Props to Billy Liu (assistant manager) and his team today. There was an issue with the copy center (equipment failure, no fault of the team there) and not only did he jump on board to try to fix it, he was apologetic and did right by me in the end. Actually, multple people there tried their best to pitch in. Except for Nordstroms, many of us often don't think of big retail spots as having good customer service. I have no idea what the experience is at other Staples, but the guys in the PB store are on it. They also have Twizzler Cherry Bites, which more often than not I buy on my way out the door and ruin my appetite. Thanks again Billy, I'm stoked on your team. Today I went and it could be because they redesigned the store, but everyone was exceptionally nice and looking to help me out finding what I needed. In the past my needs were pretty basic, but I did have some questions about a printer and one of the sales people who has been there a few years (forget name, but tall guy, long-ish hair) seemed to know a lot about what he was talking about and made some good recommendations. The 2 stars is specifically for Chris in the printing department as he actually earned them (thank you, Chris, for great customer service) while I can't say the same for his coworker (can't remember his name). Chris addressed me as soon as I was in line for the printing services center and got an idea of what I needed. Unfortunately, it wasn't completed correctly the first time (the other guy completed the work). When I came back and noticed this, Chris fixed it immediately. Didn't make me wait another hour for 2 copies, thank goodness! I also had to print 2 b&w pages and the computers were horribly slow connecting. There is also a cheaper option just using the printers, but that wasn't pointed out to me. Minus the 3 other stars for the other guy (Star Wars tats on arm) who didn't get my order right, made me wait an hour, and the slow/expensive internet connection for printing. All of their machines are broken and they tell the customers to use the broken machines on the outside of the copy center this is not stable employees problem this is management poor management should I say.i'm surprised that corporate does not shut this place down due to the lack of support they have for their work staff and equipment in general. The most un-obliging lazy incompetent and rude people employed here - I cannot say "working here" because it would be a vague inaccurate description. I have been there on numerous occasions and no-one can figure out how to use the copy machines or cash registers. Another time I requested the location of a particular product that I have been buying from Staples for years. The staff member I approached informed me that it was not sold by Staples. So I searched the store until I found what I was looking for. Unfortunately I needed more than were on the shelves. So I went back to the loafer to have her check stock. Her response to me was "NO!" I asked if that meant she was not going to help me or she knew they did not have more in stock. Her response: "No to both." At least her response was honest. DO NOT COME HERE FOR PRINTING!! This place is the most unorganized staples with an insanely rude staff, I would give them ZERO stars because of their "printing manager" Edith. This women created no solution to a printing service that I needed sooner than later and explained how I need to GO HOME and get MY LAPTOP and bring it BACK INTO THE STORE!!!! After I sent it directly to staples, there had to be another way!! I purchased an office chair on line and did not have my rewards number available. At a subsequent visit to the store to get the award points I was given the Staples Award Brochure and told I had to call the 800 number listed. Called and was finally able to reach a person who told me "on line purchases do not qualify for Rewards points." I read her the exact info from their brochure that stated: "Members receive rewards on their account for ... purchases made at Staples u. s.stores or on Staples.com. Her reply was that I must have an old brochure. What a bunch of garbage. Will not be shopping at Staples anymore and hope others do the same. What a terrible company. What a BS response from Staples. Having this Staples in Pacific Beach has been an enormous benefit to me. The store is top notch in terms of products offered, cleanliness, inventory, lighting and layout. PB does not have many corporate chain stores so having Staple is much appreciated. The managers are always available ... which is great because it means that if there is ever a snag or misunderstanding then the top guy at the store can get involved. There have been a couple of times that I wanted to discuss a matter of something being advertised and it not being exactly what was being sold and the manager has made good. I like the latitude that Staple corporate gives store managers. Overall this class act is a welcome addition to this beach community. read more

