My wife and I are attempting to check out any and all coffee places we can and Smalls was our stop today on an early Spring Sunday morning. They advertise themselves as all day cafe/bar and market. The vibes were perfect with an overall cozy and welcoming feel. It seemed like a spot many regulars come to often as the workers appeared to know many people who came through! They have a bar with roughly 8 seats, along with some tables. With the back of the store having goodies to buy including candles, self-care items, wines, drinks, and more. Worth browsing before or after your drinks and food. We snagged two bar stools and were immediately greeted and served water along with a menu. All three staff members were friendly and made us feel welcome. Drink wise my wife got an iced mocha while I saw their drink special of the month on social media and had to try it. Named The Blue Rose with Butterfly pea flower, cardamom rose, whole milk, pebble ice and espresso on top. A photo-worthy beverage with a delicious flavor. I would keep coming back for this drink for sure if it were a permanent menu item! Food wise my wife and I both got a breakfast sandwich, only difference she got bacon while I got the impossible sausage. Well made and delicious sandwiches that would make us return as well. I do wish they would have been a little bigger though. If our visit today was any indication of the typical my wife and I would gladly return! 100% recommend! I was in town and wanted some breakfast and this place did not disappoint. It was creative, colorful, the people working were happy to be there. It made me want to work there. I sat at the bar. It's a narrow building, seating is friendly. I had a cortado and a toast with beans and eggs, it was divine. I want to 100 go back to try all the other menu items. Such a gem tucked away in a quieter part of portland. Amazing selection of food and fun sweet treats. I went when they have their specialty cake available on Fridays and Saturdays. I showed up around 22 and sat right at the bar and chatted with the lovely bartender about what wine they recommend pairing with the caramel apple cake they had on special. Such lovely service and i had such a fun relaxing time just having a glass of wine with a slice of cake and reading my book! then walked around the little store area they had and will definitely need to go back for some fun and quirky gifts to pick up for the holidays. highly recommend! read more

Located just across the street from the water, it offers a cozy, colorful café up front and a charming little market tucked in the back, stocked with household goods and gourmet bites perfect for gifting, charcuterie boards, or spontaneous picnics. I always enjoy wandering through the back while waiting for my order, there's always something new to discover. Since my first visit, I've been loyal to the Smalls breakfast sandwich, it's seriously that good. The herb feta sauce is unforgettable (I've seriously wished they sold it by the jar). This place was SO CUTE! Cozy window seats, cute bar, and the shop in the back had so many goodies! I ordered the breakfast sandwich and it was bomb. Soft egg brick, crunchy bacon, and the sauce balanced really well! My only complaint is it felt like a small sandwich for $9 ($11 if you add bacon). My friend had the ricotta toast and enjoyed that and her coffee too! I would definitely come back to try some other dishes and cocktails! read more

This is a really cute little spot in Portland. It's a hip little grocery store in the back and in the front is a charming cafe that satiates well. I was not the biggest fan of the cheese in this particular image but loved the bread and would be more than willing to try again. When I needed help to send the card to a recipient with a firewall, I was advised to send it via email again, but at this point the page no longer exists. If I lived specifically within walking distance of Smalls, I can see making this a regular spot! The food and drinks are delicious; it's the perfect anytime-of-day sip and snack spot! The front part (the cafe) is so aesthetically pleasing and welcoming. There's seating at the counter, bar seating with a long mirror behind that, a table in one corner, and bench seating at the window in the other corner. The back has an (overwhelming) amount of artisan crafts, home goods, self care stuff, etc. for purchase as well. The first time I went I tried: 1. the breakfast sandwich (silky egg, garlic and herb feta, tomato mayo, arugula) for $9 (a dollar more than when they first opened). It was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. Probably in my top five favorite in Portland! The egg is square and has a nice crust on the outside of the patty, but it's soft and fluffy on the interior. The many different flavors and textures compliment each other, and it's such a unique offering compared to other breakfast sandwiches in the area! 2. the spinach and artichoke vegan sandwich (white beans, kalamata olives, red onion, peppadew cream cheese) for $13. It was okay, but strangely very, very sour. There was also no kalamata olives or red onion on mine, but lots and lots of artichokes and arugula. 3. an iced coffee for $4? $5?. Unfortunately, it was mostly ice. While I enjoyed myself tremendously, Smalls missed the mark for me on a few things: a. the music was so loud that I could barely hear the person I was with. b. some of the staff came off as harried and impatient; some of the staff seemed friendly and engaging. c. the breakfast sandwich is A LOT smaller than you might think (mine was the size of maybe an orange; it was satisfying, but not filling). d. the iced coffees are shockingly small, the smallest I've had anywhere else in Portland (again, satisfying, but I did buy another coffee elsewhere afterwards). I was torn between a Yelp 3 (which means "Okay") and a Yelp 4 (which means "Good") [...again, we really need half stars], but for me it came down to: would I visit again? And, sure, I can see myself coming back for a meeting or a WFM day! read more

