Food was great overall, but our server Charles seemed either very new or a bit out of it. We only saw him when he first took our order and again when he brought the check. He came back toward the end of our meal to ask how everything was, then packed up my leftovers. After that, he walked around the restaurant for about five minutes with my to-go bag and even brought us the check before realizing it was our food he had been holding. It was a little confusing that he forgot which table's food he had just packed up minutes earlier. It seemed like he might have been having an off or sluggish day. Aside from that, the food itself was really good. For breakfast, it might help to have two separate lines out front, one for reservations and one for walk-ins. There were several people with reservations waiting in line who were getting comments from others about "cutting," which created some awkward tension. I know it is a new restaurant and still working through things, but a bit more staff and menu training would go a long way. Staff should not have to read ingredients off the guests menu when asked questions about a dish. It might also help to have clearer signage letting reservation guests know they can head inside instead of waiting in line. read more

To start...service was just terrible. Our waiter was slow from the start to the end. Multiple times our party of 4 looked around because we hadn't seen him for 20 minutes. Apparently you can't get refills of ice'd tea, they just took my glass. Refills of water take a little bit too. We ordered 2 fillets a T-bone and the redfish. NOT ONE STEAK CAME OUT COOKED PROPERLY. This is Texas, and in Houston steak houses are everywhere, but this place was able to find the one cook/ chef/ grill master, whatever that doesn't know how to cook steak. On top of that, the redfish was only mediocre, parts of it were inedible. I should add that at one point a manager came over and comped two of the steaks. When she stopped by, she left us with a quote, "When you go out to eat it should be awesome." Nothing about this experience was awesome. Warning, if you get the "chocolate pie", think of it more as a brownie with a crust than a chocolate pie. We also had the ice cream and apple pie...not bad, but NOT "awesome". Stopped by on a Sunday without a reservation and was lucky to grab a patio seat - would recommend a reservation on high traffic days. We had the frozen espresso martini, the Fancy LITT (Long Island) and s house chardonnay. Enjoyed all - but martini was our favorite. We had the biscuits and homemade strawberry jam...YES. Advice - ask for a side of their sausage gravy. Also, the table next to us ordered the cinnamon roll and split it between 4 - they were super happy with their choice. We ordered the Migas, side of hash browns with everything added, sausage and a side fried egg. We shared everything and were very happy with our choices. Brunch review only. Star Rover is a shadow of the previous Superica, which was one of our favorite weekend brunch haunts for the past year. This newly branded concept is all flash and significantly less substance. The decor has changed to include checkered tablecloths covering the previous wood and monotone dishware from the fun texmex. Service was fine, a little disorganized but improving. The complimentary dreamily-thin tortilla chips and delicious salsas are no longer served. The menu has significantly decreased in size for brunch, with now a handful of sweet options, some breakfast tacos, and a few higher end entrees. There are still à la carte items, but fewer than before. Breakfast tacos: Mediocre with somewhat doughy tortillas, pretty greasy chorizo, and lackluster shredded cheese. I also wasn't a fan of the paper ketchup container holding salsa, as it was difficult to pour and easier to smear. This breakfast taco was incredibly forgettable. Cinnamon rolls in a skillet: Cute concept, over the top preparation. The cinnamon rolls were absolutely drowned in butter, so much so I had to tear off the top to get any portions that weren't soggy. There was also so much cream cheese icing it was essentially all I could taste. When I actually tasted a bit of the cinnamon roll, the flavor and rise on it was pretty good. The middle portions were slightly underbaked, though some may prefer the more gooey texture. Biscuits and jam: Carried over from neighbor La Lucha, these biscuits and preserves are still dang good. Buttery, decadent biscuits with homemade strawberry preserves will always be a temptation for me. Hash browns: Super oily and didn't taste fresh. Also somehow comes with a slice of semi-melted cheese on top? Pass. Bacon: Still as good as previously, with a perfect thickness and nice chew yet still crispy along the edges. Thank goodness. Pancakes: Superica's hotcakes were a must-order every brunch meal. The flavor is similar, but the impressive size has now shrunk to normal pancake size and significantly decreased the novelty. I was told they would be fluffier, but after trying them a few times, I don't think there's a real difference. The warm syrup is still good. I had high hopes for Star Rover, but I don't know that I'll be back. Based on other reviews, dinner doesn't seem promising either. Superica, you are sorely missed. read more

