gross floors can get in 1 day at a restaurant. I can only imagine how disgusting that carpet is. Yuck. BUT we were all very hungry so we decided to stay. The "host" or whatever he was, barely made eye contact and mumbled that we would be taken care of in a minute (ok, maybe he wasn't the regular host, but it seems like small place, teach everyone to smile, make eye contact and say "hi, how are you?" geez). We got escorted by our very friendly waitress to our table, which was the back corner booth...Oh boy, this thing was like a trapezoid, it wasn't even square and the seats were hard and lumpy. Come on! Aren't booths supposed to be comfy? Good thing there were only 3 of us.
The food was all fine, nothing great, nothing awful, but nothing stood out at all. I thought lunch was a bit overpriced, especially since it was nothing special. I'd be willing to pay that much if things had a little flavor / visual interest.
The wait staff was very friendly, maybe just a touch slow, but we weren't in a rush so it didn't bother us.
I really wish this place could make an effort. I feel like they've just given up. It could be an amazing place with lines out the door if they just stepped it up! C'mon people!
Here's what this place could do to make a good upgrade:
- 1: Upgrade/edit the menu. I was only there for lunch, but it was all pretty blah. Give things some flavor, plate things nicely. Throw in some lighter lunch options. You could even pare down the lunch menu to make it smaller and simpler, a million options aren't necessary. Quality over quantity.
- 2: Makeover the space! Paint is cheap. Everything felt dark and sticky and a little sad. The dark paint colors, disgusting carpet and sad, messy bathrooms just need some help. You're right by the ocean and I know it's cliche, but how about some light, airy colors? Medium blue wainscoting, light sandy beige walls, wood or tile floors would do a world of difference. Oh, and make the booths comfortable.
-3: I mentioned them above as far as decor, but put someone on bathroom cleaning duty every hour. Make them check it off on a sheet in the kitchen or in the bath. I worked at a restaurant, it's not that hard to do a quick sweep/check of the bathrooms. Messy bathrooms (a public space) really make me wonder what the kitchen (a private space) looks like.
I hope this place wakes up. I want it to be the place that it looks like from the outside. It looks so cute and beachy from the outside! I imagined comfy, family-friendly service with hometown pub food as well as some light options. I know they could do it! Make Hingham proud! read more
