If you need a coffee + sweet treat stop, let this be the place. The $9 price tag on a biscuit w/ jam and butter gave me a bit of shock, but they've loaded that bread up so much it's worth it. The other biscuits are great, give at least one a try (a cheddar scallion? a loaded goat cheese and tomato compote?). Please bring your sweet tooth for the blueberry pie (not too sweet, don't worry) as it's the best on the menu. I bought a drip coffee after splurging on carbs, and it was a good accompaniment. This is a popular place so you might expect a line, but the workers are efficient. Have your order ready before you hit the counter and you'll be swell. They have indoor and outdoor seating, including a covered spot outdoor. Parking is free on street, but it's a residential area so it might be tight.

Tandem Bakery + Coffee is up there as the best bakery I've ever been to. From the great seating outside, to the friendly faces who are proud to give recommendations for all their incredible food, to the food itself. Wow, this place was incredible and deserving a 5 out of five stars. You really can't go wrong with anything you get, but I would say the highlight was the cheddar biscuit along with the Earl Grey and blueberry scone. The food scene at Portland was so fun. Give this place a try!

We had to try Tandem biscuits on our Portland visit and so glad we did! Biscuit egg sandwich was flavorful! Biscuit with butter and jam was amazing! Biscuit was so light and crumbly, absolutely delicious! Drip coffee and cappucino were nice and strong without being bitter or sour. Service was friendly and fast! Go try it, it's well worth the wait in long line!

We stopped here on a Thursday morning due to all the great reviews. When we arrived, it was very busy and there was a long line out the door. The line ended up moving fairly quickly. We ended up ordering the breakfast sandwich with sausage, the loaded biscuit, and a mocha and caramel latte. To start, the food was AMAZING! The breakfast sandwich was probably the best I've ever had. The biscuit was soft and warm and had sea salt on top. The cheese, egg and sausage were all cooked perfectly and everything paired together nicely. It was sweet and savory at the same time. The loaded biscuit(butter and strawberry jam) was also delicious, however, the amount of butter in it was a little dramatic. Both the drinks were good but the caramel latte was better! A must stop when searching for breakfast!

This place was great! We ate everything so quickly that I forgot to take photos of the food. We enjoyed delicious coffee drinks plus a breakfast sandwich with sausage, a sticky bun, raspberry scone, and a chocolate chip cookie. Get there early. We were in line about 15 minutes before they opened on a Friday morning in August and there were already a dozen or so people ahead of us. The line grew and continued for the next hour or so. They do a very smart thing by having a separate line and entrance for orders placed online.

Stopped by tandem on Monday morning and it lived up to the hype. The employees are all so nice and welcoming. I ordered a few of their pastries to try something sweet, savory and different. The buttermilk biscuit was crispy on the outside and super buttery and soft on the inside. The black sesame banana bread was unique, moist and very tasty. The cookie I ate the next day and it still had a perfect crispness to it and the ginger with molasses was such a great combination. I got a simple latte but their espresso was bold, smooth and rich. Highly recommend stopping by here. The line moves quickly!

Sausage egg and cheese

Nowhere near worth the line on the weekends. Jalapeño cheddar biscuit was the best thing I had. Sausage egg and cheese sandwich I didn't finish - the egg was not good at all and the sandwich fell apart. Plus it was one of the saltiest things I've eaten in a long time (negative). Iced black coffee was to be expected.

#47 in my NEW ENGLAND & NY COFFEE SHOP SERIES The pastries here are too die for! I believe their famous for their biscuits (which are delicious) but what surprised me was their black sesame banana bread, so good! Very soft and moist. Their coffees are also delicious. They have a large variety of pastries and common cafe drinks. My partner got their mocha and I got a vanilla iced latte. Both drinks were good, nothing that makes them too exceptional, but classic drinks done right. There is a small inside area to sit in and a large outside seating area. Parking lot available.

Wow! I got the biscuit with strawberry jam and butter along with a vanilla iced latte. I'm from the south so my expectations for a biscuit are pretty high, but this one hit the mark! The flaky salt on top and the jam really made it just right. I did leave wanting a little less butter and a little more jam, but overall it was delicious. We got there around 9am on a Friday and the wait wasn't too bad, maybe 15 minutes. However, it was raining so that might have deterred some folks. My only complaint is that I wish there was more covered seating since it was raining, but overall a great experience. The staff was super nice and helpful at the counter.