So I stop in on Wednesday 10/14/2015 wanting to purchase a Microsoft Surface Pro notebook. The young tech guy is knowledgeable and filling me in on the features and I'm sold ready to buy. Out of nowhere this bald headed manager walks up, doesn't say "excuse me" or anything as he interrupts our conversation and tells the sales guy to help a customer he dragged over to find a USB cord. This dumbass manager interrupts my attempt to buy the $900.00 Surface Pro because he thinks he's to important to help a customer find a stupid cord. The sales guy says sorry he'll be right back and scoots off to help the other customer. I was too pissed to say anything I knew I would regret. I waited five minutes for the sales guy to finish up with the big money sale of a USB cord but the other customer kept asking more stupid questions. I left after waiting five minutes and went to Office Depot to make my purchase. Memo to bald headed manager, "you need more training". Do not interrupt your sales people when they are with a customer. Learn how to say "excuse me". You are not that important even though you may think you are running around with your little headset on. Think about it...$900.00 no sale for a $15.00 sale...I'm sure your district manager won't be happy about this. read more

I came in this morning for a copy job and had the pleasure of working with Chuy M. One of my pet peeves about Staples and other office supply chains is how difficult it can be to find someone who can help you. When you finally get help, it's often little more than a finger pointing to an area of the store. This was not the case with Chuy! He took the time to help me, and took genuine interest in what I needed, advising me and making my project the best it could be. Thank you, Chuy! read more

15 month long nightmare!!! --Do NOT take your computer to their "Tech Support" Department!-- I originally took my HP notebook into them LAST January--Yes, meaning January 2013--when it [my laptop] showed a message stating it need a new internal battery and shut down. I relayed what the message had said to Staples' "qualified staff" in their "Easy Tech" department and paid them the diagnostic charge. Within a few days I received a phone call from one of these "qualified" employees; who informed me that my notebook did not need a new internal battery; however it did require a new motherboard. Not being a computer-expert by ANY means, I had put my faith in Staples and their staff, so I trusted this diagnosis and paid them more money to go ahead and order a new motherboard and install it. (This process took several weeks.) $240 later; I got the phone call informing me that my laptop was fixed and ready for pickup. As soon as I got it home and plugged it in; it presented with the exact same message it had displayed months before regarding the internal battery and promptly shut down. I went right back to Staples Tech counter and told the young guy what happened. And I got to see the "oh shit"-expression on his face and his coworkers' as they realized I had not needed a new motherboard at all. I left my laptop with them again, to order and replace the internal battery. Which they did do, over the course of weeks, as well as damaging two separate parts on my computer. They broke the CD drive and the touch screen control strip at the top of my keyboard. They ordered the parts and fixed what they broke. It had been about 6-7 months at this point. I took my laptop home; had it for about a week; when the motherboard (the one Staples unnecessarily installed) crashed. I, again, took it back to Staples' Easy Tech department. I had to leave my laptop with them again while they ordered a replacement motherboard. More months passed. I was told that THREE motherboards they ordered, arrived at their store defective. I was told that TWO arrived with water damage...? In either November or December 2013; eleven or twelve months after initially bringing in my computer and paying $240, the store finally sent my computer out to be worked on. I finally got my HP laptop returned to me in January 2014 and told it was unfixable. The manager said he was only authorized to compensate me with $100 toward a new computer; even though I paid them $240 (and I had already; finally; purchased a new computer from Best Buy) and told me I would need to contact their District Manager Charles Douglas if I wanted more compensation than that. Which I do. I want my money back. Last I spoke with Charles Douglas was right before Christmas and just before he left on vacation. I didn't have my computer returned and declared broken until January. I have not been able to get ahold of him since. I have left countless messages. I have stopped in the store and spoken with the assistant manager. The assistant manager left me a message saying that he had spoken with Mr. Douglas who claimed he has been trying to call me. I have received no missed call nor voice message from him. I'll be emailing the CEO and Customer Service department a link to this review/horror story. As well as forwarding one to Charles Douglas. Point is, if you decide to put your faith in this store's tech department: you have been warned. Booooo Staples read more

