Hunan Bistro was a really solid find. We ordered the stir fry string beans, stir fry eggplant, spicy pork ears, and spicy fried fish and everything was super flavorful and delicious. The only thing I'd change is the fried fish, I wish it was a little less battered so you could taste more of the fish. It has a cozy mom and pop feel and the service was warm and friendly. Just a heads up that rice doesn't come with the dishes, so you have to order it separately. White rice is $1 per bowl. I also liked that the menu has photos for every item, which makes ordering a lot easier. They're also selling crawfish right now even though it's not on the menu. It's $12.99 per pound and if you buy 4 pounds you get 1 pound free. We didn't try it this time but good to know for next time. read more

Fairly authentic Chinese food - stir fried dishes, scallion pancake, were all flavorful and great. We didn't order any spicy dishes, but if you enjoy the spice this place should be a good choice. Loved how homey and welcoming this place felt right when we walked in. The service was amazing and super attentive the whole time. We ordered the string beans but accidentally got the version with eggplant. After seeing all the hype about the Hot Tango Fish Fillet at Hunan Bistro, we had to come and try it for ourselves! It didn't disappoint, when it came to the table, I was amazed at how huge it was and the flavor was intense with lots of garlic and soy, it truly was an outstanding dish! The fillets melt in your mouth, it also had plenty of veggies on the bottom! We also had the following: steamed Pork Belly with Bun (the bun was very soft but the pork belly was kinda fat), sautéed Beef Fillet with Black Pepper (there wasn't much beef but had lots of other diced veggies, too salty), Sautéed Green Bean (this was very good, had some wok hei), walnut Shrimp (the shrimps were overcooked and didn't have much flavor), and sizzling Seafood Egg Tofu (this came out steaming hot and the tofu was very soft and great flavor)! This place is more like a 3.5 out of 5 stars. i forgot all the different entrees we ordered, since my wife did all the ordering.... but i do remember one dish, and it's a must get at this place. Whatever you do, get the hot tango fish. its a lot of food for one dish, and most likely you will have left overs, unless you come with a lot of people. But the sauce they use in the hot tango fish, is like crack. If you pour it onto rice, it makes it a meal by itself. I think we also got one pork dish and once veggie dish as well. When I come to a family-owned Chinese restaurant, I know that taste is king if there are many repeat customers and no-frills dining service. I was not disappointed both times I have been here. The dishes are cooked fresh with very authentic flavors across the entire menu; one part of the menu that I love is that you can actually customize your vegetable stir fry based on what flavors and vegetables you would like on a given day. Restaurant is big inside with plenty of seating for big and small parties. They can get pretty busy around mealtimes. It was still busy with a waitlist around 1:30 PM on Saturday. They have private rooms upon request and availability. Minimum bill for a private room must exceed $200. They have a super thicc menu; it's 46 pages long. There's a full color pic for every dish which is pretty amazing! Chef's special menu is on the wall in the back of the restaurant. The QR code on the menu's front cover is for the restaurant's official WeChat account. We ordered 3 dishes - 酸辣鸡胗， 爆炒猪肝，老长沙臭豆腐. 酸辣鸡胗 - I came specifically to eat this. It's very spicy, especially the green chili. I couldn't handle it and had to take them out. Despite that, the spicy was sooo~ delicious! The pickled radish and green beans were perfect. 老长沙臭豆腐 - The tofu was just a little stinky but the flavor was a bit lacking. I don't know if this is normal/authentic since I'm not from there; maybe just not my cup of tea. The crunchy radish on top was a nice addition. 爆炒猪肝 - The liver in this dish is stored frozen so it has a stinky taste. Beware if you aren't used to this kind of flavor in the US. I guess the staff is used to this kind of complaint because they were very understanding and offered to replace it with another dish free of charge without us having to ask. We replaced it with the 农家小炒肉. They even let us cut in line of another table who came later so we wouldn't have to wait for them to cook the new dish from scratch and could eat it together with the rest of our meal. 农家小炒肉 - It was pretty good. The meat was very tender and the dish overall was flavorful. The only thing that I'd ask is for the chef to leave out half of the oil when plating. It'll look more appetizing. Rice is $1 per single-person bowl/portion. I highly recommend getting it if you're dining in and getting spicy dishes. The rice isn't anything special and you can definitely forgo it if you're getting takeout and don't mind cooking your own rice. The service was superb! As soon as you enter you are wowed by the elegant interior- you can immediately tell oh yes this is going to be a high quality and authentic Chinese restaurant. I came with my husband and our friends to celebrate my bestie's birthday. I am a huge fan of Hunan Bistro. My favorite dish is the fish, but we tried a few other items this last visit and I have new favorites! The eggplant mashed with peppers is unlike anything I've had before and such a delight. and the house special cauliflower was so good! We also had a tofu dish that I didn't photograph along with the fried fish served with pickled long beans. The tofu dish was a bit salty but I loved it with rice. The fried fish was overshadowed by our favorite fish, but it was still delicious and I enjoyed the pickled long beans. Hunan Bistro is one of the most authentic Chinese food places in DFW. I know this because my is from Hunan and I finally got to visit Hunan with her last year. The flavors oh Hunanese food (including what is served at Hunan Bistro) are incredible. Dishes like dry pot pork intestines are a consistent favorite. The white fish is a huge dish wish that is tasty and more accessible. Hot shower chicken is oddly named, richly flavored, and will make you sweat like midday in August. Service is good but not what you're there for. Ambiance is nice enough and everything is reasonably clean. I could write pages on the food here, which is some of our favorite in Dallas. If you like authentic Chinese food or want to try something really exotic, and intoxicatingly spicy, come to Hunan Bistro. read more

