Easy to spot at Rising Tide
Bill D.

We had noticed the Ugly Duckling food truck parked at Rising Tide when we were doing errands in Bayside and decided that we'd stop there for lunch. I am SO glad we did! This is an amazing little spot! The menu, while not gigantic, is filled with quality choices. The specials added on a brisket sando, which was top-notch! My partner's burger was perfectly cooked and the tots were piping hot and crunchy. The people running the truck were patient with questions and put together our order quickly. The truck is parked near Rising Tide, so there are many, many picnic tables and lots of shady spots. We are already looking forward to the next time we'll go there!

The Ugly Duckling's homemade English Muffins sounded like the perfect light lunch we were seeking after checking in to our nearby hotel. I was really intrigued by the rye and caraway muffin, and I love a good pastrami. Unfortunately, the thin pastrami was a bit chewy. If there is a meat spectrum that ranges from jerky to moist and tender (such as Sam LaGrassa's), it was too close to jerky. With plenty of butter and melted cheese, it was pretty greasy, though the flavor was enjoyable. I was happy to try it, and my wife really enjoyed the complex Como Se Dice Buon Giorno, with prosciutto, hash brown, banana peppers, etc. Next time, I'd probably grab a package of their English Muffins to bring home and create my own egg sandwich, but it's a quaint neighborhood spot worth checking out if you're in the area.

Friendly and welcoming space, cool and relaxed vibes, music. Perfect place to dine, relax, work or socialize. The people are so friendly and warm, and attentive to service. If you're lucky you'll even spot the elusive jimmy who pops in and out of view every so often while he frantically cooks orders. Food was impressive - had the desayuno del sol and it was different and innovative way to present a chorizo and egg breakfast on a sandwich with a little bite and sharp saltiness of the chorizo. The buon giorno was light and hint of creaminess but so good. Nice music and relaxing vibe. Highly recommend!

Cute cute place. Small, quaint, in a cute neighborhood. I came here for the cream puff but ended up taking a whole lot of pastries! The cookies were stuffed with candies inside and were delightful. Perfect texture loved the treat inside. I also got a chocolate peanut butter cream puff which was bit and made in a choux pastry that was deliciously well done. I also indulged in a Trocadero of sour tarts candies and lemon cream filling. The pastry was light and the cream inside was so good - like a lemon custard. The service as also nice. It wasn't busy but they were quick to attend to me and get me a box of pastries together to go. I got smiles all around and a nice welcome and farewell. I would definitely go back to try the regular menu.

Our experience at Ugly Duckling was generally OK - the space is cute in a great neighborhood, fun menu with plenty of homemade goodies (including their delicious english muffins), and spot on with the flavors. However, the service was pretty rough and that definitely soured the whole experience for us. We came in around brunch time on the day after Halloween. The hostess invited us to seat ourselves at the bar. It took a while to get menus... then took a while to get water... then took even longer for someone to take our drink order. When they did, they were of what we tried to order - the menu that we were given was out of date. So we pivoted and ordered different drinks... which took a while to arrive. After we placed our food order, things took a lonnnnggg time to come out. It looked like they were jamming with to-go orders, so that much I can appreciate. But that 40+ minute ticket time can suck either way. And when we did finish our meal, it was like pulling teeth trying to get our check. The loaded breakfast tots and english muffin pizzas were very tasty. We took an oreo cream puff home to enjoy later and it was soooo good. So I really can't knock the food or drinks. But the servers/bartenders were totally checked out and it showed. It could have been an off day (hungover from Halloween maybe?) The menu was pretty torn up and dirty as well and had not been updated to the current offerings. I've heard such good things about Ugly Duckling so I'm hoping it gets some TLC to bring it back up to standard.

Our experience at Ugly Duckling was very interesting -- to say the least. Our immediate impression was that it had a unique vibe and was enticing from the jump. It was unclear whether we should shit ourselves or wait for a host to seat us. The service was friendly but slow. It really seemed like they were understaffed on that day. The food was tasty enough. My latte was absolutely delicious! Pro-tip: just seat yourself... we witnessed so many people just hovering around and getting "cut" in line because other guests would come in and just seat themselves immediately.

Service: waitresses were friendly and very helpful beings I made some add ons to my burger. Talkative and respectful, but slow to refill water. I found myself dying of thirst waiting on my refill even after asking once already. Ambiance/atmosphere: small, but well decorated and vibrant colors. Relaxed, but occasionally loud. Being loud isn't an issue as it is a quick grab and chill type of place. Food: my burger was good and with a pound of meat you can imagine how juicy it was too. English muffin bun was toasted nicely and held together very well even on the bottom. This was by no means a top 10 burger, but it hit the spot and wasn't disappointing in the slightest. My grandma got the sausage and egg breakfast sandwich, which was very enjoyable in her opinion and it looked to match as well. The sausage was flavorful and the cheese was well melted paring nicely with the egg. Perfectly toasted English muffin holding things together.

