Food is just mediocre if not worse and extremely pricey. You can tell its not good quality ingredients you're getting for that price point. Coffee was serviceable though for a fix. I've seen a mix of rude and very nice servers in the two times I have gone. Employees on their phones at the front of house is not a good look either. Interior is about as standard as it gets. I got a burger for breakfast. I know what your thinking but it was so good. It was a 9.5/10. My mom got pancakes and really liked them. My sister got a panini and wasn't a big fan she couldn't finish it. But she liked the fries. The service was pretty good it wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular. It was just normal service. The place had a good morning feel that just made you feel welcome. And it had relaxing music and tv's with beachfronts and other relaxing pictures on them. Overall the place had great food. Stopped by to get some breakfast to go. The staff was lovely and took their time to explain dishes to us. It was so cool to have fresh squeezed JUICE! Was staying at the hotel next door and stopped in for a late breakfast after the morning meetings. Waited a while, which is fine, but when the food came it was absolute inedible. The home fries which took up most of the plate were like thick cut half cooked potato chips that were ice cold and soggy. I ate maybe 15% of what was on the plate, and it tasted really funky so i asked for my check. The woman at the register, who I now suspect is the owner asked if everything was okay and I told her honestly that I couldn't eat it. She kind of gave a shrug of the shoulders and happily ran the card. I got sick after I left, so since I was still at the hotel went back and asked them to void it. This woman threw a fit and loudly tried to mock my tip, which was over 20% so I'm not really sure what she was on about. Bottom line, go literally anywhere else for breakfast unless you want to be throwing up later. There's a cabaret across the street, I would trust their buffet more than I would trust their food. read more

I went with a group of 4 earlier this week. My meal was disgusting. It's extremely expensive and definitely not worth it. The waitress was sweet but got the order wrong for another person in the group. We took a lot of the food home for the dog. The cotton candy machine is $10 which is a total ripoff. The strawberries were mildly okay. The syrup was fake. My mom got the huevo ranchero which was quite possibly the worst meal she's ever paid money for. The beans and eggs were the only edible things on the plate, and the "sausage" had the consistency of rubber. The homefries were soggy and undercooked, and had the flavor of only potato, sort of. Attention fellow young Portlanders hoping for an outskirts-of-town, cheap hideaway: this is not the breakfast oasis you think it is. I'd rather wait in line at Bayside American Cafe for 48 hours straight than again make the mistake I made this morning. It is clear that Stacks ownership paid dearly for a social media manager, and far more than they were willing to pay a chef. The Instagram, menu, and decor of the restaurant take notes from places like Milk Bar, Eggslut, and other perceptibly cool spots around the country. Unfortunately, Stacks is all image and no substance. I ordered what seems to be one of Stacks's signature items; a pancake roll thing. Mine came with unseasoned scrambled eggs, unmelted Kraft orange cheddar singles, and more sour cream than should ever be put near a pancake. It was very unpleasant and tasteless. Additionally, butter was served in a plastic takeout sauce cup, which I found not only bizarre from an environmental standpoint, but it served as a stunning visual metaphor for the restaurant as a whole: flashy and hip veneer with the heart and soul of a greasy spoon. I love a good dive, but not when it is presented to me as something entirely different. The staff was very nice and attentive, which is why it pains me to write this review in an attempt to keep people out of this diner. But if I can help even one person from being duped like me, it's probably worth it. read more

