Stacks is one of our go-to diners for breakfast/brunch. Their pancakes and french toast is pretty standard and reliable. My kids enjoy the things they get pretty much everywhere - pancakes, eggs, grilled cheese, chicken fingers, fries. Service is friendly and fairly quick. There are a couple things on the menu that I've been especially impressed with and they feel sort of hidden since pancakes are given such primacy on the menu and signage. The fried filet of sole is delicious. The fish is fresh, well seasoned, and perfectly cooked. Even my son loves it! The fried chicken is incredible - perhaps the best in the area. Perfectly cooked, tender, and juicy. The coating is flavorful and crunchy without eclipsing the meat. I have had it a couple times as the chicken and waffle combo and it does not disappoint. However, today it was served with honey drizzled all over and I did not like that. It made it too sweet and too messy. Syrup would have been better, and I'd rather have dressed it myself. So I'd order it without the honey. I feel like it wasn't served to me like that previously. Weird. There are some good omelets on the menu but they're three egg omelets. My tummy just isn't big enough for three eggs, I'm afraid. So I tend to avoid getting the omelets. read more

We ordered via their website for pickup. We received both a confirmation text and email, and my card was charged for the purchase. Since the pickup time was about 45 minutes, I drove around and killed time with my toddler. We arrived at Stacks right at the confirmed pickup time, and notified the woman at the counter that we were here for our order. She didn't have any record of it, immediately accused of us ordering through DoorDash and not their website, or at their Scarborough location and that I must have placed the order carelessly. I showed her the email confirmation, the text confirmation that were both time stamped showing when I placed the order, and the confirmed pickup time at their specific location with the address clearly listed. She still continued to accuse me of not ordering at their location. I then proceeded to show her my online banking clearly showing where I'd been charged. She then said "Oh, that charge will fall off in a few days because you didn't order correctly". But we did...Then she said their online system must not be working, and she fiddled with the iPad and all of a sudden I got a text saying "Your order has been picked up". No, she forced an entry into the system, and it's clear that either the system was malfunctioning or they weren't checking their OWN, website-based Stacks online order system & never sent it to the kitchen. She never once apologized, and all of her responses were immediately defensive and customer-blaming. She finally said, ok, yes I see your order now - give us 5-10 minutes. That was it, not apology. 25 minutes later (after already waiting 45 minutes) and trying to keep my autistic child calm (there's a reason we order ahead and rely on confirmed times) she beckoned us to the front and just said "All set, thank you" and put our order on the counter. Again, no apology or anything done to make it right, and clearly tried to blame us for their system error from their own website or their management error - either way, it was definitely not the customer's fault. The food is mid, and we won't be back. Things happen, mistakes happen, technology glitches...A little ownership or even just an apology, with the issue being on their end would have gone a long way. read more