Amazing breakfast at Ugly Duckling while we were in town for a long weekend. I had the BLT on an English muffin and it was the absolute bomb, easily one of the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had. The service was fast, friendly, and a great neighborhood vibe. If you are in town and need a morning bite, this should be at the top of your list.

There's no reservations or wait list, it's a causal pop in (may have to take to go) kind of spot. Was pretty busy when we went so had to wait for seating, but the food was good and the coffee was too! It's a cute local little spot if you're in the area.

While on vacation we visited several times over the week. The English muffin sandwiches are amazing! They also have home made pastries that we wanted one of each- the cream puffs were my favorite. Thank you for the wonderful experience!!

The No. 2

Got there around 9am on Sunday. No line. Seated immediately at the bar. Food: Pastrami on Rye was excellent and the sauce made it a little messy. The No. 2 was solid and the ketchup made it a little messy as well. The lattes are good but lukewarm. Overall: Would definitely return!

Super cute duck theme and merch area.

This place has a bright, fun and eccentric atmosphere! I ordered a salted honey latte which was delicious and unique, and learned that they make all of their syrups in house which I liked too. A few people arrived while I was waiting, and were greeted by name with a warm welcome, so I'm sure these people were regulars. Throughout my entire time there, I felt awkward and out of place. Like these people knew I wasn't from around here. I guess everyone was nice enough, but I definitely felt like I was not given the friendly welcome that others were. Not sure I would come back, but if you haven't been and like fun, unique spots I would give it a try.

Como se dice Buon Giorno

All around excellent spot! Small space but well laid out. Service was great even though they got very busy right after we arrived. Husband tried a special that was a bbq turkey and coleslaw sandwich. I had the Como se dice buon giorno which was *chef's kiss* 10/10 a perfect breakfast sandwich top to bottom. A genius combination I've not seen elsewhere. It was clear every ingredient was great quality. This just might be my new go to breakfast spot! My husband also really enjoyed his specialty coffee drink too. We'll be happy to return!

Trocaderos with the flavors of peanut butter and jelly. What a delicious treat!

Banana cake- flavor combos you wouldn't expect to go together...but are phenomenal. The sesame seeds, olive oil, cream cheese and banana bread are so good together. Might even change how I make my banana bread! Sticky bun- HUGE and delicious. We saved it for the next day and it was still so soft and yummy. They have a few parking spots so if you are going with someone and can't find anything I would lowkey have them wait for a spot. The staff are really friendly but make sure you know what you want. We got the Biscuit Sandwich, this is heated up but they give it to you right away. There was nothing special about this it tasted basic maybe even a little salty. Now my favorite was definitely the Loaded Biscuit. This was a perfect savory sweet combo but I do wish the biscuit itself was a little softer. The Sticky Bun was good, I'm not a huge sweets fan so this wasn't anything special for me. We also got the Blueberry Pie and this was unexpectedly good. I wasn't expecting much but the cold blueberry really hit the spot. The crust was amazing and it made me appreciate a good pie. For drinks we got a Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte, it was pretty small for $6 I would say and didn't have any strong flavor. Overall, worth a try because it does have some more interesting bakery breakfast items but I definitely wouldn't wait in that line again.

There is a silver lining though, they will still be operating their Forest Ave pickup location and you'll still find their pastries at many other local establishments. To ensure we did not miss out on anything we arrived right at opening. A line already formed but once we located parking we jumped in. Despite the small space the three workers had such a great system going for keeping the line moving! Despite the line of everyone getting their Belleville fix they had everything in stock and about 9 different pastry options. Since it was our first visit we wanted to get a variety of pastries to try a few. Seeing so much positive talk about their croissants we needed a classic version of that, a Pain au Chocolat, Morning Bun, and lastly a Palmier (they describe it as a caramelized puff pastry cookie). Drink wise my wife got an iced lavender latte and I got an iced chai latte. Drinks were good and all the pastries were phenomenal. My wife has found a new favorite pastry with the palmier. The cardamom bun was delicious - it was light, slightly sweet, the cardamom flavor was not overpowering and the brioche was perfectly moist. Coffee was also great - simply a drip coffee but they are using a medium-dark roast from tandem coffee roasters that will be a general crowd pleaser. Just be aware they don't have all of the pastry options every day, I went looking for a kouign amann but the cardamom bun I had didn't disappoint, so next time I'm here I'll have to catch 'em.