This is the Fyre Festival of breakfast spots. The Instagram, website, neon sign in the entrance... led me to believe I was headed into a good new Portland brunch spot. Oh no... I fell hook, line, and sinker into a horrible trap. I ordered a latte. I'm a millennial, I'm a coffee snob... I'm horrible, I know. I was brought a glass of bad coffee with half and half in it, topped with whipped cream. I couldn't drink the coffee but I ate the whipped cream off. I pushed the coffee to the side as a strange oiliness pooled on the top and a skin formed. Umm... ew. My husband ordered a pancake roll... it was a bad pancake wrapped around unseasoned scrambled eggs, an enormous amount of straight up sour cream, and unmelted orange cheddar cheese. It came with a plastic cup of whipped butter and table syrup that tasted like it came from a planet that doesn't even have maple trees on it. I got the breakfast bruschetta. It was fine. I mean it was horrible but it wasn't offensive. The home fries that came with it were insulting. They were greasy (again, unseasoned) shards of mealy potatoes. Another couple walked in as we got our food and I heard her say "I saw you guys on Instagram and had to come try it! I love the diner feel." It took everything in me not to grab her arm and tell her to run far far away but I realized that she had to learn her lesson just as I did. Bill was cheap, which was good. My cousin and I were visiting from NJ and this establishment happened to be within walking distance from our hotel. What a great experience! The staff was awesome and the food was plenty and delicious. I had the pancakes with scrambled eggs and sausage and my cousin had the French toast with some kind of topping ( I forget the name). Stacks looked promising, but it was a disappointing experience. We waited an hour for our meal, even though the place was nearly empty. It looked like they were short staffed. My son has allergies, and when I asked about one of the dishes the maitre d' came to our table and lectured me about careless parenting, as if we had never been to a restaurant before. As soon as we walked into this restaurant, I could sense something was off. The waiting area was extremely small and more packed than a clown car. There was no host stand so people checking in were competing with people checking out at the register as I guess the servers do not process the checks at the table. It was like a scene out of the Hunger Games to get our name on the list. When she called us, she used a number system we didn't even know existed because no one gave us a number. Now calling "number 3 for party of 4"...Bueller...Bueller? Maybe they're secretly training us for the DMV? After waiting only 10 or so minutes after being seated, our server finally took our drink order and disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle. By the time she returned with our drinks 15 minutes later, I almost forgot we were there for breakfast. The menu is massive but this is one of those places where if you want cheese in your omelet then you should be prepared to pay extra for it. The server gestures that the pancakes were going to the size of a 10-inch pizza, but they were nowhere close in reality. Disappointing, to say the least. My wife ordered the garden omelet and clearly asked for the veggies to be cooked well, but they came out as raw. It would not have been a been a big issue but the server never came back to check in on us so my wife simply ate her homefries, toast and stole one of my pancakes. When the check finally arrived we informed the server, she looked like a deer caught in headlights and told us to talk to the manager at the check-out rather than addressing it herself. I asked her to please get the manager so she could see that the omelet was full of raw onions. The manager acted incredulous and asked us why we had not complained sooner since my wife did not eat any of the omelete. I had to explain it's because the server never came back to our table. Side note: I even had to steal syrup from another table when ours ran out. The manager's solution? Offer us a discount. I mean, who wouldn't want a discount on a terrible meal they couldn't even eat? I insisted I was not paying for the omelet and pointed to the 13.50 to take off the receipt which clearly read "Veggies cooked well". If I could rate a zero out of 5 I would primarily for the mismanagement and poor attitudes of the clearly overworked and under appreciated staff. read more

Home fries look like potato chips I asked for eggs over easy yeah they were over hard. My wife loves blueberry pancakes they weren't cooked all the way. We unfortunately did not make it to be seated, so I will not comment on the quality of food as I did not experience it. It was mildly busy when I checked my party of 2 in and we were given the number 4 and a 15 minute wait. No problems there. 15 minutes went by, and our number had not been called - they were onto number 5. Assuming they might've missed us and would get back to our group, we waited a bit longer, to no avail. When there was a break at the counter (it wound up quite busy as the check in counter is also where you check out to pay), my husband went up to let them know he thought we had been skipped. They said "ok" and carried on, so we assumed when there was an open table for 2 we might be next, as they call in numerical order. Not the case - they continued on up to number 18 (another ~20 minutes later) before acknowledging us, to which we let them know we were no longer interested and left. We went to Otherside Diner instead and were in and out within an hour, and the food and service was great! It's too bad that the service at Stacks was lacking as we'd been excited to try it for quite a while and had heard good things about the food. Based on our experience today, though, we will not be back. Good communication goes a long way, and we did not find that here. read more