Second visit here! Had a hankering for the Hot Tango Fish Filet, so Mom and I returned here this past Friday(11/8) - right after they opened for lunch. Delicious and perfectly balanced with a hint of spice. Pair it with steamed white rice and some chrysanthemum tea and that's all you really need. A place for authentic Chinese food. If you cannot handle too much spice, try lotus root, eggplant, fish and lamb soup in the pic.. I rate these three dishes 5/5. If you eat light, ask for less salt: For dessert, brown sugar glutinous rice cake is also 5/5. The spicy beef soup is 2.5/5, will not order next time. The spicy and numb chicken with peanuts is 4/5, it tastes great but very spicy for me and a little too salty. The potato chips is 4/5, it will be much better if made with sweet potatoes. The service is 3/5 and needs improvement. We asked for hot water, they served hot water in plastic cups. When we asked for glass or non-plastic cups, they say they don't have them. But if you order tea, you get the small cups make of ceramics. We asked for these cups, they said they are too small and only gave us two ceramic cups with an unhappy face (they serviced us 4 cups of hot water in plastic cups earlier!) Waiting: not organized. We went on Friday at 6:30pm, very busy and waited for 30 mins. My husband and I went to Hunan Bistro quite a few times when we first moved to the area. We have enjoyed their food every visit, but we hadn't been in a while. We recently went again and were both like, "Why did we wait so long to come back?!" In the past, we had only ordered their spicy dishes. We both love spicy food and have a heavy taste, but some of the dishes were "almost" too spicy for us. That isn't really a complaint since we enjoy spicy food, but, if your spice tolerance is on the lower side, I'd keep that in mind when selecting dishes. On our most recent visit, we really enjoyed the hot tango fish filet and sautéed asparagus lettuce. We will definitely be ordering both of these again! The fish was covered in garlic and had a hint of spice. The ambiance is cozy and we love the decor. We've had great service every time we've been, even during some of the peak times. read more

This is probably my favorite Szechuan/Hunan restaurant. It's authentic, and the taste is on point. I'm so happy to stumble upon this place randomly, because not a lot of people know about it since it's hidden in a strip. The atmosphere was great for Saturday lunch with friends. We came in a party of 8, and ate family style with their round table. I wish their eating space was bigger, because we were struggling fitting everything next to the turntable. I couldn't fit my glass of water with my rice bowl, etc because the space was so limited. The prices were high, definitely higher than other authentic Chinese restaurants in the area ($15-25). We ordered a bunch of food, like the boiled fish, stir fried vegetables, egg tofu, fried rice, etc. My friends did the ordering since they speak Chinese, I just pointed at the photos. It took about 20-30 mins for the food to come out, which isn't bad on a Saturday. They just kept bringing dishes out as it finish, so we didn't get to take a photo of everything. Food was very well-seasoned, spicy and worth the price-to-portion ratio. I really enjoyed their spicy fish seasoning, and also the egg tofu!! I've been searching for this egg tofu dish in Dallas but haven't found any, so I was happy to see it on the menu. I would go again, but probably with friends. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming here - the place is large and is furnished with a pleasant, muted decor that makes for a comfortably elegant ambiance. The staff are pleasant and reasonably attentive. I asked for hot water and received it in a plastic cup, so I'd get cold water in the future to avoid potential chemicals from the plastic. But they also packed our boxes for us, which was unexpected and very kind. We ordered two items, which was way too much for two people but perfect for two people with leftovers for at least one more meal. The beef with daikon was my favorite - it had lots of whole garlic and the daikon just soaks up the rich, beefy flavor. The beef is braised beautifully and is very tender. Definitely going back for this. The pork belly was also very tasty - it is sweet and fatty, very apt to compliment the saltiness of the beef dish. It has broccoli that is minimally cooked, so as to preserve the texture but still taste cooked and not raw. My young friend treated me & my wife to dinner here. I was unsure because from outside it sure was unprepossessing. Inside was spare but clean. The menu was colossal, in the traditional style of Chinese bistros. Man they had a lot of tempting dishes, ranging from turtle(!) to clams to a huge vegetarian choice. It all seemed super-authentic. I admit I've only been to Guangdong in China so don't know if this was "real Hunanese" but it was definite not Americanized. Everything came in huge quantities, suitable for sharing. Oddly your personal plate was an undersized dish. Could have used something larger. Our waiter was friendly and helpful but had poor English skills, so patience is a virtue. The Food: crunchy vinegary shredded potato: unusual and interesting. Kind of one-note for the giant haystack of shreds we got. Cauliflower & green beans: my wife ordered this. It was good and the cauliflower was nicely sauteed and crispy. Cabbage: this was just about my favorite dish. So food and flavorful. Corn & Shrimp: a battered deep-fried dish. Each corn kernel was its own little nugget of flavor. The shrimp were hidden amongst the corn so were little fun surprises. Garlic shrimp & noodles: the shrimp were unpeeled, an authentic Chinese trait. The waiter did warn us of this, so he tried. But I'm used to it. What I wasn't ready for was the HUGE amount of chopped garlic that the shrimp was buries in. Seriously it must have been 20-30 cloves, no exaggeration. The whole epic thing was atop a bed of clear noodles that were absolutely delicious. The shrimo was good too, though I admit I spooned off much of the garlic first. Whole Turtle with green pepper: just kidding - I looked at it though. "Market Price" (never a good sign) and the waiter said it would be $89, so I passed. Maybe next time.
