I was excited to finally give this place a try after being to the Carollton location multiple times. I can say I was thoroughly disappointed. Luckily enough the food is good to keep them in business. We waited a few minutes to get seated and then another 15 minutes before our waitress decided to come by (while she gave water to a table that was seated after us) and ask us if we wanted water. The service was unbelievable in the worst way. We got the seafood pancakes, the original pork ribs, and the boiled ox combination hotpot. The food was great and filling. The beef short ribs are delicious! I had them as a suggestion from my wonderful waitress! The price and amount for the lunch menu was perfect. They give you refillable sides of pickled eggplant, kimchi, cucumbers, and bean sprouts. Also comes with white rice. I sat at a table in the corner and it was perfect for me. I'd return and order the hot stone soup when the weather is cooler. Drop an egg in while it's still boiling! Delish! I like that there is no TV to cause distractions. Maht Gaek has been a regular spot for me and the wife since moving to the area, and we're fortunate to live so close by! It's always been pretty consistent with their food and service. Our typical order usually consists of the seafood pancake, short rib, and cold noodles. For the two of us its a lot of food and we usually have a decent amount leftovers to take home. Their seafood pancake is very thick and flavorful with lots of real seafood and toppings. TL;DR - I love this place. Grilled pork ribs are amazing. Small dishes and barley tea are great. -- I've been eating at Maht Gaek a long time, mostly from delivery but also a fair number of take-out and dine-in. Despite all that, I realized today that I've never written a review so here goes my attempt at a totally unbiased review of a place where I'm definitely a regular. This location of Maht Gaek is the original one in Dallas and is in the Ranch 99 plaza in Plano. It's a big restaurant inside and has plenty of seating. It's great for big 6+ parties. In fact, there aren't many small tables and it can get kind of awkward when your party of 3 take up a table meant for 6. Luckily a few tables can be broken up into smaller ones. This place is almost always packed around meal times. They close every day at mid-day for couple hours to rest. I generally come here right when they open either for lunch (11 am) or dinner (5 pm) to avoid the crowds. Korean music plays in the background and the restaurant can get pretty loud during busy hours. Complimentary hot barley tea (with refills) is available upon request. This is great for cold days and tastes way better than water. Today I ordered a seafood soft tofu soup, soy sauce grilled pork rib, and a hot stone bowl bibimbap. One of the reasons I love Maht Gaek are the small dishes. They're very generous for take-out and give endless refills when dining-in. I particularly love the pickled cucumbers and kimchi because they're refreshing and the sour/spicy is a great way to balance the big meat dishes. I don't much care for the bean sprouts, eggplant, fish cake, and side salad but my wife likes them so it works out. The seafood soft tofu soup (soondubu) comes with a raw egg. I only get tofu soup when dining-in because it's a pain to deal with it at home. The soup comes out boiling hot (literally boiling) so crack that egg and drop it in. Then stir it ASAP to make sure it gets cooked because it'll cool the soup down really fast (unless you want uncooked egg in your soup). The soup comes with lots of soft tofu (probably half of it is tofu), and one of each of the following - shrimp with head and shell, oyster, clam meat, baby octopus, squid, and a dash of diced zucchini. It also comes with a one-person serving of white rice. Overall, it's pretty good. It makes for a pretty complete meal for one person with the rice and the refillable small dishes. The hot stone bowl bibimbap was alright. The rice is burnt and crusted against the side of stone bowl and gives it an extra layer of flavor. There are lots of veggies but not much protein (which is beef). The bibimbap on its own isn't very flavorful. For stronger flavor, add more bibimbap sauce and mix in the small dishes. This bibimbap is probably good for sharing between 2-3 people. The grilled pork rib comes in two flavors - soy sauce and original (spicy). We got the soy sauce flavor. It's basically a hot plate piled high with grilled pork ribs. It also comes with a one-person serving of white rice but the dish overall is probably enough for 2 people. The pork was chewy, juicy, flavorful, not too salty, and just a little burnt. All in all, pretty good. I generally use kimchi or cucumbers to balance out the oiliness of the ribs. The meat isn't fall off the bone or anything, but sometimes you just want to grab a rib with your hands and rip it apart, ya know? Anyways, this and the LA Galbi are probably my favorite dishes here. The service can be hit or miss depending on when you come here. The food usually comes out pretty quick. However, the waitstaff can become forgetful when it gets busy so don't be afraid to give them a reminder. Today they forgot my barley tea so I had to ask a second time when my food came out. There are no napkins at the table so be sure to ask for it. You can pay at your table when you're done. read more