This review is about the IT side of the business. The retail layout and print shop are fine, however, as a former dot.com CEO I know a lot about assessing IT prowess and manners & this team did not meet basic expectations. First, I called and spoke to Billy Lui the assistant manager and told him my PC wouldn't start. Being experienced I told him I was pretty sure it was a dead hard drive and asked him what would it cost to diagnose this? I was told there would be no charge. I asked again to confirm this and he said no charge. When I get to the store, not only did Billy tell me there actually is a $69 diagnostic charge (they must check everything even if we think its just the hard drive), he actually had the temerity to accuse me (his potential customer) of willfully misinterpreting what he said over the phone. I find this surprising when the usual credo for service based businesses is that "the customer is always right". According to Billy NOT only are customers NOT right, they are LYING to him. It's even more surprising to suggest that I could misinterpret the statement "There is no charge to diagnose your computer problem". It be one thing perhaps if I was a poorly dressed college student, but here I was clearly a 50's executive who lives in La Jolla. I have better things to do than lie and while $69 is not a big deal, its really the principle of being misled. Did Billy finally relent? Oh no he went the full 9 yards and insisted on charging me, but as an after thought agreed to apply the $69 towards any repair. Ever hear of the term bait and switch? That's what this felt like. So guess what? It turns out the drive is bad. Billy insists that he needs to not only replace the hard drive, but that any system data he can recover from the hard drive will be suspect so he needs to do a full re-install of the system, etc etc. His hard drive proposed cost and repair exceed by about $150 the cost of getting a new computer. Is this really what it should cost? No, I know better but the prices are pretty inflated even for the parts. However, I'm already out $69 courtesy Billy's little trick there. I figure we could perhaps apply the $69 to his reinstall of Windows 7 & figure I will install my own hard drive and save the $90 charge for that too (it's about 15 minutes of labor so unless this work is worth $360/hour they are very pricey). I explain to Billy, that I would like to do some of this myself and will come back. He assures me that they will have a full record and remember to apply the $69 when I return. However, at my insistence he begrudgingly makes a copy of the order with the statement that the $69 is to be applied to other work. Guess what Billy is not there when I return. Was he fired? No he was promoted. Did anyone remember or have any record of the $69 and that it was supposed to be applied. Nope. Its a good thing I insisted I get a copy of this in writing as they were already arguing against covering this. I am certain they WOULD NOT have honored it had I not found the copy and showed it to them. The other thing I should say at this point is that when I removed the casing to replace the drive I found screws missing and one screw that was only half way screwed in. These were the screws holding the hard drive to the chassis. This is really shoddy work. Do you know what happened when I pointed this out to Jestin and asked that they replace the screws (remember Billy is gone now)? Do you think they believe or honor customers? Nope Jestin found a tech who insisted that the screws were missing (he actually remembers the screws, but not the $69. I'd laugh, but this is so contradictory its really sad). So he accuses me of losing the screws? He wants to charge me like $90 to open the computer and put the screws back in (about 10 minutes work tops). So now I realize it's not just Billy and Jestin's policy to screw customers & to tell them they are criminals and then nickel and dime them for every little thing. No it's actually company policy. So would I recommend their IT service? NO!!!! First, they can't even put the machine back together properly without losing screws. Second its pretty clear they are NOT customer oriented. They seem to be so profit driven that they have forgotten to care for their customers. So how much would it have costed to install Windows 7 (which takes very little work, you just need the CD) $99. Turns out it costs less to get the CD from Amazon and do it yourself. Are they really providing any valuable service here? I'm struggling to find the answer to that question. My advice if your computer is broken, DO NOT BRING IT TO STAPLES. read more

This place is ridiculous- it's like any other Staples in it's product offering, but completely incapable in terms of service. Due to it's proximity to where I live, have found myself here on more than one occasion and the lack of ability of the employees was consistent on each of my visits. On the last visit the clerk was having difficulties with the credit card machine and kept getting distracted by fellow employees and customers. He eventually gave up on fixing the issue with credit card machine saying that there was nothing he could do. This was apparently the manager on duty. It's now obvious to me why brick and mortar office supply stores are going out of business in light of alternatives such as amazon and other online stores. read more