Worst breakfast place I've been to. The food is a combination of burned beyond recognition and cold, like it was heated from frozen in a microwave that's not spinning so it doesn't cook evenly. My husband and I went there today for breakfast. We both ordered an omelette, mine was under cooked, runny, disgusting. Our coffees were so light tasting , they taste like water. The toast was good when we got it but had to ask two times to receive it. We told the waitress I would eat home fries and toast, I could not eat the omelette. The manager came over and apologized. Neither took the omelette off our bill. The place is freezing inside we sat with our coats on. We got home and my husband has been sick since we got home violently. We think it is food poison. There is a very cool cotton candy machine in the entrance that appears to whip spun sugar into shapes like hearts and stars, but it was not something any of us had an interest in at the time, so I was unable to watch it in action. Like most places, Stacks was understaffed and the servers were covering far more tables than usual. With that said, our server did an incredible job! First thing to point out is this is one of the last places you can get a full meal for two under $40. We each got a beverage and a full breakfast including a side and the total was $39 and some change. I got one of the pancake wraps, I believe country breakfast wrap. It was huge. The picture does not do it justice. Flavors were well balanced and the sausage they used was high quality. I do recommend getting syrup for it though, the pancake is very good but just a touch dry. My husband got a Benedict that was equally as huge. The hollandaise was very nice. He also got a side of grits which came in a full meal sized bowl. SOMEONE saw some edgy marketing on Instagram for this new place called stacks. "Where is it?" "On riverside st?" "Is that where the Egg and I was?" "I think so?" So someone had his mind set on trying this new place that was advertising amazing buttermilk pancakes. Confirmed, it is definitely the old Egg and I, but a little edgier. The moment you walk in you know it's a diner. They've got the cake showcase up front, mixed with updated modern cups and pipe shelving. The turquoise and black color combo brings both a retro but up to date feel. There's still booths and the crowd is the same as the old Egg and I, and I'm not sure the menu in reality is that much different. The emphasis on pancakes is heavier, with slightly more unique twists. We ordered a hot chocolate, a peanut butter chocolate stack, and a homemade challah French toast (with blueberry compote and vanilla 'sauce'). Here's the reality: 1. Hot chocolate. It's Swiss miss hot chocolate that came unmixed with a load of whipped cream. 2. Pb and Choco stack. Three giant pancakes with chocolate chips and peanut butter whipped into the batter. Dry, overpowering chocolate, and bland syrup. It was a passionless, lacking of fluff and too little pb pancake. The SO can eat a million pancakes and he could not finish it. 3. The challah French toast: probably was challah? But when it came out it was essentially slathered in icing and blueberry compote/ sauce. It was wayyyyy too much and wayyyyy too sweet. The French toast itself was not bad but I feel cheated that the extra stuff cost an extra 6$ (??) and I couldn't even eat it. The server was super friendly. All the staff were so nice and I definitely felt bad for saying that everything was good. It probably is if you come here with the right expectations. California Omelet - This was a 2 out of 5. The omelet was dry and the chunks of tomato and avocado seemed like it was cooked in a rush. I was pretty disappointed with the "home fries" - which were more like potato slices. It was ok but not was I was expecting. I ordered toasted raisin bread and it was so burnt, it was black. They also have a wide variety of espresso drinks, smoothies and fresh juice for those wanting to keep things on the lighter side. If you're looking to dig into a hearty breakfast, you may have a hard time deciding because the menu is extensive and there are so many yummy sounding options. We get seated and it takes 20 mins for our coffees to come to the table, and when they did, there was lipstick stains all over my friends cup. and then another 45 minutes for food. Still wishing we had half stars up in here, because this place is really a 2.5. Been to this spot twice and each time was well, okayyyyy? I say this because the first time I ordered chicken and waffles and the chicken came out frozen and uncooked in the center. I did not like this. They took the food back and recooked my order, but at this point it had taken so long to get the food and my partner has already finished, that I just took it to go. Waffles to go are never as good. The last visit we had was with our 10 year old for his birthday, because what 10 year old doesn't want insane piles of sugary pancakes for their birthday brunch? I was really excited to try this spot based on photos of and the menu. It was a busy Sunday late morning when we stopped in. The service was slow, but that's to be expected on a busy morning and our server was very friendly. I got a veggie omelette w/ home fries which was okay. The eggs were slightly overcooked and the potatoes weren't crisp, they were very kind of soft /soggy but the portion was huge. No way I could have eaten the entire thing. My daughter got the cheeseburger and she liked it... Not much feedback there. We were excited to try the desserts we had seen online and decided to get four pieces of pie and cake to go. Well, after the 45 min drive home we found they only put 2 PCs of pie in the bag. I called to have this removed from our bill. The woman I spoke with wanted me to drive back there and pick up the two pieces of pie that we didn't get however I wasn't driving another hour and a half for two pieces of pie. Upon arrival, we waited in line a few minutes before being greeted. Once we asked for a table of two, we were told it would be another 5 minutes. No biggie. The front of the house is very busy. One woman is doing the seating, cashing people out, answering the phones, handling takeout, and making the speciality expresso drinks. After being seated, we browsed the huge menu. Our waitress came quickly to take our drink order. We put in our food order shortly after. After about 20-25 mins, she visited the table to let us know the kitchen was backed up and asked if she could get us coffee or anything else while we waited. We had been watching a bunch of fancy expresso last being made at the front counter and decided to try the Carmelo. Our food arrived a minute later, actually before the expresso which was kind of odd given her comment. It looked better than it tasted. I think the proportions were off because it didn't taste as strong as an expresso should and there was no evidence of caramel. The food was similar- under seasoned. I got the Emperor's skillet (broccoli, mushroom, onion and potato with two eggs over easy and hollandaise sauce). The potatoes should have been crisped more. There didn't seem to even be any salt and pepper in the dish. If I had to guess, the veggies were previously frozen. The eggs were cooked over easy as I asked and the hollandaise was a nice texture, but everything was bland. As I mentioned before, the woman at the front cashes everyone out, but because she was seating someone, we had to wait again at the counter when ready to pay, even though there was another employee standing there. I think this place has a lot of potential but has some stuff to work out. 1) cut the menu some to a smaller selection and really nail everything on there and 2) delicate the load on the front of the house. read more

Ate there on 11/3 around 11am. We were seated in 10-15 minutes. Our waitress was warm and friendly and took our drink and food orders promptly. It took a long long time ( I'm guessing 45-60 minutes) to get our food and my husbands order was not correct ( scrambled eggs instead of poached eggs) they did take his plate back to the kitchen and apologized. He had the same hash browns and said they were good but not homemade. I had the turkey club sandwich which was good. Bread not as toasty as I expected.