Gathered with friends for dinner at Maht Gaek Sunday night in Plano, Texas. The place was quite busy with many patrons. It was decorated nicely with a standard Asian type theme. Our server was pleasant and friendly. The food was pretty good. I enjoyed all the dishes. The seafood pancake was filled a variety of shrimp or prawns, fish, and green onions. The pancake is made with potato starch. It is a batter filled with goodness and then fried. The pancake was a tad thick so kind of not fully cooked on the inside. We had the beef short ribs. Those were very tasty, tender, and flavorful. Next entree we ate was Bim bam bop. It has Korean beef, fried egg, carrots, purple cabbage, and cucumbers with rice on the bottom. The dish is cooked in a hot stone bowl so the rice will have a hard and crunchy bottom layer which provides a unique texture. All of our dishes were different and tasted delicious. The parking was easy access since the restaurant is located in a strip mall. The prices are reasonable and our experience was great! Had a craving for Korean food on a recent trip to Dallas so I checked Yelp and found Maht Gaek in Plano. It's located in the Ranch 99 supermarket shopping center. We arrived just before the noon lunch rich and got seated right away. They were busy throughout lunch and a constant line of customers waiting for a table. The service is fast and efficient and the food comes out fast. Only downfall is the tables are small and the four top we sat at could not hold all the dishes we ordered. My friend got the spicy oxtail soup and I got the spicy squid entree. At many restaurants, the spicy squid can be a bit too spicy. However, the spicy squid here is just right - it is more sweet & tangy with a hint of spiciness. The portion size was large - I had some leftovers to take home for a second meal. We also love the banchans they serve here - which you can ask to refill. They gave us kimchi, spicy daikons, fish cake (amazing!), bean sprouts, and I think the last one is eggplants? All their food also comes with a bowl of steamed rice which is soft and hot and korean side dishes (fish cakes, kimchi, seasoned eggplant, seasoned bean sprouts, and pickled cucumber). Army Stew comes with kimchi, thin pork belly, spam, sausage, and ramen. They bring a small stove to heat it on so you can eat it piping hot! It is very flavorful and a bit spicy, perfect for cold weather. The soup gives off a...nostalgic feeling? Very homey and comfortable lol. You can add cheese and another ramen pack for $2 each. The BBQ short ribs come from the kitchen and are really good! You can taste the grill char and they are so juicy. Soondooboo was also really good and came with 1 shrimp and 1 egg to come with! Came here for dinner last night and it was so good! The inside was cozy and the service was a little slow, but they kept refilling our banchan. We came here solely for the bossam ($40) to share. I liked it how this place gives you rice for it, but it threw me off how they didn't give you any sort of lettuce wraps- given the way this place was authentic and that the name itself literally means "pork wraps" (traditional way of eating it). Korean foods have become so prevalent in this area densely populated with different Asian ethnic groups that can easily rival any other Asian cuisine. We came here on a Saturday evening around 6:30. It was already full, and a few small parties were in front of us. After about 30 minutes, we were ushered in to a table. We picked out a few signature items just by looking at those mouthwatering pictures on the menu: grilled pork ribs, neck-bone soup, and grilled squid and pork. As usual, the order comes with all the complimentary small pickled and non-picked dishes, among which we loved the pickled cucumbers, egg plants, and fermented kimchi. The neck-bone soup was wonderful. The soup was so rich and flavorful with mild spiciness. The potatoes that come in it fully take in the flavors of the soup. I mixed the soup with the steamed rice. I'm not sure if this is Korean style. Anyway it was so good! If you have patience and strong teeth, you can also work on the formidable, chunky neck bones to pick the meat off the bones. The grilled squid and pork bulgogi was great. The squid sat on a beautiful bed of bean sprouts and sliced green unions. The fried squid was coated with the spicy, sweet, and garlicky sauce. It was so delicous. The pork bulgogi was as tasty as the squid! Who doesn't like the fatty, gummy pork belly! The pork ribs were the star of the show. We got the original style, which is the soy sauce, no spicy version, as well as the spicy version. The ribs were beautifully grilled and charred. They were smokey, juicy, and incredibly delicious! This review only scratches the surface of what this restaurant offers. They have so many other items, such as the ox tail soup and smoked fish, that we are not able to try in one single visit. Maht Gaek serves up some delicious Korean food. For dinner, the three of us ordered the flame grilled pork ribs (their signature dish), the