I was told by friends to sit inside because during the summer (like all places in Brooklyn) there is a bit of a rat problem outdoors. So we sat inside - it's small but comfy. It feels like your everyday bar. I like the idea that it's an "anti-steakhouse steakhouse" in the sense that it's super casual but still has great steak. Walking in, you'd think this place is more of a sports bar - the interior totally gives off that vibe. But don't let that fool you, because the food is absolutely delicious. First off, I would like to say the food was delicious and our server was wonderful. The poor review is due to an interaction with the hostess. We had asked for seating outside on the patio because we had a licensed service dog with us. When we arrived, the hostess questioned us about what task the dog performs, which legally they are not allowed to inquire about. The person in our party who has the service dog then felt they had to disclose their personal medical information, which no one should have to do. We got the ribeye 50oz medium and it was delicious. They didn't let us know when we sat down but if you order one, it takes about an hour to cook so factor that in! The mashed potatoes were delicious but definitely a small dish to share. We had 4 people and it was not enough for us. The spinach gratin was also yummy and had a little kick to it! Overall a good experience, just the one mishap with coming in with a service animal. At two visits (first with my friend) we tried the hanger steak the NY strip and both were UNDERWHELMING , just whatever you can get in Costco and grill at home . The large prawn was ok. The lamb chop was pure fraud .... You order 25oz and you get maybe 10oz of actual meat .... Rest are fat and bone . The meat ? Too salty and just fair . Great mash potatoes and flat bread - THE HIGHLIGHT!!!! But what's mostly annoying is the misleading information regarding their ribeye steak (supposedly their IT item...) On their website they will mention $4.5 per oz (so you can assume it's up to you to decide the right cut) But at their restaurant menu oooppps .... it has to be a cut of between 50-70oz (depends on the day) nothing less and that's what you can get , in the visit it was 62oz , you can't make a reasonable tasteful ribeye at that size . I went in on a Sunday evening and was sat at the bar right away. Bartender was very nice and knowledgeable on the menu items. I ordered a Caesar salad and the Denver steak. The salad was HUGE which I didn't expect, but good. The steak was exactly how the bartender described it - decently fatty and not as tender - so I blame myself for ordering it. I also got a side of their mushrooms which are TO DIE FOR. The bartender also had nice suggestions for wine pairings with my meal. I ended with the sticky toffee pudding and it was amazing. Have been here many times before they closed and reopened and have generally always had pleasant experiences, but today we went for brunch and I'm not sure if we'll be back. The service was incredibly underwhelming and we waited nearly 35-40 minutes for our food. Ordered the steak and eggs, and the plate came with eggs that were overcooked and steak that was cold. Unfortunately no one checked in with us after we received our food so we couldn't even ask for it to be sorted out. There were only about 4-5 other tables seated in the restaurant and plenty of cooks and servers during service, so I'm not sure why the experience was so bad today. I came to visit St. Anselm because I saw a Instagram reel saying that this place is better than Peter Lugers. This ended up being a lie. I came with 5 other people and we asked the waiter if two steaks are sufficient and he said yes. Considering the steak is 42 oz., I believed him. The meat was standard, nothing to be excited about. We asked how big are the side dishes and the waiter said it's big enough for 2-3 people. Imagine my surprise when the asparagus came out with 5 stalks in a dish. The side dishes were only big enough for one person. It was incredibly frustrating that the waiter did not know and lied to us. If he did not know, he could have double checked with his manager. We obviously did not order more food since the portions are not sufficient and the meat takes 45 minutes to cook and rest. It was my partner's birthday, and when she said she wanted steak, I thought it was a good opportunity for us to celebrate at (and try for the first time) St. Anselm. We've seen it on so many "top steakhouses" or "top places for steak in NYC" lists, and while the atmosphere doesn't feel like many other steakhouses on the list (definitely more casual, inviting, down to earth), the food (especially the meats) were top notch! Food-wise: my partner and I were debating whether to go with the ax handle ribeye (which many of the other beautiful steak pictures are of) or go with trying a couple smaller meat dishes with more sides). Since our reservation was later in the evening, the only ax handle they had left was 71oz, which was way too much meat and incredibly pricy (at $4.20 an Oz at time of writing). So, we went with a starter of the Berkshire bacon (some of the best steakhouse bacon I've ever had), mains of the butchers steak (absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection) and the pork porterhouse (the bourbon butter add a nice effect, but wasn't too punchy), and sides of the pan fried mashed potatoes and spinach au gratin (like a creamed spinach). Everything was incredibly delicious, and the meats cooked to perfection. Oh and I can't forget the chocolate pot de creme that we got for dessert - so decadent and delectable! Drink-wise: I ended up trying all three beers on tap (with the German dark beer being my favorite) since they were smaller pours and ~$5-7 a piece, and my partner got a glass of Cabernet wine (which she thoroughly enjoyed). They have quite the wine and beer (bottles + cans) list, so if you enjoy those things, don't sleep on it! Service & Ambiance-wise: