Swung into this Belleville location for the first time this morning to try it before they close. If you hadn't seen they will be closing tomorrow, Monday June 8th. There is a silver lining though, they will still be operating their Forest Ave pickup location and you'll still find their pastries at many other local establishments. To ensure we did not miss out on anything we arrived right at opening. A line already formed but once we located parking we jumped in. Despite the small space the three workers had such a great system going for keeping the line moving! Despite the line of everyone getting their Belleville fix they had everything in stock and about 9 different pastry options. Since it was our first visit we wanted to get a variety of pastries to try a few. Seeing so much positive talk about their croissants we needed a classic version of that, a Pain au Chocolat, Morning Bun, and lastly a Palmier (they describe it as a caramelized puff pastry cookie). Drink wise my wife got an iced lavender latte and I got an iced chai latte. Drinks were good and all the pastries were phenomenal. My wife has found a new favorite pastry with the palmier. Sad to have this great bakery shutting its doors but I will be seeking out their baked goods at the other location! read more

Modest little cafe packing a lot of flavor - had the pleasure of eating a cardamom bun along with a nice cup of coffee while I looked out to the rainy street from their high top seating along the windows. The cardamom bun was delicious - it was light, slightly sweet, the cardamom flavor was not overpowering and the brioche was perfectly moist. If you enjoy that flavor profile, don't hesitate to grab one of these! Coffee was also great - simply a drip coffee but they are using a medium-dark roast from tandem coffee roasters that will be a general crowd pleaser. Just be aware they don't have all of the pastry options every day, I went looking for a kouign amann but the cardamom bun I had didn't disappoint, so next time I'm here I'll have to catch 'em. read more

This small, sunny space on Munjoy Hill can have a line out the door on a busy Saturday morning, but don't let that deter you! We're lucky to have many amazing bakery options here in Portland, but if you want the absolute best croissants, this is where you need to be. These are the real buttery flaky French deal. I love that they make sandwiches with them too (with things like ham and arugula). Snag one of the stools on a sunny window if there's one available and enjoy your coffee there (perfect cappuccino ratios, btw)--today for me it was a cardamom bun, also delicious. This was our last stop on our last day in Portland. What a phenomenal bakery. Everything fresh. Everything delicious. The ham and cheese croissant with Dijon was bomb. The cardamon bun? Yes, also bomb! I can't remember the name of what my girl got, but it was a spin on an everything bagel w cream cheese. If you said bomb, you guessed right. The only minor complaint would be the coffee was not hot. Both of ours. They were just above room temp. But listen. The display case here seems like it can do no wrong. I got a plain and an almond croissant to go. The plain one got eaten on the ride and it was great. I can almost guarantee the almond croissant will be delicious, even the next day. One of my favorite pastry items ever, is the flaky and oh-so-savory ham, cheese & dijon croissant from Belleville. It's a decadent treat for myself. I absolutely LOVED the pizza from their early days, but haven't had a slice in the past few years. Belleville truly hits its stride with the pastry items, from cookies to their citrus bun. Every now and then they do specialty-seasonal or holiday forward item (like their upcoming Valentine's day cake!) that are always a hit. The coffee/tea leaves something to be desired. I love to swing by in person during the week (you won't catch me there in the summer on the weekends since the line is out the door). read more

