I came in hungry and did not feel like eat more afterwards. After not eating , there was not a warning signs for leftover just different signs saying something different . I have finally found a hot pot place that has great service and soup base customization. My husband and I dined here on Valentine's Day, thought it would be the least packed (We had our V Day dinner the night before). It was a 20-minute wait. With that said, there were only two servers, who also bussed the tables. Even with the busyness, our server (male, think his name was Paul), was so attentive and awesome. We ordered from the a la carte menu because factually, there's more selection, and subjectively, I feel that the quality is better. At any rate, I love how you can place your order electronically on their tablet. Each table has its own. You're able to view the menu items along with the pricing. My favorite part is how you can customize your soup base (choices: milky, tomato or hot soup). There are more options, but I don't remember them all. We went with the combo. For the spicy soup, you can choose level of spiciness, amount of peppers, and numbness intensity. How awesome is that? Our vegetables and proteins were beautifully presented. Seems like a standard hotpot place, not a franchise as far as I know. The staff all spoke Mandarin as well as English. The UX for ordering on the iPads felt a little cumbersome, but the pictures can be helpful if you're not familiar with the ingredients. The decor is fun if not a little extra--as if they're trying hard to be the sort of exotic that people might expect of an "Oriental" restaurant. Ehh. We tried half tomato and half spicy broth. It was the first time I've tried the tomato broth anywhere. It was fresh and a little tart--very yum!! Tomatoes naturally have MSG, which gives Italian food that tasty reputation. For hotpot I always like beef, lamb, fish, fish balls, fish tofu, frozen tofu, napa cabbage, and udon or fresh noodle. If it's on the menu, though, it probably means someone likes it. You can't go wrong! If you don't order enough, order more. If you ordered too much, cook it and take it home to put on rice for another meal. Ambiance to this place is 5/10. Place is older and chairs are wooden and uncomfortable. They have these iPads where you can order they are old and dirty. The prices are cheaper than most hotpot places 30.99 per person all you can eat but be aware they will up charge you for more than 8oz of leftovers. Note the sever will check your tables and stir soup to verify there is any leftovers (extremely) awkward and yes this happen to us. Also you have to eat your hotpot from a tiny bowl where you mix your sauce in. Meat portions were generous and all served frozen. Also everything was plastic they serve you water in a white plastic cup and plastic forks and spoons not packaged individually. For the amount of money that I paid, the environment was quite lackluster and underwhelming. In terms of authenticity, I'd say Squares really hits the nail on the head for a traditional feel. I got a sudden craving for soup after I got a cold. This place was about 30 mins from me but definitely worth the drive. I came in for lunch around 2pm and the restaurant was almost empty. Since it was empty I got guidance from my server on how things worked and how to get started. He explained the specials and took my drink order. He showed me the selection of ingredients for the hot pot on the iPad and I sent my order to the kitchen. While that was working, my server made a traditional sauce for dipping my cooked ingredients (his was way better than the basic soy and sriracha I made). There is a "bar" with a variety of sauces for you to choose from. Once I was done, my soup came out and all the ingredients right behind it. If this is your first time getting hot pot, order a couple things then add on if you have the room. I ordered a LOT of food and only ate about half. You can't take the raw ingredients home with you but the soup changes a little once you get it home so it's best if eaten immediately. Great selection of fresh ingredients and awesome service. Here's my run down of the place in comparison: SOUP BASE (3/5): I used to always get the milky base at little sheep (I can't handle spice). The milky base at LS was definitely more fragrant as they had a lot of medicinal herbs. The soup base here is not as flavorful, but it doesn't matter because ... INGREDIENTS (5/5) The ingredients are the star of the show!! They have things here like shrimp paste and wide noodles that they don't have at LS. The quality of their ingredients here is SO MUCH BETTER! Especially the beef! The fatty beef was probably my favorite part of the whole meal. I think my group ordered it five times! SAUCE (5/5): I live off of garlic, and this place delivers. They have a buffet style sauce bar that was well stocked with all the necessities. The garlic sauce that I added literally made my day SERVICE (5/5): Again, SO MUCH BETTER than LS! They use iPads here instead of the paper menus so you can actually see pictures of what you are ordering. They also don't have a limit on rounds (they do limit how long you are there though). Welcome to the most complicated menu in the history of restaurants, with an iPad that you have to try to figure out yourself. If it sucks, it's on you. "I haven't been here before so you'll have to guide us." "Here's the iPad now you put in what you want" "I haven't been here before so I have no way to know what we want" "Well you can go through this huge ipad menu of things you've never had before and decide what you want" "I don't want to use an iPad and we need you to guide us on how to compose a good hot pot" "Well just scroll through this list of 100 things you've never had before and pick out what you want and we'll bring them to you." I wanted to stand up and leave at this point, but we decided to fight through it. We ended up with the hot pot with two types of broth and a bunch of vegetables that seemed familiar enough that we might like them. Good luck with the sauce/spice buffet. FYI the "barbecue sauce" tastes like rotten fish. Your meat options are tough beef, tough lamb, or thin sliced bacon (the only one we ended up eating). You can choose better quality meats for +$10ish each. Yikes. Overall what we ended up with tasted OK, but the meats were tough and chewy. "Normal" spice level will burn most people's face off. Also, for $30 per person and the good meats are all an up charge on top of that, it's extremely expensive. You could eat at a fine steakhouse for the same money. Beers are served in styrofoam cups. Despite all of these different hot pot experiences opening all across DFW, Squares continues to stand alone at the top of the mountain. In our opinion, their broth is the most flavorful we've ever. The quality of ingredients isn't up to par with say HaiDiLao, but there definitely isn't anything to complain about. Their AYCE option is perfect for first-timers and has tons of selections to choose from. Above all else, Squares' sauce bar is what puts them ahead of all the others. I've only been to a handful of hot pot places so far but Squares is the best overall. They seem to have a more limited menu compared to other places but what they may lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. Love the cuts of their meats and the vast quantities they happily bring when requested. The beef, lamb and pork belly are my favorites. Also really enjoy all the noodles and the sauce bar. I like spicy food but I can't handle too much so I get the spicy broth here with the least amount of spice and numbing levels. The spice is prefect but I'm not a fan of the numbing. Service was excellent and quick and for those who like sauces, the sauce bar is free and comes with other little traditional chinese snacks to munch on while you wait for your broth to boil. I was not impressed with this hot pot. I went with a few friends. Only one person wanted to do unlimited while the rest wanted to do the "a la carte" option. They would not allow us to split. Everyone had to do the same option. I assume this is because they only provide one pot (split into sections) per table. I also did not like this feature. I saw the images on Yelp, so I knew that was their set up. I've never been to a hot pot that only provided one pot per table before. I much prefer the hot pot restaurants that provide each person their own pot/ broth. Especially during COVID, I'm not a fan of sharing my food with other people. The food was okay. They did not have near as many options for vegetables as other hot pots. The meat options are plentiful, but include a lot of odd options.