stir-fried squid, and seollungtang (ox bone soup). The pork ribs were the clear winner of the three. The meat was nicely marinated, very tender, and perfectly charred. The portion size was very generous and we brought back some leftovers. The squid dish was good but was overly sweet for our taste. There were plenty of squid and vegetables in the dish though. Seollungtang had an excellent broth, which is the most important part of the dish, and very good overall but the portion was small. Having eaten it all my life, it was by far the smallest bowl I've seen for this dish. The bowl used here was the size normally used for soft tofu soup (soondubu) dishes. The side dishes (banchan) were all very tasty and plentiful in variety. The rice was overly wet on the day we went but it was likely an anomaly. Prices were very reasonable and the service was attentive and friendly. We were in area and i was craving cold korean noodles. if you've never had them, get it during a hot day. its a perfect way to cool down. When we got there during lunch, there were people waiting outside, so we knew it was going to be a good place. we had to put our names down and waited for about 15-20 mins to get seated. My favorite one was the spicy cucumbers and kimchi. you're allowed to ask for refills if you want. As for the pork ribs, they were the last to arrive, but it was really tender and juicy. they have two flavors, original (spicy) or soy sauce. We opted for the soy sauce one. They also give scissors to help you cut the meat off the bones. the pork ribs come on a sizzling hot plate over a bed of onions. The cold noodles also have a spicy option, but we opted for the plain one. they'll give you korean style mustard and vinegar for extra flavor. if you like vinegar, i'd highly suggest adding more into your dish. Can't believe it took me this long to try Maht Gaek until today. We went during lunch hours and I enjoyed every minute of it. Service- The Best, the 2 waitresses was quick, attentive, and made sure our experience was good while multitasking 10 other tables. Savory, smoky, slightly sweet, tender with some chew (what I prefer in ribs). Only thing I regret is not ordering another plate to take home. We also had the pork neck bone soup and it was great as well. Pork was tender with some chew, potatoes were perfect al dente, and broth was perfectly balanced. Banchan- my favorite was the kimchi and eggplant. Kimchi was balanced, not too salty, not too sour while having all the fermented flavors and crunch. Eggplant was firm yet soft and had that sweetness from the marinade. I could honestly just eat these two with just rice and I'll be happy. The rest of the banchan were great since they had a nice crisp, taste to cut the fattiness of the ribs and each one had its own flavor profile since most banchan at other places use the same marinade and end up tasting the same. OMG I love this place!! I had never noticed this restaurant before but it is SO GOOD!! They have a nice array of banchan - my favorites are the fish cake and cucumbers! We got 4 dishes here - pork ribs, seafood pancake, seafood tofu soup, and the grilled mackerel. Pork ribs are 10/10!!! My favorite dish to get here. The taste is so delicious and doesn't taste very spicy to me. It is a good amount of sweetness and savory. I LOVE this dish!! Would definitely recommend. Seafood pancake is also 10/10! It was perfectly crispy with lots of squid and shrimp - one of the best I have ever had! Seafood tofu soup was also pretty good as well - 8/10 with good amounts of seafood inside! Whenever I go to Maht Gaek, I always order their gamjatang, a spicy Korean soup with pork bones and potatoes. Spicy but not too spicy by Asian standards. Definitely recommend if you 1) like spicy food 2) like meat 3) like potatoes. *Side note: The more you boil the soup, the more starchy it gets due to the potatoes. I wanted to try something different at their new location, so I ordered their budae jeongol, which is basically another spicy Korean soup but with kimchi, ham, sausage, spam, ramen, green onions,... The soup was a bit lacking in comparison to some of the other versions I have had (especially the ones in Korea). However, I can't really think of any other places in Dallas that serve budae jjigae? This version kind of reminded me of a watered down kimchi jjigae. There are other versions of budae jjigae where people add canned beans or American cheese to the soup, which creates a deeper flavor profile. While I haven't ordered everything on their menu, I would have to say that their gamjatang and bibim naengmyeon are comparatively better options. Bibim naengmyeon is basically spicy cold noodles that are spicy and sweet from the red chili paste gochujang, and a little tangy from a splash of vinegar. Budae jeongol (3/5) Gamjatang (4/5) Bibim naengmyeon (4/5) Service (3/5) There is definitely some room for improvement with service at this location. The servers do not seem to be very attentive so it was not just once or twice where we had to wait a long time for takeout boxes or the check. Maht Gaek recently opened up a location in Carrollton so if you are more particular about service, I would check this location out. read more