This was a small little spot which we stopped into in the morning. The space was small a pretty nice. The service was also good with the employees being very friendly. The selection of pastries and sandwiches was limited but we went at 10:00am which could've been the problem The pastry we got had cream in the middle of two soft buns. We found it to be very delicious and not overly sweet. The sandwich was also very good with the bread being the star. But the coffee and chai latte were disappointing. They weren't very flavorful and very watery. Overall the pastries and sandwiches are must but the coffees and lattes didn't seem to hit the mark. And there just really wasn't much to choose from. I came here at approximately 11AM on a Saturday. And man were the coffers empty!! Really unfortunate that they sell out of stuff so fast - but a testament to how good their food is. Portland is bakery rich but pastry poor. And I mean bakeries that make viennoiseries, not muffins and cookies bigger than your face (no offense to those who love little Debbie's style baked goods). Til this year, the only place in the area where I could find *pastries*, the buttery, flaky bites of heaven, was really only Standard Baking that lived up to those expectations. You can get a croissant or a pain au chocolate anywhere, but anything more you can fugedaboutit. Then in my searches for pastry glory I found Belleville...right after the pandemic hit. I don't follow them on social so had no idea about all their pop up events, but finally I've gone. This year the pastry gods struck southern Maine hard and has blessed us with many options, but of them all, I think that Belleville has won the gold for me. Their Kouign Amann is tiny but mighty. Their croissants come in plain, almond, and hazelnut - all perfection. They call their pain au chocolats, "pain au chocolat" (I have no idea where "chocolate croissant" came from, it's not even a croissant shape, but I guess "bread made of chocolate" doesn't sound that great!) Their cardamom bun is epic glory in all it's bun-ness and cardamom-ness. In fact, this is what really keeps me coming back. They have a pastry limit which while my eyes exceed, my order doesn't. The only thing keeping me from gaining weight is the fact that they only open a few days a week. Whew. I have yet to try their pizza but that will be coming very soon. I can finally bid my failed searches goodbye when the pastry need hits me. So long, farewell, I eat pastries. No more Whole Foods disappointment anymore!! read more

Only taking off one star because the prices of the pastries are a liiiiiiitle bit high, but not horribly unreasonable. It does seem like they sell out pretty quick so if you want specific items you have to show up early or order the day before. Great neighborhood patisserie. I don't know if you can go wrong with anything that they offer. The pastries are excellent. The pizza is also not to be missed. The pizza comes out later in the day. The place is usually packed on the weekends so if you show up without having ordered ahead, you'll have to wait in line. I have never waited in line but it seems to move pretty quickly. The pro tip is to order ahead online. Easy in and out. The only disadvantage is that they do "special" items that aren't available to order ahead. But I am fine with everything that's offered for online order. The space inside is a bit cramped but it's set up well and it has a lot of natural light. I can confidently say I have never had a better pastry in my life. You absolutely NEED to get the Kouign Amann (pronounced Queen Amahn) - it's a croissant with caramelized sugar in the middle, and it kind of creates a custard. After the first bite I immediately wished I had bought a second one because I didn't want to share it with my partner! The insides are buttery, flaky, layered - all the words you want to hear in a croissant. As an added bonus, Belleville has coffee and espresso-based drinks which pair perfectly with all the tasty treats you are bound to pick up while you're in here! They're only open Friday through Sunday right now, and I'd suggest getting there early to make sure you have your choice of all the pastries they offer! They go quick! read more

I love a croissant. So much. My love for croissants is as infinite as their many buttery flakey layers. So when I first saw this place on the gram, I knew I had to give it a try. Today we got the egg and cheese, croque monsieur (basically instead of break they made croissant bread. I know...), a chocolate almond, and a cinnamon bun (also a croissant). Everything was amazing! I will saw they were a little on the brown side, a little more cooked than I would like, but they tasted great. I particularly loved my egg and cheese croissant because the egg was some how not well done so the yolk still had a nice gooey texture like that of a perfect 6 minute egg. Wowza this place is amazing! I'd been stalking them on Instagram for awhile and finally made it up after the gym a few weekends ago...I'm already plotting my return! I'm obsessed with pastries and am always seeking out the best laminated options in any city. These are hands down the best in Portland and maybe even Maine.....actually I don't think I've found any better in all of New England. (AJ King in Salem, MA is close!) They've mastered the dough and serve it up in a number of ways. I tried the classic croissant, blueberry crostata, cinnamon bun and egg and cheese croissant (I tried to stop ordering but couldn't...) All of the above were amazing it's hard to even pick a favorite (so I won't). You won't be disappointed with anything you pick. Based on my extremely limited social media accounts, the word is OUT about Belleville! And well it should be. In a town that keeps raising the pastry/baked good bar. Belleville came in on what was already a strong game and is kicking some serious croissant ass! Stopped in for the first time last weekend near closing time and bought what they had left, 2 plain croissants and 2 brioche buns. One might think this could prove to be lackluster or uninteresting options. WRONG!!! The croissants were so good, so expertly constructed, that we ended up taking small bites and then analyzing why each bite was so exceptional. Well, this is it. This is my favorite bakery anywhere. They have perfected the art of the laminated dough. When you walk in, you're enticed by all the delicate pastries as well as the rustic-looking breads. Luckily I came on a bit of a rainy day so there crowds were lighter and I didn't have to wait in line. It was really tough making my choice as everything looked delicious. This place makes the most delicious croissants, danishes, and morning buns. I went with the pear pistachio danish since the fruit on top looked so fresh. I was not disappointed. It was AMAZING. The pastry portion was so crispy and flaky and perfect. The custard part of the danish was smooth and creamy. The pear was rice and the perfect accompaniment to the custard. Altogether, it was the perfect pastry. The pastries here are so delicate and made with such finesse. I can honestly say I don't think I've had a pastry this good even in Paris. read more