Why 5 stars? Because I love the mix of casual and non. --- --- --- The concept of Star Rover is great: it's kind of an old school steakhouse, where you can order a $62 ribeye, but looking around the dining area, many people are in hats and shorts. Speaking of, I kind of skipped ahead in the story, but the idea here is that they have 9 main entrees on the menu and they all just come with the same sides: a salad, bread, fries and onion rings. The salad and the bread were top notch. I hate bleu cheese so I kept that on the side, but the green goddess dressing it comes with was great. It was a big salad too. The bread is covered in 58 ounces of butter, and swimming in it too. I could eat 100 of these rolls. My ribeye came out, and sadly, it was obviously very overcooked. I took about 3 bites and was really disappointed by it. I eventually had to just ask them for a new one, and I absolutely never do that. They couldn't have been more gracious about it though, and the second version was so, so much better. There is some kind of green substance on top of it, which I assumed was chimichurri, but it didn't really taste like it, so then I assumed it was something else. But later, I had a really heavy garlic taste in my mouth, so I think it was indeed, the chimi. The fries and onion rings were good, but my wife and I both felt like it was just a lot of fried food in the end. Not that anyone was forcing us to almost finish the plate, but if you put fries and onion rings in front of me, what do you think is gonna happen? We finished with some soft serve and pie. I ordered coconut, which was good, but incredibly super sweet to the point where it was almost too much. The ice cream hit the spot perfectly. We want to come back again for brunch! We had a spectacular dinner here on their second night open. They really stay true to their mission of making the steakhouse attainable again with a casual welcoming atmosphere that still feels elevated and special in its experience. Prepare to leave stuffed to the gills as the food here is excellent and portions are huge. They are very generous in the included side salad, onion rings, fries, and bread so you will absolutely be full and satisfied when you leave all for a great fair price. We started with the servers recommended appetizer of potato skins that come with a really great jalapeño ranch dipping sauce. We then shared several of the entrée is including the T-bone steak, ribeye, and chicken fried chicken. All were cooked exactly as ordered and the CFC gravy had a really nice kick to it. We then finished the meal with their soft serve ice cream as we all know that dessert goes into a second stomach. Several nice cocktails and cheap beer on draft rounded out the meal. This place is as Austin as it gets, so if you come here from say, New York, the vibe is completely different so be prepared. A very casual atmosphere, live music on stage which you pay a cover for, and steak with the Southern fixings like Fries and Onion Rings (very thick) The server was very friendly, but the host took forever to come to their station and seat us, which was a tad annoying. The steaks were overcooked, they don't have sides like Spinach or Mashed Potatoes, and after seeing this on Insta as a highly recommended Steak spot, I was letdown. Ugh. I had such high hopes for Star Rover--the old-fashioned steakhouse concept is such a great idea. But our visit was less than ideal. Service-wise, the hostess forgot about us for almost 10 minutes--when I re-approached the hostess stand after she asked us to wait, she didn't even recognize me from a few minutes ago. Drinks came out after our food, etc. And I heard a manager apologizing to another table nearby and comping their meal, so we weren't the only table having issues. Food-wise, I liked the appetizers, but the main entrees ranged from OK to not good. The rolls that come with the meal are delicious--mostly butter, as a good roll should be. The salad that also comes with the meal was also pretty good too--a classic salad with steak. My friend ordered a steak medium rare, but it came out basically well done. That overcooked steak was sent back, and we then split my chicken fried chicken. Tried to walk in on a Thursday and got hit with a 2-hour wait--so we came back the next week with a reservation and were seated immediately (party of 3). The seating is spaced out so you don't feel like you are sitting on top of each other which is great to be able to have conversations with your group. Service was excellent. The staff clearly works as a team and stayed attentive the entire time without being overbearing. Ordered the CFC--and only got to enjoy a few bites before I was full because the rolls, salad, and onion rings that come with it were so good (and a lot). Potato skins were a little different--more like a twice-baked--but still good. My husband's filet was one of the better ones he's had compared to other steakhouses. Came here for brunch with my dad after hearing the pancakes were "heavenly" and I had to see for myself. First visit was a little rocky. The food itself was really good and portions were generous (I had the rancher's breakfast, my dad had steak and eggs, and we shared the cinnamon roll), but the service was pretty slow and everything came out cold. That said, the manager Courtney completely turned the experience around. She was kind, attentive, and really took our feedback seriously. She invited us back to try dinner, which we appreciated. We came back the next week for my birthday and WOW... completely different experience. The new star river is nestled next to the infamous La Lucha restaurant in the Heights. I will say I loved the concept of family style sides and the never ending option to order more. I had the chicken fried chicken and unfortunately the flavor was good but I had a really bad cut of chicken. The chicken breast still had a large layer of skin that was very gummy and unappetizing. The fries were also very salty, but I did