Damn their biscuits are good! Tandem has become a staple for us when visiting Portland, and it's best to get there first thing in the morning because the line can get pretty long; the line moves quick though because they have a good system for filling orders. Lots of space to sit and eat, but most of the seating is outside so beware if you're visiting in the winter. Here's what we got on our latest visit: - breakfast biscuit sandwich - goat cheese and tomato jam biscuit - black sesame banana bread - rhubarb scone - ginger molasses cookie - sweet roll Pastries rotate but certain things are regularly available, like the breakfast sandwich, molasses cookie, and sweet roll. The scone flavors appear to change along with the breads and jam for the biscuit. You really can't go wrong with anything.

Butter and jam biscuit - not warmed

Because we're only here for a short time, my friends and I decided to see what the hype was for this place. I don't think it was worth the hype. The jam and butter biscuit was cold so the butter wasn't melted. The biscuit was on the sweeter side with salt on top which was a bit odd for me. Lattes were normal, not special. This is somewhere you would visit just to try, but I wouldn't come back. I gave them 3 stars due to taste, long line, and price.

I had read about Tandem and their biscuits, best in town! So I knew i wanted to try them, but secretly I'm not really a biscuits kinda girl! I grew up in the south, I've had all kinds of biscuits and usually they are dry or crumbly and I usually end up saying, "eh, not worth the calories" Walking up there a line out the door, but it moved quickly, I was surprised that most things were already made and they just put it on a tray for you and you pay, very lunch line, and its not served hot!?! I immediately wished I had asked them to heat it up for me, but oh well were sitting already and they were busy! All my fears melted away when I tasted those delicious carbs! First impression the jalapeño cheddar reminded me of cheese straws, like great cheesy flavor, but the consistency was so good! Crispy edges but soft inside! But then, it gets better... one bite of that strawberry butter one, yep it's delicious moved right up the list, best biscuit I've ever had! The butter seems ridiculous like so much but it's so good, I swear seems like it's whipped with cream cheese or something cause what!? I found myself wishful for more strawberry preserves, but just so good, even took half home and ate it the next day, guess what still delicious!

My favorite bite during a quick stopover in Portland! Absolutely loved their savory loaded biscuit, with tomato jam and a goat cheese spread. We asked for the cheddar jalapeño biscuit instead of plain, which worked out perfectly. Instead of one of the pre-loaded biscuits, we got the jam and cheese on the side to self spread on our bits of biscuit. Really fabulous! Also loved the sweet sticky bun. A little savory and a little sweet, shared. Iced coffee. Ideal! (I did not try their malt coffee, but it looked like that was very popular.) Next time I'm in Portland, I will absolutely go out of my way to make it back to Tandem! Long line out the door on a Sat morning, but it moved very quickly!

Ask the Community - Tandem Coffee + Bakery

Is there Parking nearby?

Your best option for parking nearby would be getting a street parking space. Street parking will require payment Monday-Saturday from 9am-7pm.

Do they have gluten free options?

Browsing through reviews and their website they do not create any items with the intention of being gluten-free. One review mentioned the only option being yogurt. You would likely be better off trying another spot that serves gluten-free options.

Does the Anderson street location have the loaded biscuits on the menu?

There is a silver lining though, they will still be operating their Forest Ave pickup location and you'll still find their pastries at many other local establishments. To ensure we did not miss out on anything we arrived right at opening. A line already formed but once we located parking we jumped in. Despite the small space the three workers had such a great system going for keeping the line moving! Despite the line of everyone getting their Belleville fix they had everything in stock and about 9 different pastry options. Since it was our first visit we wanted to get a variety of pastries to try a few. Seeing so much positive talk about their croissants we needed a classic version of that, a Pain au Chocolat, Morning Bun, and lastly a Palmier (they describe it as a caramelized puff pastry cookie). Drink wise my wife got an iced lavender latte and I got an iced chai latte. Drinks were good and all the pastries were phenomenal. My wife has found a new favorite pastry with the palmier. Sad to have this great bakery shutting its doors but I will be seeking out their baked goods at the other location!

The cardamom bun was delicious - it was light, slightly sweet, the cardamom flavor was not overpowering and the brioche was perfectly moist. If you enjoy that flavor profile, don't hesitate to grab one of these! Coffee was also great - simply a drip coffee but they are using a medium-dark roast from tandem coffee roasters that will be a general crowd pleaser. Just be aware they don't have all of the pastry options every day, I went looking for a kouign amann but the cardamom bun I had didn't disappoint, so next time I'm here I'll have to catch 'em.

Two bagels plus two cream cheeses came out to around $8--great quality and value. Beyond bagels, they've got sweet pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and a bunch of local Maine goodies.