Smalls is a lovely little cafe. I love that they're tucked away in the west end so parking is easy if you don't live in the area and there's a nice park to walk around if you wanna get out. Smalls is a half cafe half store type setup and they have a compact drink menu and a small food menu. I've never eaten here but it's such a nice place to grab a drink with a friend. The folks are super friendly and quick to whip your drink up. With such a small interior, they do manage to fit lots of bodies with bar style seating and cute window corner nooks. read more

I have been here a few times, either solo or in a pair. Atmosphere: This place is your classic neighborhood corner cafe. Casual, "locals" aesthetic, cutesy store in the back with home goods, small decor, and cards. I could 100% see myself coming by for mid-day snacks or coffee if I lived around here! Food/Drink: They have great sandwiches and espresso options and offer a slightly bigger menu for afternoon/evening, including $1 oysters every afternoon! A great place to sit at the bar with a glass of wine or a cocktail while enjoying some finger foods. Would not recommend trying to eat a full, hearty meal here. Service: Very friendly locals. Can watch them prepare the food and drinks. Parking: There is some street parking in the area, including a street nearby the Harbor View Memorial Park where there is 2 hour free parking. Reeeeally wish I lived closer to simply walk over. I would strongly recommend stopping this low-key neighborhood shop for a snack and beverage - day or night! I will certainly be back. read more

Saturday morning, a solid crowd of people placing orders for breakfast. Thankfully, almost all of them were taking the items to go, so we grabbed some stools up front at the counter. Wasn't hungry at all after late night choices the day prior. Settled instead on a slice of Focaccia bread ($4) and an Iced Coffee ($4ish). Bread is fresh and served with a little bit of oil. Coffee is okay, mostly ice so had to pace it with the bread They have an interesting home goods section in the back. Anything from over cream to shampoo; can be expensive. Smalls feels fresh out of NYC--almost as if it happened to fall out of the sky and into the West End of Portland. Their operation is very 'business in the front, party in the back', given that they serve up drinks and food near the entrance; wander to the back and you'll find a small market filled with charcuterie-makings amongst other fun and kitschy tchotchkes. I love their gem caesar salad (croutons, jammy egg, anchovy/shallot dressing) and their burrata plate. Much like their menu, the inside is small, so don't count on grabbing a sit-down spot, and plan on a takeout order (perfect to enjoy at a nearby park). A must in Portland! read more

Finally got myself over to Smalls today around 11:30. Yes, there was a bit of a line and yes, this is a small place, but the minute we walked in a table opened up, which I figured was a good sign. We waited awhile at the counter to order, but the 3-4 servers were super friendly and welcoming. We ordered an iced chai, a drip coffee, an open face toast topped with whipped ricotta, orange rind, pear, hazelnuts and honey, AND a small plat of burrata, red pepper jelly, proscuitto and greens. Honestly, the coffee was smooth and excellent and the food was very very good and worth checking out. Kind of pricey, but this is true no matter where I end up lately! read more

I'm so happy we have another cafe to go to on the West End. The cafe is located across the street from the old LB Kitchen west location (RIP). We checked out Smalls this weekend and it did not disappoint. I got a pretty matcha latte ($5) and a breakfast sandwich ($8, +$2 w/ bacon). Both were delicious! The matcha latte was served in an all glass cup and saucer - making it a perfect snapshot for the 'gram. The sando was one of the best bfast sandwiches Portland has to offer. The silky fluffy egg, the crunchy thick bacon, and the soft and yet simultaneously crunchy roll made it *chef's kiss*! This place is so delightful and unique! It's a hole in the wall coffee shop on the outside, but inside you'll find a surprisingly sophisticated coffee and food menu. In the back of Smalls is a colorful little market with unique housewares, teas, and adorable gift ideas. The counter and shop have a retro vibe. Definitely not your average coffee shop! A couple of friends swung through town on their way up to the Midcoast and we wanted to grab a quick, light bite--and unfortunately it was a Tuesday and what I call the Awkward Hour, 3:30-ish, when the majority of coffee shops have closed and other restaurants are having their day off too. We wanted a light bite and nothing touristy, and then I remembered Smalls, which I'd driven by multiple times. We're so glad we stopped in! No awkward hour here: there's a small menu of snacks and salads and sandwiches, which was perfect. Two of us had the spinach and artichoke sandwich, which came with a zingy white bean spread, olives and red onions, and peppadew cream cheese (hence the zing). The other person in the party had a delicious tartine with ricotta, berries, pistachios, and a nice little drizzle of honey. We were lucky and snagged the choice table right in the window. What I like about this place is the all-day café notion--common in European cities and sadly so much less so here in the states. They're open 7 days from 8 in the morning until 8 at night, and you can have coffee drinks or wine or cocktails, which I love! Delighted to have found a place I'll definitely be putting into my regular rotation. read more