Belleville is a tiny walk up bakery in Portland, Maine that also sells pizza. It seems an unlikely place to find the best croissant in Maine, but find it we did. Nice brisance, beautiful texture, good flavor profile, just a bit light on the flour to butter ratio. Overall a 6.2 on my 1-10 likert-type croissant scale, the highest rating I've given to date. The chocolate croissant, more properly referred to as pain au chocolat, were even better. I don't have a scale for pain au chocolat, but if I did, they might be in the high sevens. For a while, every time I came to Belleville they were sold out of pastries. Didn't matter when I came. I've left empty handed here more times than I can count. Locals and folks from away are loving what Belleville is doing, and well they should be: it's a sleek spot, extremely minimalist in decor (which allows the customer's focus to be entirely on what they're about: pastries and pizza which sit along their granite countertop - the first thing you see when you walk in), with huge floor to ceiling windows that pour light in. The staff is friendly, outgoing, and engaging. I have only ever had a pleasant experience here (even when I'm told they're out for the day, they do it in such a nice way)! The pastries themselves are darker baked (I think this is the traditional French style) making the first few layers rather crispy and the rest very tender (heads-up if you're not used to this), the croissants are the picture of laminated perfection, and the size is just right to feel indulgent. For me, though, the chocolate croissant wasn't all that chooclatey and the almond croissant wasn't all that almondy (having lived in Europe I was expecting just a little something more from these, y'know?) - so this wouldn't necessarily be my first choice in town. The pain au raisin is also good, but the darker bake makes the raisins a bit hard. The egg and cheese croissant is an absolute thing of beauty and unlike anything I've ever had anywhere else - there's not much cheese, but how they get the yolk to sit there all innocent like and then explode in a gooey mess when you take a bite is fantastic. I would gladly eat one of these every day if possible (and it's not, because as I mentioned earlier, they sell out fast). It's all a matter of preference, and for me I certainly wouldn't say no to a Belleville pastry if someone bought me one! read more

Anyone that knows me can appreciate my love of pastry, especially a classic French pastry and when you add croissant into the mix the expectations and standards are elevated. This past Thursday / Friday we visited Portland for the very first time. The hotel was fine, local meals ok, however the true highlight that justified the 5 hour drive (normally 3.5 however there were 2 accidents and 1 detour)was Belleville. I am still talking about the Cinnamon Roll and Croissants (Classic and Almond). This baker knows what they are doing! We ate no less than 5 different items and each was perfectly baked, with the correct color and texture (not undercooked like so many people seem to enjoy, lord knows why) and when I got to the Cinnamon Roll I had forgotten about the horrific drive up from CT, the less then stellar hotel and mediocre meal, it was sublime, sheer perfection! If there is any justification to return to Portland, there is only one and that would be Belleville. read more