it was a great cozy spot (with a large back yard) for a nice meal with friends, a date, or celebration. Usually during the second visit, I get a little underwhelmed but something keeps making me want to go back for more. This time, it was the sticky toffee pudding. It was sweet and warm and paired so well with the ice cream. We got the iceberg salad with bacon this time and I was pleasantly surprised. How could a salad taste so good?! Because of the warm bacon dressing. We also ordered a weekly special - pork dish with an onion vinaigrette and peaches? I didn't love this although our waiter recommended it. The food here is so good! The hangar steak was nice and tender (except the end pieces), loved the garlic sauce. The pan fried mashed potatoes were out of this world. They are seasoned SO WELL. This is a place that has been my bookmark list since I moved to NYC almost a decade ago. After finally making it out here, I'm sad it took so me long to make it! I was hosting an out of town guest so made an early reservation here via Resy. We sat at the counter right in front of the grill, which in my opinion was the best seats in the house. The overall vibe is cozy, beautiful dark wood and exposed brick, super casual yet hip at the same time. The wine list was overwhelming - thank goodness for the helpful staff and we settled on a bottle (which turned out to be amazing). We got both the famed butcher steak as well as the strip steak. Both were delicious, but the butcher steak was definitely punching way above its weight class in terms of flavor and texture! At the price point on the butcher cut, I don't know if I'd ever want to go anywhere else if I want to indulge in beef. The restaurant itself is versatile and works for any occasion: catching up with friends, dining solo, a date, as a celebratory meal, or just a casual meal. We came with a large group and sat towards the door. The whole restaurant has a cool, hip steakhouse vibe. Alright as someone who has been to all of the top steakhouses in NYC here is my review of this restaurant plain blunt and simple. upon first getting in the service was exceptional simple and got to our table easily, who i believe was the owner came to inform us of deals and break down the menu, he didn't know the prices or ingredients of anything on his menu and was a bit frustrated with the fact that we did not want an appetizer, weird but moving on. we get our dinner the steak portions are small and the flavor is mediocre at best, the potato's and steak lack any flavor and at the very least i am sure that the potatoes are not seasoned at all, they are given a sauce which is supposed to provide the flavor but the lack of seasoning causes a mouth drying flavorless mess, nonetheless on the way out once we provided our tip the owner aggressively SNATCHED the payment device from my friend once we were finished paying and walked away without a goodbye or have a rest of your night, I have no idea what he was so upset about considering that he had stains all over his clothes was unshaven and completely unpresentable but i would give the food a 6/10 and the service a 2/10 go to strip house in midtown if you want ambiance candle lit dinner, great service and even better steak. simple as that, pass on this restaurant. read more

Short review: Come here for the ribeye or the lamb shoulder blade chop. They also apparently have a good butcher's steak if you're not there with multiple people but we didn't have it for that reasoning. I was here with one of my groups a few months back. One of the people who came with us lamented a little bit that they used to be a lot cheaper before they became well known but they were happy that the restaurant was doing well. The staff was friendly. Overall we liked the food a lot but definitely the main dishes (i.e. the steak/pork/lamb shoulder) are the absolute stars. The appetizers were either overpriced or on the bland end. Our first appetizer was the diver scallops with chimichurri and English peas. I don't remember the price (maybe around $18 or something and the current one is listed with marinated mushrooms for $20.) This consisted of three rather small scallops. I would have preferred them seared a bit better but they had some nice light sweetness. I liked the sauce as well as the peas as they both complimented it. Our other appetizer was the grilled halloumi with pea greens and long beans and that was $14. Pretty small piece of halloumi and just like the scallops, it needed a little bit more of a sear for texture. We also got the Berkshire bacon which was $13. That was the best of the three but paled in comparison to the ones at some of the more family steakhouses such as Keen's. As our main, we shared a few of the larger plates. The ax-handle rib eye or simply a tomahawk steak was priced at $3.95 per ounce. I believe our steak was maybe 50 oz or something similar. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare on the rarer end. My only complaint maybe is that I would prefer a little bit more salt but the quality was definitely there. We also got the shoulder blade chop with salsa verde for $31. This was an excellent lamb dish and if I was dining Here solo for whatever reason, I would probably give this or try the butcher's steak. Properly cooked as well with a good sear and the salsa complimented the richness well. Our last main meat was the bourbon brined pork porterhouse (or porkterhouse) and that was $28. The sauce had a pleasant smokiness and sweetness likely from the bourbon but the pork itself wasn't exactly that flavored well. I personally tend to dislike pork steaks as they have less flavor than some of the other meats and this was no exception but the sauce was nice. Our sides were the pan-fried mashed potatoes with truffle oil and lard as well as the broccoli with ranch and breadcrumbs and they were both $12. They were also both perfectly fine. The mashed potatoes would normally not even need the truffle oil as they would be rich