I went to buy a storage tote for $6.00 they didn't have the matching top and gave me a grey top with a blue storage tote, the second time this happened. Had to look for a salesperson. I will still shop there. Next time I will come in as soon as their shipment of totes come in. read more

This review is not a reflection upon the company or this particular store. I received very rude service today from Calvin. It's a shame that with so much unemployment today a store would retain a rude employee who does nothing to enhance the shopping experience of its customers. When giving my Rewards number after the purchase had been rung up, Calvin told me the number has to be given before ringing up the purchase or it can't be used. I asked if this was a new rule because in all the years I've been shopping at Staples I have always given my Rewards number at the end of the purchase. He told me I never had. The rules of the store are not at issue. What is at issue is this is an employee who should be in a position where he doesn't have to deal with customers or he should be given some training as to how customers should be treated. read more

I went to staples to make a quick purchase before I head to work. I got the item I needed and went straight to the register but there was a long line with one register open. And I noticed the lady calling for someone for help to get the line moving but no one came to open the second register to assist her and i did see another sales associate walking around in the store. Are you guys short staffed? If so you guys need to hire more people who are reliable and responsible. I wouldve given this staples only one star but the customer service from the lady on the register was great. I believe her name was alyssa. Good job! It's Staples. Need some business supplies, including electronics like computers, networking hardware etc, this is where to go. Do a little online shopping first, they are generally very competitive, but you can occasionally do better at Costco or Frys depending on what you are purchasing. read more

They always have great coupon deals that we save and stack up when we wanna buy something, usually saving more than we spend. Go here for work supplies mostly and nothing too special. It's weird but they always seem to be out of the thing we need "We just stopped carrying that item" seems to be the standard response. Sometimes the staff is helpful, other times u can't find then at all. Think office ghost town. Ease of access from the main road and easy to find. read more

I'm sad that they closed the store in La Jolla Village Square and merged it into the new Staples location in Pacific Beach. The store seems small and doesn't have as much selection as they used to. Long check out lines - the last few times I went. It is near impossible to get someone to help you and they are not very friendly. I'll stick to Costco or Amazon. Do not use this location! Go to sports arena or mission valley instead or find another office supply store. We live a few blocks away and every couple of months I think, we should give it another try because it is close to us and every time afterwards I think stop doing this to yourself. Every visit is worst than the last. This includes customer service, over charging for items that are on sale, and different prices than what is listed on the shelf. Jose the general manager gave us the worst customer service I have ever experienced. We came in to ship a small box (4x6") and forgot shipping tape. Jose noticed we did not have tape and instead of lending us 2 TINY STRIPS for our super small box, he pointed to the tape for sale and left us no other option but to purchase some. We even saw another staff member pull tape out of the drawer right behind the counter he stood at, right in front of us! It'd be understandable if we had a huge box or multiple packages that needed tape but we only had ONE TINY BOX that needed two tiny strips to seal. Jose would not budge so we grabbed the damn tape and when we finished packaging our box, another staff member rang up our purchase but did not charge us for the tape, so we left and went about our day. Two minutes later, Jose called my cell phone and left a voicemail stating that I needed to come back and pay for the tape. SERIOUSLY?!? If Jose could have been at least half decent of a person from the start, he wouldn't have created such an inconvenience for ALL of us. Jose, If you're that concerned with us buying the tape then maybe YOU should have rang us up! It's not our fault your staff didn't charge us so why should we be at fault and have to come back?! We ended up going back later that day just because we were concerned our package would never get delivered and of course Jose had already left. All the staff was confused and had no idea what to do, but of course still made sure to charge us for the tape! The whole situation was too ridiculous and frustrating to even argue about and not worth any more of our time. We paid for the stupid tape and left, irritated once again. It's not about the money, but the whole concept of it all! Jose needs to stop micromanaging his staff and learn how to treat people respectfully and deliver better customer service, he's the GM for crying out loud. Maybe his staff would be less confused about what to do too, but this review isn't really for them. Needless to say we will never be coming back to this Staples unless our package doesn't get delivered. Worst shipping experience EVER. read more