enjoy the massive salad! The service was great and TJ waiter did a good job and educating us on the learning curve of how the menu worked. So happy for a new concept from this stellar restaurant group! Although I loved Superica, I was absolutely delighted to see Star Rover as the new spot in town. Walking in makes you feel right at home as a native Texan, and has this sort of nostalgia that only a local could understand. With the skeeball machines ready to be played while you wait and the checkered table clothes, there's something that about it that just makes you feel like it's always been a fixture in your life. I mean, there's literally fresh pies sitting on a table when you walk in! The staff was super friendly and informative. Our table had a lot of requests, like for extra blue cheese and rolls, and they were met with a smile and quick turnaround. The manager Courtney greeted our table warmly like we had known her a lifetime and made sure we were served as if we were family. It felt truly like an experience and was wonderful steakhouse quality food without the stuffy feeling and long wait times those normally come with. Overall a great place to check out for dinner. The steaks were great and cooked perfectly. My group had the ribeye, T-Bone and fillet. The ribeye and T-Bones were thinner cuts of meat which I find is easier to enjoy and to cook perfectly. We had also had the shrimp cocktail and potato skins as appetizers. When we arrived at the host stand, we were seated right away. Our server, Charles B., greeted us in a very calm manner and simply asked if we had been there before. Since we said no, he asked what we would like to order. He didn't offer drinks, but overall he was very quiet and minimal in conversation considering we hadn't been there. I wanted to love Star Rover but we had a rough start that was hard to overcome. We were seated promptly for our 5:45pm reservation but probably at the worst table in the restaurant (another 2 top was open by the window the entire time we were there). They were crowded for 5:45 but they weren't on a wait. After being seated for 5 mins the hostess filled our water glasses but our waiter didn't greet us until 6pm, after I asked the hostess where he was. He was fine for the remainder of the meal. I got a steak and my husband the burger. Both were good, not exceptional. My steak was cooked perfectly but because it was served on a cold plate, it didn't stay warm. The ambiance and the sides were the highlight and the drink menu is well priced. However, due to the service issues we likely won't be returning anytime soon. read more

Drinks: unsweet tea and coffee - surprisingly tasty Apps: Vegetable crudités - high quality fresh vegetables with a unique dip. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, it was refreshing and help our meal feel more balanced! Brunch mains: 1. steak and eggs - delicious!! The steak was perfect, I've never had a skirt steak that well cooked. I'm sure the steaks for dinner are just as good or better. The hashbrowns were really good too, they are covered in American cheese so if you don't like that kind get it removed. 2. Breakfast tacos - also amazing, best breakfast tacos I've had in a loonnggg time and they reminded me of superica . We got one with crispy potato and one with bacon, both on corn. The crispy potato in the taco was actually crunchy, 10/10. I would come back just to get the tacos tbh!! Gluten free review: they do seem to have a decent amount of gluten free options. The A2 steak sauce is gluten free, the French fries are gluten free but share a fryer I believe. Same things for the crispy potato skins. They offer corn tortillas for the breakfast tacos. There's a handful of gluten free apps as well. The waiter was super patient with all my questions and was happy to go ask the kitchen what was gluten free and what was not. Ambience - the inside is a cool saloon vibe. Texas country music playing and dim lights. They change the red checkered table clothes in between each table which I love for cleanliness. At the moment there is no outdoor seating but hopefully that will change! All in all, we will be back for brunch and dinner! I was expecting average over priced food but the quality and amount of food you get is great. After the skirt steak brunch, I bet I'd be happy eating the cheapest steak on the menu for dinner. So we did the friends and family serving at 1 pm on a Friday. Admittedly hoping for dinner service but got brunch instead. I'll start with food was GOOD. They were seemingly out of Chicken Fried Chicken and Steak (and eggs) though they def came out to other tables while we were there. WOW! Ambiance is casual but nice enough it still feels like a "steak" spot. I was insanely impressed with this steak- I've been to almost every fancy steakhouse in Houston and this steak surpassed most of them that are almost 2-3x the price. Each steak comes with salad, bread, and 50/50 fries/onion rings. While it is on the pricey side with 6oz filet at $55/plate when you include the sides it is WELL worth it. It's a 5 star steak without all the fuss of the fancier places. Definitely recommend- our steaks were cooked perfect and our service from Kat and Sav made our experience extra special. Chicken fried chicken was totally flavorless, seems like 0 salt in the brine if they even brined it. interesting that the CFC is so bad when their other restaurant literally next door has some of the best fried chicken in Houston. the potato wedges were actually really good and remained crispy even when they got cold. probably the best potato wedge I've had. pie was good. read more