enough (not to mention I generally don't like truffle oil) but it didn't really matter as they have a very light hint of it. I would have preferred more texture also. The broccoli was the more interesting of the two. The sauce was a bit overpowering but I didn't really mind and I think it went well. For dessert we got the sticky toffee pudding as well as the Basque cheesecake; a dessert that has become very trendy recently and I remember them both being on the cheap end especially for steakhouses desserts. The sticky toffee pudding was sweet as expected though the texture was more cakey compared to other versions. Still good. The Basque cheesecake was a much lighter variation compared to most other spots. Also fine. The main dishes were by far the best food here which makes this review a little bit difficult. If the appetizers were as good as the steak I would probably leave a 5 star review but if the meats were as good as the appetizers, I probably give them a 2 and wonder why most people love this place. The only downside was that we got our Rib Eye 45 mins after ordering .. took a really long time and arrived 30 min before the next table. We got lucky with a walk in, knowing there was nothing available for reservation (through resy), and got a table at their outdoor seating area, which was covered and warm enough. For appetizer we got the flat bread which was literally a long flat bread with grill marks to perfection and had a nice cheese dip, a bit salty but was still tasty and it went well with our dinner meats. The other 3 in our party ordered the butcher steak, I ordered the Lamb shoulder blade chop. We also got sides of spinach gratin, fennel, mashed potatoes and broccoli. The food itself was absolutely amazing, all our meats were cooked medium and cooked to perfection! My company loved their steaks, I tried it and man it was juicy and flavorful. My lamb was absolutely perfect, amazing seasoning and cooked to perfection as well. Idk if the wine was kicking in at the moment but the mashed potatoes were orgasmic! All the sides were great! I don't even like fennel and it tasted pretty damn good! Our wine selection was the Vestino campagnano red wine which our waiter suggested as a unique taste and it went well with our dishes. Here's a COVID safe review: I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner experience here. It was one of the best outdoor dining experiences I've ever had. We made a reservation here for my friend's birthday and they have these heated greenhouses. When I tell you that it was WARM! I didn't even have to wear a jacket. It was the perfect level of privacy and warmth and would be perfect for catching up with 4 friends or a date night. Now the food: DELICIOUS! I don't eat a lot of red meat or pork but I made an exception here and wow, loved it. I had their Shoulder Blade Lamb chop with a fresh salsa verde, pan fried mashed potatoes with truffle oil and grilled long beans! The star was the mashed potatoes (because who doesn't love carbs) because I've never had it the way they made it. And the food was perfectly seasoned. The lamb chop was cooked perfectly (how many times can i say perfect? Lmao) and I would eat it ten times over. And the long beans are long haha. But so good to split with a friend! My friend got the NY steak with the same potatoes. Lastly, I'm always doing dessert at places now and WOW. Their sticky toffee cake with icecream was A HIT! It was warm and soft and ooooo, i would bury myself in it. We also tried their cranberry sorbet and it wasn't too tart and it was good. Steak night, Date night was sooooo gooood! From beginning to end all things tonight were delicious. We were a little clueless with the wine selection for the meal but our server was quick to give us some suggestions and the southern italian red he suggested was a great pairing for the steaks. The iceberg salad with warm bacon dressing was sooo yum. An awesome contrast of crisp, cool, crunchy lettuce with the warm, bacon dreamy dressing - a nice departure from the traditional wedge salads that we typically enjoy. Flat bread cooked on a grill!! What?! I didn't know you could grill bread but you can and it ends up tasting really really good. Don't leave without trying this. And the steaks! We are typically ribeye folk but we had to try the Butcher's cut and the NY Strip Poivre that so many people rave about and we were not disappointed. An amazing sear/blackened crust on the hanger steak while maintaining a perfectly soft and flavorful medium rare. Our NY strip started out perfectly but towards the middle of the steak we started to hit more of a dryer medium cook - but we weren't mad. It was still really good. Ugh and the sides were also perfection. The spinach gratin and the grilled shishito peppers were the side stars for the night! End your meal with the rum toffee cake a la mode. Sadly I have to say that the food was not good. I was by myself sitting at the bar. I ordered the strip steak and it was tough and it did not have a good flavor no char at all. I had what I think they called grilled mashed potatoes which were tasteless no butter was offered. I had their version of creamed spinach which was good but not great. The desert a flourless chocolate cake with almonds was good but again not great. No one asked me how everything was until the end of the meal. When I told them the steak was tough. More like 4.5 stars. The food never ever disappoints. One of these days I will get around to ordering the Ax Handle. They had a beef tar tar special that was divine! It wasn't spread thin on a plate like it is in most places. It was ground with a delicious spicy pepper on top. So good! Also had the pan fried potatoes, spinach gratin and the grilled octopus. I wish I got the sardines, but there is always next time. I would definitely suggest making a reservation, the waitlist option on Resy was clutch so don't lose hope if you're available time and date isn't open. I'll be back. read more
